Hey guys,
I think I destroyed my HTC One X. I just bought it a month ago from Ebay, and it worked flawless. At some point the display just turn off. I restarted the phone, heard the sound when it starts and even the softkeys worked. But the Display was still off. After after a few restarts the display turned on for a minute, just to freeze after that and turned off again. The phone was still on though.
However I've read a bit around and found out that it could be a cpu heat problem, which could be true because my phone was way too warm sometimes. So I removed the display and put a tiny little bit thermal compound on the cpu. Somehow I managed to rip off the connection cable to the display ... also I managed to rip off the little black cable near the soft keys. The soft keys still work though.
When I start the phone the starting sound comes, the softkeys blink when I restart the phone, you hear the volume buttons etc. So it seems the phone is fully working. Just the display or touchscreen is damaged.
Some pictures:

So, what can I do?
Do you think I could just send it to this site http://www.directfix.com/product/REP-0063.html and let them repair it? Or did I destroyed my phone too much already?
Thanks in advance.
Well, the top cable is ripped off,you can't do anything at this point. The bottom one just seems out of slot as far as i can tell from the pics.
Basicaly you can send it to the repair shop, but i don't think that you can only change the cables, don't really know what to say...Could cost you some to repair it.
I don't want to only change the cables. I want to use this full repair service:
"HTC One X Complete Screen Replacement Service (Includes LCD & Digitizer)".
So they change the cables and put on a new LCD & Digitizer as far I understand.
But do you guys think they will put back the other cable back in slot too?
Please just answer, do you guys think they can repair it if they put on a new screen & digitalizer?
I don't see why not,you can also contact them and explain them the situation. Those cables are quite easy to put back with the proper tools so you don't have to worry about it.
Hi all,
the wife's HOX died suddenly, won't turn on at all, wont recoginse being plugged in into either the wall or the PC, no lights, nothing.
Unfortunately she has taken a number of pictures of our 5 month year old son on it, which obviously we would like to have back!
I'm competent with taking the phone apart and putting it back togther, however what I want to know is how the Samsung Flash chip is connected to the mainboard.
I can see black glue around the outside of it, but I am unsure if the underlying pins are also soldered down.
My intention was to razor blade the glue away and then buy a knackered (but working) HOX and transfer the chips over.
Obviously I wouldnt be able to do this if the chip is soldered down. I have monkey hands when it comes to soldering things.
Is anyone able to offer any insight?
I've had a google and read the datasheet for the specific chip, but it says nothing about how it is connected.
Thanks in advance.

I really can't see this being successful, sorry. I'm fairly sure the chip is soldered down, and the chances of damaging the chip are very, very high if you want to try and get it off.
If the phone didn't come into contact with water a JTAG recovery might be possible. It may not get the phone working again but it could get your data back. Alternatively companies like DriveSavers have an excellent reputation for getting data off flash chips, but it'll cost you in the region of $400 - $1400 (I got a quote a month or so back, when I thought my HOX was finished.)
I really wouldn't recommend trying to remove the chip though. You could do irreparable damage to the chip, which would render it completely unreadable.

Try first change the battery to see if the phone will start again it is the cheap way and most secure
de4life - thanks, I've had a quote for data recovery from Kroll. They want £95+ to look at it and provide a list of what can be recovered and then between £195 and £395 for actually recovering it for me. Far too expensive!
As for JTAG, there's been no water damage whatsoever; I've had a quick Google and it says this is more for Routers. How could I do it to my phone? Im not fussed about getting the phone working again, just want the contents of the flash storage back.
Thant - alas, the was the first thing I tried. New battery has made no difference. Which is annoying as her old Desire Z showed the same symptoms, we bought a new battery and its works again. She's currently using that until we decide what to do.

First thing's first, if you do go down the data recovery route try to avoid companies that charge any type of analysis fee. Kroll are a well known company but I've not heard much good things about them. I went through an extensive search of companies when I thought I'd killed my HOX and found DriveSavers were the best in terms of reputation, and they don't charge a fee to look at the phone. They are very expensive though, perhaps more so than Kroll, and you have to send the phone to the States which is daunting and costly in of itself (I assume from your £ quotation that you're UK based?).
It's good that there's no water damage. It's difficult to say what can cause the motherboard to suddenly stop working like that, but it's unlikely there has been a serious short circuit that could have affected the memory chip. Have you tried dissembling the phone completely and putting it back together? It may sound ridiculous to even try it, but when one of my older phones suddenly died I managed to get it working by taking it apart and then just putting it back together again. There are a lot of connections within the HOX motherboard framework that could easily have come loose. You might already have done this, but just a thought.
In terms of JTAG, it can be done on mobile phone motherboards with the right equipment. It's usually used for soft bricked phones to reset the software back to its original form if it's been corrupted, but I have seen cases where hard bricked phones were brought back to life using this method, including the HOX. It's not really something you can do at home (not cheaply, anyway) but there are companies that provide this service. One of the more popular services is here: http://mobiletechvideos.mybigcommerce.com/htc-one-x-jtag-brick-repair/ - I believe they post on here from time to time as well. Again, based in the States, but significantly cheaper than data recovery and as far as I've heard very professional. I don't know of any mobile phone JTAG services in the UK, though they probably do exist.
Keep in mind the data chip on your phone is likely fine. Even if the motherboard has stopped working, the memory chip itself is unlikely to be affected and will still contain all of your data - albeit in a scrambled form. If you send it out to companies then they can potentially damage the chip beyond repair, if you go down the route of sending the phone out to repair/data recovery companies I would urge extreme caution. If it's still on the chip the data itself isn't going anywhere. Take your time and make sure you're sending your phone to the right people, because one false move and your data is gone for good.

Which sensors? Proximity? Light?
Ive bought some cheap knock off screens to repair my own phone and all the sensors are on the replacement piece. They must have missed a connector or given you a bad part.
On the knock-offs, i had a proximity sensor not work and the light sensors are not that great.

light sensor, proximity sensor,G-sensor(which causes motion launch),camera flashlight all are not working when htc service center changed my phone's display.
are the sensors available only on the display part?, then they replaced display with fake one nd took money about 8500 INR
they are giving me **** reasons that phone was rooted, i told them there is no relation between display, sensors and ROOT.. i have lodged case against them will see what happens, HTC services in india are very very bad..
Yeah, probably a knock off screen. The screens would cost me about $65usd. If the touch digitizer (the top glass) edges start popping up around the bottom edge, then it's definitely a knock-off screen because all of mine did that. Crazy glue helped with that.
I've never heard of a HTC service center that you can take your phone to. Usually you mail it to HTC.
The phone isn't very easy to take apart if you've never done it before. You must disassemble everything to replace the screen. You can google a youtube video to see how it's done. Not easy for a first timer.
My guess is they messed up or missed connections. I can't remember, but I don't think there is a separate connector for flash, so for the camera to work, but not the flash, is odd.
It is possible for you to disable some sensors with root, but not accidentally. You'd have to manually disable.
I'm not too sure where the g sensor is on the phone.

thanks for your reply, let forget the flashlight but what about light, proximity and G-sensor, even i had htc desire (old one) rooted from 6 years no sensor problem till
and this flagship phone one m8 giving problems :v
the Display material description is "FRU-SUB ASSY, LG DISPLAY,BLACK,LCD" which costs me for 8.5k i.e ($127.877) , even the phone i gave to htc service center which is authorised by HTC, i didnt tweaked phone it was S-ON, i didn't opened phone lol, i just told them to change display but now things are messed up, i did complaint and they took my phone for revision from last 2 weeks ,no phone calls from them nothing, all they telling are bull**** reasons and causes
can you please tell me where G-sensor is by searching or asking someone
even didnt tweaked any hardware part of my phone, the firmware was of HTC in my one m8 , what should be the problem ,? they really messed up with my phone.....i told them that i need replacement of phone(like apple do) , they are contradicting their statements too, they told me to change motherboard which costs around $245. what the hell
due to such poor service in india HTC need to improve their services or people will stop purchasing HTC in india
If they are authorized, call HTC directly. They can probably step in to help you

i actually fade up from 2-3 weeks for this phone, thanks for helping though
Hey man were you able to fix that problem? My phone has the same problem (sensors and flash) after I got the battery replaced. Funny thing is that they're also saying it's because of root ( of course it's not )
About not working sensors

Hello folks, i think i solved this issue ... i have a htc m8, just like all of you .. I had a extra battery so i was like. okay its time to replace this one and use this "new" battery i have for this phone. I saw so many videos on internet about tearing it down ( i had exp opening stuff before) I did it without problems actually. When i finished, i found myself with no sensors at all... none of them .. after some hours of digging. I noticed that this problem came along "display replacement, and battery replacement" .. later i found that all the sensors are in the display itself.. Then i opened it again and swaped the old battery and make sure i did connect everything. When I finished, i find myself with the same problem.. and a new one.. my screen was blinking rapidly ... i was like, rlly bro ... so i opened it again for third time.. and this time i saw something i ignored before... every ribbon was protected with a special tape, which is metalic like in the upside, they lost its glue and became loose, so i glued with a soft glue them back in place, for what i know, they do a job, something with faraday cage .. after i secured every "Tape" of this... i closed back my phone and TADAHH... i recovered almost every sensor xD ... my gyroscope is kinda weird. takes sometime to respond.. but i will leave it like that. most important for me was the light sensor and proximity sensor which are working perfectly ... well guys, that was my experience with this phone.. for those who are brave enough to open this challenger phone.. pay attention to these details i said before, and maybe you will get your sensors back.... thanks for your time.. i just made an account to help with this issue
I'm approaching this problem for a second time after about one and a half years of just having the phone stashed in a cupboard. I have made a post regarding this in 2018 but there wasn't any way to access the data inside back then. Now that it's been some time i'm again wondering if i can get any use out of this phone.
Basically what happened was that the touchscreen stopped responding out of the blue and never recovered. I gave this off for repairs back then (I didn't purchase hardware warranty for the phone) and in the repairman's infinite wisdom he said there is a faulty "IC" in the display panel that keeps on burning out even when replaced. He apparently did the repair three or four times but the same issue appears a few minutes after booting up.... So in terms of hardware, i know this isn't fixable.. Or atleast that our approach to the whole thing was wrong.
But now i'm wondering if there is any way to get the OTG working so i can connect a mouse and use this as a... I don't know like a tab or something. I can still get a ton of use out of this thing if OTG works. Problem is OTG was on timeout, And given that the phone was on idle for more than 18 months, OTG is now turned off. Which means unless i turn it on from the in device settings, i can't get it to work.
Any way i can get any sort of use out of this phone? I spent too much on this phone to just throw it away haha...
PS: Old thread FYI - https://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-5t/help/help-data-oneplus-5t-unresponsive-screen-t3824092
why not just buy a new digitizer LCD frame assembly?

Hallo,
the display of my POCO F3 is broken, meaning black screen. The device itself starts normally. How can I save my data? USB debugging is disabled and I can't activate it because the broken display of course.
Could anyone help me to save my data?
Thanks in advance!
Your data is safe. However you may need to wait awhile to access it.
Your best bet is to get your screen replaced.
Call around to local cell phone repair buisnesses and see if they any replacement screens in stock for the poco f3. If you have a xiaomi repair center near, even better. If no one had one in stock, your best to order one yourself. (this is where you may have to wait a bit as it may have to be shipped from china) if you're comfortable replacing your screen yourself, do that. But having the broken device in hand, with its replacement screen, and taking those into any cell phone repair store, they should be able to fix you up pretty quickly and shouldnt be too much money since you did the leg work of retrieving the screen.
That's the route I would go, or at least get the ball rolling in a new display coming in the mail. Because trying to retrieve that data without usb debugging on, may be a bit of a rabit hole.
Hi,
To save your data, did you try this (with a PC of course)
https://github.com/Genymobile/scrcpy
Maybe you still have access to the phone despite the broken screen.
Let me know if it worked.
Not well read, "USB debugging is disabled", so it will not work....Sorry

Thanks for the suggestion, but honestly I don't think it's worth it. I have already received offers and they are from 190 € upwards. And I do not trust myself to exchange the display. In this case, wouldn't it make more sense to request a data backup from a company? I don't know how expensive that is though.
Isn't there any way to backup the date in recovery mode? I know that pressing the start and volume up button will get me into recovery mode. I've read somewhere that from there I can back up my data via the MI PC Suite, by pressing the down button twice. Is that correct? Regardless of that, I haven't yet managed to get into recovery mode with the broken display.
You can get a display and just connect it (don't remove the old display, just connect the new one).
It's silly that "ro.adb.secure" only means that it has to handshake and popup to allow ADB.
There really should be a mode where you say, "Only the 3 computers that I've already connected are acceptable and allow no further new ADB clients".
Then *everybody* could leave ADB on all the time.

Could you explain to me, how to do this or provide a link to a tutorial for example?
You'd just open the back of your device. The screen hooks in with an orange flex cable. You just disconnect the old one and plug in the new one out the back, just flopping around. You won't have touch, but you can hook up a USB mouse.
I don't know your model. I can't get more specific.
It's just that a new screen by itself out of China can't be too expensive?
And if you like, after you get your data you can try to actually replace the screen yourself.
I have got access to my daughters P30, with broken display, over MHL display. The difficulty is just to find the right place on the display to allow MHL display.

But won't I need to enter my pin first to allow the MHL display?
If the touch is still working you may be able to enter your PIN.
Get a similar size device, go to the PIN screen, mark the position using clear wrap and a marker. Transfer the positions onto your screen.
Or use a scrap of plexiglas, mark it, then drill small holes and use that to mark your phone.
Or use an usb-keyboard.
