Hello XDA
I've been struggling hard to find a way to get my phone all the way back to stock as if it just got out of the box. I searched for a TON OF other threads and it's all mixed up in my head now, of course, I don't wanna do anything risky so I decided it'll be the best to ask it myself.
I'll provide some information to you so that if you have another ideas that I can work on, because then it'll be even easier to troubleshoot here
- Bootloader is "Unlocked"
- Modified
- S-on
-I'm not sure but I think the phone is International version of M8
-Root checker says I'm not rooted
-Some apps say I'm rooted ??????
-SuperSU gives errors, can't run it at all
-I don't have any backups or nandroids...
-I have a version of TWRP installed
-I guess I'm on stock rom? (Got the phone from a relative, worked on the root/rom shenanigans, screwed up and left it that way)

Okay thanks for the input, I'd like to double check with a question or two,
-Is this RUU file %100 compatible for my device?
-If I wanted to have a backup now, how do I do that? As a Nandroid or is there a way for me to have RUU backup of my own now?
1. Yes, that's the only compatible RUU for your getvar details.
2. You can get the nandroid backup 6.12.401.4 from my backup thread - https://forum.xda-developers.com/htc-one-m8/help/tutorial-how-to-stock-stock-twrp-t3086860
3. Instead of using RUU, you can restore 6.12.401.4 backup to get back to stock.
4. Your problem I believe is because you installed an outdated TWRP, make sure you install TWRP 3.0.2-0
5. You can make your own nandroid backup after back to stock and use correct TWRP version 3.0.2-0 to make backup

I just checked my TWRP version, it's 2.7.0.2 now
But I think it'll be much easier and "cleaner" to do RUU right? I wanted to have a backup now just in case things get screwed up all over again, any ideas/recommendations?
Yeah.. that's outdated TWRP version that you have, that's the reason of missing version-main.
Correct, use RUU will wipe clean everything in your phone including your internal storage. It will fix the missing version-main too.
Install TWRP 3.0.2-0 to make backup of your current ROM first and choose microsd for backup storage. Once you install RUU, your internal storage will be wiped clean.
My recommendation :
Copy out any important files from internal storage such as photos, musics & etc to PC.
Make a nandroid backup (personally I don't see a reason why you need that, backup is available in my thread if you need one)
Install RUU as per guide, you need to relock bootloader before proceed.

I wanted to have a backup because of the fact that if something funky happens like brick, I want to be able fix it
But wait, what if something weird happened and my phone got corrupted, am I gonna be able to use the backups on your thread? Then I practically won't need a backup of my own now?
On your 1st post you said you want a clean out of the box stock. You can achieve this either using the RUU or my clean non-rooted backup in my thread.
Using your own backup is not a problem but you won't achieve what you originally intended to do when you open this thread.
For S-On device like yours is not easy to get bricked, but in any situation there is no 100% guarantee. It' all depends on the hardware.

I am currently on viper one 2.5.0 and need to go back to stock before I can get Viper one 4.0.
I have tied myself in knots in my attempts at following tutorials and advice on this forum. I think I need someone to hold my hand and take me through it slowly.
Here's where I am so far...
I have downloaded the stock backup file corresponding to my CID and O.S (orang_001 and 1.54.61.5)
I have tried to flash this file by installing through Cwm recovery from sd card but get "installation aborted"
I have tried flashing via adb fastboot which fails on signature check.
I have s-on and cannot get s-off via sunshine because of an error about having a debuggable ram disk.
Please, can someone please tell me what my first step should be
You can't flash/install a backup zip. You need to extract it on PC and transfer the extracted folder/files to recovery backup folder. Then use the recovery to restore (not install)
Your first step, post result of fastboot getvar all (minus serial no. & imei no.) to determine you have the backup to restore

You sure do need 1.54.61.5 backup and 1.54.61.5 recovery.img
You can get them from : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2701376
I'm not familiar with Philz/CWM recovery but the basic are :
1. Extract the downloaded backup zip on your PC.
2. Install Philz/CWM recovery if the backup made with it.
3. Transfer the extracted folder with its contents to sdcard\Clockworkmod\Backups\ or ext_sd\Clockworkmod\Backups\ ... up to you
4. In Philz/CWM recovery, go to backup & restore
5. Select restore from sdcard or sdcard1 (depends on where you put the backup folder)
6. Do the restore
7. Select reboot to bootloader
8. Install/fastboot flash 1.54.61.5 stock recovery (If the backup already have the stock recovery restored you can skip this but no harm doing it to ensure the stock recovery is installed)
9. Reboot - do software update check and proceed with OTA - you need to do this multiple time to update up to the latest lollipop 4.19.61.2
Good luck and good night ... bed time

As I mentioned I don't know much about Philz/CWM and how they work. I read a few times about the same problem.
Which version that you use ? Try philz_touch_6.26.6-m8.img

Yeah, It looked like I was using the wrong version of CWM. I then tried with Philz_touch and could initiate the restore which would get very close to completion then fail when writing the system at 1444/2110. I then downloaded the second backup file from hofs thread and that has worked like a charm.
So the file which worked for me has a backup date 2014-04-12.08.16.28 and the one that did not work was 2014-07-03.16.03.36.
Anyway, I'm very grateful for your advice.
Thanks friend, Have a good day

There is no problem to install RUU on S-On device. Just need to relock bootloader if it is unlocked.
You may have remove/freeze Setup Wizard or it's corrupted.
Restore your nandroid backup if you have any. If no, try restore a stock nandroid backup or RUU.
Without fastboot getvar all information, nothing much to help you
Post here fastboot getvar all result (minus serial & imei no.), someone may be able to help you

Firstly - remove that serial no & imei no from your post
You have 3 options :
1. Restore 4.16.401.10 TWRP backup and 4.16.401.10 stock recovery then do OTA update to 4.16.401.13
or
2. Relock your bootloader and install 4.16.401.10 RUU.exe - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=56140330&postcount=1
(make backup of your internal storage important data as this will wipe everything)
or
3. Relock your bootloader and fastboot flash the 4.16.401.10 RUU.zip - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2735235
(make backup of your internal storage important data as this will wipe everything and also note you need htc_fastboot instead of normal fastboot)
You can get the RUU.zip from link in option 2.
Option 2 & 3 - you will have the hassle to relock bootloader and later re-unlock bootloader if you want to root it again and this process will wipe your data.
I would go for option 1, no need to relock bootloader - you can get all the needed files in link in my signature

I think you can skip option 2 & 3 as it seems most links to required files are no more.
Go for option 1, no need S-Off, no need to relock bootloader.
What you need is an unlocked bootloader and TWRP recovery installed, use TWRP 2.8.6.0 or 2.8.7.0

No, not zip file ... extract zip on PC and copy the last folder 4.16.401.10 not 4.16.401.10_ckpv5 folder to TWRP/Backup/Serialno./ then restore on TWRP
That's explained on step 7,8 & 9

Hey everyone
The thing is that I was trying to return my phone to stock recovery to update my phone to Marshmallow and unroot it and I read this in another forum:"Boot your phone to TWRP recovery mode by turn off your phone then presses Vol up + Power to boot into bootloader then choose RECOVERY. There is a more simple way, by using “adb reboot recovery”.
Once came into TWRP main menu, now tap Mount -> Mount system then taps Home.
Tap Advanced -> File Manager, browse to “/system/xbin” folder. From there delete su, daemonsu or busybox if it exists. Also browse to “/system/app” the get rid of Superuser.apk."
So I followed these instructions and then when I rebooted the phone,it got stuck in bootloop. I can't turn it off now or get into the bootloader.
Android-HTC One M8
What can I do to have my phone again in stock recovery?
Thanks in advance
First of all if you rooted the rom this ain't going to work. You need a never rooted stock rom + recovery.
Hold power + volume up and switch to volume down when the screen turns black (do not let go of the power button) then you are in the BL. From there you go to the custom TWRP recovery.
Then you have to find a pure stock backup or a RUU that matches your OS/firmware number (if you haven't made one yourself), restore it and flash the stock recovery and you are done.

You can't run the dev edition RUU at all as you are S-ON and have a different firmware. If you have the 709 RUU then try that indeed. But backup what you need because a RUU deletes EVERYTHING !

No S-OFF is NOT needed. just get the RUU with that version number indeed if it's even available. Then run it with a RELOCKED bootloader.

for the adb sideload says cannot read *sideload* . Any other way to push a .zip file into the phones sd card to mount it with twrp?

Thank you so much for answering I did it
I'm sure a a post like this have came up a million times but I can't find any. Recently I have just fully unrooted my phone and set it back to stock recovery and everything. So as I was setting up the basically factory phone I went to install the software update for o2. And so I download the file and I think everything is good. But when I go to install it, it just restarts the phone in the fastboot mode and update s not applied, and from here I'm not sure how to get the update working. I would appriciate any help given
Thank you for your time to help.
If you need the CID and other information I will get it posted
Fully unrooted most of the time won't work for OTA.
You need a never rooted stock ROM to update.
I may have the backup that you need in my thread linked in my sig.

I used one of your backups when I was unrooting the phone, but it still doesn't seem to work? I matched the CID for the recovery and I think I got a rom from a different stock post

How can you unrooting when using my backup ? It comes stock non-rooted.
The recovery, you don't match with CID but match it with the stock backup that you restored.
Example - 3.32.206.9 stock backup, install 3.32.206.9 stock recovery
Wrong recovery, OTA will fails.
Post your fastboot getvar all result (delete serial & imei no. before posting), we'll see which one that you actually need.

With this info, you need to restore 2.22.206.6 stock backup and install 2.22.206.6 stock recovery to successfully OTA.
Then you need to do multiple OTAs : 2.22.206.6 -> 3.32.206.9 -> 4.20.206.1 -> 4.20.206.2 -> 6.13.206.5
Doing this kind of OTA, no need to relock bootloader
If you want a shortcut - install 4.20.206.2 RUU.zip
Download - https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=24369303960686241
After install 4.20.206.2 RUU, you need to do only one OTA to 6.13.206.5
You can follow this guide but use the above RUU not the one in the guide - https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=64926626&postcount=6
Doing this RUU then OTA, you need to relock bootloader first and this will wipe everything in your internal storage. Make backup before you proceed.

What you mean that you messed up.
It's not easy to brick a S-On device ... did you follow instructions accordingly.
Explain what you did to see where it is wrong.
Hope someone can help. My daughter switched on her HTC One M8 after months of not using and it is showing a page with software status modified, locked and s-on. I know nothing about HTC phones. I have spent 2 days trying to get the answer, but it is beyond me. Here is information I have.

Spontaneously not being able to boot to OS, and "Software Modified" error on a bootloader locked, previously unmodified (far as you know) phone; often means the OS has become damaged/corrupted.
I don't think your version (O2) has an official HTC RUU tool, which would make it pretty easy to get running again. The device can possibly still be recovered, but the process is not trivial. You would need to unlock the bootloader (HTCdev.com process), flash custom recovery TWRP, then install stock TWRP backup 6.13.206.5 from here (with further instructions herein): https://forum.xda-developers.com/htc-one-m8/help/tutorial-how-to-stock-stock-twrp-t3086860
All personal data on the phone will be lost in the process (data on removable SD will remain, if there is one installed). But if your daughter has not used the phone in months, maybe the personal data on it is not important?

Thank you for your reply, I'll give this a go, and take my time. There is not personal data on the phone that is important, so not a tragedy if I fail. Appreciate your help.

TWRP backup 6.13.206.5 is in Post #3 of the same thread (scroll down, third post of that thread), it says that right in the instructions for Step #2.
You don't need stock recovery (step #3). This is only to receive updates, which doesn't apply to this device anymore (updates stopped at Marshmallow) and not useful for what you are trying to so (just restore stock ROM/TWRP backup). So you can skip step #2, as well as stop at Step #9, and just reboot (and hopefully stock ROM will boot). No need to do steps 10 and on. In fact, it is detrimental in doing so, since if you need to use TWRP again, it will be gone if you flash stock recovery.

Followed all these instructions and it said that the restore was successful. However when I reboot the phone is stuck on the white startup screen. Any further advice?

Some things to try:
- Did you do the wipes as directed in the guide (Dalvik, cache, data, system) before the restore?
- What version of TWRP did you install? If you followed the guide correctly, it should be 2.8.7 (and older versions may not be compatible with your firmware) which is tried and true. But you can also try other versions after 2.8.7 (up to current 3.2.3-1) from here: https://dl.twrp.me/m8/
- Make sure it was the backup version 6.13.206.5 that you restored. Download and restore the backup again, to be sure the files wasn't corrupted. Make sure you restore both system and boot.img partitions.
- After restore, do the default wipe in TWRP (slightly different from what you wiped before: Dalvik, cache, data, but not system), just to be sure.

You're quite welcome. Glad it worked out for you.
Not sure why it didn't work the first or second time. Maybe you missed a step, or did something slightly incorrect. Of just some glitch, that was not any fault of yours (it happens). Persistence is key, sometimes!
