How can I change my keyboard to an Apple IOS one?
Hey all, just copped a US Verizon HTC 10. Haven't unboxed it yet. If I fire it up, can I take any OTA and still unlock the bootloader / root it when I want to, down the line?
I come from many Samsung Galaxy S phones - this is my first HTC - from Galaxy S experience, certain updates made rooting / safestrapping a pain or downright impossible without backpeddling to an old version of the phone.
From all I've read, I see no big red flags about <this version> or <that version> is not rootable / bypassable. It looks as if the HTC 10 is a lot easier to get around, load on a custom recovery and ROM. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
Thanks very much!
Got a couple of questions as I'm coming from a Moto X with near-stock M, and would like something a bit closer to that experience on my HTC 10. I'm not new to using custom ROMs, but I'm no expert either.
1) Is it possible to change the default clock app (click action on HTC clock widget), lockscreen (to stock android) and/or lockscreen clock widget without root or custom ROM? Lockscreen apps don't quite do it for me as every single one I've tried lags quite a lot (homescreen flashes).
2) Is it possible to install a custom ROM and stay UNrooted (for payment services etc which refuse to work on rooted devices)? I have no real need for root access other than to change my device's default apps.
3) What would be the go-to ROM and/or customization path for a GPE-like experience on the HTC 10 (Stock Android w/o Sense and HTC apps, OTA updates, stable)? Like mentioned above I have no need for performance enhancements, further tweaks or even root access. In the past I'd go for official CM, but that's not an option now I suppose.

Trying to remove sense 8 completely, tried titanium backup but it just removed the updated version and shows in the play store to update. Tried solid browser to remove everything but fails, tried app system remover on playstore but that fails as well. Is there any zip that can remove it like on viperrom?

Hi
some of the carriers lock their devices down, so they won't be bootloader unlocked, even through HTC. As far as I know Sprint or Verizon are one of the carriers doing this. Can't tell you for sure, as I don't use those carriers.
If unlocking is possible it can be activated in developer settings and done via HTCDev. This you'd be able to flash the latest TWRP as well as root your device using SuperSU or phhsupersu.
The 10 gets, to use someone others words, finickery as soon as you start tinkering with other firmware e.g. debranding, up- and downgrading. It's by far the most complex HTC device. And I'm using them quite a long time as you can see in my signature.

Verizon bootloader cannot be unlocked. Your only option is to S-off with Sunshine, which then allows you to do whatever like flash Roms, root, etc. You should do that before flashing any of the latest updates, sunshine may not work with latest/future firmware.

Regarding your questions some hopefully helpful answers:
1) not as long as you're using a Sense based ROM. As soon as you use e.g. Viper10 in full de-sensed mode, or any CM/AOSP based custom ROM, yes.
2) in this case it'd be better to take the disadvantages named in 1), just unlock your bootloader, flash TWRP, flash magisk, and flash e.g. the Viper 10 magisk version. This you'd keep a full stock based ROM passing safety net, hobtaining full carrier features, and could load the custom ROM as a magisk module to obtain all tweaks and additions.
3) currently I'd say crpalmer's CM14.1, or one of the Resurrection Remix ROM. All are, quite stable and N based. Alternatively you could use Viper10 with a lot if tweaks and a de-sense option.

Thanks, I'll look into Magisk - that one's new to me but looks very interesting.
Haven't read up on/understood it fully yet, but is the "Magisk version" just a mod "layer" on top of the stock ROM? As in I'll still be "stock" but able to disable/tweak parts of the OS?
And TWRP doesn't break safety net by itself? That's what I was starting to worry about.

I'd say it is a mod directory, as magisk mounts the additional folders needed for the tweaks to work as well as replacing mount points of specific tweaked, or replaced system apps. In a custom Sense ROM it e.g. virtually replaces the prism.apk installed on system, by the tweaked one, without uninstalling the original file. To be correct without even touching the system partition of your stock ROM.
Same can be done to single apps. The GPE dialer magisk module is an example for such a mod.
After installation of magisk and magisk root you can easily reinstall the stock recovery, as far as I know. This is exactly how you preserve the safety-net functionality.

OK so I ran Sunshine on my Verizon HTC 10 and got bootloader and s-off. Changed cid to us unlocked and flashed us unlocked ruu. Took about 5 otas and now running 7.0 Nougat. Attempted to flash tarp thru download mode and looks like it was successful but when I boot into recovery I get this black HTC screen with red letters! After a few seconds the phone will just reboot into the os! Is there anything im doing wrong or that I need to do?

Doesn't sound like you flashed twrp successfully. Try again and pay attention to the command window messages.

What I ended up doing was unlock bootloader thru HTC device website and reflashed TWRP after and that seemed to do the trick! Funny thing was I didn't get the unlock screen after flashing the unlock token I got from htc asking if I want to unlock my bootloader!

If your on Nougat make sure you flashed the latest TWRP 3.0.3-0 unofficial which you'll find over at the TWRP thread, in the downloads tab. It sounds as if you fried to flash TWRP 3.0.2-6 which isn't compatible to Android N firmware and thus won't boot at all.
Edit: nvm saw only your previous post at first. Kind if tired. Will go to bed to read a bit better tomorrow.

After upgrading Viper10 1.2.1 to 4.4.0, when I press on a contacts name, I now have to hit call afterwards, whereas before, I could (from the dialer screen) just start typing someone's name using the numbers and then tap on their name and it would automatically start dialing without hitting call. Can I change it back?

Weird. I'm running Viper 4.4.0 as well an don't fave this Bug at all. Doesn't seem to be ROM related. Did go up from 1.2.1 to 4.0.0 right away, or did you take all the Updates provided in between. I always updated to the latest ROM as soon as they published it, This the last time I went from 4.3.1 to 4.4.0.
Did you always check the md5 of your ROM download to make sure the download went fine!? Did you try to reinstall Viper, using a clean flash?

Thanks for getting back so quickly. I went straight from 1.2.1 to 4.2.0 after flashing the lastest RUU from sprint. Then up to 4.3 and now 4.4 but I noticed the issue after the initial 1.2.1 to 4.4. I didn't check the md5, but I will and then reflash and see what happens.

I used to have this problem on my Verizon 10, and it went away when I converted to U.S Unlocked (and wiped my phone in the process). I'm not sure what did it exactly, but perhaps a clean flash will help. If not you can also try to update the phone apk.
Help @@
I'm getting a HTC 10 soon, and there's some question that I need to ask before I modify anything.
I saw there's some thread about radio missing and other problems when rooting (something to do with force encryption), is that still unsolved?
And here's a list that I'm planning to do, mind help me checking it?
Unlock bootloader and root
S-off
Change CID MID and RUU to US Unlocked firmware(Nougat)
Install Leedroid (Marshmallow, can't live without xposed)
Any help or advice is highly appreciated

Hi guys,
I saw many threads popping up in the Q & A section about applying updates on a stock rooted ROM. So i though it would be helpul if i shared my experiences and also clear some misconceptions.
This Thread mainly applies for those looking to upgrade from 2.09 to the recent 2.22/2.24 ! It may or may not work for any previous updates.
Q) My phone is rooted, Bootloader unlocked and CWM installed. How do i update to 2.22?
Ans.)
1) Backup your root using Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper.
2) Flash the stock recovery for your area using the All in one kit (or you can use the command line if you're familiar).
3) Download the update, click install, sit back and enjoy !
ITS that simple.
Q) What do i do if i cant find stock recovery for my latest version?
Ans) The recovery does not seem to have changed from version 1.56 to 2.09. You can flash the older recovery provided, you've checked your region is correct.
Q) Do i need to re-lock my bootloader for the update to take place?
Ans) NO! You don't need to re-lock anything. It updates perfectly fine with unlocked bootloader. Just flash Stock recovery !
Q) Do i lose my apps/settings/cache?
Ans) Since its an OTA from HTC, you retain everyhting!
Q) Will i lose my root if i update?
Ans) You will! Thats exactly why you're advised to backup your root.
Q) My updates fails with a red triangle and exclamation mark, what did i do wrong?
Ans) You need to understand that during the update, several stock apps are patched. If any of these STOCK APPS ( the ones that came with ya new phone) are uninstalled/frozen/meddled with, an error will pop up.
Q) How do i identify the cause of the error?
Ans) When the red triangle pops up, press the Volume UP, Volume DOWN and LOCK keys at the same time for a second and release. You should see the cause of your error. Try to restore/unfreeze the app thats causing the error. If that is not possible, try posting your error here to see if experts here can help.
All the stock recoveries can be found on this forum. If however u've a doubt, i'd be happy to help.
This guide is not perfect and may contain errors ( i've tried to make it complete to the best of my knowledge). I'm open to suggestions and questions

Hi, thanks for the super explanations - last two really helped me - at least I found the reason why my phone does not want to Updates.
I send thanks to your instructions displayed mistake - I phone from T-Mobile Czech and the application of course I deleted it - it is useless.
Do you know if this can be downloaded somewhere, possibly where I got all this ROM mentioned in the error? I deleted more applications, so it probably will want to install these
I watched a lot of the internet, but I found none.
Sorry for my English ...
Well, if you made a backup if the current Rom/apps, then just extract and install the apps. Or else, I think you can extract the app from ruu if your version. You'll have to do it for each of the apps you uninstalled. That's gonna be a hell of a job, if u ask me.
I think its better you stick to the current software, or of you really wanna update, reset your phone via ruu. And then update.

I have some experience with modding Google Nexus 3 with success but having some trouble with doing the same on the M8. Trying to install ARHD 9.1 on this phone but I'm getting stuck on the HTC logo after install. I have been following the instructions here and am successful with custom recovery (TWRM) and root. Before installing the zip through recovery, I wipe system, data, cache, dalvik cache. The installation itself is successful but it does not boot. I have been able to reinstall the stock rom found here with success so I'm able to recover from it and I also have no issue with installing ViperOneM8.
I tried using the firewater exploit but it looks like my phone was already patched and it remains S-ON. I was reading about the necessity of S-ON here but it doesn't seem required for ARHD, but it's the only thing left I think is causing the issue.
What am I missing..?

Thanks, I didn't realize that mike's stock de-bloat ROM was compatible with receiving OTA updates. There's a lot of good information around here but it's almost always scattered and sometimes not very clear.
I have also since found these stock updates which should work rather well for returning to T-Mobile stock with the bloat if needed. My "OS" and main-version using "getvar" still returns a blank value, but it looks like that can be common and not a detriment to updating OTA in the future.
I don't like the Kid Mode and all that stuff, hiding it is not sufficient as I like to have like a slim build so I may start again by returning to the ARHD stock ROMS if I can accept the 4.4.3 update OTA (as long as I return to stock recovery before then) and try to customize from there.
Hi!
I got an M8 a few weeks ago, and regretfully wasn't thinking and allowed a few OTA updates.
So I was at firmware version 2.22.531.5, Android 4.4.3. There were 2 other OTA updates pending that I ignored because I realized that it may make it harder to root or s-off. I realize now I already performed the updates which would make Firewater not work.
I unlocked the bootloader, and flashed TWRP 2.8.0.1, then flashed the latest SuperSU.
Now the update notices stopped.
Few questions:
1. Does anyone know what updates beyond the version above were sent OTA, and how beneficial these updates are?
2. I'll probably get sunshine...but might wait. Can I install a different ROM without S-off?
3. Since I'm at 4.4.3, I may stay with stock until 4.5 (or whatever L is). But I definitely want to get some junk off the phone. I was going to use Titanium and uninstall a bunch of stuff... I have had a few HTC phones before and could identify what apps were part of the ROM framework, but it's not as easy to discern what apps I need to keep on this phone. Does anyone know of a thread that talks about what stock apps can be uninstalled? Or, in the alternative, if you have deleted apps, can you let me know which ones?
I know that's a lot of questions... Thank you in advance for any answers!

If I had just gone with sunshine from the start (and not gone with the token from HTC to unlock the bootloader), would I have still gotten OTA updates?
Which change (custom recovery, unlocked bootloader) stops the OTA updates?

you would have been fine with OTA from the start, the following stops OTA updates:
custom recovery installed
missing system apps removed
incorrect firmware etc
You can freeze apps with Titanium, and if doing so doesn't cause any issues, go ahead and uninstall.

Ok...But before I read this, I was just going through settings and I checked the "check for updates" section, and it wants to install firmware version 2.22.531.6. So maybe if you are still using stock (despite installing custom recovery), you still get OTA updates?
The update sounds minor given it's incremental version (but tmous/HTC claims it's for important security updates), and I'd probably ignore it... But unfortunately, because I checked in the first place and perhaps because I'm on stock (minus a few apps I'm trying to delete: Amazon, Facebook, Kid Mode), for whatever reason the update reminder stays in my notifications and is pretty insistent.
Can I install this without calamity?
Thank you!

You will get the OTA notification just fine with custom recovery, and it will download as well. The problem is, when you go to install, OTA requires stock recovery and will fail when it doesn't find it. Might also bootloop looking for stock recovery, can't remember exactly.

The OTA zip should be in your download folder on internal memory, delete this then uncheck auto update checking and u should be without the constant notifications.
If you want to update, u will need to reinstall a fresh nand with all stock apps included

Cool... And I have read that as long as you do it that way (using echo -ne '\x00....' and not "fastboot oem lock" when in fastboot mode with adb running) you will get "***LOCKED***" back and not RELOCKED.
When it's RELOCKED Google can't confirm your information so the promo won't work...But if locked, you can do it.
Now I just have to do it all..
Thanks!!

When it's RELOCKED Google can't confirm your information so the promo won't work...But if locked, you can do it.
Now I just have to do it all..
Thanks!!

Today I rebooted my device into bootloader mode to check some stuff and noticed that Secure Boot display "no RPMB" next to "Enabled". What does it mean?

Did you recently receive a refurbished device? "No RPMB" in effect means your bootloader will automatically re-lock itself on reboot. I believe it has something to do with a replaced main board.

Yep, I received it yesterday, they replaced motherboard. So it's mean no more mods? That's the reason why I bought this device. Can it affect DRM protected multimedia, because I can't watch videos in Play Movies app?

There's a temporary workaround if you're a stock rooted user:
Here's a reddit link regarding a workaround:
https://www.reddit.com/r/nexus5x/comments/5hj0r0/bootloop_after_lg_replaced_mainboard_bootloader/
However, this isn't helpful if you're a regular custom rom user as you'll notice in the details.
As for DRM, I think so. I have been looking for confirmation about DRM being impacted by this "No RPMB" status. I've only seen one other person outright mention this. It's hard to find users who get this issue and even harder to get them to respond on my inquiry on whether they can use DRM apps. What issue are you seeing with Play Movies? Can you open the app? Or are you given an error message of any kind? I'm interested from the troubleshooting perspective so that I can help ID when others have the same issue. Also, can you confirm this affects other multimedia apps with DRM protection? I was thinking that Hulu, Netflix, HBO would be apps that utilize DRM if you have subscriptions.

I don't care much about custom OS, at least for now. I can open Play Movies browse feed and library, but it ain't play any video (Couldn't fetch license (error -1)). Unfortunately I don't have subscriptions in these services, but I used local TV streaming app that uses DRM and it showed error 203 (whatever that means). I tried also watch movies from Google's app on YouTube, no luck.

Netflix app will crash few times, try to hide with Magisk Btw. Re open few times, like 10 and login. Then you will be redirected to the homepage.

Unlock bootloader, flash newer version of it and newer radio. Reboot bootloader, unlock it again*, flash rest of the stuff.
*In my case OEM unlock toggle doesn't disable itself after bootloader lock itself. It also stays enabled even after factory reset.
To get root simply flash TWRP instead stock recovery and install SU package of your choice. You can also run customs on locked bootloader and use Jolla's multirom if you want, just keep TWRP installed**.
**Honestly I prefer 4core TWRP modded, it might be life saving one day.
If you use Oreo and want to downgrade it to Nougat or Marshmallow just flash system and vendor in TWRP.
NOTE ABOUT RADIO:
Oreo's radio MIGHT not work on every Marshmallow based ROM (example: XOSP, multibooted Stock - they doesn't detected SIM card also baseband is unknown in my case) it work on CM13, not sure about call quality. It work on every Nougat based without issues.

i was able to flash stock rom via fastbook (had to unlock bootloader 3 times, everytime it rebooted, but it worked tho)
only problem, when i install twrp and press reboot phone, it will only boot to twrp! and i have to type in a decription password or something, because i unlocked the bootloader and android should have deleted everything, but didn't cause i would have to reboot for that, but it will only boot in twrp .. so yeah, that's where i got stuck .. any idea?
otherwise i'll resell this thing and maybe get an htc 10 or a nexus 5x with stock mobo
Hi all,
I currently have stock 8.1 installed on my refurbished Nexus 5X with NO RPMB, and would like to install a custom ROM (Pixel2ROM from argraur).
If possible, I prefer NOT to get root. Maybe it helps passing safetynet.
As I understood, I should do following steps:
- Unlock bootloader
- Flash stock ROM. -> Is this step necessary since I already have stock 8.1 installed?
- Flash TWRP
- Reboot directly into TWRP
- Wipe data and cache
- Flash custom ROM
- Flash Magisk or superSU -> Without this step, would TWRP get replaced with stock recovery? Is Magisk or superSU better?
Can you please check if the steps are right, and answer the 3 questions.
Thanks!
EDIT: I tried without flashing the stock ROM nor root. Everything went fine and TWRP remains installed.
Hello I created a thread trying to help with this cases.. If someone with better knowledge see a better option, please say it there to update it..
NO RPMB (how to install TWRP, a new ROM and using Magisk)

Without the magisk part its like you are using a normal rom with a normal boot image, just need to dirty flash the new rom..
With the magisk part it would need to make a new patched boot image..
So at least you will need to extract the new boot image of the new rom file, use it on magisk and patch it, after that I dont know... to my method work the first time it was needed a clean installation, but didn't tried it yet because the new update of my rom developer needed to be a clean installation due to many changes on the rom, so i didn't have opportunity to try update normally but when I do I will update my thread with what to do on that case and if it works..
Hello everybody!
I am fairly new to the modding world of android, all I know is that you need an unlocked bootloader to install a custom recovery to then root or install a custom rom. I have a specific set of questions to upgrading my phone software (Lenovo P2a42 on android 7.0):
1) Do you do anything after waiting for 14 days on the OEM unlock screen? Does it auto reset the phone, will a pop up appear, etc? Does it automatically unlock the bootloader or do I need to do adb fastboot oem unlock to finalize unlock?
2) Is there a complete all-in-one guide to installing a custom rom (bootloader unlock, TWRP, flashing, dealing with problems (encryption, fingerprint, wifi, safetynet, etc), etc) from scratch (stock rom)?
3) Is there a way I can back everything up (and recover of course, stock image and recovery, and anything else I might need to go back to factory defaults) in case I screw anything up?
4) What is the least buggiest / most popular / most supported android pie rom available for my phone (Lenovo P2a42)?
5) Anything I should know before proceeding? For example, I know it voids warranty and official support, potentially loosing google playstore, but is there anything else I should know?
I might require further assistance, as I have absolutely no experience. But hey, I gotta start somewhere right?
Thank you for your time.
1.on day 14 the option to unlock is shown in the settings menu.
2. I used this
https://forum.xda-developers.com/lenovo-p2/development/lenovo-p2-root-tool-t3800838
3.TWRP has a backup option in the Recovery menu.
Read the TWRP threads to understand better.
4.for me I like 8.1
https://forum.xda-developers.com/lenovo-p2/development/rom-aospextended-rom-v5-4-t3774641
But am currently using 9.0

5.anything else to know?
Just make sure you read the thread for whichever ROM you use.
And then enjoy

The 8.1 rom you provided is AOSPExtended, is there a 9.0 version of it for the P2a42?
Thank you for your time.
