Black/Dark Theme Pixel Launcher - Google Pixel XL Questions & Answers

Anyone know of a true black/dark theme for the pixel Launcher. Not talking about a theme for the whole phone, asking specifically about the swipe up all apps page, Google bar and app folders on the home screen. Even on phones that support substratum like the 6p I can't seem to find a single theme that makes the Pixel Launcher have an all black back ground with white text. I have no idea why Google is so scared of the dark.. just got the OnePlus 3T... Supports black background everywhere by default. Just turn it on... Anyways, rant here if you feel the frustration.

How do you get the black Google search button?

That's part of the theme. You don't have to use the whole theme. Just the overlays for Google app and pixel launcher.

Some of it works. You can install the whole theme expect the framework stuff.

Biohazard works good for system ui

The substratum app in the play store says it doesn't work with the pixels yet. Is that what you're using or something else?

Oh shoot. Just saw that this is a root app. ?

How do you apply a theme on pixel XL or what app do I need? I am rooted and bootloader unlocked with TWRP. Thanks in advance!

Does this also theme the Google page when you swipe to the right? First page with content from Google?

This theme looks and works great.

Pixel 2 Live Wallpapers

Source : http://www.kickedface.com/2017/10/apk-google-pixel-2-live-wallpapers.html
Pixel 2 live wallpapers are now available and works well on Pixel 2016 on Android 8.0! All of them are amazing, the file is around 160mb though. Hit the source link to download and previews!
I love the "live earth" wallpaper for my dark theme. Goes from being a shot of earth in the daylight to the version seen below. These new wallpapers are amazing.
Setup
Nova Launcher (With Google Now Companion APK)
Stealth Icon Pack
Google Live Wallpaper
Swift Black Substratum Theme
I disabled Wallpapers to revert it back to stock, then enabled it. Then I tried to install the Pixel Wallpapers 2017 app, but it says app not installed.
Scratch that, I figured it out.

I honestly don't know. New to the Pixel and started on 8.0 and installed the live wallpapers as soon as I saw the beach scene available.

More than a month old for this reply but still you'll see the difference on the screenshots. I like the old one better, cause the newer one is way too zoomed out.
Hasn't there been an update for this on the pixel 2 after android 8.1 ?
Hi,
Anyone also having trouble installing the APK? I'm running a totally stock Pixel XL on 8.1.0 (april security patch).
The installation progress slows down halfway through, then seems to freeze, then I get a 'App not installed' message.

Which themes work on our 5t with substratum?

Since the relevant thread has recently been deleted, could people please share their theming set-up with substratum?
Would not only be interesting to know which themes you guys use but also which parts thereof (not) to activate given that bootloops seem to be only one false click away.
Thanks!
Swift Black saves pixels and looks awesome on this device. You'll need root to use substratum on Nougat but assuming you knew that already.

No, wasn't aware of this, thanks! I suppose it's advised to keep the oms section off given that it's not supported on oos? Is there any way to theme notifications black as well?

Never had reliable consistency with that in the past so I didn't both trying that with this phone. Everything themes black perfectly. I leave the SystemUI alone and let the notifications come in default white.
From my experiences with Substratum on this phone, leave SystemUI and Android system alone. All 3rd party apps can be themed. So for Swift Black what you might wanna do is theme the apps and then change the system theme internally in settings to dark and then you basically got the full theme

custom icons

is there a way to get custom icons without having to get rid of the pixel launcher as i actually like its ui setup over some of the custom ones like nova. my only pull to nova is that it is more theme-able then pixel launcher. would it take a modified apk of pixel launcher to get this to work?

Based on my limited time with it, it seems like the best way to get custom icons would be to find a theme that overlays the pixel launcher app and allows you to specify which icon set you want for that overlay, but I'm not sure if something like that exists. Definitely make sure you have TWRP working on your device before you start playing with it though. Most of the supposedly oreo-compatible themes I've used have resulted in an unbootable phone, so I've used the substratum recovery zip that it automatically makes pretty regularly.
Have not tried it yet but this looks promising.

Advice for Substratum black theme on stock rooted 8.1

Hi guys,
I've been using the AOSPUI black theme on my Nexus 6P and it worked fine on Nougat.
I now have a Pixel 2 XL on stock rooted Oreo 8.1. The same theme behaves in a weird way and some pop-up windows and the power menu have black on black text. I reached out to the dev and he says it should work properly but I can't seem to be able to make it work.
Now I'm looking for another black theme that works flawlessly on stock rooted. Found a few but need some advice, so would you get:
- Swift black,
- Pi Dark,
- Flux,
- something else?
I need a black theme where EVERYTHING works. Free themes are also welcome.
Thanks!

Swift Black works for me very well. But the first time you install a theme, you can run into weird problems because the theme hasn't been updated for the newest version of the Google apps yet.
When I did a clean install last week, Swift Black wouldn't theme my Google app. An update a few days later fixed this.
So I disable automatic updates and wait for a Swift Black update after the apps which I have themed are updated. This way it alsways works with Swift Black.
But to theme GBoard, you need to read the FAQ (some manual steps are required).
Hope that helps.

Domination is another outstanding black theme that gets updated regularly. Also, keep in mind that it's ok to use overlays from different themes on certain apps while your waiting for theme updates should your base theme not work on a particular app :good:
Swift black FTW

I use Swift Black for system UI and settings, Compound for phone. Swift Black leaves a huge blue frame on the dialer UI for me. Looks horrid.

I don't theme Google apps actually. My problem is with the "Android system" overlay on my theme.

Like I said above, the only overlay that gives me trouble is the "Android system" one. If I activate it (black with Pixel accent colors), my pop-up windows are black on black and my power menu blue on blue, i.e. I can't see any text. It's odd, it worked well on Nougat.
Edit: I wonder if it's the automatic (and stupid) day/night mode from Oreo that's being a PITA? Because my current wallpaper is dark and it triggers the dark mode for some stuff. Why did Google add this and not a toggle to enable/disable it?!

I think the only elements that are affected by the wallpaper theme (auto dark/light mode) are quick settings and notification bar.

It also themes the power menu, which is one of the areas that don't get themed properly. I also switched to a light wallpaper and all my QS were gone (probably black on black again)! Something is definitely fishy on Oreo :/

I don't have the issue you describe using Swift Black for system.
Same here, I'm 100% stock using swift black and couldn't be happier. No issues at all.
I'm guessing Swift Black is the winner here!
About the power menu, it's actually the advanced power menu that isn't themed properly (the one added by Gravity Box through Xposed). And also random pop-up windows like when I'm connecting a Bluetooth device.
I use Spectrum as my main theme. Domination is my second theme and is used to theme apps that Spectrum doesn't, such as XDA Labs. It also is used for the Google apps when Spectrum can't theme the app, though that can be hit or miss. For example, Photos cannot be changed to black by either theme at the moment.
Google seems to update their apps every other day, which gives the themers headaches. Of course, in Android P it may all end up being moot.
PitchBlack is my go theme... Updates regularly and plenty options..

After posting this I thought to myself, hope I didn't jinx myself....fast forward to now, 4 updates later to both substratum engine/swift black.... contacts and phone are not theming...I'm sure it'll be fixed soon but funny how that works. Anyone else having same problem?

Are you creating the modules then rebooting before applying? Since March update that's what you need to do. The modules will show up after rebooting.

I'm creating the overlays using the "build & update" option then rebooting and applying them. If you don't reboot, they don't show up in the Substratum manager.
Right now, I'm waiting to get a payment from Rewards so I can buy one theme or two. We'll see.

I disabled all overlays, rebooted, everything was stock theme. Did build and enable for swift black, rebooted, (twice) everything but contacts and phone is themed. Did this quickly this morning before work, maybe a error on my part. Will try again tonight.

I would delete the overlays before rebuilding them.
On my Pixel 2 XL stock (Not Rooted) I still have to Build/Enable and then reboot and enable again. Does anyone else have this issue? I should not need to "Enable" overlays twice.
