2.5D Display? - Moto Z Play Questions & Answers

Does the Moto Z Play has the 2.5D curved display?
I kind of think it does but I just wanted to make sure.

Yes, the display edges are very slightly curved (I'm always having trouble calling it 2.5D since it doesn't mean much, although it is comfortable to use). You notice it the most if you want to use an affordable tempered glass because it won't cover the entire screen.

Do glass screen protectors affect display quality like anti-glare ones ?

I used to have an anti-glare protector on GS3, it was terrible. It kinda "magnifies" the pixels that you can actually see a rainbow of red-green-blue colors especially on a white background. I got a huawei honor 5x and thinking of trying out a glass screen protector. Does it have the same effect or any other weird/annoying distortion in display quality ?
I personally don't use screen protectors after having one a few years ago. They attract fingerprints like a magnet. Modern screens have gotten far more resilient to scratches. I have never needed a case or a screen protector.

Tempered Glass Screen Protectors

Bought a tempered glass last night (link below, along with image), and it adhered perfectly, and looks amazing.
Moto G5 Plus Screen Protector, Yootech [2-Pack] Moto G5 Plus Tempered Glass Screen Protector [ANTI-SCRATCH] [BUBBLE-FREE][ULTRA-CLEAR] for Motorola Moto G plus 5th Generation https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06XMY75GX/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_o8g4ybG5GRYKJ
The speaker cutout at the top is wider than needed. Doesn't cover proximity sensor and looks asymmetric.
How did you put it by yourself without any air bubbles?
No matter what brand of tempered glass you buy for the G5, on Amazon or anywhere else, they all have the same size top cutout. The proximity sensor is not going to get damaged with how thin the opening is.
As for the bubbles, if you follow the directions included with any of the tempered glass these days, you should never have bubbles, otherwise, you did it wrong. Very easy to install without any bubbles.
Not necessarily. A badly made tempered glass brand will have sub par results, even with a perfect install. I'm coming from a phone with a slightly curved edge, where it was trial and error to find a good one. Thank goodness the Moto G5 plus has a flat screen <3.
I've used some "tempered glass" screen protectors that were good, but the most recent one I got for my Oneplus One seemed like really cheap glass that chips much easier (even just from hitting other stuff in my pocket like keys).
Now I've got a Moto G5 Plus on the way and I want to find out which of these dozen different brands of "9H Hardness" screen protectors are the best quality/durable - and, if the once that claim "oleophobic anti-fingerprint coating" actually work well?
I'm guessing some of the protectors actually have a good coating and some just said "let's write that so they sell better" even if they don't.
Has anyone used the fingerprint sensor one-button nav with a tempered glass screen protector on? Does it interfere in any way or make it more difficult to register proper swipes?

I got this one: http://a.co/4TGZKPS
I've had no problem with the finger print scanner or one button navigation. I even found one button nav easier since the home button is more recessed.
It went on perfectly with no bubbles and seems to have a good oleophobic coating.

I picked up the same tempered glass off your recommendation. It looks great and was easy to install. Thanks for sharing. I looked at a few others and think the Yootech was a smart choice.
Picked up the op's protector as well. It's a little annoying that the holes don't perfectly line up, but it went on without a hitch and works well.
Is this good?
I ordered it (Cash on Delivery so I can always cancel)

I picked up a 3 pack by Mr. Shield. The only complaint I have is the glass doesn't quite extend all the way to the edges, I don't mind the oversized speaker and camera cutout's
Nuglass screen protectors are available for Moto G5 Plus. I have found them to have an excellent fit and are resistant to finger prints.

Use the bathroom method... Turn on hot water in shower for about 3 to 5 min to get it steamy in there. Turn off water and let the steam settle the dust out of the air. Then apply the protector.

I'm not sure if you're aware, but 9H hardness only refers to scratch hardness and doesn't mean it will be chip or crack resistance.
I have gone through 3 different brand "tempered glass" protectors from ebay and not one has fit properly or stayed on. Even those that said 2.5d... I used to have a galaxy alpha and the first 3$ TG protector I bought from ebay worked flawlessly... Is it because it's still a fairly new phone?
I just wish the protectors fit the speaker better. Everyone single one on Amazon seems to fit slightly off
You should definitely go for Orzly Tempered Glass. I've used this brand's glass on my moto G2 and the protection was perfect. It was not too thick, so I was able to use a TPU case and have the glass installed as well.

If you're talking about the cutout for it being a little wider on the left, that is for a sensor. If you hold the phone up to the light, you can see the sensor there.

Okay now I see it. It just seems like wasted space because the sensor blends in really well.

DO NOT install tempered glass protector on your zenfone 3.

I just realized this.
I bought a cheap tempered glass online only to found out that it was 1mm smaller than the display. This would be really awkward to have two lines (of that glass) on your display when the screen turned on. I complained to the seller about it but he didn't reply to me yet.
Then I bought a new one which perfectly fit the size of the display. I know it won't be full size because of the phone glass curvature. After installing it, the all 4 sides of the glass edge didn't stick. Although it wasn't very visible when the screen turned on, but I worry that some dust will get in there.
Now I know that the curve of the phone glass starts at 2mm inside of the display. So getting a glass protector smaller than the screen size will give you an annoying vertical physical lines, getting a glass that fit the display will give you a halo effect because the edge didn't stick.
I do have a standard plastic screen protector, but I haven't use that yet. I hope that one doesn't give me nightmares.
Use 2.5d tempered glass.

Question about screen protector and squeeze feature?

So here is my question. I’m looking at the invisible sheild glass screen protector but am wondering, what will happen with the protector when I squeeze my pixel for assistant? Will I lift or crack? What do you guys think?
I seriously doubt they will be sending the glass screen. Should be fine.
What do you mean sending the glass screen? I’m buying a glass screen protector. The pixel 2XL is Poled made of plastic so you can squeeze. So I’m wondering about the glass protector
Have you checked the Accessories thread here
That doesn’t answer my question. Hence why I asked it. That’s basically just listing what accessories are available
That's actually a good question- I hadn't really thought about it. Hopefully there won't be any issue with the screen protectors. I guess we'll find out soon enough.
Maybe a good place to ask...

Exactly! That’s my point! I don’t want to spend 50+ dollars then that crap pops off

Huh?
You are squeezing the sides of the phone and not actually compacting the screen, so there should be no issue.

Understood but is that not why google went POLED so as not to have glass to deal with the pressure
Zagg is saying we should be fine and the warranty for return is 30 days from website kiosks depends on them
Yet Google made the screen of plastic not glass?

the only way to really know is to wait for someone to test it
BUT
this is the first time i heard that screen is plastic
what i know that it is gorilla glass 5 from their website and from other websites
https://www.gsmarena.com/google_pixel_2_xl-8720.php
(DISPLAY Type P-OLED capacitive touchscreen, 16M colors
Size 6.0 inches, 92.6 cm2 (~76.4% screen-to-body ratio)
Resolution 1440 x 2880 pixels, 18:9 ratio (~538 ppi density)
Multitouch Yes
Protection Corning Gorilla Glass 5
- Always-on display
- 100% DCI-P3 coverage)
It’s POLED the P = plastic
http://www.androidauthority.com/poled-vs-amoled-792869/amp/
i know that the inside where made of plastic
but the touchscreen in the outside are made of glass (the digitizer)
so glass on top of a plastic (they get thinner panel this way )
OH right the HTC U11 have lcd glass screen in the first place
maybe you can ask in there form if anyone have a problem in the squeeze with glass and screen protector
Someone will surely correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think you actually squeeze the body of the phone, meaning, the sides don't actually compress. What you're doing by squeezing the phone is really squeezing your fingertips (and the base of your palm area), so that your skin makes contact with more of the extreme edges of the screen. It's very slight, but enough to activate the sensitive touch areas there. When the phone sees a whole bunch of "touch" along the sides of the screen, it sees that as a squeeze. So, you don't have to worry about a case cracking under the pressure. However, if this really is how it works, then any case with screen-overlap may interfere with activation of squeeze command. Ditto with screen protectors.
As for the P in P-OLED. That refers to the substrate, which is the base to which all of the electronic bits are connected. Plastic allows this substrate to be thinner and more flexible. The outer surface may be, and often is, still made of glass (in this case, Gorilla Glass 5). P-OLED isn't typically used to make the body of the phone more damage resistant (although it certainly can be). It's used to make the screen a tiny bit lighter and thinner, allowing more room for other internal pieces (such as a slightly larger battery).

Sorry I have to correct you here. The squeeze gesture is picked up by 2 rows of sensors inside the edges of the frame. It has nothing to do with the screen.
Jerryrigeverything did a teardown on the HTC u11 which uses the same tech. So, that section of the frame edge is actually mobile to a degree. It also compromised rigidity and failed his bend test.
Why do you need a screen protector? I have not made a scratch a phone screen since prior to my nexus 4. The screen are pretty much scratch proof unless you use sand paper to do it.

Question Screen protector

What screen protector do you use? Does it have impact on screen sensitivity? Is it a better option to buy Hardglass or foil or maybe hybrid?
Do phones with newest screen like Victus needs aditional screen protector?

Why?
Useless... the original screens are hard enough.
I use one from aliexpress. €4 for 3 pieces. Only important to have rounded edges. Hydrogel was not clear and do not feel nice under finger.
I use one from Lito. It's a full glue, glass screen protector. It's sturdy, I didn't manage to break it yet. I like the fact that it is easier to wipe the screen with a screen protector. Also, I sometimes forget I have keys in my jacket pocket and I don't want any micro-scrathes on the display, just in case I sell it down the line. Even if the screen is Victus, I saw that they are still prone to scratches. I believe JerryRigEverything had a video about it on youtube.
P.S.: no sensitivity issues on it. Fingerprint also works just as well.
I use hydrogel polyurethane film.Excellent protection against damage. The fingerprint works great, rather than glass.
