Rear camera focus issue - Moto Z Play Questions & Answers

Hi,
Im loving my Moto Z Play. But im getting this issue when i try to take pictures at low light, dawn or night. Is that the camera will try to focus but i wont.
- I tried putting my finger on the sensor
- Flipping the camera
- Trying to focus a light source
Still no luck
The issue will come and goes from time to time.
Any one else with this issue or anyone knows how to solve it?

I experienced the same thing with my Z Play, back when I had it. Had to return it because of network problems, but the camera problem was a big part of it too. Sad to see that the moto Z play has these problems, as it's a really good phone otherwise.

Dont expect a high end camera on a phone that has a camera mod, wich is the selling point here..

The camera sure does have focusing issues. This would have not happened if Moto would have sticked with a Sony sensor instead of a cheaper Omnivision lens. Even then the sensor is pretty promising. The focusing issue could be easily fixed by a software update. Hope that happens with the Nougat update.

Yeah, this problem persists with low light photography, the focussing is taking too long than expected, too much long, that you get tired of smiling!
Hope, this issue is fixed when next update rolls out, till then, its a not so major issue

[Q] htc desire camera problem

hi,
few days ago I dropped my desire on the ground and since then I have this camera issue - I cant focus objects that are more than 30 cm far from camera - it's all blury. in close it works very good, like it should.
all that i could figure out is - that focusing mechanism stucks at certain point and cant focus objects in far.
i wanted to ask if anyone has had similar problem?
is this camera defect repairable or should I buy new one? and are cameras for desire sold seperately anyway?
Thanks in advice.
The Camera isnt like a digital camera, there is no Optical (moving/mechanical) zoom, its all Digital Zoom, cameras are repareable and you can proably pick one up off ebay
Oddly enough when you take the picture and see it on the Phone/Computer is it blurry??
http://content6-foto.inbox.lv/albums137027374/martinzg/htc/focus.jpg
in title there is link of the example of what I get from my camera
Oddly enough it looks like tap to zoom on the keyboard, but with things in teh distance they are slightly blurred as an out of focus camera effect, oddly enough have you tried flashing the same ROM again??
Additionally you can always look at the repair option just as a safety net, ebay should have cameras (might be hard to spot to start off with though) and you can always look to the shops for repair info/advice, just dont tell them you dropped it like i did, as it appears warrenties dont cover accidental damage (damn Apple Store)
there is no changes when I take photo with flashlight - it's still blurry.
so, do you have any idea why pictures in distance is out of focus?
couldnt it be some kind of mechanical defect?
I have the exact same issue martinzg.
Will focus up close but not on anything over a foot away.
Contacted HTC this morning waiting for a reply.
I have the same problem here.. any news?
exact same problem here
old post, but I have the same issue !
Anyone a solution ?

Camera focus issue

I have camera focus issues... When filming, the device continuously refocus, going from sharp to trouble to sharp during filming..? Resulting in useless video clips..
Anyone else having this issue?
once in a while i noticed this as well...but not in all videos
Hope it's some kind of soft bug they will fix, because once it starts the video is pretty useless..
I've got the same problem, mainly when there's less light.

Video camera glitches
Same sort. of snags, refocussing during videos but worst keeps hanging at end of video recording screen goes black an phone hangs. Requires a reboot to sort.
Tested it indoor and outdoor, got a videoclip of 30sec where the focus goes blurry and back 5 times... *sigh*
I don't know too much about cameras but I think they did a foolish thing with the focus.
Maybe I'm just going to sound really stupid, since I don't know a thing about cameras, but i would be glad if someone corrected me here.
The situation is that their algorithm decides there's a need for a re-focus, fine, so there's a question whether this algorithm can be improved or not, lets leave it for now.
What htc does, when the refocus is needed, they loop all the states of the focus and choose the best one .. That is wrong in my opinion, because it takes time from our video.
I believe they could try only two more states, one above and one under the current focus state, if the picture doesn't improve in either of them, there's no point in trying the others.

Blurry Camera

Whenever I try taking a picture it takes a few tries to get it right and not blurry. I noticed many people have not had this problem as there aren't many posts about it but I find it annoying. I am coming from an HTC Sensation and that phone didn't have this problem. I think the blurriness is caused by the slight movement caused when tapping the shoot button. I also noticed that when taking photos with voice commands this problem doesn't show. I already have it on auto focus mode so can anyone tell me what else I can do? Just got it and was trying not to root or flash for awhile at least.
Have you tried gong into your camera settu ng and turned on anti-shake on? Is your lens dirty? Have you dropped your phone? If so you may have jarred something lose...try those first ones and see if that fixes the problem.

Anti-shake should definitely be on. But also, instead of tapping the shutter button, hold it down until you get the beep and green autofocus box on your target. Then, when you release the button, the shot is taken. Much less blur inducing vibration in that motion rather than in tapping. It's amazing the manual doesn't even mention that. "Burst shot" also sometimes yields good results. More pics to sort through later on in that mode, but multiple pics taken all at once increases your chances of finding a more desirable and less blurry shot out of the bunch. Good luck!
The autofocus is on and lens is clean. Also is there any way to make it so that autofocus can account for the camera tap? other than holding the button for a longer time? Any hacks?
Also holding the capture button longer doesn't always give clear shots

Tap the screen where you want to focus then take the pic
So in a situation where I am moving (ie. on a plane, in a car, bus, train) this camera is useless because the phone will not take good pix? I'm sorry if I sound like a brat or anything but a camera is important on a phone as that is my only camera. Maybe a rom can fix this or a hacked version of the camera?

I always enable anti shake and it seems to work pretty good... maybe you have a faulty unit however i doubt that i never heard of it before but as i said maybe...

Maybe I'll give it a little time to settle, I just did a factory reset and notice a little lag as well. I did transfer a lot of sms from my old phone using sms backup pro so maybe thats causing it? But hopefully a little time will fix if not then I will try factory resetting without restoring messages.

Filmed with Galaxy S3. The camera is not useless.

I'm also disappointed with the camera and don't think you're being a "brat" for expecting more from this phone. Seems like the optics might be poor quality...or maybe the CCD itself. Dunno. But hopefully I'm wrong and dev's can improve the camera's performance by modifying the software at some point. The "premium upgrade" that's due soon and already out for others is supposed to fix the cam's poor low-light capabilities(among other added features), so Samsung has already admitted there are real issues with the cam. If we're lucky the upgrade will fix the other cam related stuff too.
That said, there'll be plenty of people out there willing to argue their T999's take fine pictures...Wait, there's one now! Haha... But unless our particular phones are an exception to the rule, this cam pretty clearly(pun intended) has issues. I certainly wouldn't characterize the cam as "useless" though. In fact, I actually like the video it captures better than it's still photos. All focus, shake and grainyness issues aside, as long as you're prepared to do a little post-shot processing on still photos, the cam takes 'acceptable' quality pics, IMHO.
Of course it's possible we do have bad devices. In fact, I've had multiple issues with this S3(including something like the "lag" you mentioned, interestingly enough) and will have a replacement by early next week because of those issues. I'll let you know if my new phone takes better quality photos.
Hey just to update, my camera seems to have gotten better. I messed around with it and even turned off anti-shake and turned it back on. Maybe it was just me not being able to handle the bigger phone (not as comfortable to hold, well at least without practice). But Anvil Vapor try turning off anti-shake and turning it back on. Also mess around with the hdr mode and let box turn green on its own. Pictures are much better now.
Thanks everyone.

Glad to hear you're getting better results! Got my replacement S3 last Friday and have been comparing shots taken with the old and new cams. The replacement fixed every issue I was having with the phone, and it now performs more like I was expecting it to. But for me, holding and then releasing the shutter button to take the shot still captures less blurry pics than when letting it autofocus and tapping the shutter button. I do notice, though, that with the new camera HDR mode results in much less blurry pics than it used to(and maybe even less blurry than single-shot with anti-shake ON/OFF, now). So maybe the camera was bad in my old phone, or it had something to do with it's faulty mainboard. Dunno...
But for an 8MP phone camera, it's ok. And close up, macro pics look quite nice! :good:

Camera Shutter Lag

According to the review here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qXpVCCz_TjQ
The focusing is really fast, however, there's lag time after the shutter is pressed, the reviewer commented that this is the same with any existing Sony Xperias.
That's slightly disappointing, what's the point of having fast focus but without fast capture?

I just checked out M5 auto-focus and shutter speed. it's true that the lag exist. I hope Sony rectify this asap as i see potential in this device, but too bad it is a mid-ranger and they just announce the Xperia Z5. Hope that there will be more developer interested in this device.

Same problem for the Xperia Z5c, and so far not solved by Sony. It is very annoying and something "special" which I have never seen in any onther brand phone!
Anyone with focus problems?
Reading the posts on m5 camera it seems to me that focus in general is not a problem. In my m5 the focus seems to be lazy, I mean, if I take a photo and then a second one that needs a different focus (a far object after a close object or vice versa), often the second picture is out of focus. Roughly half of the times everything works fine. This also happens taking the first picture if the camera is switched on not pointing to the object. If I change from manual to superior auto or vice versa focus is correctly adjusted for the first picture; the problem seems to be more frequent if tracking of objects is switched on (I never used smile triggering). Some better behaviour (but this doesn't happen alwais) is obtained forcing focusing by tapping on the object to be focused.
If flash is used the problem is mitigated. I experienced this problem on two different phones (I sent back the first one, when I received the second I didn't notice any significant difference). Anyone else with a similar problem? Phones are recent, I don't have experience with Lollipop, so I don't know if this is Marshmallow related. I already deleted data of the app and repaired software with companion. It seems to me a software problem, since half of the times I can obtain perfectly focused photos at any distance.
You may try Snap Camera app, and see the diference. With that app the camera focus works super fast, with stock app is often blury. Now I use only Snap...

Back Camera is taking blurred pictures

hey guys !
My friend just bought an m5 a couple of weeks ago and he's experiencing a strange thing with the camera. The front camera is working just fine ,but the back camera is taking blurred pictures. When he focuses on something everything is sharp and good right until pic is taken and processed, the results are blurry pictures . Sometimes the camera takes normal sharp pics but the majority of the times its blurred ones, so I'm asking you guys : is it a common thing among all m5 devices or am I missing something in the camera setting ? could it be a software problem or is it more likely to be a hardware defect ?
I'd really like to have your opinions on this as I was the one to convince him to get a Sony device instead of a Samsung even though I'm a note user myself. The device is not rooted , running the latest stock Android Lollipop 5.1 .
Thanks in advance !

I find that the rear camera cannot focus beyond about 10m.
To take the best possible shot focus on something about 1m away in full daylight, if still bad, then definitely a problem.

I am observing the same thing with my Xperia M5 Dual- OK with close up shots only.
Does everyone think this is normal? Or should I be worried that I'd miss capturing important moments?
Thanks in advance for your feedback.
I use Snap camera to avoid such things.
I had a similar problem. In my case the problem was that the hybrid autofocus did not work and only one of the two autofocus methods was working. The result was that roughly half of the times pictures were out of focus (randomly). I solved the problem sending the device to repair. They changed the camera and now everything is working fine. I think this is a quite common problem, since I read many posts reporting a similar problem. By the way: in my case using for instance camera fv5 resulted in good pictures all the time, since this software is capable of using only the working part of the hybrid autofocus. The problem was that focusing was very slow.
Can anyone confirm if the hybrid autofocus problem exists on M5 from 2016 (5.1 Lollipop or it happens just on 6.0.1)? If not sure about year, there is a sticker under SIM slot, use a needle or something similar to pull it. It should be 16WXX (XX is week the phone was manufactured).
Dear Developers, I experience the same main camera problem. The images are vague after 2 meters. I used fv5 app. But, still same quality. In fv5 app, the maximum resolution shows 3.1Mp(2048*1536). But, front cam shows good images and the back one very poor.*
What should I do..? I bought this new M5dual from Amazon yesterday.
