You would need a fully unlocked bootloader & although most AFTV devices have been rooted at different FW version. Only some first year FTV1's with early FW where capable of being Fully bootloader unlocked. I am lucky enough to own 4 of them.
There have been multiple new methods to root AFTV(S)'s. But no new methods of unlocking their bootloaders. So for now changing the OS on AFTV(S)'s is not going to happen.

Although there is no way to replace the FireOS. If you have a rooted FTV1 & eventually other rooted FTV devices. You will be able to change the UI. Just keep an eye on this project.

It should make your FTV function as close to an AndroidTV device as possible.

Y314K I was just given a Fire TV box 1st gen and was able to root and fully unlock the bootloader. I have TWRP installed, and since I'm just using this box for exploring alterations I was wondering if it is possible to completely replace the fire os with a pure android os? I'm having trouble finding tutorials and wondered if you could tell me if it is possible and if you know of any resources of tutorials? What do you run on your FTV 1 boxes? Any other suggestions for tinkering?

The above is still the closest option so far. There where a couple of projects a few years ago which you can find here on XDA where developers started to make a Cyanogen 12 & other FW options for FTV1's with unlocked bootloader. But development faded once only a small percentage of FTV1's where capable of having their bootloaders unlocked. And none of the other devices have that capability.
Most mods now are just launcher changes & Amazon service deactivation for a leaner FireOS. But every option still has FireOS as it's base. The AFTV2ATV project does the most changes over all.
You can find the old projects under both development sections.

Anything that could be run on a FTV2 can also be ported or modded for a FTV1.

Netflix Build Number for AFTV2 vs original AFTV - is it newer?

I have a couple of the Fire TV version 1 boxes fully rooted with fully unlocked bootloaders and the latest prerooted roms (51.1.6.3_516012020) and the Netflix version loaded is 1.1.6 build 148, which is dated October 2014.
Can anyone who has a new FTV (version 2) confirm the version and build number of the Netflix app that comes installed? If it's newer, I'm wondering if the apk can be extracted and installed on the older units. I know the regular android version of the Netflix app gets updated on a far more regular basis. According to the Play Store, the latest version was updated October 18, 2015. So I have to wonder what features, bug fixes, etc. are we missing being an entire year behind.
So anybody out there who has an AFTV2, please go into the Settings > Applications > Manage Installed Applications and let me know what you have for Netflix version number.
It just seems a bit odd to me that the regular android version is 3.15.3 build 5269 and AFTV is at 1.1.6 build 148
If there is a newer version on the second gen AFTVs, I would be more than happy to test installing it on my older units.
Thanks in advance for any help.

Netflix on the Fire TV 2 is currently on version 2.4.0 build 1032
I'm pretty it's not a special version for AFTV2, but a new version exclusive to FireOS 5
I went ahead and tried extracted the APKs for the new NetFlix and Twitch.TV apps from my AFTV2, tried sideloading them onto my old AFTV but received a minSdkVersion error during installation.
So then I tried to use apktool to decode the APKs, then edited the minSdkVersion to make them installable, rebuilt the APKs, and re-signed the APKs.
I was then able to install the new versions of NetFlix and Twitch.TV on my old AFTV, but both of them simply crash upon launch...
It was my first time using apktool so maybe there are further tweaks you could do to make them work on the old AFTV.
It's not weird for developers to have versions of their apps different from their regular android version.
These versions are built with a leanback interface, made for easy navigation with a remote instead of a touchscreen.

Thanks for all your effort trying with that. I just have issues with the Netflix crashing frequently on my 2 rooted ones with the latest roms that is really quite annoying. As soon as I press play it closes. I'll have to do some more troubleshooting.

It seems Netflix on Fire OS 5 on the original fire tv is much better. Hopefully Amazon will be rolling that out sometime... Pretty sure they had originally promised October 5th...

Yeah, it's all done. I'm just waiting on Amazon to push a final version.
Can anyone backup and upload the Netflix APK from a FireTV2. I would like to try it on my pre-rooted FireTV 1. Would appreciate it!

When will there be a new Non-Amazon Custom Rom for the Fire TV Stick 2?

Does anyone know when we'll get a new custom Rom for the Fire TV Stick 2 running Lineage OS? I've looked through their website and found roms for Android TV devices. I know its going to take awhile until the development has finished. If any android developer wants to create a new OS on the Fire TV, this is a good start doing so since the Mediatek exploit is so easy to follow :good:

It's been many years and no one has made one for any of the Fire TV devices. So, probably not any time soon? When the first fire tv box was first rooted and unlocked I worked on it, but never quite got it finished. I don't really see any point, especially because there's quite a few instructions on how to get the play store and friends working on stock software.
@rbox just out of curiosity what is required to do this?. Can you do a basic explanation how the process works eg would require mapping remote control and identifying chipset devices etc. I have no idea.

The same as porting lineage to any device. You have to create a lineage device tree for the device. Figure out all the random settings you need. All the random blobs you need. Figure out how to make the kernel compile with everything lineage needs. And then pray it compiles into a workable image.

You have to take off your Fire TV Cube and see the motherboard has a test point and UART contact for bootloader exploit.

There is no root available for the firetv cube2. Being such a low volume device I would be surprised if any development or exploits are found. What is your goal for rooting? There are alternate means to personalize these without root.

Trying to root to run a newer android version as some apps are unsupported. I brought it cheap for my family as I really don't have money for a decent new box

Well, there is no root for the cube, likely not to be any major android updates ever. Amazon usually don't do major updates. Even on the devices that have root, it takes a developer to covert a compatible rom to make work (usually with flaws). There has never been a updated custom rom that isn't based on Amazons fireOS base. To my knowledge only one fire-TV has ever even had a custom rom installed that that is the firestick2 and it was based on android 5.1 (Lineage 12.1). What apps are you specifically looking to run? Through the threads you can find some modified or look for older versions of the apps that are still compatible on apkmirror.

Amazon Fire TV Devices
Amazon Fire TV Cube (2nd Generation): Fire OS 7.2.1.2 (17951962500) (Android 9.0)
Amazon Fire TV Cube (1st Generation): Fire OS 6.2.7.1 (3590964612) (Android 7.1.2)
Amazon Fire TV (3rd Generation): Fire OS 6.2.7.1 (3590963076) (Android 7.1.2)
Amazon Fire TV (2nd Generation): Fire OS 5.2.7.3 (652613820) (Android 5.1)
You can root the fireTV but there is no way to update the base OS, it isn't an unlock and there is a newer custom rom (likely not to have one either)
Here is a link to the root solution -
https://forum.xda-developers.com/fire-tv/development/unbrick-fire-tv-stick-2-anti-rollback-t3986303
Here is a link to a custom rom (it has bugs and is still android 5.1 based)
https://forum.xda-developers.com/fire-tv/general/rom-lineage-12-1-t4016981
But back to your app issue, what specific apps were you looking to install? Maybe i have some clues, i have a couple of firetv2's i use.

Fyi- from the playstore
9Now is available on Android OS 4.4 (KitKat) and above.
Foxtel GO is available for Android 5.0 and above.
For starters, typically apps are made to be compatible with some older versions of Android. You should be able to install them, function will likely need a mouse though (from my experience with play store apps on Amazon devices). Try them and see what apps don't work...
Despite not being able to update Android versions - if you're still attempting to root, this method has worked for the Fire TV 2 (model number DV83YW on bottom of device) for a number of months now, and is confirmed working on 5.2.7.2 by a number of people.

Yes, the device is called tank. There is lineage 12.1 for it. You need to be unlocked to install.
Thank you for your response. What I want to do is swap the ROM on my Fire TV Stick (Gen 2) for the ROM on the Fire TV Stick (Basic Edition). They share the same hardware specs, but they're intended for different international markets. So, what I'm looking for is the ROM from the Fire TV Stick (Basic Edition). Is it available for download somewhere?

I use TWRP to make backups. Post your question in the unlock thread or the preroot rom thread. The only way i have ever been able to get the full stock bin file is to download it as a update, copy it out of the update folder. Is there a reason you do not want the pre-root version? you can disable root access, it may also being stock send you updates for the basic edition.

Thank you for your reply. I've owned several Fire TV Sticks (Gen 2, codename tank), for a couple of years, and they've worked great with Kodi and a few other apps. But I live in a country they're not meant for. In my country, I should be using the Fire TV Stick (Basic Edition, codename dozer), but Amazon in it's infinite wisdom doesn't ship them to my country.
According to the device spec pages I've linked above, the hardware on the tank and dozer models are "largely the same", but the UIs are different. More importantly to me, the tanks run a Prime Video app that doesn't work in my country, and they disable the Prime Video app that does work. I had thought of flashing my tanks with the dozer's ROM, but I might try flashing a pre-root version, and enabling the Prime Video app I want from root, as was suggested to me before.

Making Firestick 4K A Kodibox... should I root?

I’m deciding if rooting and flashing a rom onto the firestick with worthwhile for what I’m trying to achieve.
Currently the firestick is not rooted but is booting into wolf launcher to remove all those ads and videos for amazon prime and am using a debloat toolbox that disabled lots of amazon background apps like prime video and updates. These have greatly sped up the firestick making it much snappier. I also added launch on boot so kodi launches after the tv turns on so if I would like kodi it is preloaded all my widgets. And to keep my kodi snappy I removed all shadows and other visuals like background and such.
I’m only using my firestick as a kodi box so would rooting and flashing a debloated rom or even a custom rom help my purpose for a better kodi experience? The only possible plus I see is overclocking and maybe a better kill app method.
Could someone please list benefits for rooting that would improve my kodi experience. I don’t need to alter UI since wolf launch serves my purpose

If youre wanting to rid your device of ads , bloatware and have it running smoothly on kodi and other streaming apps then the short answer to the question of root is yes .
If you want to use the stick for prime , netflix and other established legitamised apps then no, purely on the basis of losing 4K capability(netflix, prime) there is also the question of warranty and encryption and so on .
Pros of root are ;
admin privileges , blocking ads at root level , unlocked bootloader (for flashing zips) , custom roms, custom kernels, modifying build.prop and bootanimation and so on .
Cons of root are:
some apps wont allow root and wont load or stream , prime , netflix, peacock etc from what i hear are fussy with root .
Your warranty will be affected (if you have one)
The device can become less secure encryption wise (selinux etc) .
As i said, if you want the stick for kodi and stuff , adblocking from root , and to be able to customise your stick by all means go for it .

Debloated Rom For The Fire TV Stick 4K 6.2.7.1 93/6.2.7.7 Revised NOTE: Firmware versions after 6.2.7.7 will not work with this debloated rom. It's been a few months since I've updated this guide so be cautious with installing this. The latest...

LineageOS still not ready I’d assume would be best
I guess since I’d have admin privileges I could justremove and cut back even more Resources to prioritize kodi?

Just go with fireos , debloat the junk and its all good , only other rom for mantis is LoS and its under construction just now .
So after some trial and error trying to properly flash the rom I finally got it correct using only adb and NOT flashing with fireos lol
actually is there a way to check if this version is debloated can’t really tell

You normally have to debloat yourself using either pm disable commands .
Example.
adb shell
su
pm disable com.amazon.ags.app
Alternatively you can go here :
Firestick Debloat Tool v3 (18th Sept) | TechDoctorUK
www.techdoctoruk.com
Install the app on your stick and grant its adb permissions. It will debloat some 40 junk amazon packages from /system/priv-app folder..
The answer to knowing if you have downloaded a debloated rom lies with where you downloaded it from. If its one of skel40 roms then some packages will have been removed . If its just preroooted rom then its untouched and you can debloat yourself .
Thanks for all your help now I’ll just start messing around with su and other tweaks trying to make it perfect for my needs

If you search the forum you'll find a lot more mods I currently have leanback launcher, Google voice search, Playstore and Kodi nolimits magic build all running smoothly.
Ok just so if someone comes across this I rooted my AVTV 4k with FireOS then flashed with a debloated rom that includes some tweaks that make it faster also removed animation which I needed to add one line to the section.
After that I disabled additional system apks that I didn't need and even some that people recommend not disabling but i did test my system stability before hand. You can get a list from lots of debloaters. After testing my stablity I went ahead and deleted all those that I could... some cannot be removed. After debloated and stipping down to the maximum (I lack some system functions but since I ONLY need KODI it's fine) I remove all alexa apks possible and anything prime or amazon related. If I was in doubt didn't remove it

After kodi is installed and I have tested that the launcher for kodi works preperly I went ahead and DELETED amazons launcher (maybe you want to just disable it)
Launcher for XBMC™ - Apps on Google Play

I have no other launcher so when I press home it goes to kodi when I reboot (Press and hold select button + play button) It goes to kodi. I removed all other apps from kodi but depending on how you SKIN your kodi setup you can still launch android apps from kodi but I don't have that intention. Be aware that with the amount of stripping down I did I couldnt even access settings of firestick but I was careful not to delete any apk that holds settings. You may want a secondary launcher so you can go into firestick settings to connect to new network and such... I probably overdid the uninstalling but I'm satisfied.
I ended up with a fresh install no widget kodi having 51% free ram or just over 625MB free... based on calculations total memory avaliable would be around 1275MB. After my auraMOD skin with 13 widgets and 25 items each has loaded I end up with around 500MB of free ram on my Firestick. I also reduced some kodi settings which doesn't affect my experience like no background image, no effects like overlay and blur or shadows. My firestick has become in all practical sense a KODI box. Oviously there are still some background apk that run but I cannot do anything else to stop them. Before this I tried all android root apk to stop/freeze/delete apk from running in the background but from what I could tell nothing changed.
This has helped lots with random crashes I had with kodi and I made sure that my kodi cache was within 1/3 of the total free ram so I have good buffering room. An old post online states removing root might help additionally with random unexplained crashes or playback failures. I've had these issues but seems to be less frequent now that I've cleared up more ram and reduced cache slightly. I might try removing root next. The bootrom exploit doesn't remove as far as I know and I can always enter into recovery mode via adbLink and flash roms via TWRP if worse comes to worse
I ended up removing root via KingoROOT and will report back in a few days/weeks on if it improved my kodi stability with random crashes

There is an updated debloat v4 tool @ techdoctoruk that deblots 90+ services. https://www.techdoctoruk.com/firestick-debloat-tool-v4-2021/
Ok so final update I have tested my “kodi box” firestick for just over a week and am 100% satisfied. Unrooting seems to have improved stability. I also removed sleep and screensaver in using adbLink and also increased sleep via kodi. Sleep seems to have caused some issues in kodi (seren specific I think)
Also removed widgets from 13 total to 4 as I noticed I didn’t use them as only leaving trending and recent films and trending shows and up next shows... also reduced artwork size to small and now have around 400-500 free ram which makes kodi fast and almost entirely crash free.
