Hey all,
I recently updated my HTC 10 Developer Edition to Nougat using the RUU provided by HTC, and I think I ****ed my phone up something awful.
After updating, I was messing around trying to get TWRP working, and while in download mode, I ran fastboot erase recovery followed by fastboot flash recovery <TWRP.img>. This didn't appear to do anything, but I now cannot get my phone to boot into download mode. Is there a fix for this?
Things I've tried (none of them have worked)
- power + volume down
- adb reboot bootloader and selecting "boot into download mode"
- Re-running the RUU
- Factory reset
- Using SunShine to get s-off (can't get temproot)
I had problems getting into download mode after running the ruu. To fix them I formatted a sdcard as FAT storage and copied an official update.zip (search the forums something like 2PS6img.zip or something).
Booting into download mode with that sdcard installed allowed me to flash the update and fixed the broken ruu.
Note that it really needs to be a FAT formatted sdcard. My normal sdcard would not work.

I followed a guide for getting a zip from the official RUU, is that the one you're talking about?

Do you know if it's possible to format a 64GB SD card to FAT?
Thank you for your reply!
alternative is to flash the hosd image, usually titled hosd_signed.img. Use command:
(htc_)fastboot flash hosd hosd_signed.img

Where do I get hosd_signed.img?
do you have the OTA zip for your variant, unzip it and you will find a firmware.zip, change to end to rar and extract, you will have some img files, among them will be hosd_signed.img
EDIT: Never mind, I found a link to the official OTA zip here. I'll try flashing hosd_signed.img
EDIT 2: I ran adb reboot-bootloader followed by fastboot flash hosd hosd_signed.img, yet I still cannot boot into download mode. The error persists.

I followed this guide to get rom.zip from the most recent developer edition RUU (RUU_PERFUME_WL_N70_SENSE80GP_MR_NA_Gen_Unlock_2.28.617.8.exe), but when I try to extract rom.zip with 7-zip, I get a file structure like this. Then, when I try to open one of those zip_xx.zip files, I get this error
Is there something I'm missing? How do I get img files from the RUU zip?
oh, since you are on Nougat there might be something different, but it should have worked as these are images, not dependent on the firmware version. Maybe you could try the command with htc_fastboot and not the generic fastboot

I'll try that, thanks
Edit: It didn't work, unfortunately. I'm going to take a crack at what crpalmer said.

Hello,
I bought my HTC One X for playing full screen games. For this reason, the three dot
menu thing was extremely annoying. After a quick google search, I found a solution.
Everything I did I took extreme care with, rereading all instructions before doing anything as I bricked my Galaxy S Plus before and I didn't want a repeat.
First I tried to unlock the bootloader, which was a success! I then tried to flash clockwork recovery which was successful also. Then, I flashed superuser and I was rooted!
The final step, was to flash a zip I downloaded from this forum. So I turned it on, and it goes up to the bit that says HTC ONE Beats Audio, then stops, for good.
I have no idea what to do next, I tried to follow http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1609190 but it is beyond my capabilities to understand it.
Please help me, I am only sisxteen and had to save for two years to buy this phone!
Extra information:
Three dot fix from http://www.guidingtech.com/10821/disable-3-three-dot-menu-htc-one-x-map-to-task-switcher-button/

Sorry for being a noob but my mental well being depends on seeing the HTC Clock greet me once again!
It get stuck because you're using a deodex android.policy.jar in an odex stock ROM as it won't work.
Do you have any nandroid backup or any ROM.zip on your sdcard ? If yes, you can go to recovery and restore or flash the ROM.zip.
If you don't have any of them, you need to flash the official RUU for your phone but you need to flash the stock boot.img, stock recovery.img, relock the bootloader and flash RUU.

You also can try this ODEXED_Stock_menubarmod_revert2stock_1.28.zip Here, if it works it will save the hassle to download the RUU and revert to stock.
What you need to do is:
1) Download the ODEXED_Stock_menubarmod_revert2stock_1.28.zip and copy it to your android sdk/tools (or whatever directory your android sdk is)
2) I believe you still have the recovery-clockwork-touch-5.8.3.1-endeavoru.img in your android sdk/tools
3) in bootloader, open CMD type: fastboot boot recovery-clockwork-touch-5.8.3.1-endeavoru.img
4) once you're in recovery, go to mounts and storage, mount the sdcard (I normally mount all cache, data, system and sdcard)
5) in CMD:
adb push ODEXED_Stock_menubarmod_revert2stock_1.28.zip /sdcard
The file will be copied to your sdcard.
6) choose install zip from sdcard and flash the ODEXED_Stock_menubarmod_revert2stock_1.28.zip
7) choose advance, wipe dalvik cache and reboot and see whether it will work.
EDIT: If the "RUU_ENDEAVOR_U_ICS_40_HTC_Europe_1.28.401.9_Radio_1.1204.103.14" is the right one for your phone, you can download it here

don't think the OP wants the complicated solution
Just let him boot the phone into fastboot, connect it to the computer and run the RUU from the computer.
This means if there is already a 1.28 RUU xxxxxxx which I haven't checked out

Yep... that's why I edited my post and give the link for the 1.28 RUU, just hope he mention the right RUU as I give him the link as what he requested.
I'm going to give the complicated solution a go because I would rather try and keep some of my files than delete everything. I tried to do the fastboot boot but it failed, so I tried fastboot flash recovery and I was successful. Will this still work?

Flashing official RUU will not delete everything on sdcard... I did it many times.
fastboot flash recovery will not work for that complicated way. Make sure you type it correctly:
fastboot boot recovery-clockwork-touch-5.8.3.1-endeavoru.img
not fastboot boot recovery recovery-clockwork-touch-5.8.3.1-endeavoru.img
From what point in the bootloader do I run fastboot boot?
C:\Program Files (x86)\Android\android-sdk\platform-tools>fastboot boot recovery
-clockwork-touch-5.8.3.1-endeavoru.img
downloading 'boot.img'...

Hello, I have root access on my HTC one Phone and that's it, I kept it as stock as possible
everytime I get an OTA I flash the stock recovery instead of TWRP to get the update then I reflash TWRP
for the 1st time I couldn't update to the latest one, kept on getting a red triangle with an exclamation mark
when I tried many things I found out that the recovery is corrupt (each time I try to enter stock recovery I get the red triangle with !)
Any suggestions on what I should do? I can't even flash RUU because of the recovery.

Transfer the OTA file from your downloads folder to your PC and open it with 7zip. Then open the firmware zip that is in it and find the recovery.img
Flash that to your phone. Then run the OTA again.

Interesting solution, will try it out.
Just to clarify, the OTA you've mentioned should contain the recovery of the new firmware I.e. for the Lollipop update.
Because I am still in kitkat and the OTA I want to flash is the Lollipop one, is it okay to flash a lollipop recovery on my kitkat ?

I did what you've mentioned and I couldnt update, I do not get a red triangle with an exclamation mark, and I can also load into the stock recovery.
but when I try to OTA update i get a message says there is an Error in the file (the OTA file) and also some kind of verification error.
I also tried to flash RUU but it gave me the following Error:

writing 'zip'...

Phone was rooted, but never flashed a ROM
Flashed recovery extracted from OTA file
UnRoot the phone from SuperSU settings (although my root checker still says i have root)
Relocked Bootloader to flash RUU
Can't Flash RUU I get the mentined error.
Cant update by OTA, i get the attached error
Im trying to resist flashing a ARHD rom, but kept it as a last resort
Any Ideas???
RUU from HTCDev page ? I guess that's not RUU but kernel source zip.
Your problem is not corrupted recovery but you have system files modified/removed as shown in your screenshot.
You have two choices here :
A. Restore system part only from a Nandroid
1. Unlock bootloader
2. Install TWRP 2.8.5.0 - http://techerrata.com/browse/twrp2/m8
command fastboot flash recovery openrecovery-twrp-2.8.5.0-m8.img
3. Download TWRP backup 3.28.401.9 - https://mega.co.nz/#!VQgnECRS!asb9fd5ZHF3lf0e0iqmw0QIEc3sYS7JDTjjzi-hXvuo
4. Download stock 3.28.401.9 recovery - http://sourceforge.net/projects/htconem8/files/Recovery/3.28.401.9_recovery.img/download
5. Extract the downloaded 3.28.401.9_ckpv5.zip on PC
6. Boot to TWRP recovery and make a backup of boot only, this is to see where the backup goes on your device.
7. Connect device to PC, select Mount, enable MTP then open Internal Storage, TWRP/BACKUPS/SerialNo./
8. Transfer the extracted 3.28.401.9 folder (not 3.28.401.9_ckpv5 folder) and its content to the backup path on your device
TWRP/BACKUPS/SerialNo./3.28.401.9
9. Restore the transferred backup - tick only boot & system - swipe to restore (this way you can keep your data)
10. In reboot select bootloader
11. fastboot flash stock recovery that you downloaded - command fastboot flash recovery 3.28.401.9_recovery.img
12. reboot - check for OTA, download, install (you should have one OTA to 4.16.401.10)
13. done
OR
B. Use a correct RUU to restore everything and even wipe your internal storage
Check @EddyOS thread for all files needed : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2735235
You can skip step 1 & 2 - but relock bootloader as your device is S-On.

I would rather use option B sounds much easier, plus i backed up my internal SD already. but I just want to confirm what you mean by correct RUU? I used the HTC Dev one first (like u said its not an RUU) but then I used one I downloaded from this XDA thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2701376
the RUU file name is: 0P6BIMG_M8_UL_L50_SENSE60_MR_HTC_Europe_4.16.401.10_Radio_1.25.214500021.06G_20.68.4196t.01_F_release_417809_signed.zip
it gave me the same error I mentioned above (where it says verification error), should I try downloading another RUU file?
Check the thread that I linked. You need one more file htc_fastboot.exe and how to run it,
there are two different commands, 1- to put device in RUU mode, 2- flash the zip
You also can use RUU.exe instead of RUU.zip : https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B17smFr95pleeTQ5U1NzNkZzM0U/view
Just boot to bootloader, relocked bootloader and run the RUU.exe (select run as administrator in Windows Explorer context menu)

This is very weird, thanks for your help, any other ideas?
Note: My bootloader is relocked using Fastboot oem lock command, I did it before running RUU but still get an issue!

Did you relock bootloader before you run RUU ? Is the RUU run in as Administrator ?
If you did relocked, then I'm run out of idea.

Yes I did, I relocked before trying both zip RUU and exe one.
When I go into bootloader it says **Relocked** on top.
That's why I'm confused why RUU isn't working.
Your problem is only one "reboot" file that you need the original one. I don't keep that version file on my PC, if not I can give you a flashble zip to flash only that one particular file.

To flash the RUU.zip you HAVE to use htc_fastboot.exe - NOT the one that you get from Google as it doesn't support the larger ZIP file size. If you try and use the Google one you'll get an error 12

I see, It will be great if I can get a flashable zip file.
but If you cant, do you reckon if I try these steps it might work?
1. Unlock my bootloader.
2. Flash TWRP
3. Flash Revolution ROM version 34.1 (lollipop).
4. Flash stock recovery (the version which is extracted from HTC's latest OTA).
5. Flash RUU using fastboot zip flash method.
What do you think?
Or should I follow the method you mentioned earlier?

No point ...
If you're going to do step 5, then no need step 1-4, what you need is use that htc_fastboot.exe not google fastboot.exe
Or
If you do have lollipop ROM, just extract out "reboot" file from system/bin and later replace this on your stock ROM. Use TWRP File manager to replace it and put permission chmod 755 (but I guess this is harder for you)
Cool, I'll try flashing with HTC_fastboot, didn't know there is a difference, hopefully it will work ?
I'm trying to install the latest RUU for my developer edition. The RUU loads till the point where I accept the agreement and then nothing. I'm on Windows 8.1. Here is where I got the RUU from http://www.htc.com/us/support/htc-one-m8/news/
Any idea why is this happening or how to fix it? I'm having all sort of problems with the phone at the moment. I'm giving a RUU a try to see if it fixes it.
Thanks in advance!
Same thing happens to me, no idea why. Works fine in Windows 7. some people say it's to do with needing a C++ Update but that didn't work for me either
What you can do, though, is once at the T&Cs screen, open a run box and type in %temp% and it'll take you to the Temporary Files folder on your PC and if you look at the newest folders there should be 2. One will contain a compressed file called 'rom'. Copy this to your Desktop, then to a microSD card and flash that via HBOOT or flash it via RUU mode using htc_fastboot.exe (which you can find here)

How do I flash the rom file through HBOOT or the RUU mode using htc_fastboot.exe (87.7 KB)?
To flash the ZIP in RUU mode

htc_fastboot flash zip rom.zip

And unfortunately no, I don't know which update it was as didn't work

I've never done this through RUU mode before, so I'll double check with you.
I'll open normal fastboot. Copy the rom.zip to the root of theSD Card or to the same folder where fastboot is? Also where to place HTC_fastboot.exe, same as fastboot or in the root of SD Card? Then I'll enter the command fastboot oem rebootRUU then htc_fastboot flash zip rom.zip? I'm sorry for the basic questions, thanks a lot!
If you're flashing it manually you don't copy it to your phone, just put it in your fastboot folder along with the htc_fastboot file and then do it all with the phone in fastboot mode
This is the same like applying the RUU exe? This will wipe everything and install everything from zero, right? On HBOOT I have a modified software status , is this going to be fixed as well?
Yep, completely resets the phone to factory defaults

@EddyOS
Sorry for asking more questions, but last time I applied a RUU was with my M7 when I first bought it. If I'm going to apply the RUU exe, does i have to be on fastboot or while the phone is on? Flashing the rom.zip, do I have to flash or format anything through fastboot or should reboot fastboot or simply reboot the phone? Applying RUU, does it reinstall HBOOT? Sorry and thanks again!
My previous post answers your last bit - it puts EVERYTHING back to factory and the latest versions
RUU.exe you can run when in Android or in fastboot mode, RUU.zip HAS to be flashed in RUU mode.
I've said everything you need to know so if you still don't get it, don't bother trying it

I'm just making sure. I don't have another phone at the moment and limited 3G internet connection, so I don't want to get stuck with the phone not working or downloading things twice. Sorry for repeating the same questions though

Actually, I flashed that with normal ADB/fastboot. I think different devices get different results with this. I haven't figured out why yet. Strange thing it seems

Oh yes.
you can even extract or open the android info.txt in it with 7zip or anything like that,it says that the zip is corrupted.
This is the only MM RUU for M8 Europe, right?
I have an error while flashing this RUU "device halted due to large image update fail" is there any way to fix it and flash the RUU ? thanks

This error means you need to use htc_fastboot.exe (post #4 above) and the command:
htc_fastboot flash zip filename.zip
(where "filename.zip" is replaced with the actual name of the RUU file).

This is the easiest way if you are still having problems.
Transfer the RUU.zip to your extSD, formatted to FAT32 if it isn't alrerady
Use a file explorer and rename it to 0P6BIMG.zip (that's a zero, not the letter)
Boot to bootloader and select hboot if it doesn't happen automatically.
Follow the prompts (vol up to flash ~ power to reboot when done)
That's it. Super easy and quick.
Make sure to delete the renamed RUU.zip, or rename it again to something else, otherwise every time you boot to hboot it'll try to update again.

S-on is fine. Why do you think it isn't?
If you are running the RUU intended for your M8 version (in this case, as long as you have a Euro M8) you do not need to have s-off to run the RUU. I wish folks would stop saying you do (need s-off to RUU).
The only additional requirement for RUU is your bootloader must be LOCKED or RELOCKED. You can relock with command: fastboot oem lock

I don't completely remember but I think you have to put the htc_fastboot file in the folder with original fastboot.exe .
And then maybe use htc_fastboot instead of fastboot while writing the RUU command in CMD.
Best of luck.
Edit : Here try this https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=64926626&postcount=6

That's how it's done. You didn't forget.
After you've put it in the folder, instead of
fastoot flash zip **drag and drop zip here**, you do
htc_fastboot flash zip **drag and drop zip here**
i have an issue with my phone i desperately need it fixed and/or backed up as well, its an HTC 10 ,and cant get it to boot up,i have researched the problem, it cant get into recovery nor download mode only bootloader, wont charge properly, when cable connects,it begins to boot loop, when i turn it on ,it bootloops until battery dies, have changed battery and charger port. i haven't yet to install software or able to back up phone using a program like dr.fone or other recovery programs that can install a flash. really need this phone back working to stop boot loop, it is not rooted so i havent tried other ways to install anything to prevent the bootloop. i have done the button functions that involved holding down volume and power button. can only go into bootloader, other functions only attempt but do not follow through thus back to bootloop. again I have yet to try other methods that involve SD cards, using Ruu files, recovery programs like dr.fone. phone is still stock not rooted. S-On
really need to know what Can i try or able to do, open to any suggestions for fixing and recovering, if any my questions have been answered please leave a link to a thread so i may look it ,many forums just need most up to date info before i try it. also upon reading forums , i need to know where to start before using ruu, twrp ,etc.

I am also facing this problem, as like the op said unable to enter recovery, downloadmode or RUU mode. So there is no way to flash RUU.zip files. Only .img files.
