[I posted similar idea recently, but now I have some new stuff, so hoping to get someones attention]
Idea: An application that would scroll RSS feeds on Home screen in Manila.
Of course, such an app isn't hard to make, the RSS Hub saves its channels into simple files - the problem is how to incorporate it into Home screen.
Well, I got an idea for that as well! Recently a small program called Personalizer showed up that enables us to change the network provider name into anything we want - that would be the perfect place for RSS scroller to show up! And since there already exists a way to modify this data, I suppose it would be possible to use Personalizer as backdoor for the feeds to show up in that text filed!
Even if they wouldn't actually "scroll", I believe they could be made to change every 4-5 seconds.
Then the only issue remaining is how to make those feeds clickable...
This is all theorycraft, of course, but I think it's still worth a shot.
I love this idea!
Unfortunately, no one seems to be interested to give this a try
i would love such an app too!
I think a better implementation would be to make a seperate TF3D tab for RSS feed (like they did months ago with the calendar/call history/Communications tabs). This way we could have tabs (in the RSS tab) which would allow for switching between various feed sources (CNN, BBC, etc). I think this could be easier to implement as well.
And one again, I'l love this feature too. (as well as more facebook intergration, so it renames contact to the linked facebook name, and gets email address if provided on facebook instead of just pic and bday)
This would be one of the best additions to touchFlo 3D in a while. i would actually pay for a nice working version. It should have its own RSS Tab with sub tabs. We should put donations up for whoever come up with this. I have $20 US on this. This should be promoted.
Please someone take this up.
why dont you get yourself a good dataplan / dataflatrate for this 20$?
Then there is no more need for pushinternet, rss and all this stuff.

FYI that makes no sense. You still need a dataplan to use 'pushinternet, rss and all this stuff.' Such additions just a better way to integrate the extra features, making them faster and more user friendly.
Silly you
Would be a great idea if this took off as I use RSS all the time and it would be so much more convenient if it was on a tab.

i do have that data plan u are talking about. i just think this is a good idea.
Oh, definitively would love a separate tab in TF3D, as well!
Basically, I would be happy with ANY way to implement RSS feeds directly into TF3D, whether it's via a special tab, or a scrolling bar... Whatever!
I'm not giving up on it. I didn't give up on Manila high-res wallpaper and a month later we got 3 applications that solve the damn low-res wallpaper issue.
So, lets hope the same principle works for this ))

Lol you miss the entire point of the idea of an RSS tab. If I'm using a feed, I want to know what's happening now, not 12 hours ago. If old, outdated information works for you then great, no need for you to post pointless posts to get data plans. Not to mention the convenience that a RSS tab would bring. Hopefully someone will be able to integrate it into TF3D

I think you mixed up something
feeds, podcasts etc. have no live information. the real internet does!
if i browse the internet, newspages etc i get fresh news. if you download an rss feed and read it later, you have old information. and most rss feeds have only very little information, most of them give you 3 sentences and a link for their webpage, where you can read more.
so, the idea of an rss tab is not bad! but its only useful for people, who dont have a good dataplan to grab news instantly.

Sorry but I think you're missing the point a little bit. I have 20+ RSS feeds and it would be fantastic to have these on a tab. Although I have a very good dataplan, I don't have the time to go to 20+ websites every 30 mins to see if there's something interesting. I go to the website maybe 1 in 30 RSS feeds for more info but I do like to be kept up to date on what is new on the websites concerned.
Just my twopenneth worth.

that's the exact reason i want the extra tab. who wants to go on slow ass 3g networks to check out websites when i can get it in an rss feed. i live in nyc and take the subway a lot so there is noway i can use the data plan underground making rss feeds perfect for me. adding it to TF3D would make it a lot more convenient for browsing instead of opening an application.
Exactly
I've posted a request for an extra tab for RSS a while ago in the Diamond section (since I owned a Diamond then). I would be happy to join the dev team with some UI designs...

So, Ive made the app for 1800PocketPC & thought I would make a thread about its development,
mostly because I need a bit of help from those with greater knowledge than me
Saijo (the owner of the site) has already made a thread about it over here CLICKY.
There is also a page on my website about it here: CLICKY
Features:
Displays the latest article from your chosen feed on the homepage.
Shows feeds from these different areas:
- News
- App Reviews
- Game Reviews
- General games news
- Free games news
- Xbox Live games news
Displays articles in a mobile friendly way.
Gives you the opportunity to contact the site or the developer (me).
Due to the youtube plugin not working in 3rd party apps, links to the
mobile youtube page are dynamically added to the menu.
The same applies to marketplace links, which would not open strait
from 3rd party apps, links are dynamically added to the menu instead.
You can view & add comments posted on any article.
There is landscape support throughout all but 1 part of the app.
You can also get achievements!
You can download the current version here:
Or you can like it on Facebook here CLICKY
Im currently working on the next major build, which will add:
Twitter & Facebook integration.
Overall UI improvements.
A better mobile reading experience.
Full portrait/landscape support.
Location based advertising off by default.
Now, what I need is help with at the moment is facebook & twitter.
I found a brilliant tut here & I transplanted some of the code from there, so It can now share articles to facebook.
My problems are these:
I don't know how to post to twitter.
I don't know how to get & display all posts from someone's facebook wall (namely the bestwp7games & 1800pocketpc pages)
I don't know how to get & display all posts from someone's twitter account :/
So yeah, any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Google hath fail'd me
Being as polite as possible, you need to search. If you ask questions like "how do I ..." you're not really progressing as a developer, as the two services you mentioned have amazingly detailed and well-defined APIs.
I will point you to the kind of Google queries I use to find these answers, that way you can keep developing without wasting time waiting for other people to answer:
Twitter: http://www.google.co.uk/search?sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8&q=update+twitter+status+c#
FB Wall Posts: http://www.google.co.uk/search?sour...ebook+wall+posts+c#&pbx=1&fp=b0dc1443d535784d
Recent Tweets: http://www.google.co.uk/search?sour...&aq=f&aqi=&aql=&oq=&pbx=1&fp=b0dc1443d535784d
Thanks. You're right, I probably should have searched more.
I was a bit afraid Id find something & try working with it only to find it didnt work with WindowsPhone :/
You now can get a RSS feed of any XDA forum thread.
Quickstart
Look up the thread number of the thread you want to convert into a RSS feed. The thread number is the the t-parameter in the URL. The thread number from this thread for instance is 1975124.
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",
"lightbox_stop_slideshow": "Stop slideshow",
"lightbox_full_screen": "Full screen",
"lightbox_thumbnails": "Thumbnails",
"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
Go to this Yahoo Pipes page and enter the thread number
Click on the "Run Pipe" button
Click on the "Get as RSS" link and copy that link to your RSS reader
If you want to filter the messages by author or keyword, you can do that too. Enter the desired values, and click on the "Run Pipe" button again. When satisfied, click on the "Get as RSS" link again and copy that to your RSS reader
Manual configuration
The URL for the RSS feed of this thread would be:
http://pipes.yahoo.com/pipes/pipe.run?_id=a41f01f197a7b89b1fcf6b72b3964a9a&_render=rss&t=1975124
If you want to get the RSS of another thread, change the last part of the URL (the t=1975124 part) and point it to the correct thread.
Other URL parameters you can use are "author", to filter messages by author and "match" to filter messages by any word or phrase. If you want to experiment with the parameters, go to this Yahoo pipes page. There you can enter the individual parameters and see the result directly by clicking on the "Run Pipe" button. When satisfied, copy the "Get as RSS" link to your RSS reader.
Some examples:
&t=1975124 The RSS feed of this thread. The "t" URL parameter specifies the thread from which the RSS feed will be generated
&t=1975124&author=.oOOo. Show only messages by ".oOOo."
&t=1975124&match=version Show only messages that contain the word "version"
&t=1975124&match=(?i)version Show only messages that contain the word "version", "Version", "VERSION" or any other combination of upper- and lowercase letters.
&t=1975124&author=(It_ler|tonyp) Both the author and match field will take a regular expression as an argument. If you want to see messages from more then one author, use the "(author1|author2|author3)" syntax
Known bugs / problems:

If you want to subscribe to multiple XDA feeds, they will all have the same name. Workaround: Rename the feeds in your RSS reader
The RSS feed will only list posts on the last three pages of the forum thread. Make sure you don't miss any posts by adjusting the update frequency in your RSS reader
The RSS preview on the Yahoo Pipes page can sometimes remain blank. This is caused by a javascript error, and doesn't affect the display in your RSS reader
Messages posted between 22:00 and 23:59 can show up twice under two different dates. XDA uses 'Today' and "Yesterday' to indicate messages posted in the last two days. 'Today' on the XDA server might be a different date from 'Today' on the Yahoo server.
Version history:
2012-11-05: Alpha 0.1
Initial release
2012-11-06: Alpha 0.2
Items now have correctly formatted date time stamps
URL's to single posts are now formatted differently. Your RSS reader will get duplicate posts once for a maximum of 20 items.
HTML tags are removed from item title (XDA usernames sometimes are displayed with HTML formatting)
2012-11-11: Alpha 0.3
Time stamps are now converted to CET
Improved RSS generation for threads with only two pages
10 more items in the RSS feed (three pages instead of two)
Recieve update messages directly in your RSS reader
2012-11-11: Alpha 0.4
URL extraction would sometimes fail, resulting in duplicate messages of which only one was correct
If a message was deleted, all later messages would be downloaded twice. The postcount is now removed from the URL to prevent this in the future
2012-11-20: Alpha 0.5
You can now filter what messages you will see in the RSS feed. I'f you're only interested in messages by .oOOo. (or quote .oOOo.), add the &match=.oOOo. to the URL like this:
http://pipes.yahoo.com/pipes/pipe.run?_id=a41f01f197a7b89b1fcf6b72b3964a9a&_render=rss&t=1975124 &match=.oOOo.
The match string can be a regular expression and is case sensitive by default. If you want to match case insensitive, start the match string with (?i)
The resulting string would be: &match=(?i).oOOo.
2012-12-17: Alpha 0.6
New in this version is the option to filter messages by author. By adding &author=.oOOo. to the URL, only messages from that author will be shown in the RSS feed.
You can combine both the author and match parameters. So if you only want to see messages from .oOOo. that contain the word "version" use these URL parameters: &author=.oOOo.&match=version
Special thanks go to hapdaniel, a real Yahoo Pipes Guru, who helped me with a timezone problem. With this change timestamps will be converted correctly during both summer and winter time.
2013-04-15: Alpha 0.7
Messages on the first page of a thread are now always included in the RSS feed
If an author updates a message, it will be included in the RSS feed again with the updated text
Links in the RSS feed, will now load the full page on XDA so you can see the message in context. Previously you would only see a page with that single message
Messages are sorted by time of last update
The RSS welcome / update message, now has been moved to the end of the RSS feed
2013-05-15: Alpha 0.7.1
RSS feeds seem to get truncated the last couple of days. As a quick patch I've reversed the order in which the pages are scanned for messages. Messages on the last page are now more likely to make it all the way to the end of the Pipe and into your RSS reader.
2013-05-18: Alpha 0.7.2
hapdaniel gave me some good advise on how to optimize the regular expressions that convert the XDA pages to RSS messages. Conversion is now about six (!) times faster.
.oOOo. said:
I've created a Yahoo "pipe" that fetches the last two pages of any XDA forum thread and turns it into a RSS feed. Use the t= parameter to specify the threat.
The URL for the RSS feed of this thread would be:
http://pipes.yahoo.com/pipes/pipe.run?_id=a41f01f197a7b89b1fcf6b72b3964a9a&_render=rss&t=1975124
If you want to get the RSS of another thread, change the last part of the URL (the t=1975124 part) and point it to the correct thread.
I've tested one RSS feed with Google Reader and Google will only update every 24 hours or so. This is not a bug in the Yahoo pipes script.
Known bugs:
- The date and time of publication are not formatted correctly. Your RSS reader will probably ignore the value.
- Google reader updates infrequently. Use the refresh button on the Google Reader webpage to trigger a refresh.

Nice idea ... an alternative to subscribe threads ...
... but it always will use all posts of the last two pages - regardless if you have already read the posts or not. And next time updateing the RSS feed, it does not continue at the last "synchronized" post, it will again use all posts of the last two pages of the thread.
But it is really a good idea IMO :good:

Which RSS reader did you use to test the feed? If it uses the post date to check for new messages, it will probably not work correctly with the current implementation. The dates on the XDA site are not formatted in a way that can be easily converted to a date time that conforms to the RSS specification.

I just tested it one time with FireFox (standard RSS feed reader).
Now I tested it with Opera Mail, and it seems to synchronize the unread posts correctly.
I will test it later again and report back.
Ok, it seems to work fine for low frequently updated threads in Opera Mail :good:
I will test it in the next few days on a high frequently updated thread.
EDIT:
I recognized a small bug when the poster is e.g. a Recognized Developer.
Then the Name of the RSS feed is something like "<span style="font-style:italic;">name</span>".
Looks a little bit weird in the list of unread feeds.

I've just published version 0.2.
The format of the URL to view a single post in the RSS feed has changed. This change will cause your reader to display 11-20 posts twice.
The posts now have correctly formatted time stamps. I'm not really sure about what timezone XDA uses when displaying dates. I'll probably will have to tweak the conversion a bit to make it bullet proof.
HTML highlighting is now removed from the XDA user name.

Good work !
Ok, there is a time difference for me (Germany).
A post created on 2:15 PM is displayed as 1:15 PM.
And in highly frequented threads there are some posts missing between updating the RRS feeds using a long update interval.
I updated the feeds of a thread last night and read all posts. The I waited till today afternoon and updated the feeds again.
Many post between the last from yesterday and the first from today are missing.
The maximum read posts of a thread seems to be limited ... and that's good.
I just want to mention that it could lead to missing some posts in high "traffic" threads when updating interval is "long".
This is really cool, nice work.
If I may have a recommendation - <title> should include the title of the thread, or at lease the threadid for reference, otherwise if you add multiple threads they will all have the same title and you won't be able to tell them apart without manually editing the name.
If I can add anything to the code on the page - some metadata that would help create good information for the feed, just let me know.

I understand the problem and it seems like a flaw in the Yahoo Pipes design. All RSS feeds generated by the "XDA Threads RSS" script will have the same metadata. If you subscribe to more then one RSS feed, it's hard to distinguish between the individual feeds.
I've been looking for a workaround, but it just seems not possible within the current implementation. As you discovered, renaming the feeds in your RSS reader seems to be the (not so great) solution to this problem.
Adding the thread to the title, as you proposed, works well when you usually read the aggregated list of multiple RSS feeds. It only solves part of the problem so I will continue to look for a better solution for now.

I live in Amsterdam, so I really should have checked this.
What timezone does XDA use when displaying time stamps? It always seems to be correct for me, so I'm wondering if they use some IP-address sniffing or if they just happen to use my timezone (CET / CEST) for all visitors.

Thanks. I've updated the "known problems" section in the OP.
I've just released version 0.3 of RSS for XDA.
Fixed in this release:
Timestamps are now converted to CET
Improved RSS generation for threads with only two pages
10 more items in the RSS feed (three pages instead of two)
Recieve update messages directly in your RSS reader (*)
(*) Every time I upgrade the RSS for XDA conversion script, I will push a message to all RSS users.
I'm not really sure if the timestamps in the RSS feeds are correct now. I would like to have some feedback of USA / Asian members with a different timezone setting. The time zone is now CET and it will break when daylight saving time kicks in in half a year. I've spend way to much time trying to add DST detection in Yahoo Pipes...
I'm now also using Thunderbird as a RSS reader. It seems that every now and then the regular expression to detect the URL of a post fails and outputs all the HTML instead.
Google Reader (and all programs that rely on it) seems to filter out these malformed RSS items. So I don't know it this bug has always been there or that it was introduced recently. I'm hoping that this quickfix solves the problem. The bug is not reproducable in the Yahoo Pipes debugger, so I'm kinda flying blind here.
Fixed in this version 0.4:
URL extraction would sometimes fail, resulting in duplicate messages of which only one was correct
The postcount is now removed from the URL. If a message was deleted, all later messages would be downloaded twice
The second change will cause all messages (max 30) to be downloaded twice. Again: Google Reader seems to filter out these duplicate messages so you might not see them.
I just wanted to say thank you for your work! i couldn't find anything else like it and im amazed that it isnt more popular
Anyway, one thing that i dont particularly enjoy is that every rss feed starts with the big block of text: Update: RSS for xda this version adds the option of ect. ect..
while it is useful information, i would enjoy having most of that at the bottom of the feed instead? or if it was removed i could still get that info from this thread? just a thought. And if not, its still amazing! :victory:
This has really helped me stay on top of all of the threads i follow
thanks again!
Edit: One more thing, the example link in the OP has two spaces in it which caused my rss reader to think the url was invalid. Took a couple mins to figure out what was wrong haha. Is this on purpose?
Op Link: [text]http://pipes.yahoo.com/pipes/pipe.run?_id=a41f01f197a7b89b1fcf6b72b3964a9a&_renSpaceder=rssSpace&t=1975124[/text]
Edit2: after having trouble with trying to put that complete link down without the forum cutting it off into something like http://www.Goo...le.com I presume that is why you put spaces in LOL
Maybe mention to remove spaces in OP for not-so-smart people like me?
I finally found some time to play around with this tool.
First of all: Thanks a lot, it's an awesome tool! (something like this should really be supported by xda natively).
Second: I think you could add this link to the OP - it's just yahoo's page for the pipe to easily create the links and subscribe to them afterwards:
http://pipes.yahoo.com/pipes/pipe.info?_id=a41f01f197a7b89b1fcf6b72b3964a9a
Third: I got one feature request: Would it be possible to extend it's features to an option which does only show posts by the OP, not posts where he just gets quoted (like &match)?
This would make it even more useful in my opinion :good:

I think XDA wants you to get their XDA Premium app. Between that and the email notifications when you subscribe to a thread there is not a lot of room left for a RSS feed implementation.
If you are an active participant in a thread, the XDA Premium app will allow you to respond directly. But if you, like I do, want to monitor a couple of threads for activity I do prefer RSS.

If more users start to use this RSS feature, a lot of them won't be monitoring this thread. If anything breaks or changes, I can notify all of them at the same time.
RSS readers should only show you the message once per thread. I've been testing with Thunderbird as a RSS reader, and it will only show you the message once across all threads. If you have a RSS reader that misbehaves, please let me know. I will look into it.

I will add the link to the OP. If people are curious they can even look at the implementation if they want.

Third: I got one feature request: Would it be possible to extend it's features to an option which does only show posts by the OP, not posts where he just gets quoted (like &match)?
This would make it even more useful in my opinion :good:

There is a trick where you can use &match=posterName[^>]*>.oOOo.< . It will only give you posts from that user. But it will break when XDA decides to change the HTML code used in the page, which will happen sooner or later. So I think it's better to add another option for this specific feature.
I stopped improving the implementation when the response was kinda slow. Your posts are highly motivating.

I'll try to get you on the xda portal. It's an awesome tool and totally deserved. This should boost your thread
Edit: they're not interested at the time being unfortunately

If more users start to use this RSS feature, a lot of them won't be monitoring this thread. If anything breaks or changes, I can notify all of them at the same time.
RSS readers should only show you the message once per thread. I've been testing with Thunderbird as a RSS reader, and it will only show you the message once across all threads. If you have a RSS reader that misbehaves, please let me know. I will look into it.

That makes sense :good:
and yes it only shows once per thread

Good luck! :fingers-crossed:
Version 0.6 contains a major new feature.

Thanks for the tip. I've rewritten the OP and added a Quickstart section. This will make it a lot easier for users to experiment with the settings. I moved the old technical explanation to the Manual configuration section.
Hi! We have published a new app and would appreciate some honest feedback info below.
App store link: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.vi.newsoi.reader
About the app:
We have started to implement an app that evaluates how read-worthy different articles in the internet are. First we made a webapp that displays the current best articles and now have published also an app that displays the article feed for that webpage.
About the algorithm:
Some of the metrics used to evaluate an article are for example how topical the article is, how trending it is and how readable, coherent or objective the article is. These metrics we are the most confident in and of course we do not want to give the full algorithm available.
Future plans:
This is really much a work in progress and suggestions for future development are very welcome. For example now it is possible only to see random top ranked articles. Of course the idea is to make it categorize the articles and then you can browse the articles by categories (sports, world news etc.). Also allowing the user to add their own sources, for example blogs and other text based sources.
