The usb port of the Ace II that I have has the usb broken and can be used only to charge the phone. According to the most of the posts Odin is the preferred way. There is a root method that consist on flashing a temporary CWM an then SuperSU but it didn't worked in the phone I have like in this thread: https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-ace/ace-2-help/problem-root-gt-i8160p-t3065503
The question is if there is any way to flash a JB or KK rom without the need of Odin.
The phone is a GT-I8160P with a XXLK2 GB rom. I do not care to use dd because i have experience with it.

I have read through this forum and I am still unclear about a few things. First off I have a vibrant and have been flashing roms/themes, ect. I just got a epic 4g and get things straight before flashing.
1. The epic is completely stock, can i just use z4 root then flash cwm from rom manager on market? Or do I need a different kernel first? If I do need a new kernel, could I just use one of the kernel flashers on the market like SGS Flasher so I do not need to use odin?
Every thread I have seen has been mentioning using odin for the root/cwm 3 process. I have a macbook pro and my desktop pc is ancient so I try to avoid using odin whenever possible.
2. Just to confirm, is it really hard to actually brick this phone? I have messed around with my Vibrant, soft bricking it a few times but never had a problem restoring a stock rom.
3. Once rooted and cwm mod flashed I can go to any rom right?
Thanks and I know there are very similar questions already posted, I just wanted to be 100% clear because some answers were really vague.
You can use z4root but you can't install cwm with rom manager on stock kernel. It is really hard to brick the epic and yes once rooted with cwm you can get to flashing. Odin is used just to flash stock roms. I used it to flash the dk28 froyo rom and I only use it if I have to. Try to get your hands on a windows computer to root it with cwm. You can run the root plus cwm that is stickied in the development section. Once that is done you are ready to go. Good luck
Im in the exact same boat dude. I've had mine for about 4 days and still haven't done anything else but update to DK28. I did the z4root first, then thee next day I did the update. Now my SU doesn't work and I can't unroot using z4root. Phone just starts to vibrate and then I get a FC. I dunno, going to have to odin once I get some time. Really diggin my epic, but the vibrant was so simple and fun.

While you may be able to use z4root to to root your phone, like musclehead84, I am under the impression that you can't install CWM through Rom Manager on the stock kernel (LINK supporting this, I may be wrong though). It may work with other kernels, but to flash those kernels, you need CWM... kind of a Catch 22. Not sure if SGS Flasher will work for flashing a new kernel, but if I recall correctly, I remember reading atleast one thread resulting the need for a restore after using SGS Flasher (Odin or Nandroid, can't remember which).
And your not using Odin for root/CWM, your using adb (included with the one click root and CWM download), which I believe can be run from the terminal on a Mac with the right adb version ('one click' OSX LINK using older joey-krim root method, but if your flashing a new pre-rooted rom anyway, will work fine).

Yes, it is fairly hard to actually brick the Epic. If you have issues flashing your phone with Odin, the most likely culprit will be the usb cable. I have also read others having luck with removing the micro sd card before flashing, or even booting into download mode (which is done by holding '1' on the keyboard while pressing the power button) while leaving the battery removed.

Yes, with a couple caveat's... If your flashing a froyo rom, you will need to make sure you also atleast update the modem to the proper one (i.e. DK28) using Odin, or flash the leaked 'official' beta update.zip while on a stock DI18 to take you to DK28 with modem, (LINK with instructions, would do this before bothering to root or anything though). And if you decide to convert to EXT4 (DK28 only), that's a whole other story.
Hello all
Previously i've only owned HTC devices, and rooted several of them with ease. Now that i've bought the Note 2, i'm faced with a problem.
I've read around a bit, and apparently you use ODIN to flash with, through i haven't downloaded it yet. (But i've read that you can also use a normal recovery like CWM?)
Is there anything like S-ON / S-OFF (for HTC devices) for Samsung?
And my last and final question, specifically for rooting the note 2 and putting custom roms on it:
Can i download ODIN, get the CWM file posted in the Omega rom thread for example, flash it through ODIN and then just go into recovery and flash the rom? Then it'll be rooted with custom recovery, and good to go?
Hope that wasn't too many questions, i simply don't want to mess anything up with my new phone

the system is completely unlocked once you have root access, no S-off needed.
your other questions are a bit unclear but i'll try to explain.
you will need odin at least once.
you have to flash cwm or a pre-rooted custom rom packaged in a .tar file using odin first.
if you chose cwm you can then install root or a custom rom packaged in a .zip.
the easest route if you have an N7100 is to install the cwm+root tar from forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1901196 using odin.
you only have to flash 1 file and it will automatically install cwm, reboot into recovery, and then root your phone.
to enter download mode(required for odin) you need to turn on your phone while holding home and volume -
took me a while to figure that out.

I'm going to try and root my Note 2 once I get home

Hello,
I'm new to Android and rooting and I've decided to root my Galaxy S3. However, I'd like to know what is the most current and safest way to root the phone. I've tried downloading the app by following the video in the Generals section but the apps seems to support only 4.0.4 and I'm @ 4.1 and a Google search seems to turn up some methods that are a couple of months back. Any help is much appreciated.
Jelly Bean does not require anything special to root. The method is the same as with ICS.
I used the Team Epic Root method.
Thanks for the quick reply, but do you happen to know if this is the safest method?
I used the same method to root while I was on ICS and had no problems. Just make sure you don't reboot the phone after you Odin the recovery to it. Set Odin to not reset device and then manually boot into recovery and flash the team epic root from recovery file. If you reboot your phone after you flash the custom recovery in Odin and don't immediately manually boot into recovery and flash the team epic file afterward, your phone will overwrite the custom recovery you just flashed and put stock recovery back on your device.

It is as safe as it gets. Rooting on the GS3 is very easy and safe (especially compared to how the HTC Evo process was). You do not have to deal with exploits in a locked bootloader, etc. You simply flash a custom recovery with Odin, and the flash a file that roots the phone with that recovery. The only gotcha (and it is not much of one) was added with LG8 which requires you to boot into recovery before booting the system ROM, so that you can root and disable the code that restores the stock recovery. That is included in the Team Epic Root for Recovery file.
thanks i'll try it and hopefully won't mess up too bad
Is there any way to restore root on ATT I747 after 4.3 stock restore without using odin. Maybe a flashible zip through stock recovery. my phones port usb port is screwed all it will do is charge.

The easiest way to root the i747 after the 4.3 update is to flash TWRP and then install the Samsung de-knoxifier and SuperSU zips via custom recovery and, of course, the known way to flash TWRP is via Odin. However, perhaps you could try using Mobile Odin (pro version) which is the on-device flasher of choice. If this works, you would have added something to the body of knowledge for others who may have the same problem. See instructions for Mobile Odin below ...

I recently received replacement note 2 from T Mobile. In the time that it took for me to get my new phone my computer was stolen. Is there a way to unlock my bootloader and root my phone without a PC? Please share.

Once you have updated your phone with the official 4.3 update, you will never again be able to unlock your bootloader or flash custom firmware. You will, however, be able to root your phone and install odin flashable stock roms or rooted stock roms. You can do this with odin or mobile odin, but i cannot think of a way to do it without a pc, because even if you use mobile odin you will need to first to root it with saferoot i believe (which requires a PC if i remember correctly), and PC odin doesnt require root and you can use it to flash a pre-rooted image but it does require a PC.
If i were you id just spend 2 or 3 bucks and get an hour in a cyber cafe, installl saferoot from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2565758&highlight=s3 and then download the image for your phones carrier and flash it in odin or mobile odin.

that is not exactly true. you can flash custom firmwares with 4.3 bootloader. but I don't think there is currently a way to root 4.3 without a pc.
