ADB Sideload Error: unknown volume for path - Google Pixel XL Questions & Answers

I just ADB sideloaded NMF26Q over NMF26O using the full OTA files from Google.
It seemed to work fine, but I did get the following error in the recovery adb sideloaded screen:
Step 2/2
E:unknown volume for path /cache/recovery/uncrypt_status
Anyone seen this before? Is it normal? The sideloaded seems successful.

Yep, I updated the android tools before I did it. Using Ubuntu Linux.
Also, my XL 32GB is completely stock, locked bootloader etc.

Weird then!
It does seem to imply it as successful, but I'm guessing in about the update has not completed?

It seems to have been successful. Build.prop shows all the expected correct values.
I tried sideloading again, but same error.

FYI, had exact same message when updating sailfish (non-XL) from NMF26O to NMF26V. Can't find a problem post boot (and correctly shows NMF26V for Build number)

Had exact same error and the only search result led me to this thread. Until someone in the know comments I guess.

It doesn't seem to be an actual problem, the sideloading process still has a flag in it to throw that error message if it can't find the uncrypt status file at that path but phones that use the dual-slot partition system no longer have a separate /cache partition. Someone just hasn't gotten around to commenting out that location check for a/b partitioned phones yet.

Got this error today updating from 7.1.1 to 7.1.2 on my Pixel.
Thankfully as noticed, doesn't seem to actually cause any issues.

[GUIDE][VIDEO][VZW] Flash 4.0.4/IMM30B Manually on an Unrooted/Locked Bootloader

I have created a YouTube video showing you how to flash the Android 4.0.4/IMM30B OTA update manually over 4.0.2/ICL53F on an unrooted VZW Galaxy Nexus with a locked bootloader.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dQ1HuteSnDE
Hope some of you find it helpful! The first 6 minutes is more or less intro stuff and background. If you want to just cut straight to the meat and potatoes, fast forward to 6:00 or so.
thank you for this, will try this tonight.
Also this link was updated for ICS and the Galaxy Nexus for getting ADB and SDK setup.

This update worked perfectly
I was able to get all the way down to chmod mempodroid section, then when I enter the ./mempodroid and the numbers, I got an error message saying segmentation fault and cannot proceed. Any idea on how to fix this issue? I left you a reply on the Youtube video as well. Thanks.
Awesome! Worked perfectly.

Yep. My video will work for any OTA as long as your phone is running 4.0.2 when you start the update. So as long as the OTA file is ICL53F -> Some other build, the instructions in that video will work fine.
Thanks for the walkthrough; everything works well, but as far as installing the new IMM76K -- you say you've been able to get that to work? I keep getting the error "Failed to verify whole-file signature". I checked to make sure that after copying the file to the cache folder that the file size remained the same, and I downloaded it (straight from Google's servers) multiple times, but I continue to get that result. Do you have any idea what would cause that? I'm definitely 100% stock ICL53F, stock recovery, locked bootloader, etc.

Nah, used my laptop, thanks though. Even did an MD5 hash on it to make SURE. I have no idea what else to try at this point. Not going to bother rooting as I'm sending it back for warranty on Tuesday.
I keep getting cannot stat update.zip: no such file or directory
i downloaded it to my desktop
Edit: Got it to work, just changed file to "update" instead of "update.zip" ... worked like a charm

[FIX] Are You Stuck on a Boot Loop to Recovery and cant find a fix?

So like many, I took a stupid OTA on one of the roms (CleanROM) and got stuck in recovery boot loop. I tried all the methods I could find on xda but none worked. I then started reading all the way through threads and found the fix... wish they would update the original posts... so for those in this same predicament, here is how I fixed it so you don't have to read through everything.
so the FULL ADB method code looks like this:
Code:
adb shell
dd if=/dev/block/platform/msm_sdcc.1/by-name/fota of=/sdcard/fota-backup.img
dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/block/platform/msm_sdcc.1/by-name/fota
dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/block/platform/msm_sdcc.1/by-name/misc
exit
adb reboot
I of course take no responsibility if this doesn't work for you. I got the original and extra code in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2451696 and all true credit goes to them. I'm simply putting ALL the information in the one original post of this thread in hopes of saving someone else a lot of time trying to find that extra line of code burried in the other thread.
I ended up doing this as well and now have my phone back. My problem now is that I have the notification of that update and I can't get it to go away.

I personally switched to a ROM that was already based on the update. I haven't looked but I'm sure there is a way to turn them off.

You can get rid of the notification by freezing the "Software Updater" app in Titanium Backup.

What ROM did you end up going with? Each time I try a ROM the WiFi calling does not work and in my area I have to use that more than I would like.

Agreed, which is why I said that the other thread is where I found the fix... but the original post in that thread didn't actually offer a fix when I got stuck in the loop. As a result I spent a lot of time trying other attempts to fix as well as combing through threads before finally finding the extra line of code to make it work.
So I posted a new thread so that someone else doesn't have to waste their time like I did trying to find a fix.

I'm using this rom currently: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2595586 as I too need the WiFi Calling feature.
If you are on a T-mobile based rom, the way to 'freeze' the update is different than the others.
T-mobile roms use 'Google Services Framework' for the update, and obviously you can't freeze that app.
So, what you do is d/l a program called 'Autorun Manager'. Then inside that program, scroll down to 'Google Services Framework' and disable 1 receiver.
The one you want to disable is called 'com.google.gsf.update.SytemUpdateService$Receiver' Just disable that (by unchecking it) and then reboot. You will not receive a notification to update ever again.
Also, go into the folder /cache and delete the FOTA d/l. You will need R/W permissions in the root directory to do this. So use whichever file manager you prefer for that.
The FOTA d/l is easy to spot, it's a 150mb approximately zip file with a bunch of chars and should be the only file in that directory. There are a few folders as well, but, ignore them and just delete the 1 file.
I'm in the same situation - reverted back to stock rooted with twrp recovery and now boot back to recovery. I haven's used adb much, but do know how to open the cmd window in the adb directory on my computer and it appears I'm connected to my d800. However, when I run the adb devices command I see the device code and recovery listed. When I type the first line of the code in the first post, adb shell, I get ~ # ←[6n and can't type in any additional commands.
Am I missing a step - or just not understanding the process??
UPDATE - Nevermind - I just typed in the command dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/block/platform/msm_sdcc.1/by-name/fota using TWRP's Terminal Command and the phone booted right up to Clean Rom.
Thanks vegasdavek for your repost on this fix!

[FIX] build.prop variety fix (aka contact manufacturer problem)

Hello everybody,
this is a fix for the rather common build.prop variety problem on nexus 9 (and maybe others). This is the error-message that users often see after boot:
Android System
There's an internal problem with your device. Contact your manufacturer for details.
The problem occurs because of a check that google implemented in Android 5.1 which compares /system/build.prop with the values found in /vendor/build.prop. If they differ you get that error message. All one has to do to get rid of the error is to change the 3 values in /vendor/build.prop according to the values in /system/build.prop.
Doing this manually after every flash is cumbersome so I created an update-zip that corrects the values in /vendor/build.prop in a generic way (it should work no matter what rom you use). It mounts /system and /vendor, extracts the relevant information from /system/build.prop and creates a new /vendor/build.prop. I successfully tested it on my nexus 9 so I decided to release it to all of you.
Just install it via your recovery and you are done! This has to be done every time you flash a new rom.
Tell me if it worked for you!
cheers, chris
Works for me. Thanks!

Hey wfyjay,
sorry to hear about your nexus. Well, my fix only creates a property-file which stores version-information in /vendor and should have nothing to do with your touchscreen problem. However, as fleischbanane said, have you tried flashing the vendor image which is included in Google's factory image?

Well, that's odd. If you flashed back to stock then the vendor-partition (as well as all the other important partitions) must be in their original state. I'm afraid your touchscreen problem is unrelated to my fix. You could post a logcat (adb logcat) on the forum and someone might be able to figure something out or relock the bootloader and send your nexus in for warranty. I'm not sure if I can help you any further.

Hi, this file is supposed to be flashed via the recovery (TWRP, CWM, ...) just as you would do with a normal rom.
Worked for me, running Broken 2.4
Could just avoid all of this and update bootloader and vendor to 5.1.1

Hey there,
well, the error occures as soon as the values in /vendor/build.prop do not match those in /system/build.prop. Most roms only flash /system - leaving /vendor completely untouched. And since most roms change /system/build.prop in every release which in the end causes the error message to appear. At the end of the day, there is no mechanism that ensures that the values of those two files actually match. In an ideal world, roms should provide /vendor as well. In a less ideal world, roms should patch /vendor/build.prop themselves. In _this_ world, roms just don't care so I created this update-zip.
Hope that clears things up,
cheers gladiac

Alright, no problem. So you do have a /vendor folder. That's good! Is there also a file called build.prop in it? And if there is, does it happen to have the following 3 lines in it?:
ro.vendor.build.date=something
ro.vendor.build.date.utc=something
ro.vendor.build.fingerprint=something
If it has those 3 lines - go ahead and try my apk. If it has more lines you can pm me the /vendor/build.prop as well as the /system/build.prop and I will have a closer look.

Problem: Bootloop and "software install failed"

Hello,
hopefully you can help me with my seemingly bricked Honor Pro 8 because of root and stock rom update procedures. I bought the phone with amazon and the package seemes to give me the information to have an EU-version of the phone.
The fastboot get-oem-information code or so also puts out the status of an European bootloader.
Regarding my working steps first of all the phone took the new update. Then I was successful in unlocking the bootloader, installing TWRP and rooting it by supersu.
But after that I was curious about the "Magisk" rooting abilities. Therefore I tried a superuser-unroot via script finding inside this forum following by flashing a extracted boot.img of an update.app file of a DUK-L09C432B130 update. After ending in a bootloop by trying the 1.30 beta version of magisk I was able to boot the normal android desktop after I uninstalled the beta version and having flashed the normal 1.20 version.
But then I tried to install 2 certain modules inside of magisk. In consequence the problem was to see the rebooted android not to load any icons. In the other side it put up the message of not having enough mobile disk memory after some minutes which couldn't be true in fact. So I tried a factory reset inside TWRP and also a full wipe. Disappointingly I haven't been successful in rebooting android once more.
Therefore I unseccessfully tried to flash the Full-OTA-MF stock rom of DUK-L09C432B130 in two versions and the L09-C432b120a via the EMUI-install mode by pressing vol+ and - and power buttons. To do that I prepared a SD card as a exfat format. But I just received the message of "software install failed" when reaching 5 %.
So I got to the frustrating point not to know what stock rom I can flash in another try or doing anything else. I would be very glad if U could help me in this desperating situation. :fingers-crossed:
Thanks and best regards.

That is my problem not to know which version to use because three dowloaded EU-versions weren't successful to install. It resulted in an error at 5 % of the 3-buttons-install mechanism.

you download the nocheck recoveries from my rebranding guide, download the corresponding firmware by morph (important!), flash both recovery images just like stated in the guide, boot into recovery mode like you would do to boot into twrp, do a factory reset, reboot and insert the microsd with the dload folder from extracted downloaded firmware and boot into force dload mode (vol+ and vol- and power) - the installation should start now and reset everything back to full stock.

Thank you very much OldDroid. You're my hero. It worked fine.
But to install the new 130-update the phone starts inside TWRP and ends with an "error 9" and the words "block image verify", "asserts failed". Could it be possible to perform the update by starting the forced update process by pressing the three hardware buttons on booting? And is it possible not to wipe the data and losing root by using a update?

Could you explain me a bit more please? Is it the standard system update ins the systems menu, here it wants to load the 2,9 GB file. Updating this way with the "no check recovery" resulted in an checking error at about 12 %.
Or could it be via recovery shortly after starting the phone? But there are no choices to choice. It just automaticely begins installing something stopping at 5 %.
Hope you can help one more please.

soooo, if you flashed one of @-=MoRpH=- 's firmwares, your device is back to stock and the recoveries have been overwritten again! I don't recommend flashing OTA updates or other things through the NoCheck version as it is only intended for worst-case cenarios.
But could you tell me the single steps to update from Morph's DUK-L09C432B120 version to the newest version DUK-L09C432B130?

Stuck at boot.. can get into bootloader but not sure what to do next...

Hi everyone, this all started when I tried to flash a patched boot image for root and seemed to get worse from there. There's no data on the phone that I care about so just wiping it and getting it to boot would be preferable.
I've tried using the skipsoft toolkit (I have the ultimate version if that helps any) to try and get it to flash a freshly downloaded stock image, but for whatever reason after answering all the questions it extracts everything, does all the checks, then says "device is not set" and just jumps back to the main menu.
I've tried downloading the factory image right and running the flash-all script, it goes through the entire process which looks promising, but then just reboots the phone, I get the nice "your device is corrupt" message, press the power button to continue, but then it just hangs at the white "Google" splash screen with the little unlocked icon at the bottom, and doesn't move past that.
I know the version that I had on here prior to the problems was 8.0.0 (OPD1.170816.010, Sep 2017), so that's the one I've been trying to work with.
Not really sure where to go next, hoping someone has some advice for me.
Thanks everyone.
how long are you waiting for it at the splash screen? let it go for about 20 minutes before you do anything else.
other than that, go into recovery, wipe and try to install factory images again
Never use a toolkit, they can hide error messages and displays that can help diagnose some issues. Always try the step by step methods to rescue provided by the excellent guides available here.

Thank you very much for your response. I left it at the splash screen for a pretty long time.. probably about a half hour at one point.. nothing was happening.
However right now when I boot into recovery I get the little android dude on his back and it says "No command"..

Thats correct, while on that screen, hold the power button and tap vol up, you will then be in recovery, do a factory reset.
Also, make sure your adb/fastboot are up to date.
I would recommend trying to install the latest 8.0 images as well.
If all else fails, wipe the devices, grab whichever stable system image you want, then manually flash all the files 1 by 1. See HERE for some guidance.

Thank you again for all the advice.
- Downloaded 8.0.0 (OPD1.170816.025, Nov 2017)
- I believe my rookie mistake was using the previous versions of adb/fastboot that I've had for a while.. on google's SDK website it clearly says ***26.0.2 (October 2017) Add support for Pixel 2 devices*** in their changelog.
- Extracted the factory image and ran the flash-all script
Looks like a success, booted into the initial android setup right now after like 30 seconds. I appreciate all of the help.. I honestly wouldn't have thought of updating those binaries without being advised to.

Circling back to how this all began, do you think those old binaries would have caused this to happen in the first place?
What I originally did was push the stock boot.img to the device, used Magisk Manager to patch it, then pulled the patched_boot.img from the device. Then booted into the bootloader and did
fastboot flash boot patched_boot.img
I know it was an old version and it would be a complete assumption that that's what went wrong -- but do you think there is a chance of that? (asking because I'd still really like to root this thing)

honestly, Im not sure. But I also didnt think it would make a difference when flashing the stock images back, but it does. I guess anything is possible.
Yep.. it definitely did. I guess this is a lesson for knuckleheads like me who start messing around before properly updating everything.
I just did all of the same things I did earlier, and it booted fine, with root. Lots of wasted hours over a dummy move.
Thanks again for all the help!
I am having the exact same issue, but I cannot seem to find a fix. I have updated my adb & fastboot. I am trying to update my device to the latest 8.1 image. Currently, my device is on 8.0. I ham not sure what I am doing wrong. Are you all unzipping .zip image file inside of the factory image zip as well?

That zip inside the factory image needs to stay zipped. You can extract it for the purpose of getting the boot.img for use at a latter date. However, if your flashing the full factory image, then it needs to stay zipped :good:

Thank you. I didn't know that I had to click and run the flash file. I thought I could just use the flash all command

It's the same thing (either way is doing the same thing). Just be sure that if you want to keep your data that you edit the .bat file and remove the -w switch and save before running it.

On second thought I think that it didn't work because I didn't have the factory image unzipped inside of the platform tools folder? The good news is that I'm up and running

This always causes a bootloop for me. Happened from December to January, and just now January to Feb. WTF am I doing wrong?

Go back to the basics. Make sure you only have one copy of adb/fastboot on your rig, and that it is the very latest (december). Add that folder to your path statement/environment. Download the FULL image (not OTA). Open that zip file and extract into the same ADB/fastboot folder. Do not unzip the included, nested zip file! Open flash-all.bat and remove the -w switch and SAVE. Boot your phone to the bootloader, and then run the script either way (clicking or fastboot window). There are SO MANY better guides/tutorials out there to follow step-by-step. Maybe read/post in those if you have any further issues. Best of luck.

This was my mistake when I was having all of those problems. I was using older versions of adb/fastboot. Everything looked like it was installing alright but then it would just keep bootlooping.. was very frustrating. It was a relief when replacing those binaries with the updated ones worked flawlessly.
if you have managed to get it work then have fun otherwise just use deuces script as per the instructions provided in op.
