Canadian carriers disabling Note7 IMEIs on December 15th, 2016 - Note 7 Questions & Answers

Sad but true. I may need to have my Note7 swapped afterall.
I got an email from my corporate Telus retailer saying that all carriers in Canada will be disabling on December 15th.
Now I need to finally bite the bullet and get an inferior S7 Edge. To say I am disappointed would be an understatement.

I've seen several threads from different countries saying something similar, that N7 will be disabled. But I don't recall reading any where it has actually happened. I may have missed that, but believe at this point it's a threat to motivate returns. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Yikes! Guess I spoke too soon. If updates are disabled, I wonder if they will still work.

who knows, but either way, this phone is dead, so if you can get rid of it, I wouldnt wait any longer

Yeah the carriers in New Zealand blacklisted the phones. It doesn't matter about a software update at that point.
In Canada, they will push an update on Dec 12 to max the battery at 15% and disable wifi and bluetooth. And on Dec 15, carriers will blacklist the phone.

Exactly, im waiting for the day they will block the IMEI. If this happens. I'll be on this forming pming few guys for solution. Also, looking and preping for one right now.
I will not exchange my phone for S7 edge, stupidity. Unless, Im unable to make the phone work. We shell see. Let them disable already so I can start on imei solution.

Should you have changed your IMEI (change not legally allowed), in case of phone malfunction, phone blocked by Samsung or carriers by other methods, or whatever, you'd likely be no longer able to get a replacement or a refund due to the unrecognized IMEI number...

Was not planning to return or refund. I was never planning to use S7 edge either.
Even if i go for refund, I most likely will give the s7 edge away to the family or sell it quick and cheap, and go for S8. Just no way ill be using the phone that is older then N7.
I think N7 is tabulous =) Would love to keep the phone if i can. If not ill be looking to get something better once available.
I do understand what you are saying tho, and it would be painful for those people who will get imei changed and then Samsung announces N7 refund/exchange program for S8 =)

We are having the same thing happen in Australia on the 15th.
I am going to go the hotspot route (run a VOIP app and use another phone to hotspot from) ... until I can be bothered to spend the time to circumvent the blocked IMEI.
So does anyone have a favourite VOIP app that also transfers phone calls from the hotspotted device to the VOIP app on the Note 7 ?

Ok guys...I'm sad to say that I couldn't sit by and allow Telus to blacklist my IMEI number on Wednesday. I swapped my Note7 for a silver octa-core Exynos S7 Edge :'(
I must say it is much faster than my Snapdragon 820 Note7... and better on battery. But I'm afraid that's where it all falls apart. I miss my Note7 already.

as for the 15th....well lets see what actually happens and go from there.
if its only am OTA then those of us who blocked those may be okay.
if imei block thats another battle.
i have other devices i can use while trying to get my note 7 back from the dead lol.

6:17am Regina crap city time Dec 15...Note 7 still working on BELL network.....

It happened here in Australia mid afternoon.
I have gone Skype (and bought their number) to get voice calls and for texts I have set up Mysms on my hotspot phone and the mysms mirror app on my Note 7.
A pain to carry a 2nd phone but it will do until I sort the IMEI

Thats the million dollar question.
It would make no sense since Im sure they are aware many of us have the OTAs blocked so they cant touch us.
Would make more sense to disable the imei numbers...
I have no idea how they are doing it...I killed wifi and pulled my sim out of my note 7 for the time being until I see what happens

No data allowed.

Hi guys,
I have the N5100 3G version. I have had it since may and it has worked well. However, since yesterday, Three UK started blocking me from using data. It says I have to get a tablet sim. The problem is I don't want to loose the ability to make phone calls.
Has anyone had an issue like this?
I'm also having the same issue, I have spoken to three support today at length with the result being "we can sell you a mobile broadband plan sim that you can swap out for data" - it appears that Three have launched the LTE version on the note 8 as a tablet only device (ie, no phone or text) and so are blocking all versions of the note 8 under that ruling.
I'm going to try and get to talk to someone not loacted in India tomorrow to look into this as this is my main device for phone calls aswell as data and I'm locked into the one plan for another 9 months!

Yay, I am not the only one! I am really disappointed with it. They don't seem to understand me, I also use it as my main device. I do wonder how they identify the device, it would be good if we could change it so they think its a phone.

We 5100 owners in the US want the exact opposite: tablet plans are so much cheaper, we wish it were recognized as tablets instead of phones! If they are identifying your device by imei number, you may be able to get around it by using an imei from an LTE version. I had a similar issue (in reverse) and that's how it was resolved. I may eventually get caught, but for now, I'm flying under the radar.

How difficult was that to do?
Be careful talk of changing imei is against the TOS on these forums. As tempting as it sounds it is both dangerous and legally dubious. It is a common tactic used by phone thieves to activate stolen phones. Also modifying such information can render your phone a paper weight if not careful.

New OTA - AOJ1

Hey guys and gals, there is a new OTA available. Build number AOJ1. It comes in at almost 119mb.
It is still 5.1.1 and just general performance improvements, etc. I haven't had a chance to run it through its paces yet. I will update as I have a better idea of how it is.

Ok... I'll jump. Already ran the Fall update on Winders 10, might as well throw my phone into early-adoption-land as well.
Not finding this update on my phone. On Cricket Wireless network running on unlocked AT&T version. Since Cricket uses AT&T network, it shouldn't matter much. Is this available via Smart Switch yet or strictly OTA?
Might be prep for Marshmallow
Does anyone have an offline copy of this or previous version that I can flash through odin? I am 2 versions behind and software update says I m on the latest.

Contact AT&T tech support by online chat and they can push the update to your phone. (I did that for one of the Note 5s I'm helping to maintain.)

Tried the online chat. The customer rep refused to push said they have no ability to contact the phone as Cricket Wireless is servicing it. I think its all BS.. the rep didn't know what she was talking. Tried another rep, same answer. I have used TMobile Note Edge on Cricket Wireless and always got the latest OTA updates.

The problem here is that your using Cricket, even though the phone may be on an AT&T Network, AT&T will not recognize the device as being on their network. AT&T is always fairly strict with who, what, and when they roll out updates. It is also possible it just isn't available in the area you are as well. If all else fails go to a Best Buy and have them flash the device to the most current at the Samsung Kiosk. Though they are usually about a month or so behind on updates typically, at least last I recall anyway. Believe me if AT&T Execs had their way I am more than willing to bet they would lock their phones down so hard no one would be able to take their phones to another carrier. T-Mobile on the other hand is fairly open with what people do with their cellphones hence the reason most of their phones can be rooted etc.
On am on at&t with an AT&T phone and I am on old version? I called at &t and Rep says they cannot push an update? Ended up having me call asurion. Insurance company for the phone and they have no idea? Any help in this matter would be great.

Verizon to hotline all Note 7s on 1/31/2017?

Just got this text:
FREE VZW MSG: Reminder: Your Samsung Note7 has been recalled due to an overheating risk. Because your safety is important to us, your Note7 will stop working on or about 1/31/2017. To prevent this service interruption, please immediately upgrade to a new device by visiting your original place of purchase. In addition, to avoid being charged for your Note7, please return it to the original place of purchase within 5 days. For more information, please visit go.vzw.com/note7faq
Does this mean they will hotline all remaining Note 7's based on IMEI/ID? Or is this related to another update?
Did anyone else get this?
And do we really need to return it to avoid full charge? I have read here that this is just a threat - that they can't really collect payment under recall law precedent.
Funny how they reference to return it in the "box" I called twice about and never got. Bastards.
I got this text message earlier today indicating 1/26/2017 is the date. I never received a box from VZW or Samsung either.
...I'm assuming that changing the phone's IMEI (say, to that of my broken Note3) would prevent this blacklisting/hotlining from bricking my phone's network access?

Have you been able to successfully change your IMEI thus far? The apps I've tried so far either need ROOT or don't support Samsung devices...
Found a method involving QPST (modifying the hex IMEI stored in "nv_data") but haven't tried it yet.

I also received this text indicating my device will be turned off on 1/31/2017. I have received constant text messages from Verizon threatening to shut down my phone, return it, or pay full retail price. It's a shame - I've already purchased the phone at full retail price from third party, so they can't charge me full price. Would they really ban the MEID of the devices off the network?

I just spoke with a Verizon rep about the latest test message and was told that they are not blocking IMEI's. He said they are not allowed to do that. He actually seemed a little annoyed and tried to convince me that Samsung is the one that everyone should be upset about, not Verizon. Samsung is the one pushing out these updates to disable our phones and Verizon is innocent to all this craziness. Yeah right! He said that Samsung has something in the works to disable the Note 7's but does not know what it is. If it's in the form of another update, I say we might be Ok if we have the updates blocked.

Why would they need to block your imei when they can just route every call you make to customer service where you can talk to someone who doesn't know what they are talking about.
In the next two weeks they will make it so no one keeps their note 7 for use as a cell phone.

Although I wonder what would happen if you switched out sim cards and kept doing it if it would mess with their system.

Not with the note 7 right? None of these carriers are going to treat this any differently. They all want to be done with a mess they didn't start. Can't blame them. This all falls at Samsungs feet.

Need help with Verizon Galaxy Note 10+ temporary lock.

Hi everyone,
I've got smashed Galaxy Note 10+ from eBay, fixed it and found out that it has a kind of carrier change temporary lock. IMEI is clean, not blacklisted or anything. Technically the phone is unlocked and it fully works with my non-US carrier SIM card for around 5 min or so. But after that a ridiculous nonsense message about carrier change pops up and the phone becomes blocked. It looks like the phone is connecting by itself with Verizon servers, they detect other carrier SIM card and block GSM functionality. I flashed international U1 firmware already but it didn't help. Verizon tells some 60 day activation cap - the phone will be unlocked automatically after 60 days since Verizon account activation. Is there any way to fix it / block the phone from communicating with Verizon? I have no idea how long should I wait since the phone was wiped before sale.
Thanks in advance.
Sounds like the seller might have received an insurance replacement due to the damage. Maybe the phone is blocked by Verizon because it should have been disposed of and/or should no longer be used in their network. Just a guess.

That's just the way the network lock works.....you'll need to wait the 60 days...(probably closer to 30 now...but no way to know)
If you can't wait there are paid solutions that you can use... cell unlocking services.
No amount of firmware changing etc will have an effect on the network lock.....sorry.
Also i disagree with the other poster....sounds like you confirmed its not blacklisted....what you're experiencing is the typical network lock behavior.....pay or wait it out.
Btw any before and after pics?
What did you pay for smashed device? How much spent repairing?

I paid US$230 for smashed device, $320 for screen assembly with housing, $15 for back glass cover (haven't receive it yet), $40 for S-pen. Screen assembly is original despite being bought from AliExpress. It looks like brand new now. Just waiting for back cover and unlock.

This is why I like and dislike Samsung Galaxy flagships. Screen is always damn expensive but the possibility to fix completely smashed device is very high. Actually I repaired few Galaxies in much worse condition than that. At the same time, recently I had an iPhone XS Max with relatively light screen damage and was unable to repair it due to face ID failure (logic board fault). Cheers!

not bad for such an amazing screen

Did you call Verizon? Give them IMEI and they should be able to tell you what's up

I live 13000km away from USA so the call to Verizon could be not cheap. I had an online chat with them via Messenger and they asked me my Verizon account details to answer my question. Obviously I don't have them. From now I'm looking for not crazy expensive unlock service.

Just had one more conversation with Verizon. It seems that they're bloody dickheads! They claim the Verizon does not lock phones which is pure lie. And their temporary carrier lock system is a bloody mess. They're unable to manage it at all!!! Just look at my conversation history with Verizon support:
"We greatly appreciate this (IMEI) information, Victor. After further review, we do show that this IMEI is not currently showing a carrier lock to our network....
I know this is confusing and that you just want to get full use out of that phone. While we don't lock any locks on the phone, it is true that takes 60 days from sale of the phone for a phone to be unlocked. We would suggest that you get in contact with the seller of this phone and instruct them to get in contact with Verizon or alternately, reach out to the selling platform you used and your local carrier. Keep in mind also that Verizon sold phones are not guaranteed to work with other carriers. We would not be able to provide any further support beyond this. I hope this helps clarify and if you have any additional concerns, we are happy to help out. "

No, it's just a standard SM-N975U, not a Verizon branded one. Actually I was able to easily flash it into unlocked N975U1 version. But still that damn Carrier change message pops up and blocks GSM capability.

As I sad earlier, I had a chat with Verizon twice regarding this phone. They checked it by IMEI and told me that it is NOT SIM locked. This is the only useful piece of info I've got from them. Despite of that, they were unable to help me with that Carrier Change issue sending me to original owner / Verizon account holder of this phone. So it's not a carrier variant and not sim locked.

i think ur confused lol... if it was originally sold by verizon then it is a Verizon Variant..
and clearly you are sim locked as thats the exact message ypu get when its sim locked as well as you dont get service with the other carrier..
based on what u posted whoever you talked to has no idea what theyre talking about especially if theyre telling you they dont lock phones which meansthey also didnt even bother to look up their own policy for it and instead just made stuff up off the top of their head..
but hey, dont take my word for it.. it wont work as u need tho until vzw unlocks it or u pay for a service to unlock it.

Yes, I'm confused indeed. Confused by Verizon which says one thing but does other. They clearly said that "we don't lock our phones" but apparently they do it! Bloody bastards!
Did you manage to unlock the device?

No, I sold it. As I can see there is no unlocking solution right now. No hope that it will be available any time soon.

Question Samsung remotely disabled Fold 3

Long story short, GF and I broke up, she didnt pay the remaining balance of our trade in, I had no idea she did that and now my fold 3 has been remotely disbled by Samsung, is there a way around this ?

Samsung would have entered in to a contract with only one of you. Rather than "our" trade-in, it would have been your girlfriends, I assume.
So, you could contact Samsung and see if you can take over the contract - or start another one?
But, it sounds like the phone isn't fully paid off, so isnt owned by either of you yet.
Thats my delima, its under my exes name and when I called Samsung they refused to talk any further. I tried to pay it off but they dont want to hear me. Is there another way such as rooting ?
Pisses me off, im out a S21 because of this for trading in and using a older iPhone which im no longer fond off since I switched to Android.
Long story short, send it back to your GF as it's hers and get one for yourself ...
Can't places like Cricket Wireless activate them? I guess I'm thinking of a device that's carrier-branded, with it being that Samsung locked it, not sure.

You should check the IMEI against blacklist database. If it was purchased through a provider, chances are it will not work on that carrier, but should on others. If Samsung has it blacklisted, you're basically screwed.
Really frustrating, im trying to pay the balance owed so it can be reinststed, trying to avoid buying another one altogether since I gave up my last phone as part of the trade on this. Samsung doesn't want to talk to me.

and when you got the email that Samsung was going to disable it you should have signed out of your Samsung account bc you don't need it to get the phone to work bc you can sign in to your google accounts that's a loophole i figured out how on my own bc I didn't know about it until Samsung sent me the emails bc its gotta be signed in on a Samsung account before they can disable it bc its gotta be log in on Samsungs server i got the email in late December and been using it since i have gotten my z fold 3 and also verzions rom splits the iemi number up as it does on Verizon phones bc on gsm the iemi number is all into one and then Samsung can only disable it when your signed in
they can remote lock it if they don't have Samsung account signed in and i also think its doesn't matter what Samsung account i think it only matters to the one that the phone was bought with but i ain't gonna test it tho i don't want a paperweight

I'm pretty sure your EX GF the owner of the phone is the only one Samsung can and will talk to.
If you can still reason with her I think your best bet would be to contact her and try and work something out
its in her best interests other wise it's just going against her credit. Maybe she'll let you take over the phone and payments.
