Hiya everyone. This type of thread isn't new to XDA as it's on almost every device fora, but I decided to bring it over here aswell.
I'm going to share the most useful applications I have on my S3 and would like you to share more must have apps to add to this list.
Check out post #2 for some of the best games on Android and check out post #3 for some of the best widgets we can use.
1. Power Toggles - This is simply the best toggle app around. Able to toggle lots of main features.
2. Picsay Pro - This is a brilliant photo editor, but limited compared to some others. My personal favourite.
3. Rotation Locker - WYSIWYG. It locks your screen to either Portrait or Landscape. Really useful on some apps.
4. XDA App ICS Blue Colours/Themed - Our favourite forum app but with a complete red or blue colour theme thanks to our own Whiskey103
5. Home Switcher - Switches between any Home Launchers you have on your device.
6. Memory Usage - Lists all current apps and tells you current memory usage, peak memory usage and priorities.
7. PicSpeed Wallpapers - Over 170,000 HD wallpapers of all different genres, for our device.
8. Bar Shortcut - This is for the people who want their home screen nice and clear.
9. Desktop Visualizer - Makes shortcuts or widgets using a custom image and can be used to make custom icons.
10. Wave Control - Execute actions by waving your hand over the screen.
11. Solid Explorer - Solid Explorer is a file manager which with two independent panels is the most attractive, eye catching and intuitive file manager for the Android.
12. PowerAmp - The most powerful music player there is.
13. SuperSU - SuperSU is the Superuser access management tool of the future. *ROOT*
14. ROM Toolbox Pro - ROM Toolbox combines apps like Titanium Backup, Root Explorer, ROM Manager and others. A must-have root app *ROOT*
15. AirDroid - For moving files between your PC and phone using WIFI
16. QuickPic - An alternate photo gallery app, incase you don't like the default
17. AdAway - AdAway is an open source ad blocker for Android. *ROOT*
18. Tasker - The best app of its kind. It does almost anything
19. MXPlayer - MXPlayer is one of the best apps for viewing movies.
20. Photo Timeline - Lets you create a time elapsed sequence of anything you want with your camera and then play as a slideshow

34. imo - Multiprotocol IM client - Support for Facebook Chat, Google Talk, Skype, MSN, ICQ/AIM, Yahoo Messenger, Jabber, Hyves, VKontakte and Steam
35. BetterBatteryStats - With BBS, you can analyze the behaviour of your phone, find out which apps are causing major battery drain and measure the effect of corrective actions.
36. app2zip - App2zip allows you to backup apps to a flashable zip file through CWM or TWRP. Simply choose which apps you want and then click GO.
37. Shorten - Simply a URL shortener which saves a lot of time rather than going onto the internet each time.

Must Have Apps on the Galaxy SIII
Due to popular demand via PMs, I've decided to add a slot to this thread to display some of the best games we can get on our Android device.
As with the app list above, if there's a great game you'd like to be added to this list, let me know and I may well add it in
1. Pool Break Lite - If you like to play pool, snooker, billiards etc. on the go then this is a great app you. There are a few different variations to play in either single player or multiplayer online mode and even more variations if you buy the pro version.
2. FIFA 12 - This game speaks for itself. It's the latest mobile version of the FIFA franchise and is easily the best so far, with it showing vast improvements. There's a load of different cups and leagues to play through and with great graphics with no lag in the slightest.
3. World Series Of Poker - Probably the best game from EA (in my opinion). If you like to play poker I totally recommend this game. You can play Texas Holdem and Omaha in either cash games, tournaments or play for a WSOP bracelet as the main prize. Guest mode is now available for no login from Facebook is needed.
4. iAssociate2 - This is a good choice if you prefer a bit of a brain tester. iAssociate2 is a word association game you have to figure out which words and phrases are associated to each other. Sound easy? Give it a try and you can soon find out differently.
5. Need For Speed Most Wanted - Another brilliant addition to the EA family, Most Wanted finally brings one of the best racing experiences to Android. It's a brilliant game all round but the only thing it's lacking, in my opinion, is 'free roam' mode. But apart from that, it brings brilliant graphics and flawless gameplay.
6. Grand Theft Auto III - Grand Theft Auto III was a crime game which changed the future of gaming and is amazing to play on the go with our Androids. The full console game with great graphics, full features and surprisingly no lag considering it's such a huge game. Countless hours of gameplay, HD quality resolution and visually stunning graphics make this a must for our devices.

The idea to add widgets into this thread aswell was an idea taken from Goku80 and I hope you lot like it.
So, the list in this post is strictly for widgets. I'll add some widgets myself as a base, but as always feel free to suggest some of your favorite widgets and they may make it into this list.
1. Beautiful Widgets - Beautiful set of Widgets containing clock widget, clock and weather widget, weather widgets, date widgets and toggle widgets with skins/themes support!
2. Fancy Widgets - Personalize your Android home screen with highly customizable clock widgets, weather widgets, home (clock & weather) widgets, forecast widgets, and more with lots of customization options.
3. Ultimate custom widget (UCCW) - If you enjoy customizing the look of your homescreen then this is pretty much a MUST HAVE app for you. It allows the user to create their own pure custom clocks with a near endless array of options to customize it how they'd like. However you want it, you can make it with UCCW.
4. Desktop VisualizeR - Here's another really useful widget if you love to customize your screens. This gives you the ability to make shortcuts and widgets with any image you specify, rather than just the default logos. You can also use this app to give apps a custom icon of your own, which is handy if your icon design doesn't currently exist.
5. Minimalistic Text - Minimalistic Text is a widget app that displays information in a minimalistic way. It can be configured to display time, date, battery and weather information. The layout of the widget is highly customizable throughout.
6. Eye In The Sky Weather - This is for all those who like their weather clean, simple and beautiful. The app includes 12 of the best weather icon sets and the ability to add your own icon sets.

I use it with Widget Locker, great lockscreen music control that has great themes if you get the pro unlock (just $1.99 i believe)
I've been digging Gameboid and Nesoid. Snesoid and psx4droid are nice but too many onscreen buttons if you don't have a controller.

Gameboid is a great one but I haven't used it in ages to be honest. I did love playing Pokemon on it though

Notifier pro plus---gives you repeat notifications for apps you choose. great for when you get certain events or notifications you dont want to miss
auto wifi toggle-- lets you set up times through out the day that it triggers wifi. if there is no connection with in a set amount of time it turns back off. great for people who like to be connected to wifi. saves battery because wifi isnt always on.
screen on app that keeps the screen on when in apps you choose. great for well pretty much every app that you want the screen to stay on
screen caster app that records the android screen. great for if you want to show a but to a dev or show an app to a friend. you can record the screen, it can also record your voice so you can explain whats going on. you can then load it to youtube.
droid wall great security app that actually works. when set up it block incoming and outgoing data connections. with this app you can ensure that none of your data is leaving your phone with out you knowing. note that if one of your apps isnt working you may need to check what you have set up.
Lux auto brightness a screen brightness app that works very wekk when set up properly. helps me save battery. also great for at night with a loer brightness. the screen no longer hurts my eyes when i first turn it on.
Smart screen off good app for turning off the screen. uses the proximity sensor to turn off the screen if its covered for a certain period of time. great so you dont pocket dial!
this is just some of my collection that ive been gathering over the years.
most of these app are paid apps but trust me they are good ones.

If you want a security app, how about Cerberus?
LBE Privacy Guard is a great security app as well. Allows you to manage and change any permission on any app. For example, if some apps want GPS (Angry Birds Space) and will automatically turn it on for location based ads, you deny it right off the bat.
Anytime you install an app from the store, a notification will allow you to manage the permissions for that app before you ever launch it.
Another one would be Avast. A security app that does all kinds of things I don't even know what they are. Have the ability to install at kernel level if rooted too, which could be beneficial.
Zedge should probably be in there somewhere.
Never really used romtoolbox.. I've never had a reason..

I'm not gonna be adding any lockscreens or launchers to the list because there's already tons of threads on each forum that go into detail about them. You're all welcome to post them in your own list as a couple of you have
I'm not too sure on which security app I'll add yet because I haven't really tried many yet.
I'm also undecided about a wallpapers app at the moment. I used to use Zedge until I found out about PicSpeed HD Wallpapers and I've used it since. Then there's Wallbase HD Wallpapers that FrameCityJackal mentioned aswell.
Any other wallpaper apps I should check out?
THIS ISN'T A GUIDE NOR A TUTORIAL HOW TO SETUP YOU PHONE. I JUST WANT TO SHARE WHAT I'VE DONE WITH MY PHONE TO MAKE THE BEST OUT OF CM10.1 AT ITS CURRENT STATE.
My primary goal when adjusting settings and applying tweaks is always battery life, performance comes second and looks of the ui as last priority.
So here's a listing of my current setup:
1. Installed Greenify - to hibernate user apps to prevent background execution.
2. Installed Autostarts - to disable automatic startup of system and user apps. I like this app coz i can control each app per activity.
3. Installed Titanium Backup - to freeze (disable) system apps and even remove some that i don't really use.
4. I have only one widget in the home screen, the clock. I disabled the rest of the widgets in Autostarts including Quick Search Bar. When i need to search the internet i just long press the menu button to open Google Search/Google Now.
5. Aside from the Quick Settings Panel, i place shortcuts in the home screen to easily access system settings to turn on/off features.
6. I use Script Manager to create shortcuts to run my scripts (like enabling/disabling fast charge).
7. I only install apps and games that i really use. But i have a TB backup of more than 170 apps in my sdcard, kept in case i needed them.
Can you give me a link which the system apps can be frozen?
I really hate google service running in background but I dont know which can be frozen by not crashing system

We all have em. Apps that we wouldn't want to part with ever. I love finding new apps that do crazier stuff. So what are some apps you can't live without?
I NEED pie controls. This dev made it work without it being be baked into the rom. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1330150 after having it on beans roms I couldn't live without it. You must be rooted though to use it.
If you aren't rooted, try Wave Launcher. It is the same thing as ISA (invisible swipe area) in pie controls. But I've never gotten ISA to work in pie. You just swipe from a set location to layout a list of your apps that you want. Works over any other app without needing root. Loved this until I got pie controls. Now I don't need it as much.
Package Tracker I use Pro edition. But i buy so much stuff & hate monitoring shipments. This does it all, it and can auto check at set frequencies for you. Hourly or every two. And you can sync it online. So if you use multiple devices all can share the same list just by one uploading it.
MSecure or Keepass - who wants to remember hundred of passwords. At work mine change every thirty days. With these, remember your One master password to get in, and the rest is stored in a secure database on the phone. Put in web logins. Insurance info. Whatever. I like MSecure better cause it can sync with Dropbox to save your encrypted file. But Keepass is free. I think both have pc apps the let you enter all info on that then import the datafile to the phone.

ES file Explorer everyone loves it.
Alarm clock Plus great alarm app. Hate losing my phone alarms everytime I reset. This has a backup function. Win!
Wifi Analyzer great app for finding wifi. Troubleshooting wifi problems. See what channels are being used the most. How good signals are, etc.

BeyondPod - Best podcast indexer and player. Tons of features and an expansive index of podcasts. Use it in my car daily so I don't have to listen to the same crap on the radio. Plus you can download and save podcasts to your device.
Root Explorer - Has always been awesome and got even better with recent updates: Multiple tabs and file copy progress indicators.
Open GPS Tracker - Awesome for bike rides, walks, hikes, or disproving a speeding ticket from a rookie cop. Shows your track on a Google map with distance, speed, elevation, etc.
Tapatalk - loving to read some topics on XDA and etc ;D
Power toggles - you can access your toggles easily
Poweramp - the best music player on Android for me
Solid explorer - the best files explorer for me
Nova launcher - great and fast launcher
Appdialer pro - I can find my files much easier and quicker

Velis Auto Brightness - Total control over automatic brightness. Set your own curve, speed of adjustment. Lots of presets that work very well.
Audiomanager Pro - Set audio volume presets and assign them to a schedule (ie: automatic mute at 9:30pm, preset for work, preset for after work, preset for weekend, etc)
Root Explorer - Still the best root access file manager around. Doesn't look like a 12 yr old designed it (cough, ES File Explorer, cough)
Airdroidhttps://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.sand.airdroid - I transfer so much stuff back and forth between my phone and PC. This makes life much easier. No need to plug in. I can also do my messaging from my computer if my phone isn't nearby.

My biggest gripe about Waze it does not tell you what side of the road your destination is at.

Depends on the device. Download the free version and try it. I paid for the full version just out of respect for the developer who bought a Verizon Galaxy S3 (he's in the UK I think), just so he could get it to work with Verizon and Samsung's crazy settings. He figured everything out and it was a must have app on my S3. On my HTC One, not so much because the LED can only be red or green which really limits the options. Different devices work differently so it's just one of those things you have to try out. A rooted device is obviously going to have more freedom though.

I'm sure they will add that feature in the near future but definitely an awesome navigation app. I think Google acquired them so that might help them enhance their product.

Actually, I'm not sure if "Tray" is the right term.
I'm running stock T-Mobile G3.
When you tap that icon with a six dots surrounded by a white circle, it shows you all your installed apps. My only choices are small icons or large icons.
Is there any way (setting, app, or mod) that would allow me to display (and launch) all my apps as a list? Ideally, with alpha jump links down the side (so, I could jump to the apps that start with "T", for example).

When you tap that icon with a six dots surrounded by a white circle, it shows you all your installed apps. My only choices are small icons or large icons.
Is there any way (setting, app, or mod) that would allow me to display (and launch) all my apps as a list? Ideally, with alpha jump links down the side (so, I could jump to the apps that start with "T", for example).

try nova launcher(google play store) then go to nova settings/drawer/drawer style/list

Absolutely! That's the great thing about Android. You can even choose to go with something completely different than Samsung's launcher. There's lots of different launchers that support themes. Nova and Apex are two popular options. Themes are also available for Samsung.

I prefer not to root or tinker with my primary business phone because I don't want to have something not work as intended and miss a call or appointment.
The level of customization you can do with launchers and themes these days is almost on par with what you can achieve with a rooted device.
In addition to themes you can also download and install custom icon packs to customize the look of all of your icons.
For widgets you can get something like the Beautiful Widgets app that lets you customize various widgets for the device. It is very popular for people who like the HTC type clock widget look on their home screens.
Just do some searches on the play store for themes, icon packs, widgets, keyboards, etc and there are enough customization options to make your head spin.
For Home screens / App drawer / Folder, any Launcher will do. My all time fav, and most reliable recommendation is easily Nova Launcher.
- Nova lets you customize the font size, label colours, icon sizes, icon packs, homescreen grid, app drawer grid, homescreen gestures and so much more.
For custom button remapping, Button Remapper works perfectly without root. It will let you set custom actions for your physical buttons (swap the recent/back if you wish, or add hold functionality)
- The app is a bit limited without root in regards to added functionality, but its something!
- I believe the non-rooted version also allows you to map volume keys to add Music skip / pause functionality. (Correct me if im wrong!)
For global app / service disabling, definitely use Package Disabler Pro. It has a built in list of (currently) 97 apps considered unneeded, and gives you full control of every app.
- This has been proven to save battery btw!
For added Toggles in the Notification panel (not QuickPanel) there are hundreds of working apps that add their own little notification bar, fully interactive, that shows up as a notification card.
- It may seem a bit redundant considering Samsung's built in QuickPanel does mostly everything, but for a few things that may be missing (ie. Hotspot, Mobile Data, or specific functions like opening apps, setting gps/data to specific modes etc).
For ad blocking, you can use AdGuard. I havent personally tried this app, but it is highly recommended by most users in this forum.
For button backlight disabling / modding, you can use Button Backlight 2.
- It allows you to turn off button backlight completely, add a custom time, or have them on all the time
Android is so vastly open, even without root, if you ever feel like you are missing a certain function / feature, theres a very high chance that a solution would have been made long ago.
It never hurts to google what you wish to do. When I first got my Note 5 for example, the first phone with button backlights, I wanted to turn them off completely as well as swap the layout of them from recents home back, to back home recents. A few minutes later and I found myself using the two apps mentioned above, and a happy camper!
well it looks like I am really grateful to samsung to give me the possibilities under the hood. My dev friends scared me in every way saying that touch wiz is bloatware, that people think is really taking the control of the system, instead I found it effective, and most important of all I am happy samsung is not taking coltan from congolese mines.

which tutorial do you recommend me to customize my themes? if there is an app, Gui super, otherwise I am also an android developer, so do not mind also to write some java/xml. Also i guess there is some design involved, which software should i use photoshop or gimp? Last but not least, as I use to test my apps, installing a lot of themes will decrease the perform, or the fact that is run one per time will not affect performance? thank you guys. Customization is everything for me, as bosters creativity and make the day more exciting
EDIT: I am wondering if downloading themes is safe in terms of malicious code.
