F2fs as said in post provides more speed but I don't find this to be the case and for getting f2fs on 9 a factory reset will do

@DiMatador

If F2FS is need it, how to format the phone?
Do all portions must be formatted?
Only big apps like asphalt you will feel the difference. If not used you won't notice any difference. Only /data partition must be formatted.

Backup all your data
then do a factory reset from settings (it'll wipe your internal storage so backup)
you will get /data as f2fs.
restore your data.

Backing up internal storage before doing wipe?

I fell behind on the CM nightlies and stable builds so I'm looking to backup all my internal memory (pics videos apps) so I can do a full wipe and start fresh with no issues. Any recommendations on what to do? The gs3 internal memory isn't the easiest to work with. Thanks

Copy to computer. If no computer, copy to extsd.
Use one of the many wireless transfer apps in the store. Makes it very easy to do.

Please do know
Interanal SD = /data/Media
Data Partition wipe in Recovery = /data/data being wiped.
So what you have on internal SD will be safe as all recoveries don't include /data/media when wiping. They have additional option to wipe internal sd. You don't need that.

Stock recovery wipes internal sdcard because it formats /data. It's by design as a true factory reset should reset the phone to a clean, out of box state. Now, why they didn't make it an option, I don't know!

How to decrypt?

Hey guys,
I got a rooted stock ROM with TWRP. When I go to TWRP I don't see any option to decrypt?
So how can I actually do it? Will I lose any data while decrypting?
Thanks in advance!

Simply format the data partition. (once you have to type: "YES", than you are at the right menu option)
It will delete ALL personal files (photos etc..)
Once you've done, you can go to the System settings to verify it.

Confirmed formatting the data partition disables encryption as well as any saved file so back up to pc or cloud if you have pictures movies docs you can't live without

Actually, you must be rooted, you must then flash a kernel that does not force encryption (or no force encryption zip), Then you format data. Yes, you will then loose your data. Follow the link, it's laid out pretty clearly for the N6 but the procedure for any Nexus is the same. There are a few other ways to do it but for the basics follow the link.

correct, however the OP already has a rooted device with TWRP. You can have root rights on 5x if you have installed a modified boot image. Therefore he/she has to format the data partition only.

It will not work, for advanced security reasons the encrypted device is the standard on Marshmallow.
If you want to decrypt your phone and would like to get a bit snappier device, than the only way is the rooted device. You do not have to install a custom Rom, just unlock the bootloader, install a modified kernel and format the Data partition.

This has nothing to do with root. The only prerequisite is a kernel with forced encryption disabled and formatting data after flashing such kernel.
You don't need to be rooted to run unencrypted.
I'm on ElementalX kernel.
If I backup the data partition, then format it to disable encryption, and then restore data, will it work?

A BIG THANK YOU @acsontos
This imho is the most valuable information for a newcomer, so this post should be a sticky. Once you know it, you think everybody knows it. I was at my wits end trying decrypt questioning my move to N5X from N5, till I found this post. Many misleading posts around that make you go around in circles. Thanks again man!
So not need to flash kernel? Just root and clear the partiton?

Only format data. Internal SD Card gets automatically formatted. Take your backups.

[Nougat Beta] How to format data without losing storage files in an encrypted phone

How to format data without losing storage files in an encrypted phone using TWRP Recovery?
Do you realize that "formatting" and "not losing" are the exact opposite things?
You can't format without losing data, you can only backup stuff to some other location (PC, USB ...) and then restore it after formatting.

You can't format /data and /sdcard separately in an encrypted phone since nougat. Data contains apps and account info, sdcard contains stored pics, music etc... Storage and data folders are separate. Again... Read the question ??? cheers

Your question should be "how to wipe data"
Formatting will always result in complete data loss

5x Version 8.0.0 System Storage 13gb. is this even normal?

Hello there. I own a nexus 5x 32gb and i noticed that the system storage is huge. Is that normal for the device? I got the 32gb version to have space for videos and movies but seems like im running out of space instantly. Any help appreciated.
No, it's not normal. You're probably doing something wrong. Try format /sdcard from your recovery. See if that fixes it

You most likely will have to do a factory reset. Do it from the stock recovery. This obviously will wipe your device so backup first. Your issue is not that uncommon.

If i factory reset through stock recovery i will lose everything? Isnt most of the internal space consideted "SD CARD" ?
Yes it will wipe your device so backup everything you want to keep before you reset.
FYI, had this same issue on my 32 GB 5x awhile back.

K will do.
I'll report back with my results
11gb on system after factory reset/wipe from stock recovery.
It was 4.5gb at some point. Don't know why it's back up at 11 now....

The storage shown in settings is the storage used. Not the total. It includes the system files used for android. If you use a root file manager like Root Explorer and look at sdcard, that shows the storage available to you. It's the 32Gb less the system files and is about 25Gb.

Neither of those have anything to do with any apps. If your using official TWRP then you can keep your /data partition encrypted. To remove encryption you will format which also erases everything in /data and internal SD. What your referring to changes the fstab to allow the choice to be encrypted, and was only necessary before TWRP was able to decrypt.

Hello Skywalker! Can you tell me how I would go about disabling forced encryption for good?(at least until I choose to turn back on). I don't want my device to be encrypted whatsoever, so after I wipe data and flash lineage/stock, what else should I do to prevent the device from encrypting? Thanks!
