As in unlocked direct from HTC (SKU 617)? You should be able to go onto wifi and manually check for an update to download & install the OTA - assuming you have stock everything (no custom recovery, no root).
If you've got the latest TWRP installed, I believe there is a way to install the OTA via zip, but you'll have to check out the forums for more information. You could also download the executable RUU (http://www.htc.com/us/support/htc-one-m9/news/) to install via PC - or use the SD card method to install the RUU. Recall that RUUs restore your device completely to stock and erase your phone.
The HTC One (M9) ReadMe/Stock File Collection Thread by Flippy498 should have everything you need.

If the carrier releases the update, no matter where in the world the phone is it will be updated. If you were with att you just wait for att to release an update. If your device is wwe or dev then the update will come straight from htc.
You can get your carriers updates anywhere in the world.
If you updated to android 7 then you have a dev edition and your phone is up to date. When a new update is released you will get a notification.
If your phone is rooted you cannot accept ota's without damaging your phone.

Orangre branded HTC One M8 -> Unlocked -> Lollipop. Possible?

I read that for Unlocked edition of M8 lollipop update with sense 6 already started rolling out. I have orange branded Polish phone with 3.33.69.1 compilation(android 4.4.4, kernel 3-4.0-g07962b9). I would like to change to official non-branded rom and then update to lollipop. I've rooted and changed roms on some previous android phones I had, but I would like to make sure that changing from orange branded to normal is possible, and that I will be able to receive official firmware updates afterwards.
i'm also interested in this. anyone?
Well I'm o2 UK branded and ive received update

You need to wait for an OTA Update to LP Firmware with a LP update with it.
Otherwise you'd need to S-Off. Pay up the $25, and S-Off. You'll have every firmware prior to release and be able to update.

From my experience Orange is very slow with allowing over the air updates, and I would prefer not to wait.
S-Off is achieved by using Sunshine, and Sunshine costs 25$, right? Once I do that I'll be able to change firmware, from what I gather.
The only thing I don't know is - where to get official HTC one m8 rom with no branding. I would like 100% legal way to get official non-orange m8 firmware. For example HTC site offering firmware updates to use with SD cards? Also, do I need to change CID? Wouldn't I just need to unlock bootloader trough htcdev and then install other firmware?

How to update to 5.1 and root?

Hey guys,
I have a friend who has an unlocked M9 and earlier on I helped him root it by unlcoking bootloader, flashing twrp and supersu. He has recently told me that there has been an OTA update that keeps popping up on his phone and that this update will help with the camera and the overheating of the phone. I've been searching a lot through the forums but haven't found a tutorial/process on how to update and root. How can I do this?

He may be getting an OTA notification, but the OTA will not work unless his phone is completely stock. What carrier is he on? There are RUUs for several that will update him safely (though they will wipe the phone), and then he can unlock and root the same way as before.
Alternatively, you can pay $25 to s-off with the Sunshine app and manually update the firmware, then flash a 5.1 rom. This approach is trickier but won't wipe the phone or unroot.

Its unlocked but he has it on AT&T carrier. I remember seeing a number saying 132.617.6 or something like that. We tried updating before by doing a factory reset on the phone amd then trying to update but the update always failed. Luckily we made a twrp backup and just restored that.

There is a RUU for 5.1 on AT&T. That would be the safest way to update if you don't want to s-off, but it will wipe the phone.

Awesome, where will I be able to find this RUU? I found a thread but I just see RUU updates for Europe, Asia, T-mobile, etc. No AT&T.

Argh, I'm wrong. It was Sprint that released the 5.1 RUU, not AT&T. But what you can do is relock, run the 1.32 RUU for AT&T, then take the OTA, which you can do safely at that point. Then just unlock again and root.

yeah, so weird. The latest rom column says 1.32 the download link is to the 1.32 exe but the "view" link under Details takes you to the news page I linked to where you can download the 2.6 exe

which update rom should i use?

I have an unlocked at&t htc one m9, I bought it locked to the at&t network then unlocked it.
I'am looking to update the phone using the official rom from htc but am unsure on what one to use - the one for the at&t version of the phone or the one for unlocked/developer phones?
thanks in advance
Unless you're S-OFF, you can only use updates from your carrier.
If you get your phone to S-OFF state, you can change the CID. This will allow you to flash other updates (like the developer version update - often released well before any carrier update).
The downside is that with S-OFF, it is much easier to brick (as in hard-brick - never coming back) your phone. Always good to read and re-read instructions and ask questions before flashing.

I can't help you there, sorry. Check around the forums - the 'sticky' threads will probably get you going in the right direction.
I assume you mean carrier unlocked, not bootloader unlocked. Obviously you haven't converted your device, in which case, you should only flash official AT&T software.
I got the Developer Edition and the only difference between the AT&T M9 and the Developer Edition is
AT&T M9 has AT&T apps and bloat ware, and last to get any ota updates.
Developer Edition no carrier apps or bloat ware and first to get ota updates.
If u don't use or care for all the AT&T apps and want ota updates soon as they drop then go ahead and convert your AT&T M9 to the Developer Edition.

Personally I would root and profit but that's me..
Other option is the 1st answer in this thread, once S-Off you can roll back to stock if necessary.

HTC One M9 on Bluegrass Cellular

Back in August, I got a HTC One M9 from Bluegrass Cellular. (The phone came with Android 5.1) I decided to root it and try a custom ROM. I downloaded a snapshot for CM13 himawl. (Since that's the variant according to Download mode) I flashed it in TWRP only to get an error about sbl1. I since found an unofficial nightly of cm12.1 himawl built on November 17, 2015. It flashed and works fine to this day, but I'd like to have newer features and better security. How would I go about doing this? I can't seem to find the correct RUU. I tried the unlocked RUU to see if it would work, but it was to no avail. I'm S-on if that helps.

I'm pretty sure that in order to use a Marshmallow-based ROM (ie, CM 13), you need the Marshmallow firmware first. I imagine the same will be true for Nougat ROMs....though I don't think we've got anything beyond stock just yet.
I imagine that if you were able to achieve S-OFF on your phone, you could apply the appropriate RUU to get you up to the latest available firmware for your phone. To be clear, I don't know what that is (I'm not familiar with the himawl models) - but it should be possible.

I believe that's what's going on here. I'm just trying to see if there are any alternatives or RUU's known to work with my s-on phone before I resort to the $25 investment of Sunshine.

Just for the fact you get an extra chance to unbrick if it goes wrong is worth the $25. IMO S-OFF is a necessity for htc phones.

I tried the test in the Sunshine app, but it said to flash stock or near stock rom. I mistakenly didn't backup my stock ROM before flashing cm12.1. Anyone know a ROM I could flash to s off?

You're on Android 5, right? Android Revolution HD 14, which is built off of stock Android 5.1.0, should do the trick.
Very important sidenote: Don't change the MID/CID or the firmware of this device! It's a CDMA one and therefore not compatible with the GSM firmwares like the dev edition or the WWE one. Otherwise you'll end up with a fancy new paperweight. Just stay with the SKU (the three numbers between the second and the third dot in the firmware version) it is currently using since not even the different CDMA firmwares/devices are compatible with each other.

In my case, the SKU is 605. Is there a newer 605 I can update to access Marshmallow? I recall when I was stock, I tried to update to MM through OTA in settings, but apparently my carrier never approved the update. 5.1 appeared to be the "latest."
605 is the verizon-branded firmware. There definitely is an android m update for your phone.

Awesome! With my CID being LRA__001 would I be able to flash this?

It's Verizon WWE. That's not the same as sku 401 (WWE).
Either you try that one or you download the exe from the HTC US website.
I can't say for sure whether it'll work. According to the sku the RUU should be flashable. You'll need to try by yourself. An alternative would be contacting llabtoofer's RUU service. However that one isn't for free. (Either search for it via google or use the direct link in my google sheet if you want to use that service.)

Please provide me with stock firmware for Bluegrass Cellular.

Can I use the HTC One M9 unlocked RUU on my T-mobile M9

I have a T-mobile M9 however it is not receiving the 7.0 update. I am wondering if I can just use the unlocked RUU in order to upgrade to 7.0.
Thanks

Check out the readme thread - it'll give you instructions about changing your MID & CID to match the developer or WWE SKU to convert your phone to those versions and receive the Nougat update. Be advised that wifi calling is not available if you switch.

I don't have s-off and can't afford sunshine so
I'm afraid you're stuck and will have to wait for T-mobile to release the update.

Exactly what the readme spells out: if you correctly flash the RUU corresponding to your SKU and OS version, your phone will be wiped & reset to stock.
All other RUUs with detect the mismatch and fail.
