Advice Please:
I have a G3 with PacMan ROM and it's freaking sweet. However, my infrared/camera (which I use hundreds of times/day for work) is not working when I shoot certain types of materials (works on leather, blurs on cloth now). I was planning on just waiting to get the G4 when more ROMs were out. However, now I'm rushed to pull the trigger. So here's my question:
I want to not activate my new G4, but use it for work over wi-fi and continue to use my G3 for everything else (calls/texts). Since I had to order my G4 to get more GB, the Verizon rep is telling me that I can have the G4 and keep my service on the G3. However, they will need to 1) Activate the G4/Deactivate G3, 2) Deactivate G4/Reactivate G3. Will I have any problems reactivating my G3 since it's rooted and ROMmed? Will this cause any problems with Verizon? Will they even notice?
Also, If I'm able to do this... Can I go ahead and root/Rom the inactivated G4 and activate it once a satisfactory ROM is out (and installed on it)?
I know this is complex and doesn't do many people much good, so MANY THANKS to whoever lends a hand!!!!!
I hate being in this predicament... If only we lived in a world where all the ROMs were available to all carriers within the first month of release... if only... LOL

Yes, you can activate the G4 and go back to the G3, even with root. When you activate the G4 make sure you go through the setup process before you pull the Sim and install the Sim back into the g3. Wifi will work on the G4 without the Sim at that point. Done it many times.

I'll second this... As I just did it lol. I bought my G4 back in October and used it for a week then went back to my G3 while waiting for some more development to happen. I'm back on the 4 now. Jumping back and forth works fine.

I juump from ZTE Moto E prepaid G3 and the G4. works fine with a good standing sim.
Thanks so much for the help!
To push it a step further... Could I Root/Rom the new G4, and then return it back to Verizon in my 2 week trial period without any alarms going off? Would I just need to un-root and flash stock Rom before returning?
The guys at the Verizon store are so oblivious to android development that I wouldn't be surprised if they took a rommed and rooted G4 back without realizing it!
Unfortunately I don't think we have any roms for our verizon g4 and most likely will never have more than stock based unless someone unlocks the boot loader or comes up with another bump and I think they've about given up trying which really sucks cuz I have 2 of then lol

Well I put it like this, I have 2 g4's and 2 days ago traded one for a g3 vs985 and I'm still in utter shock at how much this g3 blows those g4 outta the water in every single aspect and I've tested this thing balls out non stop and I hated lollipop and marshmallow until now that I'm running resurrection remix 6.0.1..rooting and custom recovery were a single click each and all I had to do was flash a 35b bootstack and modem to get mm running. I can't stress highly enough how much you'll regret getting rid of the g3 cuz there isn't very much to advance to with Verizon for a modder like us. The way they lock down their phones is just evil and the g3 is a rare miracle for a Verizon device. Have you done a lot of flashing yet on your g3?

That's what I was afraid of, thanks for confirming my suspicions! I have been using the PACMAN ROM for over a year now! Which ROMS do you recommend? Also note: I'm just good enough to root and flash. I've never messed with kernels or anything else.
I've run into a few quirks with my PACMAN ROM, nothing serious though (except for my camera not focusing as well anymore). Maybe a new ROM is just the change I need!
THANKS

Man on the g3 there's more Roms than I can begin to find a good start, hell I just started going down the list on Android File Host just search vs985 and there's over 400 files to start with. A good tip is to get a copy of each Android version's bootstack, modem, and kernal zips on XDA or you'll get updater script errors from the base band being off. Most likely you'll only have to stick with the latest version cuz most people go up in Android versions, not me I'm all over the place and still consider JB and kk the best and my personal favorite. But the Dirty Unicorns mm rom has really stepped up and cool as hell , especially the unique nav bar. If you run into problems finding the right bootstacks PM me and I'll hook you up

Samsung apparently has sent out a final notification to all those enrolled in the Nougat Beta that there will be no more updates and that the beta ends officially on December 30th and that they will attempt to push out the official update to everyone in January. Hope this means they were able to quash all major bugs.
http://www.androidcentral.com/galaxy-s7-and-s7-edge-receive-nougat-update-january
And it is officially Android 7.1.1, at least for those in the US.
Hopefully we get it soon, I would love some Nougat. At this point I prefer to not have to root my phone to get updates because it's a hassle without being able to unlock the bootloader. I was rooted for awhile and IMHO stock runs butter unless you spend hours customizing it. I love debloating but I would prefer a fully unlocked/rooted phone to a partial solution.
I don't have high hopes for when we get this updated because of verizon but we eventually will, about 2 years after everyone else

I haven't been rooted for over a year. I was on an LG G3 before my S7 and so far, I haven't found a real need to root. Before, I rooted because I used TiBu to backup my apps, but with the G3, they had their own backup utility that worked just like TiBu, but it's only for LG devices.
But with how Google Play uploads settings now, that appears to work just fine for me as well, so at this point, I have no reason to root. Plus, I really love Samsung Pay so I don't want to lose that.
This is the first device I have owned that I have never rooted. No need to. Faster than anything I have ever owned and mine never slows down for my usage. It's the first device that I feel works as intended. I also wasted a few years of my life with this stuff and just don't have the motivation anymore. Especially without an unlocked bootloader and custom recovery, I'd never.

Agree completely. The root process works well etc but I had to go through xposed and do a lot of tweaks to get it running well for really no gain over what I had stock.

I completely agree. The G3 was the first phone I ended up not rooting. I did at first because I was just in that mode of, get a new phone, root, flash a custom ROM. But as I started getting used to a lot of the features, and found that the battery life wasn't bad, coupled with running Greenify in non-root mode, I could make the battery last 1.5 days. So, over the last year of the two years I owned it, I didn't root.
With the S7, no need to root. This is smoothest phone I've had yet. The quality of the phone itself is excellent. So, this phone will not be rooted.
It appears the official Nougat OTA is being pushed out, with beta testers getting it first.
Anyone on here that has gotten the Nougat OTA notification yet? I'm holding off on accepting until I know better on how it performs, etc.

was there ever a second beta OTA sent out to Verizon testers? I didn't get into the beta but side loaded the only 7.0 beta build OTA that was floating around and my build number is NRD90M.G930VVRU4ZPK4. Was there an update to after that? Trying to figure out if the Nougate beta -> final OTA (assuming someone pulls it) will work on my phone or if I'll need to find the intermediary beta OTAs or else wipe clean and start from scratch.

I believe there were only two betas for VZW phones and then they cancelled the beta testing for VZW-based phones. Not sure why. Kind of sucks. Probably Big Red had something to do with it.

I swear searching around the interwebs for information on release dates has at least as much mis-information as looking for information on the election candidates during the election. So much trash.
But I haven't found anyone stating they heard definite dates. I'm thinking it will be late January at this point maybe early Feb before it hits our phones.
i have given up speculating anything that involves verizon. nothing would surprise me.
Take it where its coming from but it looks like some US non-beta testers are starting to see the update. "Unlocked" phones only but still....

I believe unlocked models should be getting it before us on Verizon. But, there was a story out that stated OTAs for some reason have stopped being pushed out and Samsung has acknowledged this and is looking into why it happened.
http://www.droidviews.com/samsung-galaxy-s7-android-nougat-problems-firmware-delivery-stops/
Whether the "bug" is in the firmware itself or with the update process that sends out the notifications is not mentioned.
The lollipop roms are great but it'll be fantastic if there is a marshmallow ROM for the E980.
Anybody knows if there's any?
Well, if you make it, there will be. There is a long discussion about marshmallow on this device, and all ended with "it needs too much work".

I got mine back today after family member brought it to repair center to get damn USB fixed... and guess what? repair center just made it worse They replaced only USB connector and messed up flat cables connecting that board to mainboard... So it's sitting on my desk now, charging slowly, waiting for me to order parts to finally repair it. It still looks great and feels great, but I miss fingerprint scanner now, lol.

That's kind of ass-holish from them, TBH... our providers give you code after your contract for that device is over (usually after 2 years) after you request it. But still, had similar thing happening with work phone (provider didn't want to unlock it after contract, and later required 80€ fee) but just brought it to your neighbourhood mobile shop(tm) and guy cracked that lock with a box in like 5 minutes, for 1/10th of price provider requested.
I'm repairing this one, that board is 4$, and need to find a good battery and voila, great secondary phone, not some crappy Lenovo.

Good to see you again haha. In regards to fixing your device, last year I unbricked my Asus TF300T by swapping in a new motherboard, and it had been bricked for 2-3 years by then. Luckily the almighty @timduru is still developing a 7.x ROM for it (and doing a great job at it too) so that device works great despite Nvidia ceasing development of GPU blobs for it ?.

Hey folks. Had the Pixel XL and was running Magisk, but wanted to get peoples impressions of root vs magisk on the Pixel 2.
Primary things I want it for: Adblocking, Viper audio, debloating, I can't even remember what the hell else I do.. (have been on a Samsung S9 temporarily after smashing my XL, didnt want to root for resale purposes)
Also, I know Pie just dropped, and the development here seems fairly active, so what is an estimated timeframe for 9.0 roms to drop? Not looking for ETA, so much as a general (1 month, 2 month, 3 years). On a similar note, is it possible to root/magisk the stock 9.0 rom? I see custom kernels, so methinks it is, but I want to be sure before I take the dive..
And finally, aside from warranty issues (which I don't qualify for anyways as my P2XL is second hand, and no invoice...stupid Australia), why WOULDNT I want to root?
Thanks

Use this unofficial version of Magisk (1674) as opposed to the official (1671). https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=77240449&postcount=2832
Why? Some users are experiencing boot issues with the official. This fixes it
Thanks for that. I am going to bite the bullet and do it today.

Did you just follow the steps one by one and it worked? I'll be doing this on Mac. Could install a VM with Windows if it makes it any easier.
I'm on windows, but you should be fine on Mac after installing ADB. Mac instruction for doing that are in the first post.
After that just follow directions to unlock and then install TWRP (my preference) .
Save everything important to your PC because it will get wiped.
As many of you know the Nokia 8.1 is probably not going to get a method for a unlocked bootloader since H.M.D global shut down the exploit/way to aquire it.
I was wondering if there would be any reason that my beloved 8.1 couldn't be rooted by apps like Kingroot when they get the ability to root android PIE.
I didn't realize upon buying the phone that Nokia was so against rooting and im kinda bummed out that as of yet the phone isn't rootable yet. Might even trade it for a Pocophone and take the lack of NFC for granted
Do have mine unlocked and rooted. But the root is a messy task which will most likely take away OTA updates because any tampering is an end to the incremental OTA. Then flashing stock is a tough task too, because the awesome people at FIH Mobile forgot to disable fuse when bl is unlocked. Also, the process is kinda complicated and still under testing Given the complication, I'm sure it won't be freely available because it starts off by using paid tools to trigger debug mode.
I really didn't know that there's almost no way to root this phone when I bought it 2 months ago, but luckily the only reason I've rooted my previous phone (Mi A1) was because of Gcam which is supported out of the box on this one. So it's fine for me, but I do see that no rooting method could be an issue for some people.

I have already replaced the phone because of lack of root / development for this phone. Hated the stock ROM because lots of things didnt work with it (samsung gear watch, some wireless APs, car navigation, etc etc) and without the development this would never be solved.
Also I have expected better camera for the price of the phone.
WIll never buy any HMD device ever again.

XDA is all about root and ROMs
Every one clever would find out first BEFORE buy Nokia phones about the impossibility of rooting those.
I'm sure when root is possible in future ( some geek will find a way, its a phone and not a high end secure government secret thing lol ) more pple will come see this thread.
Mark my words :good:
You're right. At the end of the update cycle I like to install LOS or likewise. Not for the sake for Adaway only.

Agree.
Just like what we're doing at home. We're using Samsung Note 3 (Cyanogenmod rom) as online phone for local line. Before that, the phone with default OS was too lagging and cannot even install the online phone app I need.

Motorola/Lenovo seems to be the last castle of root/development.
I was an early adopter of G7 (I bought it on initial release). As soon as BL unlock support added, BAM! rooted!
How easy it was and I am not developer

Do have mine unlocked and rooted. But the root is a messy task which will most likely take away OTA updates because any tampering is an end to the incremental OTA. Then flashing stock is a tough task too, because the awesome people at FIH Mobile forgot to disable fuse when bl is unlocked. Also, the process is kinda complicated and still under testing Given the complication, I'm sure it won't be freely available because it starts off by using paid tools to trigger debug mode.
