My phone is Asus Zenfone 2 (ZE551ML, Z00AD).
As described in another thread, I was unsuccessfully trying to unlock my bootloader. In the process, I also lost the stock recovery.
I learned how to flash stock recovery to repair it.
My firmware version is WW-2.20.40.198. I haven't been able to find the stock recovery file for that exact firmware version. However, I have been able to get a hold of the WW-2.20.40.196 stock recovery file. I was told on XDA-Developers that this would be fine, so I flashed it via Fastboot.
It seems to be working, although I haven't tried to actually flash firmware through adb yet.
I'm now unsure of which firmware to flash through adb, WW-2.20.40.196 or WW-2.20.40.198.
I have two conflicting ideas.
On the one hand:
1. Since the recovery file I flashed with fastboot was 196, then perhaps I should also flash the 196 firmware file?
Or maybe:
2. If I flash the 198 file, perhaps it will also restore the 198 stock recovery? In that case, perhaps I can just flash the 198 firmware?

So I am going back to stock so I can get the 3.3 firmware. I read exocetdj's thread on OTA, stock recovery, and nandroid backups. I was able to find the version I need for the OTA and nandroid backup, but not the same version for stock recovery. BUT, in the OTA Zip file, inside the firmware zip file, is a recovery image. Can I use that recovery image? Or should I find a close enough stock recovery image in exocetdj's thread?
Thank you for your help.
Also, do I need to re-lock the bootloader in this process?
1. Recovery.img from OTA - yes
2. Need to relock bootloader - no
I know there are threads with instructions about how to do this all over, but they all seem to vary slightly in their instructions and most of the update posts seem to refer to unrooting and flashing stock OTA, then re-rooting, but would this work as it seems like it would be faster and easier. I have soft-bricked my phone more than once and it has been months since I have done this as you can tell by how old my firmware is, so I just want to confirm this will work.
Right now my Zenphone 551ML is on Z00A_WW_2.19.40.22. I would like to update it to Z00A_WW_2.20.40.90. Originally I used fastboot to flash boot.img, droidboot.img, recovery.img, and system.img from (Z00A_WW_2.19.40.22_system_w_root.zip) downloaded from mega.nz/#F!k4MHiAgL!dVuOKeH3eokcwPSNI79ffw.
Can I just perform the same process to update to new firmware by using "fastboot flash...." command to flash all four .img files to my phone, which I downloaded from mega.nz/#F!k4MHiAgL!dVuOKeH3eokcwPSNI79ffw but using the pre-rooted boot.img, droidboot.img, recovery.img, and system.img files from the Z00A_WW_2.20.40.90 folder?
Thanks!
So I found my old M83 the other day. It's running:
S-ON, UNLOCKED BOOTLOADER (NOW RELOCKED) ON TMOBILE.
I decided to try and flash the latest firmware via the sd card method, didn't work. Then tried flashing the firmware via fastboot. Fastboot didn't work either.
Now the phone only boots to the bootloader/hboot screen.
Any attempt at trying to flash firmware, or a recover, customer or otherwise fails.
I'm really hoping I can find a tmobile ruu zip to bring it back to life, however I can't seem to find a tmobile ruu zip anywhere anymore. I don't have a PC so downloading the *exe files doesn't do me much good.
Is there anyone that can please offer some assistance?
Much appreciated in advance!
What I did was to use TWRP and restore my original copy of the ROM (hopefully you still have that), if not you will need to find a TWRP backup of the ROM for the version of firmware you have and then restore the recovery for that same version (it get rid of TWRP). Then let the OTA fix update your phone. This is the route I took. Since Android 6 (MM) is the last release once you get to that stock, you can then replace the recovery (you could backup the recovery also) with TWRP, take a backup and then root or flash a new ROM.
Good luck
Greetings everyone! I just got the phone and it is great, but I have bit of an issue. I know that we need the stock recovery for the software updates, so I attempted to extract it yesterday. I could not do that since we need root to do it, and the only way to get root is by flashing TWRP. So I took the plunge, flashed TWRP, have root, but no stock recovery available.
Today I got an update notification that I cannot apply without the stock recovery IMG. Has anyone been able to extract it or get it from stock firmware files? I have searched the Internet quite a bit and I cannot seem to find the Stock files of this phone. Thanks for the help!
There is no Full Firmware Package-no Stock recovery.
You can test it from AL10 China Version,in Firmwarefinder found the full Firmware, does this not work, install Twrp back and wait for full Firmware
I was trying to unlock and flash custom ROM on my Realme x2 RMX 1991 device.
I succeed to unlock the device. but still have some issues with flashing TWRP as a custom recovery.
I was thinking to flash an old version of firmware like A14 instead of my current version A16. and try to re-flashing TWRP after that.
Is it worth it? and how can I flash stock firmware without using custom recovery?
I tried to flash with regular recovery, but it's juts failed because it's older than the current firmware version.
the boot image shows up but ony for less than a second and when i try to go in fastboot its the same .... less than a second
