I've downloaded the 4.0.3 OTA update from here and put it on my /storage/emulated/0 folder, as you can see.
I wonder if it's possible to update from 4.0.2 to this 4.0.3 with this "Local upgrade" feature, instead of rebooting Safe Mode, flash the zip, reinstall SuperSu, etc.

If you are totally stock (without root or any other mods), you can attempt that. But since you seem to be rooted, may be with TWRP etc, the update this way will not work.

Then download the full zip (about 1.47 GB) and flash it through TWRP. If you are in doubt, there are many guides here, so search for them.

I just flashed stock recovery and flashed the update and reinstall TWRP and SU. Didn't loose any data. :good:

If you are s-on, you can't flash anything custom or stock. You will need to root and s-off first. Or you could take the ota if all you want is the update. If you want to get some customization on there...you should do some reading through the threads. Things are a bit different since a few years ago and this phone doesn't have an external sd card...

First link is 100% stock and will work on stock recovery. Just place it on the phone storage or SD and boot to stock recovery. Choose the appropriate "apply update from" and then point to that file.

every time i try to get into the recovery menu i just get a picture of the phone with a red triangle and exclamation point.
Any idea if towelroot works with this update? I noticed that the update notes on the vzw website says "Device root vulnerability issue has been resolved"

That is your stock recovery. Stock recovery is not meant to go into like custom ones. It's used for ota's, factory resets, and that's about it.

When flashing an OTA everything has to be bone stock. If you have stock tethering enabled, Xposed Framework installed, or files missing from /system/apps, it will fail.
That's a bummer. I'm totally stock. Just changed fonts, that's it. Guess it just won't go. thanks
I restored stock recovery and stock hotspot and the OTA still won't install properly -- I'm not sure what I'm missing. Is there any way to flash the OTA when rooted without wiping my phone?

Flash in trwp the full odex ROM. I don't know if updating via ota while rooted will work. I know unlock and s-off doesn't matter from personal experience.

In the past, simply restoring stock recovery, updating normally, and then flashing a custom recovery was enough. Doesn't seem to work this time, or there's simply some customization I've forgotten about.
If I'm not mistaken, just the presence of the su binary can be enough to abort an official ota. If you have the official OTA zip and attempt flashing through the stock recovery and it fails, the error message should give some indication of the problem. The script runs a check on the contents of /system and if anything is off it will fail.

Su is fine. It simply won't work afterwords. Any other system changes will cause it to fail though.

So I have TWRP, root, s-off, and XPosed installed. Verizon sent me the OTA update, but I need to return everything to stock before I do anything with the update? I'm a little dense here...

Disable xposed. Flash stock recovery and take the ota. Then flash custom recovery via Fastboot and flash su.zip in Twrp.
Assuming of course you made no other /system mods other than root and xposed.

Do the same thing as before? TWRP should work now, so Magisk or supersu should be good to go.

Yes, but you'll have to flash the stock recovery and boot images from your current update (2.38.617.6) prior to taking next OTA or it simply won't update. If anything you or apps do using root to mount system as RW (or modify it), you'll have to flash stock system image prior to taking OTA as well. Best way is to restore stock system image and boot from TWRP backup then find stock recovery on forums or extract from current RUU and flash stock recovery then take OTA.
Hi, i have an acer t07 device. When I try to update my phone through ota, which is 400mb, during the installation it fails. And then i have to download again the update. Is there a way to backup or save the downloaded files so it wont download again? Without root if possible. And also, custom recovery does not still work for my last-year-released device. Thanks

If your device rooted or custom recovery installed then can't flash OTA update because of modifications in system partition. OTA check system if found any modification then OTA update abort.

I wonder is it possible to flash stock unrooted OOS over rooted OOS in order to install small OTAs. After updates plan to root again. Does anyone know whether this is possible or not? And, any side effects could occur?
I search over internet and couldn't find any useful info about this.

Technically you'll be updating your device by flashing the newest stock anyway. No need for OTAs. You can then re-root.

Not what i meant. Let's say I'm on rooted OB18. But i want to update it to OB19. all i have is OB18 stock firmware. So, can i flash OB18 over rooted OB18 and then update it to OB19 (ota). Then re-root.
The reason I'm asking this is i have a very limited data internet connection. So i can save GBs if this is doable.

Plan to keep a copy of OB18 around? If so, then yea absolutely it should work. Root will either modify your system or your kernel depending on the method, which both get overwritten if you flash stock.
Issue you'll probably end up having in the future though is that if you always use OB18, when it comes time to install OB20, you'll be downgrading without a wipe, which I don't think is a great idea.

No you can't.
Because OTA will fail for "partition mismatching": the systemless root alters only but anyhow the /boot partition.
You must update with FOTA (Full OTAs), doesn't matter you're using stock or TWRP recovery.
The OxygenOS built-in updater should detects your system as modified and download only FOTAs.

Let's say he has open beta 18, rooted and twrp installed, if he flashes ob18 again over it, this will get rid both of the root and twrp, resulting in an untouched system, therefore, ota after this will be possible. He can then flash back twrp and root the device

But practically speaking, it's crazy to unroot system only for OTA.
It would be more reliable to download FOTAs on rooted system.
Then, if @GTRanushka is running Magisk (MagiskSU) as root method, it could be working even after firmware update.
Because of its systemless nature.

In order to flash OTAS has to have stock rom but also recovery stock and bootloader blocked but not installed the OTAS otherwise it tells you that you have something modified and you have to download the complete rom. (That does not suit you)

You don't need a locked bootloader for OTA just have to flash stock full ROM zip and stock recovery then you're good to go

Why i try to unroot and do OTAs is the much less download size compared to FOTAs.

I tried it with the bootloader open and I did not think that something is not right that it has to download complete the rom.:
So op 5t released a new update, whenever i open the update screen it says root detected, i would lose my root privileges if I update the phone.
I wanted to know whether i would only lose my root, or entire thing of bootloader getting locked etc?
After updating will I be able to just boot into recovery and flash root file? Or whole process I would have to do again

Updates reinstall the stock recovery. You have to flash twrp then root.

When you install an OTA it will NOT relock your bootloader, it will reinstall the stock recovery since that is included in the OTA zip and is forced installed to be sure the update installs correctly.
You will lose the root temporarily until you flash a custom recovery again and your root of choice.

When an OTA is available, please go to Magisk Manager → Uninstall → Restore Images. Do not reboot immediately or you will have Magisk uninstalled. This will restore your boot (or dtbo if available) back to 100% untouched stock images in order to pass verifications. This step is required before doing any of the following steps written below!

yee, but after you have used the OTA you will need to flash twrp again since the OTA flashes the stock recovery, or modify your boot image but that is a pain in the ass. :silly:
