Is it possible to complete the whole process on a mac? I don't have a PC.
i found this.
http://www.droidfilez.com/Evo4GRoot.html
dont know what it is/how it works though.
proceed at your own risk.
yes, all you need to root is adb!
download the adb sdk for mac and use the terminal app in utilities to execute adb commands
after you set up the sdk execute the commands, like the examples :
./adb devices
./adb shell
./adb push
just follow the guides to root and wheerever it says to use adb use ./adb instead because your on a mac.
hope you got the jist of what im saying
i wouldnt use the above post "automated rooter" just yet... you're new to this, you should research mroe about the automated rooter and if it does what it says it does. wait till it comes up on xda?
EDIT : follow the guide that waterboy100 posted below if you want to do it without adb. i would encourage you to learn adb though as its simple and will help you learn more about rooting in the long run.
this guy should have a post up soon too

I am downloading the sdk now and I am interested in this. I have the 1st root completed and I am trying to get the second section done and I am having a hell of a time :/
you can totally do every rooting ability in Mac. I got a hackintosh and downloaded the ADB kit and just plug in the phone and ADB recognized in an instance. No need to install driver like Windows.
I just did the rull NAND unlocking with root on my Mac.
Awesome I downloaded the files and I'll try doing it today. I wanted to remove some Sprint Apps and maybe flash a ROM later one when the builds become more solid and bugs get worked out.
By the way I'm playing Pocket Empires to kill time and it's pretty cool. If I root will I have to start the game all over again?
i've done everything on my mac...works great!
I'm lost as hell. I found this thread:
http://www.androidpolice.com/2010/0...-write-permissions-to-system-incredible-next/
I did the unrevoked thing and I see this icon called SuperUser Permissions in my app list.
Am I able to proceed and fully root or do I have to re-do the root with the Toast method? This looks too complicated and by the way I tried the ./adb thing on my mac and I get errors saying "No such file or directory".
im trying to push the pcimg to sdcard and its saying access denied
Why do you guys say "Oh, I did it on my mac" without saying HOW you did it on your mac? Regular instructions dont work so you obviously did something special to make it work... I keep getting permission denied BS
Here you go dude. Step by step instructions along with the download links. I followed this to the T and it worked out find for me:

Like a Boss Hboot 2.02 root but got the $ instead of # sign after i went into the shell and its telling me "You Should see a "#". This means you have root if you see a "$" or some other error message. Reboot your phone, check your drivers, usb debugging and cable and start over. If you got a "#" You can Proceed. You should still be in the shell at a "#" If not start over.." and at the beginning it tells me to "Make sure you have the drivers installed for your phone (recommend: SDK Drivers, unrevoked hboot drivers" but im not sure exactly what that means or how to do it, i thought i was doing alright but i dont think i have it all quite figured out, anyone know the next step i should take to keep from bricking this thing?
Nothin? I ran Unrevoked3 and put everything into the C:/android-sdk-windows folder so hopefully it put the right drivers in there, if im doing this entirely wrong someone say something please!
try typing SU then enter after the $ prompt, if that gives you the # prompt proceed, also be sure to run unrevoked forever to permantly unlock nand and get s-off, ok so i just also read a little more carefully, this method listed in your OP is not unrevoked3, maybe a little more info on exactly what you did would help.

Permission denied on the SU im afraid to run the wrong unrevoked because of the damn HBoot 2.02 think itll be straight if i do it regardless?
its gotta be the drivers, what am i missing here? this is driving me nuts, i spent 3 hours earlier 2 of which were to turn it back into a phone, it was a brick...

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=829045 Im using this guide and ive made it up to step 6, if i go to the device manager i have Android USB Devices and when its plugged in it says My HTC and down lower i have portable devices and its just named G:/ but when i tried to update the drivers it says theyre all up to date, any idea if i need to uninstall the ones i have and use a different set of drivers? like installing HTC Sync then uninstalling it? just not sure whats going on..
Not to sure on this one, what did it do when you typed SU? Also what version of hboot do you have, are you sure it is 2.02? if not just keep trying sometimes the exploit doesnt work the first time.
Yeah def. got 2.02 when i typed SU it said Permission Denied I believe its a problem with not having all the drivers on the computer itself, should i install HTC Sync then uninstall it to get its drivers at least?
you can try that for sure, you did use adb to push all of those files in the zip to your sd card right? or did you just drag and drop them?
Used the adb push method to the absolute T but didnt figure out the right drivers at the beginning so im starting over there, what does it mean by the Unrevoked HBoot drivers, i did the unrevoked3 install and that worked out fine but dont think thats what it meant.
So now the phones labeled differently in the device manager, im supposed to delete the actual HTC Sync program before i begin but leave the driver installer and everything right? and i have all the unrevoked folders and SDK ones together in the file i pushed from like it told me to so im going to try to update all those and make sure the drivers are all correct then start the command prompt over again, its in charge only and debug mode of course.
Any idea if the DIAG drivers have anything to do with it? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=766374 as said in here where you have to actually pick them through the phone?
uhh i may of been retarded by not clicking the SDK Setup.exe file and running it.. wow... snuck that one right by me >_<
Hi .. would really like some help as I got a replacement G2 and I need to return my broken phone back tmrw and would like to root it.
I actually rooted my first g2 using temp root/visionary about a year ago...
but now I can't seem to understand the wiki's or any guides on how to root my phone again. . help!
Tried the AMT way, says device is not connected
Currently trying to use this guide : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1107911
I can't even get past the first step.. in the command prompt I get
"*daemon started successfully*
error: device not found
any help would be appreciated.. sorry I am a complete noob at this

Do you have the HTC Drivers installed? Do you have Android debugging enabled on your phone? I don't know if it matters but I think your sdcard shouldn't be mounted when you connect it to your PC.
With the above things done, you should be able to type
adb devices
And it should list your device and its serial number.
You probably need to install drivers. I'm assuming you're using windows?
You can get the driver package here
You'll need to downgrade first with this guide
Then I recommend the wiki method to root
-Nipqer
I just downloaded the HTC drivers
i'm following the downgrade guide now
i downloaded the 2 files and put them in the platform-tools folder
already having trouble with the first step
"Run the following command to verify the exploit has access to what it needs. (Only the first line is the command. The second line should be the result returned if all goes well.)
Code:
> adb shell cat /dev/msm_rotator"
where do i type this command?
"> adb shell cat /dev/msm_rotator"
sorry if i sound like an complete idiot.. i have no clue what to do.
alright, i read through some of the adb for dummies
when i type in adb devices i do not see a serial number.. but i've installed the htc drivers already
is there something else i need to install? thanks
edit:* Yay i just got the drivers working, serial number is now showing!
edit 2: i had no idea what i was doing... somehow got through the instructions, downloaded some pda drivers, followed the guides and now my phone is rooted!
i felt like Neo typing in the codes... Thank you guys. Thank you XDA!!
Glad to hear you got it sorted out. Sounds like a good learning experience
I am trying to sync my DInc with Windows 8 Pro to unlock it through the HTC developer site. Unrevoked wont work due to the version of my baseband being 2.15.10.12.20. Software version 2.3.4.
I have USB debugging enabled, fastboot off, performed a factory reset, cleared cache through HBOOT, and the computer DOES reckognize the phone and I am able to select open files and do whatever I need to do with the phone... it just wont display on HTCSync so I can go through the process of rooting it and getting JB on it.
I have also tried running HTCSync in compatability mode. I have been working on getting this working for days now, and have searched this and many other forums for solutions to no avail.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated, and any more information you need will be provided asap.
Check the unrevoked site for the proper drivers of you haven't already. You don't need HTCSync to work, just adb.

The baseband for this particullar device isn't supported by unrevoked, so I'm looking for other solutions. Ate there any other ways you know of to get jb on this phone?

I understand that unrevoked won't work, but you need your PC to connect to it as far as drivers go (most people use unrevoked drivers). You don't need HTCSync, just adb. If you can setup adb to work, and get it read when you issue
Code:
adb devices
then you should be good to.

I can connect the phone and browse files through Windows explorer, I guess I'm just not familiar with adb yet, ill try to find more information on that and give it a try, thanks!
Still Lost

I've been looking for the adb tool you had mentioned, but the only reference I am finding is for ICS/JB. I'm currently running Gingerbread (2.3.4 to be exact) Your last comment mentioned using a command 'adb devices' which makes me think adb is actually a command in windows or a linux application... I'm sure something I've said already has made you laugh at me so I'll stop now and just ask... can you give me a link to the process I need to follow to get this resolved, because for whatever reason, I can't find what I think you were trying to direct me towards.
Thanks!

How To Set Up Android ADB & Fastboot On Windows [Tutorial]
The only note on this guide I'd make, is not to use the C:\ drive. It's always a bad idea to put stuff in your root directory. Myself, I installed the sdk (which installed itself to C:\Program Files) then I added that to the system path. Also, you might have to reboot (or at least log off and log back on) to reset your PATH.
Well.. I tried different ways of rooting it and now I'm stuck.
when I run adb shell getprop I see that ro.debuggable is 0
This means I can't get access to my phone on fastboot mode in the bootloader.
So no root method works for me. I'm trying to find more information on this but all topics on XDA don't mention how to change this option to 1.
So, how can I make my device visible on the bootloader in order to root it and install TWRP?
edit: sorry, I could swear I was in the Q&A section

You can enable USB debugging in developer options (click the build number 7 times if it doesn't show up in settings).
