Favorite Screen on/off method? - Nexus 5X Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I come from htc m9 where lock/unlock screen was pretty straightforward. double tap to unlock and navbar shortcut for screen off
here we have power key, ambient display, fingerprint, double tap (with EXkernel) for screen on
and navbar shortcut, fingerprint gestures, power key for screen off......
wow. so much choice...too bad that these methods override sometimes, like double tap is useless with ambient display, and fingerprint makes all of it no-sense....
How do you play with it?

Screen on: ambient display (only enabled for notifications) or fingerprint
Screen off: Nova launcher shortcut, power button sometimes

Screen on: power button
Screen off: double tap statusbar (anywhere)

Simple.
ON - fingerprint, power button
OFF - power button

wow there are people who still use power button hahaha

On: fingerprint or swipe up
Off: double tap

Same. Don't like active touchscreen for this function. I like to carry my phone by holding it front and back side. Also sometimes I press the edges accidentally when I do something else.

Your surprise (and apparent disdain?) toward people using the device as designed is confusing to me.
Did you honestly believe that *ALL* 5X owners would fear that the physical power button would break from normal usage?

Screen on: Fingerprint sensor
Screen off: Sweep2Sleep gesture. Available in various custom kernels

on: fingerprint or power button
off: greenfy hibernate widget button

Screen on: fingerprint or double tap to wake in EXKM
Screen off: double tap on navbar

On: fingerprint
Off: power button (it's there, it works and i don't have to have a special feature to use it)

Screen on, swipe up
Screen off, tap invisible power button in far upper right hand side of status bar. Tap closes screen, long press brings up the power button menu.
If on stock 7.1.1, flash this to get it. Full systemui tuner included (Navbar adjustment and brightness bar removal)

well, we can live without buttons now, since they have a lifespan touch/accelerometer methods should be preferred by anyone who cares about his phone...
I don't use any since 2011, once you get used to alternative methods...you can't go back

I owned Galaxy S1, Galaxy S2, Nexus 4, Nexus 5, OPO1 (supports DT2W), and now N5X.
I have never experienced a faulty power button.

Is there a way to wake screen with other buttons?

As a former HTC Hero user i really miss the option to wake the screen using the bottom hardware buttons.
On the Desire you have to use the power button, but i hate the placement of that button.
Is there a way to use the "menu" or any other bottom hardware button to wake the screen?
BUT i still want to have the lockscreen, so the app which is mentioned in the tricks section on this board isn't cutting it for me since it will deactivate the lockscreen in order to let you use other hardware buttons to wake the screen.
Any other solutions? Isn't there some kind of "hardware button mapper" available like on windows mobile devices?
Just got my Desire today, so I am actually curious about this also.

Yes, but only possible on rooted handsets, no?
Probably :/
damn, don't want to root my desire as i have heard of random bricks.
another question:
is there an app to lock the screen using a widget?
so after i'm done with the current action, i don't want to use the power button to lock the screen, but a widget or a shortcut.
Is there a widget available for that? Or even better a widget to turn of the screen?
I have Lockbot Pro installed and I can wake the screen with any of the buttons at the bottom. Pressing Menu then gives me an 'unlock' bar on the screen which I can press to unlock (or I can swipe the screen in the standard way). Allows you to unlock without pressing the power button at all.
thanks for the hint. the app looks quite nice, but it seems to be very slow.
When waking the screen it takes very long until the lockscreen is shown, and it always shows a different lockscreen?!
also is the an option in the pro version to define a key to lock the screen?
So i.e. i wake the screen using the center navigation pad button, can i define that pressig the button again should turn the screen off again?

Touch Screen to Wake?

Is it possible to either:
1) Touch or Swipe the screen to wake, or
2) Have the screen ON all the time but dimmed to 0 (like a screen saver) that then goes to normal brightness on a touch
Eg - I want to be able to wake the N7 without pressing the power button as I'm mounting them as part of a home media system and it is fiddley to get the to the power button.
Thanks
Nathan

ElementalX kernel have sweep2wake and doubletap2wake features.
Optionally you can use the gyroscope sensor to turn the screen on/off by tilting, camera sensor by swiping your hand across it or facial recognition, magnetic sensor from opening/closing screen cover, voice command, another device over WiFi and Bluetooth.

[TIP] Screen Off and Lock

Would you like to leave a tip of a software I'm using. Is the Screen Off and Lock. You can set up to make the screen lock just by sliding your finger on the button back or recent. At least to block not need to use the power button.
The application is available in the Google Store.

Try gravity screen. It uses sensors to lock and unlock the screen.
Sent from my GT-S6500D using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
If you have root, an alternative is the Xposed module KnockOff. It works well with 4.4.2. Double-tap status bar. It's even a quick way to turn off screen when you only momentarily want to check lockscreen.
With Gravitybox, I have set long press in the "multitasking button" to turn off the screen. Also I have set the volume keys to wake the device. You should try it!

You don't need root for gravity - it's fantastic.
I've set it so it turns off when it's lying down face up, face down, and in my pocket. I don't even need to press the button or any button at all to turn it back on, just using the motion of picking the phone up is enough. If you want to lay the phone down but not turn the screen off, swiping your finger across the proximity sensor gives it a "5/10/20 minute timeout" where it won't turn off.
For me it relieves the paranoia surrounding power buttons as I've had a few phones now where the power button eventually dies, which makes sense, we can be turning our phones on and off for what feels like a thousand times a day!

Ah, my bad. Thanks for correcting my misinformation! I think I probably got carried away on how amazing I find Gravity. :good:
Hi thanks for that. YES. I tame extra precaution about power button.
I use a great app called. Tap tap tap. Des what gravity screen does but simpler and less features. Via the proximity sensor. Thanks for he app though
Moto G owners ought to know about those apps as soon as possible, so they won't screw the power button up just as I did. Even taking extreme care about the way I pressed and avoiding as much as I could the button is now shaking and it is not fixed properly.
Nice tips!
Another one I've been using is the Proximity Actions app
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=novum.inceptum.proximity
It works with the proximity sensor. You can define waving and holding actions. Eg. hold your finger 1s over the proximity sensor and then lock/unlock, or to wave X times to lock/unlock
The bad is
- it install some ads that show in homescreen at random time
- you have to uncheck a checkbox before uninstalling! Be careful

[Q] App: Soft power button on edge/ticker screen ?

I've had an opportunity to play with a display model of the Note Edge recently and ultimately decided to buy one. It'll arrive on Tuesday.
The one thing that I really disliked (coming from a Note2) - is the awkward placement of the Note Edge's power button. So I was wondering if there'd be a way to add a soft power button to the edge/ticker screen -
I found a couple of options to play with which I've linked below.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=jp.co.kixx.tool.offwidget
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.katecca.screenofflock
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=dev.suriv.suscreen
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=it.android.smartscreenonlite
http://www.xda-developers.com/android/wakeup-turns-on-your-screen-without-the-power-button/
That mostly addresses the 'off' part but 'on' looks relegated to being triggered by motion or the proximity sensor (because why would you want a 'screen on' app/button on any other phone - because the screen is... off).
I didn't play extensively with the Edge but if the edge/ticker screen is always on (or in a stand-by clock mode) then can someone make something that detects a swipe down and wakes the main screen? Or swipes to a shortcut that wakes the main screen?

Hey! Glad you decided to join us edge users! About your question I'm personally using screen off and lock. I've had no problems and its working beautifully. Got it on my list of apps on the edge and even with the edge on just using it to control my music i click the button for it to turn off the screen and it does just that. It has some nice features as far as animations which i like. As far as the other apps I haven't tried them yet. Hope this helps. Have a good day
easy to do, already sorta included..... with screen off swipe up/down(one motion, do not lift finger between) on the edge screen the edge clock will activate, then swipe from right to left to pull up the app shortcuts cocktail, tap any app in the list and it will wake the main screen and app will be launched and waiting behind lock screen

Oh, sweet. Thanks for this! I kept accidentally activating that and couldn't figure out what I was doing. Heh. I love this phone, I keep finding new things.
The easiest way around the poor power button placement is just to buy the official case so it turns on and off when you open and close the case. It really should of just came with the phone. They belong together. I bought it. It really is like a piece of the phone.

I use greenify. I long press the home button and it hibernates and turns off the screen. I've found it so much nicer than trying to mess with the power button location.

Screen off and lock has this capability add well.
I don't mind having the power button on top, it's the switched back button and last used buttons I still can't get used to. Oh and I don't like how the home key doesn't respond to the pen without press, fail.
Lately I've set GMD gesture control to double tap for screen off. Just have to blacklist a few apps (like calculator) and keyboard where a rapid set of taps will shut screen off when you are trying to do something else. Would be nice if there was a double tap to turn screen on! Some phones can do this. But, for now, I'm fine with just pressing home button for that.

Fingerprint gesture app that doesn't break OOS' swipe to view notifications gesture

Hey guys, anyone know of an app that doesn't the stock gestures? Particularly the drop down notifications menu.
I've tried with Finger Scanner Gestures but it broke the drop-down.
I'm looking to being able to lock the phone when long-pressing the fingerprint.
Thank you!
Its easier to reach the power button instead of the FP for long press ...

Thing is I don't know how much it'll last. I've experienced deterioration in the past with the power button. Also idk, it seems more comfortable to do it with the fingerprint.
I'd also love to get other gestures to work tho .
Why not remap one of the on screen buttons to lock screen function? It's a built in OOS feature and that way, you don't have to use the physical lock key button.
