Re: Unable to modify file permissions - OnePlus 3 Questions & Answers

Re: Unable to modify file permissions
Guys can someone with more knowledge help me out here.
Basically I can remove files from system but when I replace them with other files - I am unable to change permissions of the files I'm adding.
I've tried everything from installing xposed modules that are supposed to give me rights to changing permissions, changing the location busybox is installed and more, but nothing works.
I'm rooted with busybox, any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

[Q] File System Permissions

Hi All,
Complete Noob here, so please be gentle!
I have been trying to flash the aGPS patch, and it doesnt want to know (on any version) and I suspect it is due to the file system permissions being read only.
My question is, how do I change the permissions to allow files to be copied & renamed?
I have been using Astro with no joy.
I am on CM 7.2 RC1.
Thanks Bob

If you're flashing the zip from recovery, you may need to mount system first in the mounts & storage option of clockwork mod recovery.
If you are doing it via a file manager, there should be an option somewhere to enable root access and or enable system r/w, I use root explorer myself and its as simple as touching a button in the top right corner of the screen to enable r/w.

Thats great, thanks for your help. Got root explorer and sorted the gps.conf file in two minutes.

Help with swapping int mem and SD card

New to all this so proceeding slow and cautiously. Recently rooted my Acer A100 with ota ICS installed. When trying to swap SD card and internal memory using Crossix directions I ran into an error msg that I haven't seen posted by anyone. The only difference I can find is his directions recommend using Root Explorer and I am currently using Root Browser Lite. Anyway when I go to rename install-recovery.sh to .bak it says Root Browser Lite is granted Superuser access but the operation fails. I looked at the Permissions for the file and they are rwxr--r-- I tried to change the Permissions to rwxrwxrwx and got an error msg that said "Changing permissions was not successful. Please note that some file systems do not allow permission changes." Would using Root Explorer change anything? Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.
Sounds like a root issue, try rebooting, opening superuser first then try.... unless you already put the file there and permissions aren't correct, that will brick you! If you already did force close super user. Remember if all else fails you can use Adb.
sent from your future.

Check mount r/w while in /system.

Its because /system is a partition, not a directory, so you have to mount the partition r/w to get it in the folders and files on it.

Fix for missing Live Wallpaper chooser in settings

Go here, do what it says, problem solved! - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=42236196&postcount=4837
All I would add is that you don't need to use twrp to fix permissions. You can do it yourself much quicker if you have this file manager app installed - https://play.google.com/store/apps/...lt#?t=W251bGwsMSwyLDEsImNvbS5yaG1zb2Z0LmZtIl0.

Hi,
Came across this post for the very problem, followed the instructions from the link, but the Wallpaper Chooser option still doesn't appear when I want to change wallpaper.
I have an S3 GT-i9300
Copied SecWallpaperChooser.apk & .odex from a backup.
Reset the permissions to -rw-r--r-- on the .apk
but
the .odex has persmissions -rwS--S--T ; I set them to -rw-Sr-Sr-T, but I don't know how to, or if I should, remove the SST permissions.
Any ideas?
Any help highly appreciated.
Cheers,
Alphonse
EDIT: I read somewhere that the numerical value for the permissions -rw-r--r- is 0644 and I had 7644, thus the SST. I simply deleted the 7 and left 644, rebooted, and it works fine now.

[Q] Move fake gps app to system???

I have tried to use multiple app movers and root file managers to try to move my fake GPS app into the system/priv-app directory on my Sprint variant HTC One M8 with team venom's ViperOne Rom .... When I try to move the apk to the system/priv-app folder, it either fails altogether or it SAYS it moved it successfully, but when I reboot to apply the change, the app is uninstalled and the apk is gone completely from all directories...is there something I don't know about my M8 preventing me from moving this file? Is the phone trying to protect itself from me? Lol I've tried for two consecutive days and gotten nowhere... Any help would be greatly appreciated...

It might be because the System partition is being mounted as read-only when you've booted, which to my knowledge is a result of being S-On. According to this post (under "Advanced Tab"), it appears that Team Venom has a tweak to allow one to mount the System partition as read-write; might be worth a try, but I'm not sure if it will circumvent S-On. If it doesn't work, you may have to make a flashable ZIP out of your APK and install it that way.
A great help!!! Will look up how to make a flashable zip and hopefully have this working!!!
I made a flashable zip of the apk and tried to install it using TWRP. The TWRP install said successful, but when I rebooted, the app wasn't installed... So I pushed the apk into the system/priv-app folder with adb command. When I rebooted, the app was there but it wouldn't open.... Seriously stumped....

Need Samsung Email APK

Hi all,
Something happened to my phone and I ended up having to wipe and re-flash everything. Long story short, I did have the Samsung email 5.0.0.00400 install with the new ROM but I accidentally deleted it via TI Backup. I tried re-installing a backed up version of 5.0.0.00200 but it will not install for some reason.
I've searched around and the most recent apk I could find is 3.3.something, which I have installed now, but I'd really like to get back to the newer version. I know I can re-flash the ROM, but I've done quite a bit of setup, restoring apps and widgets, etc. at this point and I'd hate to lose all that. Figured I'd ask here before going down that road.
Could someone please be kind and link me to a stock Samsung mail app apk for version 5.0 and above?
Thank you in advance!

Hey Aaron very much appreciated! :good::good:
Still a noob when it comes to some most of this stuff. In this case odex vs deodex. I see the 2 apk files as well as all the files in the lib folder. I'm assuming the apk files install as normal? What do I do with the lib files?
Thanks again for your help!

No problem.
If your rooted, you could try just copying the folders over to /system/app. The folder gets 0755 permission and the files get 0644 permission. And then they would be system files. This should work fine, as long as the permissions are set.
Or you could just try installing them regularly.
And Then if you want maybe use Ti Backup to make them system files.
Hope that helps

Yes I am rooted. So just to talk this out before I do anything... I've looked up how to set permissions for files and folders. I have ES File Explorer and understand I can change permissions with root explorer on. I've never done this before so just to make sure I have it correct...
I would copy both secEmail_K and SecExchange folders to the /system/app folder on the phone.
Using Root explorer I would set permissions as:
Folders: rwxr-xr-x
Files: rw-r--r--
Thanks again for your help and quick responses. One more question if you don't mind, just to help me understand permissions. If the files have no executable permissions for any of the 3 classes it would seem as though they wouldn't be able to run. I'm sure I'm misunderstanding however.

I think so, attached pic. Plus make sure owner and group are root.
This is right from my phone now. So all should be good. You might not even have to change it, they might be good before.
