Bootloader locks after reboot, how to get rma? - Nexus 5X Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys. Yesterday my Nexus 5X came back from rma with his main board changed.
Now, when I do fastboot oem unlock, bootloader locks itself after a reboot. There are plenty of topics about that, for example http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-5x/help/unlock-bootloader-n5x-t3290923?nocache=1 has exactly the same problem.
I tried flashing the tot file (http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-5x/help/req-help-to-unbrick-t3251740) to see if it was a partition corruption problem, but nothing changed. It is definitely an hardware problem of NAND, as I found in other topics.
Rma won't accept my Nexus if I tell them that the problem is related to bootloader unlocking, and I don't want to keep a damaged device. So, is there a way to demonstrate that NAND is defective? Or at least something I can try to let them repair it?

TOT file does not rewrite every partition.
I dont personally think it is a hardware problem.
Dirty cow exploit to get root, flash TWRP via flashfire from the rooted OS and restore the required partition (whichever of them is related to the unlocking + if you are able to find a image of the partition) via the terminal with the dd tool maybe?

I tried flsahing all the partitions of a factory image via fastboot, because the bootloader remains unlocked until I reboot. Isn't it the same thing?

LG lock bootloader when change main board via RMA. All NO RPMB (on fastboot screen) devices are after RMA.
I think your NAND is NOT defective. My device after RMA is the same

This was the second time they changed the main board. Also the first time I sent it for rma they changed the main board (withouth resolving the screen flickering problem) but I was able to unlock bootloader.

[Q] Some Rooting Questions About The Nexus 7 Flo

Hi,
Sorry for the silly questions. I just want to quickly check some things about the Nexus 7 Flo.
QUESTION 1: I'm constantly scared of bricking my device when rooting it. If I brick it when rooting, will ASUS repair it? If not, is there a tool I can use to unbrick?
QUESTION 2: If I use the All-In-One toolkit, how likely is a soft brick/hard brick? Can I un-everything (unroot + lock + install stock ROM + stock recovery) using the All-In-One toolkit if I need to?
QUESTION 3: If something happens with the hardware (e.g. port broken, screen cracked) and I am everything'ed (root + unlock + ROM installed + custom recovery), will ASUS repair it?
QUESTION 4: Can we get ParanoidAndroid 3+ for Nexus 7 Flo yet?
Thank you, and sorry for the noob questions!

As far as I know, you don't have to unlock the bootloader to root. If you do, and need a repair, see question 2.

I would say unlikely to soft brick, and very unlikely to hard brick. And yes, you should be able to undo everything with a toolkit / fastboot commands.

If the USB port breaks you might have a problem, since you need USB connection to issue fastboot commands, which are used to restore the device to locked, stock state. If the firmware is altered and/or the bootloader is unlocked, the warranty is void.

@ameinild, will ASUS still repair it for me (but for a fee), or will they refuse to repair it at all? I don't understand warranties

Honestly I have no idea. I'm not too sure about how vendor repairs work either.
But as long as you don't erase or corrupt your bootloader (which would be an amazingly stupid thing to do) or smash your USB port, you should be good.
@ameinild, I have another question: Will ASUS know my device has been previously rooted or unlocked? Is there a triangle or something? Thanks!

I'm pretty sure they can't know that in any way - I don't believe Nexus devices have a counter...

Not entirely true. Ordered mine from B&H, rooted, etc., and woke the next morning with a hard brick. Even restoring through fastboot did not work. So I wiped system, recovery, and boot, relocked the bootloader, and sent the device back for a refund. Just received the refund today without question. Simply told the customer service dude the device wouldn't boot when I received it. I know, a little dishonest, but I followed all instructions to a T, I believe it was a hardware issue anyway, though I only overclocked to 1800 or so.

But you still managed to relock your bootloader, meaning fastboot worked which is the important thing.

Did I brick my device? :(

I was on 8.1 with Flash Kernel installed using images...I wanted to get back to stock...so unchecked OEM Unlocking in Developer Options, went to bootloader and locked bootloader using fastoboot flashing lock..and now I am getting "Can't find valid operating system. The device will not start". I can't unlock the bootloader now as I unchecked OEM unlocking in Developer Options and can't flash factory images also as it says Flashing is not allowed in Lock State, Did I brick the device?
Update: I have returned my device to Google and they processed a replacement
i am just curious, how were planning on flashing a rom with locked bootloader?

Yea, I think you may have turned it into a fancy paperweight. Been there, done that. You should have waited to uncheck OEM unlocking until after you locked the bootloader, which wiped your phone. About the only thing I can suggest is to try and run Deuces script to see if you can rescue your device. Best of luck to you.

Sorry for your loss, but you indeed have a fancy paperweight.
However I wonder if there isnt the QCom USB mode or something like that that exist on older devices, where you can access the phone partitions at a lower level and then restore whatever partitions is broken.

since your phone is now essentially a brick, you can try just about anything without worry of bricking your phone.

You cannot flash full images, but you can still flash OTAs... download the full OTA instead, and install (sideload) it from the stock recovery. Be sure to select the SAME build number you were on to begin with- eg. If you were on 8.1, use the 8.1 OTA. There will be a mode there for "Apply update from ADB". You put the phone into "sideload mode" and then send the OTA to the phone via adb. This will work regardless whether you have usb debugging enabled or not. Follow the directions given on the included link.

I didn't. They are still paperweights sitting in a drawer!
I got the same message yesterday after doing... God knows what. I can't even remember what went wrong.
My first thought was to flash a factory image. But it didn't helped at first. Probably, because i was trying to flash another factory image and not the one that came as stock on my phone.
So if you don't remember, which image it was, try all of them Hopefully, you'll get your phone booted again.
My first reaction was, is this april fools day? Is this an xda style joke? unchecked oem unlock?

Call google and just tell them your device wont boot all of a sudden; they will probably ask you to factory restore in the recovery, say the phone wont get past the google image. They will RMA that boy for you. You totally bricked. For future reference if you unlock the bootloader, dont waste your time trying to lock it again. Should have just fastboot flashed a factory image in the bootloader and called it a day. Having a unlocked bootloader doesn't effect you in anyway negatively.

Why is this Google's problem? This guy is at fault. Google shouldn't have to pay for it.
This is part of the reason these phones are so expensive.

Well I never said it was the moral thing to do haha; but this guys best bet is to call Google and see if they will RMA it. They RMA'ed my Nexus 6p after the Android 7 twrp brick; and I told them my pone wouldn't boot anymore; they asked me to go to recovery and factory restore, I told them I couldn't boot into recovery and they RMA'ed it. It was my fault for the brick but they didn't care.

I told them I had an unlocked boot-loader and installed twrp. I had to send them back my old phone and they put a $500 hold on my account, once they received the device and determined the issue was real, they released the hold on my account. In that period of time they could have determined "Oh he bricked the device with twrp" lets charge him $500 for a new one, but they didn't. I mean whats wrong with calling Google and seeing if they will RMA it; sure the OP made a bad mistake but you have not because you ask not.

What's wrong with it? You're telling him to call Google and say that for some reason, all the sudden his device won't boot.
This is why I don't fault Verizon for selling bootloader locked phones.

No IMEI, IMEI SV, or Signal after flash rom stock

First of all, i started being a newbie, i just wanted to install magisk for cam2api, but i messed up: i combined for error 2 different system (mine that was ios9 and ios8). So i tried to read more and more threads and it just got worse. to make the story short: i had to get to test-point and restore the phone with Xiaomi Mi Flash tool & an original rom stock.
So now that i can go inside the Android System and use the phone, my sim card is just not working, i checked and my imei was 0 and my IMEI SV also 0.
I tried deleting modemst 1 and 2, i tried to reflash the phone with another stock images, updating the phone via android (normal way), i tried to restore my imei with the QPST Dual Imei (and it worked but the IMEI SV still in 0). nothing is working Please i need help i think my efs folder it's corrupted but i'm not shure.
Also i don't have any EFS backup or System backup, nothing.

I´m not sure what you mean by ios8 and ios9, maybe oreo and pie.
For the next time just so you know test point method is not recommended while you are not completely bricked (although is recommended out there without care), on a unlocked device most probably you won´t need it to solve this kind of issue, there are other resources to try previous to this stage.
I never had this kind of problem, you might try this https://zfirmware.com/how-to-repair-qualcomm-imei-via-qualcomm-write-imei-tool/

Try rewriting the IMEI's from the box (I hope you still have the box and paperwork since there is the original IMEI's) with the Qualcomm IMEI Tool. Reflash full stock rom.
The tool is here: https://androidmtk.com/download-qualcomm-smartphone-write-imei-tool
If everything fails and your knowledge is not helping you to find a solution and you are still under warranty and respect the warranty for physical aspect of the device (no scuffs, no damage, no aftermarket replaced parts that may damaged warranty voids inside the phone) you can flash it stock, lock bootloader and file a warranty replacement as "damage from OTA". The service will replace your motherboard.

I knew that there is a method to restore IMEIs via adb but I don´t remember commands so I never need it. First I do before tinkering device is to backup IMEI/EFS/NVram.
I had a theory that years ago I proved, IMEI is not really lost but just overlapped so if you have some friend that can give you their backup this will recover the yours but won´t overwrite/replace the yours. Not sure if it works yet.
About the tool that I linked maybe you need to get it through either in fastboot or download mode, try both; I don´t think that detect it while device is on.

Bricked or not bricked, that is the question

Weird screen behavior, it seem to me that it isn't a hardware fault, cause when plugging in a charger the phone is able to show the MI logo, but not the charging icon
The phone is able to boot and i can hear the phone locking and unlocking, can see that the screen is on because of the backlight, but there is no image, SO FRUSTRATING!!
If you have any idea of what's going on and can give me a tip, i would thank you so much, the phone has been on this state for a long time
Don't know how to upload videos, if you think that can help diagnose it i can upload it and share a link or something

I hadnt updated my Rom, Pixel experience, in a while, so i took the opportunity and flashed an (at the time) beta Pixel Experience Android 10, i reverted and everything was fine for about one day i think, then some artifacting wich would come and go until the display gived up completly (about an hour between the two)
Yes, it is unlocked, and when in fastboot/recovery the screen is lighted up but not showing anything
My guess is that i have a low level firmware issue, as i had problem with those before (was running a custom ROM from day 1, so i had to manually update firware to use newer versions of PE (still pie version) and almost bricked my device

Then try the next:
- Flash a different vendor.
- Flash a different kernel.
- Revert to stock ROM, no need to lock or nothing, just flash first the recovery ROM but if it doesn't result then flash the fastboot ROM through EDL, so that you know you can boot to EDL mode without need to open the back cover, this will restore all the original images.

if your bootloader is locked, you can't flash through fastboot mode either vendor or stock ROM, you should need to use EDL method or you can re-unlock bootloader and this way will work. Anyway i don't understand what actually your issue is.

The issue is the display not working, and it's gotta be a firmware issue as it's on my desk right now showing a bunny, also i am not used to fastboot flash anything, i just was used to recoveries and what not
Just runned some code and it's locked, this is getting better and better oh boy
How am i gonna unlock this if i can't even unlock the phone? last time with screen working it was already a nightmare, having to wait for miui account, do i have any method of doing this without using EDL?

Well, this make sense although it's not clear if you did unlock it previously and after that at some time you did lock it again.
If you didn't unlock it previously you would need to bind your Mi account to the device and enable USB debugging and OEM unlock options but if you didn't before without a screen working you have a more difficult way, confirm me if that is the case.
Anyway I got happily surprised when I bought this device some months ago at the first attempt I could unlock it without have to wait time, try it and see what happen.

It was unloked and i locked again, don't know if this helps my case or if i am royally screwed up
And yeah, Xioami does make difficult to do the process of unlocking but only to recently released devices, aparently to stop re-sellers to buy the cheaper chinese rom and put the global version on them, i think that when a device doenst get made anymore makes sense that they would make it more easy (i bought the device 2 weeks after launch)

Ok, of course this makes a huge difference, if you did unlock it previously then you couldn't receive any wait time, I wonder why you didn't try it if you didn 't. Check if MiUnlock tool unlock your device instantly.

Hmm, OK, now you have your way sorted out, you can try with a custom ROM (all of them contain a vendor) or in case a custom ROM doesn't solve it you have to try a stock ROM through Mi Flash tool.

Ok, but how am i gonna flash a rom with fastboot? Is that a thing?
Also, i don't think the vendor is gonna be my only problem, but also the firmware, is there a way to flash firmware without the recovery and trough fastboot?

You can't be sure of that, sometimes the vendor correct the issue, sometimes the firmware.
Firmware it is in the stock ROM that can be flashed either through fastboot or EDL mode (be careful to not relock bootloader or you couldn't enable this time OEM unlock option). Now that you have the way more clear just do a search "how to flash stock ROM on Xiaomi devices either through fastboot or EDL mode", just keep in mind that you don't need to open the back cover of the device, usually from a device off (only on unlocked ones) you could send it to EDL by pressing both volume buttons at same time that it is connected to PC, I gave you the main tips, for the rest you will find a lot of tutorials.

It’s now easy to bypass MediaTek’s SP Flash Tool authentication

What do you think? Will this finally let us unbrick redmi note 8 pro without mi authorized account?
Did some dev look into this yet?
yes i've tested it it works. i couldnt do anything with it though but it shouldnt be that hard to let us flash cfw and twrp or unlock the bootloader using spflashtool right. this thing is huge i mean granted its not the easiest to do but honestly its not even that hard if you know what you're doing which you should if you're on xda, it took about 10 mins on me
it is possible, we're just waiting for a dev to implement it, right now there isnt much you can do w sp flash tools

Why not? The scatter file is sitting there on /images folder in every fastboot rom distribution. Look for MT6785_Android_scatter.txt.
After that, your device should be a blank slate. The rest, is up to you.
Well, I think flashing vanilla rom should be your priority, since everything can be done when your device is up-and-running. And extra cautious of course.

Not a blank state, a blank slate. You know, a blank board which you can write or draw anything you like? But that's not important right now.
Theoritically it should safe. It's like removing a boulder that blocking your way.
If you have access to SPFT, theoritically you should be able to flash your vanilla ROM, given the security measures are null (or rather, bypassed). If your device is chinese based you should flash chinese ROM there. Do a wipe and lock procedure. Let the bootloader locked for now, since you can unlock it later. Do not do crossflash there, without bootloader unlock (this should be a common sense).
But theory is a theory. I can't test it since my device is up-and-running.
My knowledge may be obsolete, since the last device I flashed was MT6572 back on its glory days, no security measures and bootloader was unlocked back then. You can't flash only and only if your eMMC is damaged, which is the worst case (oppo phones was prone to eMMC failure back then, and that happened to me). But afaik the flash process isn't changed that much, just an additional security measure was added, so I think my knowledge still apply.
Additional note: try to flash without nvram and nvdata to avoid losing IMEI (someone from Redmi Note 9 forum lose his IMEI).

ooh thanks for the explanation, to be clear, my phone is working fine right now but i hate miui. so my intention was to unlock the bootloader if possible, or install cfw and twrp if its not, or if thats not possible either, just installing a custom rom (probably aosp a11)

Well, for unlocking bootloader there's no other method than the official one. But in some cases the waiting time could be forever (well, many failed attempts would lead to loong waiting time, practically doesn't worth the wait).
My device was resurrected (around May 20, when everyone make a fuss about the lockout). And it can do UBL and root just fine, and tripped AVB many times. It's pretty safe to say tripping AVB on device with unlocked bootloader is recoverable. Just do fastboot flash via MiFlash Pro, and you are set! But never do "Flash and Lock" operation. It would lead to the lockout. You would regret it.

Thanks for sharing your experience. This eMMC failure is because of Oppo or Mediatek? I have a Realme C12.
3 guys 'hard bricked' their devices. No sign of life. Flashing in SP Flash Tools results 'RAM_EXCEPTION (0xC0050005)'. Not able to readback too. It seems like eMMC replacement is only solution.
What are your ideas in this?
Thanks

Maybe because oppo tried to cut corners since they're using mediatek? I don't see any reason for them to not cut the corner any further. It was 2015, it have a mediocre specs with mediocre quality for their price.
It's been a long ago, I forgotten the error messages. I'm afraid you are facing a worst case scenario.
If you can pull out your eMMC and put that on a jtag reader, there's might be a slight chance of revival.
