Hallo I am prototyping an app and was wondering if it is confirm to the material design guidelines to locate a notification icon in the appbar Like in runtastic it is essential for my app to switch on gps and have a signal.
But i do not know where to put the feedback. Of course if gps is on, it is in the statusbar but you should recognize it if it is off or without signal.
My appbar contains only sidedrawer an appname.
Thanks a lot!
app bar
App bar should be used to display actions.
There may be certain actions in your app which are available when GPS is on right, you should show those actions on app bar.
When GPS is not on, you show different set of actions.
That itself is an indicator to user to know whether GPS is on or not.

Android was the pioneer of the notification bar. The idea, very similar to the taskbar in windows, offers far more flexibility and utility. One factor common with Windows, though, is that it disappears during games and certain other apps. Now, in terms of notifications, this feature is not that useful because you still have to navigate out of the game to see your notification. There are several utilities to bypass this though: for me, BirdBar coupled with Notifier Pro works perfectly and brings the seamlessness of a multitasking beast. BUT, the notification bar is NOT available by default.
This problem is further highlighted by the fact that now you can place all sorts of shortcuts on the notification bar, the prime purpose of that being that you are able to switch apps and tweak your phone on the fly. Again, all that disappears when the notification bar disappears.
With Android 4.0, an interface element was introduced that stays on screen ALL the time, even during full screen games. That's right, the nav bar.
So here's my idea: take the notification bar, bring it downward and attach it to the nav bar. During a game, the notification bar can disappear but a shortcut to it can live in the nav bar (on the far right perhaps). ALternatively, the notification bar can slide upward with a swipe action starting from the bottom of the screen.
The 'hybird bar' thus created can expand dynamically whenever a notification is received.
Any takers?
Like have menu on one side and notifications on the other... I like it.
sent from my googletron
what about having the muiltitask bar also in the notifications pulldown that way we can have a menu button again.
God I miss the menu button lol
Great idea my friend tell one of the devs if they can help you out with that.

There are several apps (widgetsoid one of them) that can place shortcuts in the notification bar. Also, the placing of menu button is possible even now through mods.
Getting in touch with devs was the prime idea behind starting this thread. If possible, I would like to pitch this to renowned devs and Google Android team itself. Question is: How.
I'm developing app that allows to hide soft keys without modifying the system and without reboot. In only hides soft keys and leaves notification bar intact. After hiding soft keys I replace them similar auto hiding bar with Back, Home, Recent Apps and Menu buttons.
It does NOT modify system files. If something unplanned happens, just reboot your device and it will restore your stock navigation bar.
Unique Features:
* Hide soft keys on any rooted device (Phone UI only).
* Auto hiding navigation bar replacement - swipe trigger upwards to show it.
Differences to other status bar hiding apps:
* Does not remove notification bar
* Does not modify system
* No need to reboot
* Stock Notification panel and settings panels are fully working
* Stock recent apps list is fully working
* No problems with receiving phone calls

I'm collecting new ideas for future updates
It works on the GNEX. Lol I've been using it for a week or more.

Thanks, updated supported device list :fingers-crossed:. Do buttons look ok?
Hi there...
I just try your app and have few comments.
- Softkey could we biger, just like original. It is not necessarily to be smaller because - they can be hidden
- Vibrate on key press is missing thing for me
- After few turning on and off my phone reboot (Gnex, stock 4.2.2., I9250XXLJ1, JDW39)
I am not developer but I was always askin why someone don't make hiden navigation bar (buttons) and activate it just like we swipe our notification bar. Just like that and but very smooth. Al that PIE's and invisible areas was too laggy and don't enough responsive to me. You are very close to my idea and if this will work I think your app have potencial.
Good luck
Hello guys, i have my own implementation of this, I made it long time ago, but haven't released to public until today
Check it: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=41195717
Grate app bro. Confirm that work on GSM GNexus with stock 4.2.2 rom.

0.93:
- Added Google Now button when Home is hovered. Added animation.
- Added option to hide QuickNav bar when empty space on bar is pressed.
- Added option to keep/hide QuickNav bar when pressed anywhere else on scren.
- Added option to delay bar hide after pressing soft button. Pressing new button resets delay.
Donator here: Could it be possible to be able to disable the glow and maybe to add another section where you can be able to change the nav bar icons from a respository of sorts? Thanks! Keep up the good work!

Try newest development version. I added theming funtionality.
hello, developer. Pro buyer here. Your app is very nice indeed and works great. I'm using it on my gnex with rooted stock rom. I just have the following observations:
1. It seems the app makes scrolling of the recent apps stuttery.
2. May I request for an option to use the stock 3-dot menu icon, instead of the 3-bar menu icon? The 3-dot icon blends better with the stock icons, in my opinion.
3. The menu icon randomly appears. (I have disabled it.)
Thanks!
It's actually pretty annoying because the hit box of the buttons changes and it's not aesthetic to see the buttons in the incorrect location.
I don't wanna use one button nav because there is some stutter while unlocking the phone and some bugs while changing the apps within the multitasking.
(Maybe can be fixed by permanently disabling the nav bar (?)
Well, i used custom navigation bar app paid version to modify the navigation icons and they don't move now.
Try the Nova launcher, you can use whichever type of Google bar you want, including a transparent one. I don't even use a bar, just the app icon
I recently switched to using the OnePlus gestures on my Pixel 2 XL to try out some new gestures, and I hid my nav bar using both the XDA Navigation Gestures app as well as Hide Nav Bar (recommended by the OnePlus gestures app). Using both methods, I've noticed that once the nav bar disappears, only half of toast notifications (or whatever they're called, the small notifications that appear on the bottom of the screen and disappear quickly) appear on screen, while half of it is offscreen. The same thing happens to the volume bar while in landscape mode, which basically makes it useless since I can't see anything.
Has anyone seen this before? And is there any other way of hiding the nav bar (so that it doesn't come up even with a swipe up) so that I can see everything like normal? It seems like these notifications/volume adjuster/other elements are dependent on having a certain border at the bottom.. Is there any way to emulate that? Thanks!
I can't seem to reproduce the problem for toasts (tested using Discord for the toast that appears when downloading an image), but I do have the volume bar in landscape mode problem. Is there a specific app you notice cut-off toasts in? Would be nice to know if there is a solution.
I'm at my wits end.
No idea what I've done. My status/notification bar automatically hides itself. Usually it's hidden on home screen only which is how I like it. Now, it hides everywhere and I have fullscreen gestures on so I swipe to go back, recents etc.
Android version 10
One UI version 2.1
Running Nova Launcher.
Nova settings: Look and Feel>Show notification bar On, Look and feel>transparent notification bar Off, transparent navigation bar On
Android settings:display>fullscreen apps>everything is set to auto, display>easy mode off,
Notifications>status bar>show notifications > 3 most recent. Each option behaves the same
Notifications>do not disturb Off
I think that's all the relevant settings.
How I'm used to it: status bar hides on home screen, open to app drawer or any app and it's displayed whilst in said app.
Cheers.
Just uninstalled Nova. Behaviour is still the same.
Have restored from backup now
