Question, I want to get rid of the Google search bar, looks like the Pixel launcher is the key.
I have found a couple apk files to install the pixel launcher on my 5x, BUT I want to know if:
1) my phone needs to be rooted
2) will installation of the pixel launcher on a 5x affect functionality of any other apps or the UI itself
3) is there another way to get rid of the search bar without having to do this?
Google search bar is a built-in function of the default Google Now Launcher. Changing launcher with another one which doesn't have the bar is the easiest way to remove it. Of course your phone doesn't need to be rooted, you can install the launcher apk just like every other apk. The installation of a different launcher affects just the home screen, it's a stand-alone app and you can remove it whenever you want.
ok great thanks.
I thought I had read that installing the pixel launcher will cause my Google feed/now to not work. and I use it alot to read articles/see my traffic/etc

Google feed is also part of the Google Now Launcher, but I think it's present in the Pixel launcher too. Just give it a try
probably stupid question, but do I need to uninstall google now launcher to install the pixel launcher?
It is present, but only In flashed version (Root needed) - apparently it has to be System app.
On the plus side - if you flash it, Google sees your Nexus as Pixel so you have unlimited storage In Google photos
(Edit: you can have Google now feed even In Pixel launcher from apk, just not when you swipe right - it is available through long press of home button)

Nope. After having installed another launcher when you'll press the home button the system will ask what launcher to use as default.
Don't worry about installing it, it's not a critical thing. It's just a normal application

Great! I was wondering if it was possible. Do you necessarily have to use the pixel launcher or do other methods exist?
Nova launcher can be customized to have the features of pixel launcher...

I installed it and played with the pixel launcher, but without installing it as a systems app, I dont see the benefit, and I dont want to root the phone or start hacking away given that this is my "daily driver" phone

Nova is great at having the pixel launcher look, and even better. No Google cards on left swipe though. And no weather as well.

You can add the weather! I read how to in the comments of this article on Android Police earlier. Open Nova then long press the Volume Down Button to enable the "Labs" settings. Modify the remaining settings in Nova/Desktop.

I'll need to check out that Nova, I do rely on Google Now Launcher for weather, traffic, and news alot, so messing with that isnt appealing, BUT if I can make the Nova look like Pixel and work like the current Now launcher, I am all in.

mind blown
What I dont understand is why Google keeps the search bar in Portrait mode, but switches to the small circular buttons for both google search and voice in Landscape
To me the small buttons in landscape are a very nice design and is better than the pixel.
Oh well.....

Hey, gang. I did several searched through the site but didn't find a solution. Let me toss this out there. I'm looking for an app with a particular function. What I want to do is "freeze" the locations of the icons/widgets on the screens. Something that will allow their use, but not their moving or deletion.
Here's the deal. My daughter loves my N7, and uses it for her ECSE and speech therapy classes with specific apps to facilitate her development. (She's ASD.) She's really good about the length of time she's on the tablet, and has never gone off and gotten into any trouble with it. The problem is that several of her apps have a "drag and drop on the red X" function to close particular segments or sections within the apps. They're similar enough to the "drag and drop onto the red X" function in the Droid UI that she gets confused, deletes the icons for the apps themselves, and then can't find them the next time she wants to use them.
While I can set up a second user with her name and the same development apps that she uses, it still won't stop her from losing icons from time to time.
I've looked into a number of parental control apps, and while they clamp things down, I haven't found one that locks or "freezes" the positions of the icons.
Does something like this even exist? Trolling through Google Play hasn't found anything specific. Device is stock 4.2.2, unlocked and rooted, if that makes any different in recommendations. Thanks, all. :fingers-crossed:
Have you tried something like Apex Launcher? You could set up the layout and then use the Lock Desktop option to prevent any changes to the home screens.

With SS Launcher you can move any icon to any position on the screen (no grid), rotate to any angle, resize and recolor, pretty much unlimited. Many examples in this thread. My Home (notice Flipboard and FUEL at an angle; also notice that Wifi Manager widget is "behind" Widgetsoid widgets at bottom so all are active):
Sorry to not get back sooner, got mired in a 65 hour week.
Cue forehead-slapping "doh!" image. I got my head fixated on an app, and completely forgot about alternate launchers. Brilliant suggestion, guys, many thanks. Can you run the lock functions over a stock layout? ASD kids do well with routine and familiarity, and it would help that she not have to relearn new of screen layouts. OTOH, I can always replicate the layout that I already have, too.
Thanks again, gang, the advice and recommendations are appreciated.
I know nova aill let you import the layout from other launchers not sure if apex does it too or not. But worth checking.

This the best Launcher I have ever used, fully customizable and looks just like KitKat works on 4.3 and 4.4.2 aswell.
What I like about it is that you can hide apps in the app drawer, like hide stuff or bloatware you don't use and also rename and change the icon of any app. Also works with transparent status bar and navigation buttons.

Always rated Nova as number 1.
I've honestly tried almost every other launcher out there, including Aviante. I keep coming back to Nova Launcher. The stock launcher has improved some, but there are still a few things I miss from Nova. The first thing is the pop-up when you long hold on a app icon. That pop-up has "Uninstall" right there, so I don't need to view the App Info just to uninstall it. I can also remove the icon without having to drag it to the top of the screen. Second thing is that other settings such as Wallpaper is within a long-hold + tap's reach. I can also add multiple app icons to the desktop whereas I can't with the default launcher.
I know some of you are against changing the stock/vanilla android look, but for those who have tried any launchers that have been ported from other devices like Samsung, LG, Sony...
Wich launcher (share links if possible) have worked on your device?

It looks ok, but the icons are way too small and the weather widget size (4x2) is smaller than home grid size (5x5) so it does not center.

The TouchWiz launcher from the S4 also works. The launcher will be very small, but it can be enlarged using X posed Framework + App settings.

Absolutely! Here's what I did. These steps are for those who don't know about Xposed Framework as well.
1. Make sure that Xposed is installed (the framework, not just the apk), download App settings module from the Downloads section within the app. Go back to the modules section, and activate the checkbox for App Settings.
2. Reboot. (It is recommended that you reboot for the framework to be installed for the changes to take effect. While this is true, I reboot after my modules are downloaded/activated. If not, they would require a second reboot as well.)
3. Navigate to "TouchWiz home" in App Settings. Switch it from Off to On, and change the DPI value to a resolution that you find suitable, and hit save. I use 460 for this launcher, and various values for different apps that I find is a waste of screen real estate (like 280 for the Play Store, and most of the Google Apps).

In case anyone else is having this issue, I had weather cards turned off in Google now. Enabled it, and the weather came up. Guess same goes if you'd rather have the clock, disable weather updates.
Maybe I'm being stupid, but I have a pixel xl,and can see in settings my default launcher is pixel launcher, but cannot find it in app store to see if there's an update and it doesn't show on app store under apps I have installed list.
And cannot see weather like the others couldn't in this thread before updating
I went to play store and searched "pixel launcher". A few of my Google apps were not showing under updates, but I found them and updated them by searching "google" in the store.
I can't get weather to show up on the home screen either. Just clock.
Edit: looks like I had weather cards turned off too. Turned them on, still no weather. Maybe it will show up later though.

This was a common issue with a lot of the Moto apps as well. You had to manually search for them in order to get updates (Moto Display, Moto, etc). I have no idea why but it can be kind of confusing.
[edit] Just tried manual searching again. Contacts, Wallpapers, Calculator, and Phone all had updates that wouldn't show. This is lame.
Funny enough I came across that post and I was driving myself crazy trying to find how to enable that.
Just search pixel launcher in the play store and update the app.. I did that and it worked just fine like all the reviews I had been seeing

Is this a region thing something for Americans only ?
Found searching for the Pixel Launcher I can install it.
Installed it but I see no Pixel Launcher in my application tray.
I assume Pixel Launcher is running, after a few hours I did get the weather on my home screen.
It seems a little mickey mouse like for a Google product but I searched google on play store and found several things like pixel launcher and wallpapers that by themselves didn't show up needing an update but doing that they did. After a minute or two my pixel weather started working. P.S. I tried and contacted google and no response.

Search Pixel Launcher in the Play Store from a PC. It'll show up and you can install it to your Pixel.
I am in Canada and it says Pixel Launcher is not available in my country when I open the play store on my phone. Did it the PC route and it is working perfectly.

Got my Pixel today. Was going nuts looking for an option all over the place to get weather instead of time. For me weather cards and notifications were already enabled so all I did was update Pixel Launcher via the store and then refresh Google Now (or whatever it's called now) by pulling down at the top of the feed. Thanks guys!
Upgraded to O yesterday via full OTA w/ adb sideload. No issues so far except poor animation performance (low fps, extended animation time, etc.) when opening folders in the Pixel Launcher. Anyone else experiencing this? Have not tried a factory reset.

I've confirmed that my pixel launcher is also OMR1-4113793. My wife's Pixel (non-XL) is not experiencing this performance issue. Hers was updated to Android O via OTA.
So, neither factory resetting nor safe mode has affected this issue. I called Google support and they offered to replace the phone. I don't want to do that because this is clearly a software issue. It's just so strange that there aren't more reports for this. OTOH, I do seem to be a magnet for obscure bugs.
Sent from my Pixel XL using Tapatalk
Switched to Nova launcher and managed to configure it to be ~95% a clone of Pixel launcher. The performance issue is gone. So, this is definitely a pixel launcher issue and it's unclear how much, if any, Oreo has to do with this.
Sent from my Pixel XL using Tapatalk
Replaced the Pixel XL under warranty from Google and per their recommendation. The issue remains. So now we can say with 100% certainty that this is a software issue. Nova launcher is still very fast. Pixel launcher is painfully slow. Even just dragging an icon around the desktop is laggy. I have tried resetting the app data for Pixel launcher and that didn't help either. Hopefully Google will fix this in the next Pixel launcher update ... if we ever get one.

I have used Nova Launcher for years and don't even bother trying the stock launcher on new phones. Sorry for the OT, but I have a warranty replacement on the way. The notification says it will be refurbished, was yours?
Yes, the past few have been refurbished but my meticulous eye can't spot any signs of refurbishing ... Maybe the slightest sign of scuffing on the back bottom by the antenna line? Hard to say. It's effectively good as new.
Regarding Nova, I'm using it now. Had been using it for years until my Nexus / Pixel phones when i went stock launcher. I've got it configured to be almost identical to the Pixel launcher. Happy with it, but I still want the Pixel launcher issue fixed. There's a very real performance issue there that needs to be resolved.

Have you tried in developer options move all 3 animations to 0 or off? I do it on all my devices to make them feel snappier. Also, in Nova settings>look and feel> scroll speed and animation speed set to faster than light?

Unfortunately, that would only mask the problem. My personal preference is for the stock animation speeds. That's how I have Nova configured as well.

Already running it
I'll be patiently waiting for an update to the Pixel launcher. In the meantime it has to be Nova

Look above two posts. Tried it. Also, in the video I am using the Pixel 2 launcher. So strange that no one else is seeing this issue.

Resolved.
The issue was present on my brand new Pixel 2 XL as well so it was obviously a software issue. However, starting with 8.1 DP1 the issue was resolved. Went back to 8.0 and the problem returned. Now I just updated to 8.1 DP2 and the issue is resolved again. So, there it is. After all this time folks; Google fixed it on the 8.1 branch. I'm sure the same applies to 8.1 for the OG Pixel XL. Better late than never, but, damn, this one drove me nuts.

Friend's new Pixel 1, same issue
She just unboxed a used Pixel, did an iPhone restore, did all Android updates, and she's got a janky Pixel Launcher. She's on Android 8.1 with March Security updates. All apps updated. Her phone will also pause for 5 seconds at a time, then unfreeze. Reboot fixes that for a while. But the home screen lag is constant. She's coming from an iPhone and this is her first impression. Oh well... Any advice??!!!
