Can i use VOOC 5V-5A Charger? - OnePlus 3 Questions & Answers

Hello friends, in my country there is no Dash charger from official oneplus. but there are some oppo's vooc charger available. as far as I know vooc charger works in 1+3.
and there are two types of charger from oppo.
1. 5v-4a (same as dash charger)
2. 5v-5a
so if I use the 5v-5a charger would it harm my device? would you recommend it?
thanks in advance

Yes u can use VOOC charger as dash charger, you only need to convert the cable end, from micro to usb C
Am using VOOC powerbank (batt pack) with usb c converter, and it charge my OP3 in dash speed (3000++mAh charging rate)

I only have ecommerce link in my country,
You can try amazon, but you also can grab one from samsung

So, it's this 1$? Or what? If it's same price or similar, take Dash charger + Cable.

I'm afraid using an adapter would kill your charging speed (reduce to normal speeds).
You need compatible cable for DASH/VOOC speeds - mainly because they are thicker than normal ones. Well, any standard micro USB to Type-C is not designed for such high amperage and it becomes the weak link here. The phone will think you're using a normal cable and won't pull more than 1.5A through.
Tl;dr: you need a DASH/VOOC Type-C cable, no adapters.

I would rather not use that even if it works, you risk frying something.
Those adapters are designed fur 1A, not 4 ... That's a huge difference.

I don't have any charger actually, I use my laptop to charge it which is very slow, and I don't want my laptop on for whole night. so I needed a charger badly. as there is no dash cable here I have to order it and as for now have to use the ordinary usb-c cable for the phone.

You can use any wall charger with 1a, 2a. It will not charge Fast as Dash, but faster than the laptop.

charger + cable for the oneplus 1

Just wanted to know what are specs for the charger/cable. I can get tons of aftermarket chargers for my ip4 at a buck or two at the most from asian sellers from asia. am I right that I simply need a 2a charger, with a mini usb cable at the end? just looking into getting extra for when they decide to release it to the public.

Anyone tried to trace pinout yet? IIRC, I read somewhere 2 of the pins in the cable were shorted, signaling to the OP that it was to take quick charge. I'll try to find that. The same article / post discussed temp sensor limiting amount of charge since the OP would get hot. Not as quick as true fast charge, but faster than standard.
edit: found it: https://forums.oneplus.net/threads/vooc-charging-seems-to-be-working.12639/ by one of XDA's well known devs, @graffixnyc - Thanks Patrick!

I have a question. If you use the OPO charger, but plug a usb extender into it(and the OPO cable goes into a usb female at the end of the extender cable), does does having that non-OPO cable in the chain slow things down? Mine does seem to charge slow, but I've honestly never connected the OPO cable directly from the charger to the phone to compare. I honestly don't understand how anyone could use it like that (or any other cable coming with a phone). Not even long enough to stretch from an outlet to a table top if the outlet is right next to the table. My Dell Venue 8 Pro cable is amazing(ly ridiculous). It's maybe a foot long. I guess they expect us to charge our devices on the floor? With the DV8P case the cable would barely even reach the floor!
i can confirm that using the OPO wall charger with a 3rd party usb cable does result in a slower charge time. I tried 2 different cables-- both were of different gauges and lengths-- both resulted in different charge times and were all at least 2-3x slower then the OPO cable. anybody with knowledge as to what kind of cable OPO is using and where we can buy longer versions?

I can also confirm slower charging using the stock charger with aftermarket cable. But most of my cables are cheaper, is it possible that the gauge of the wire inside the cable is higher on opo cable? Allowing more amps through?
Also, @effluent , if using an aftermarket cable slows things down, I'm assuming putting an extension in the middle will have very similar negative impacts.

You want a charger cable that won't fail.... Stop buying them online. I've bought them everywhere online and they just can't compete with the usb/charger cable from tmobile.... Maybe be the same for other service providers. Plus you get 30 days to refund or exchange.... So you know after a month if it's worth it which it is.... Those teeth won't sit down and ruin the quality of the charge like 90 percent of the cables online.

You just have to find the right cable. I went through this same thing with my galaxy s5. I got the application "galaxy charging current" and compared the milliamps of all my cables. Some would only do 4-500 ma. Some would do 1800ma. It just depends on the cable. I'm using the cable I got with a ps4 right now, and it will do 1800, and it's 4 feet long.

Try a fast-charge cable, it has the correct pinout (shorted pins) for fast charging.
www<DOT>amazon.co.uk/dp/B0088HTYUE
And you can't overcharge, it's the phone that demands the current, not the charger that pushes the current through the phone. The phone's charging circuit protects the phone for overcharging and handshakes the right charging current with the connected charger. Charging Android is quiet a complex thing...

its not the cable that enables the 'fast charge' feature. its the wall plug itself.

its not the cable, but the wall adaptor you plug your cable into. the thing you want to pay attention to is the amperage (written mA). most any USB adaptor bought at a wallmart powerstrip section will push 2.1 amps. stay out of the tech section of the store, those will cost a lot more and only push 1 amp.

The cable shouldn't matter but I have the Samsung multi-charge cable (3-in-1) and it doesn't support fast charging even if the Note 4 is the only device plugged in. I do have a cheap 6 foot cable I got from Monoprice which supports it just fine.
Needs to switch to 9 volts to fast charge. Look at the charger

The only thing to watch out for is that this cable will have slightly higher amperage (1.67A) than normal going through it, still not as high as a [email protected] charger, though. Higher amperage result in a lower gauge wire (thicker wire). Just FYI as this is a common failure amongst USB cables that is often times not stated. For a 2A power charger, for example, you would want a 20AWG cable instead of the dinky 26-28 AWG that are normally given.

oh I had always wondered how much the cable matters. would it just wear out the cable faster, or would it actually throttle the charging speed?

It's a bit of both, wear is more dependent upon quality of the cable of course but higher amperage through it than what it was designed for can result in excessive heat dissipation which is never good and does bring down the MTBF.
For actual charging speeds the gauge of the cable and as well as the length both make an impact on charging speed. Most OEM cables you get with your phones are normally the more beefy, good quality 1 meter 20AWG ones which is just about right for [email protected] (10.5W). For longer lengths you will want even thicker gauge wire as the losses will be higher and thus resulting in less actual power. A lot of companies get by making "USB certified" cables because the requirement is 28AWG or thicker, they're normally the ones you can find for just a dollar or two on monoprice or something.
For the fast charger ([email protected] (15W)) a 28AWG is likely sufficient, still would prefer a thicker one as when the phone is not fast charging it will switch back to [email protected]
Here's a useful calculator to determine the proper cable size needed for the charging load:

Using a non-DASH charger and non-DASH cables?

I am thinking about buying the Oneplus 3 since I haven't changed my phone in a long time. I have a few questions about the charging.
Is the DASH charge just the wall adapter? Do I need to have a DASH charge specific USB-C cable?
Can I get DASH charge with a regular USB-C cable to DASH wall charger? (I am asking this because I use long cables because of the location of my outlets and workstation, ~10-15ft)
If I charge with a basic, QuickCharge, or non-DASH wall adapter will my charge speeds be basic or does it revert to QuickCharge (with quickcharge adapter) because it is using the SD820 chip? Also the same question if I use a non-DASH powerbank (I only need a small powerbank not the big ones they are making)?
I am not sure if this should be place here or in the Accessories forum. Please let me know thanks.
Thanks for the help.
1. For DASH charging you need both the adapter and the cable, both are specific and AFAIK there are no aftermarket alternatives.
2. No, with standard cables you won't get DASH speeds. Wires in normal cables are simply too thin to handle high current of DASH.
3. If you're using non-DASH charger and/or cable, you'll max out at about 1.5A, so a bit less than half the speed of DASH (could be slower, depending on hardware used). QuickCharge is not supported, it'll work at standard speeds.
4. Same logic applies to power banks. And DASH capable power banks don't exist (yet?), so it doesn't really matter what bank you're using.

Sadly I don't think this will ever exist ... OnePlus commented about cable length and they said they can't make it longer due to technical limitations (physics ...). High current = high resistance = lower max length.

Yes this. Although, my Nexus 5X one which is 5v3a does fast charge pretty much the same as the stock Px8el 2 XL one. The Pixel 2 XL has been restricted and doesn't take advantage of it's 9v2a charger rating.

You either just paid or are in the process of paying off a near $1,000US (£750) device. Do you really want to risk damage to your home or the device because you want to save a pound?
Spend the £30 or so and get the correct charger.

Not all USB-C cables are the same. The one we need has to be at least USB-C 2.0. The effects from using the wrong spec cable are unknown to me, but I'm not about to find out either. The potential for damaging the device is why I spent the extra money and got an Anker 6' cable that matches the specs of the 3' cable included with my charger.
Some good info here.

Yh for sure as long as type a to c can deliver 15w it will do the job but not all type a to c can thats why i recommend type c to c for its capability.
I always go with either Goggle directly or the Anker ones that have PD enabled for faster charging.

Oneplus Warp Cable

Hi Guys and Gals,
Does anyone know if there is an actual difference between the Warp cable https://www.oneplus.com/uk/product/oneplus-warp-charge-30-type-c-cable and the normal OnePlus 6 one? I just want to reuse my current charging cable (OnePlus 6) with a Warp Charger (@£29.99) rather than spend £47.40 on a Warp Charger and cable. Any thoughts??
I would guess the cable will be the same, doesn't look any thicker from what I've seen. The actual charger will be the important bit as that's where the circuitry is that stops the phone getting warm as the components which usually cause the heat/slowdown in other phones are in the charger instead.
Thank you

Just tested with the 7 pro:
Dash Charger + Warp cable = "fast charging"
