Having the following issues with my camera. When I open my camera app the screen is very dark, I can just make out the ceiling lights if I point the camera at them. Does not matter if I am in the front camera or rear. When I switch to video, it is opposite, way too bright. Have tried several resets and several different ROM's to no avail. Any thoughts? Also cannot get computer to recognize phone in fastboot no matter what I try, so I cannot get back to stock. Have tried all of the SDK stuff and redownloading drivers. Not sure if the issues are in any way related. Currently running Pure Nexus

Hey dudes,
Here my problem:
Since I first modded my Defy, I lost camera auto focus capability. Have you any idea how to solve it?
I can't read barcode anymore.
I'm using a Pays rom 5.1.
Thanks!
Sent from my Defy.
u tried uninstalling the app and then reinstalling it again?
I have a similar problem with Pays 5.1:
Mostly the camera works but the picture is cut somewhere (rest of the screen is in the color of the last pixel recorded correctly I think) and the screen is frozen for a few seconds until the camera works again (picture is not saved)
and sometimes the whole picture is black or very dark (saved, but useless).
Maybe this happens because of an error in this rom?
I don't know, but I tried to uninstall and then reinstall the application, but it didn't work.
It seems that CEE and UK roms don't use the proper AF setting..

I'm using 3.4.2-155-CEE in Barebones 1.3 and it's ok. There's jpeg fix on the Barebones thread (on the latest pages), but i don't know if it can help, since Pays use 3.4.3-11
I flashed 3.4.2-155-CEE (no custom rom, no data) and took about 20 pictures - no error.

I have the same problem with S.Froyo Cee Edition.... Sometimes i can not take a picture because of freezing screen with the lower part painted with plain color. Sometimes it's ok. When i was on a factory firmware 3.4.2-155 there were no problems with the camera....
I am using official french 2.2.2 update(since my defy is from france). I've updated it trough motorola defy, and my phone lost auto focus. On 2.1 there was the rectangle and when it gets green the camera takes the photo, now it just snaps without the focus.
:/
I've tried camera 360, and auto focus works there, but I need a fix for the stock app. :/
EDIT: I've went to Settings/manage applications/Camera and clicked on the Clear Data, and now auto focus is back!
hi all.
i had a similar problem: after update from 2.1 to 2.2.2 (cee stock both), auto-focus stopped working. tried the "clear data", but without a success. i didn't want to make factory reset, so i tried "fix permission" from rom manager. at first, it threw an error, because it didn't find the busybox. installed it to "/system/bin". after that, fix permission run without an error, reboot, and focus is working again.
just for record
Hello,
I am using French 2.2.2 stock rom and since the update from 2.1, I lost the autofocus. I tried to clear all data from the stock camera app but it did not work. I also tried fix persmissions from Rom Manager as said above but with no luck.
I noticed that the autofocus does not work with Camera360 and Barcodescanner either...
Any clue on what I could try (without a full reset which would be my last resort ) Thanks!
same here
I have the same problem since Cyanogenmod 7.1 flash.
I tried the "clear app data" method and the "fix permissions". Still I can't get any focus.
Some help please ?
Thanks
I have the same problem, neither the clear data nor the fix permissions didn't work...
Hello,
same problem for me, so that programs like prixing or barcode scanner don't work properly .
Thanks
Very annoying problem, I tried everything.
Factory reset, fix permissions, clear cache.
I have WajkIUI (Miui based custom rom) and the 2 camera app do the same. Auto focus is dead.
What is your opinion, it this a hardware related issue?

I can tell you (from personal experience ) that it is possible for the camera module auto focus to break, the camera will still work "normally" but just won't focus.
Mine is/was a SoC module, so I've just been looking to see if I could find a Bayer module to replace it. I haven't found one yet though....
Have you tried going back to a stock ROM yet?
I didn't try jet.
Is it possible that the rollback solve this issue?
I don't even know what is my camera module, but when I arrive to home I will check it.
Well it appears that it might not be the actual camera itself that is broken, I've just replaced mine and the autofocus still doesn't work
I've tried flashing stock sbfs, and also all the suggestions above as well, so I was "sure" it was the actual camera that was broken.
I have absolutely no idea what to try now. Maybe the power for the focus motor in the module comes from a different place to the main camera power?
Does anyone know how to get more detailed debugging information on what happens when the camera is told to focus?
Even if you press and hold the camera soft button it will not focus and give you the green square?
How about booting the phone.. is there any clicking sound from the camera that it auto adjusting itself?

No, whatever I press, the green square never appears, and there is no clicking sound during boot.

Did you manage to get a Bayer camera module from SBE like you said you were going to try in this thread?
I haven't seen anything about this, but my rear camera occasionally goes entirely black. At first I thought it was a problem with the 4.3 roms, but it's started happening even with TW Roms. At first I attributed it to having the Nottach framework on there, but that has been removed and I still have my camera black. Front camera works just fine. I may have to go back to stock and see if it is broken to see if it's a physical issue with the phone, but I thought I'd ask and see if this was well-known first.
Edit: If I put the camera in "Panorama" mode, the camera activates, but it is all out-of-focus. I'm thinking this means it's a software issue. Using Wicked v4 ROM.

I'm stock never rooted and my vamera blacks out sometimes where closing tye camera app doesnt do anything so I have to restart my phone to get it right again. I would like to know if this is a common thing or if there is something wrong with mine as well

In case anyone else is having this problem, I eventually solved it. I flashed Infamous then Wicked v5.1 - camera was still black on both of these. Opened Google Edition Camera photosphere and started taking the pictures and that fixed it somehow. Not sure what the hell was the problem, but it hasn't been an issue since then.
All,
I noticed yesterday when attempting to use the front facing camera that I get only a black screen, the camera app switches back to rear camera for a moment, then the app closes.
I am not sure when this became an issue as I'm not a selfie kind of guy. The rear camera continues to function just fine.
I have tried the following fixes
wipe data in the camera app
wipe user data
uninstall / reinstall camera update
boot into safe mode
uninstall / reinstall app that utilize the camera
None of the "fixes" have resolved the problem.
Does anyone have a suggestion where to head next?
Phone is S-Off, unlocked, rooted, and running the latest stock ROM.
Should I just say f-it and try a different ROM?
Thanks in advance for any advice!
Update: I flashed LeeDroid ROM this morning and the front facing camera is still not working. Looks like it could be a hardware issue...

yah, that's what it looks like. hope you have warranty.
I have the same issue. Previously when I pressed the swirly-arrows button it tried to switch then locked up and wouldn't do anything until I restarted. Now when I press the button it just spins around and nothing happens. I used catlog reader to find some errors being logged. I posted a thread about it if you're interested.

I don't use my camera flash much, so I'm not sure when this started, but all photos taken with the flash have an orange cast or tint to them. In the flash preview before the actual picture, it looks fine, but once the final flash/photo is taken, they're orange. I tried several other camera apps, and they all behave the same way. The only way I could get a proper picture with the flash was to install camera zoom fx, and put the flash in torch mode, then, pictures turned out looking ok.
I was thinking it might be a hardware issue, but the pre-flash is ok, and the flash light is ok. Looking at the flash when the picture is taken, both LEDs light up.
Has any one else seen this issue?
I have an Unlocked US HTC 10 with the stock software (1.96.617.20), and HTC Camera (8.10.779478).
A bit more testing, it seems to only happen when it's fairly dark. And looking at the room when the flash fires, it's very obvious to the naked eye the flash is actually orange, so I don't think it's a camera white balance issue. When there is some additional ambient light, the flash pictures seem to come out ok, the flash itself does not have the orange tint to it.
Do you have a case on the phone? If so, try it without the case.
Had the same issue and like Rolo42 said above, I took off the Ice View case and tried it with flash in an almost pitch black room. No orange tint this time.

This is with no case.

So, I've played around with this a bit more. I think the issue is when it uses a not full powered flash, that it gets the orange tint. In a completely dark room, the flash is fine. The initial focus flash is fine. It's just the flash with some ambient light that is the issue. For what it's worth, I only see this issue when I have the flash forced on. If it's on auto, and it selects to not use the flash, and I then set it to force the flash is usually when I see this. I've tried on both MM and now Nougat, with the same results. I was kinda hoping the upgrade to Nougat would fix this.
So I was looking through my past pictures looking for a specific one, and I noticed that this orange flash issue has existed since I got the phone. I don't think noticed since I usually only took flash pictures for things like the state of the plumbing under the sink before I tried to fix something. I hadn't taken many flash pictures, and when I did, it wasn't something where I much cared what it looked like, other than that I could make out what was going on.
As a result, I've done a chat with HTC, and when through all troubleshooting steps sans a factory reset. I doubt the factory reset will help it, but if it doesn't, the HTC rep said the next step was replacement under the Uh-Oh protection.
Orange tint

Yes and no. I ended up getting a replacement 10 about a year ago. The new phone didn't have the same problem. So I have a phone that works, but I didn't actually fix the phone that had the issue.

Had to do a Zoom meeting and figured I would just use my tablet but found that neither camera was working. I rebooted, cleared cache, then finally did a factory reset to no avail.
The stock camera app doesn't give me anything on either camera.
I tried installing a 3rd party camera app and found that the front facing camera works, but I can't get the rear camera to do anything- it just stays black. Also, if I start with the front facing camera that is working, when I switch it to the rear camera, the app hangs with what was showing on the front facing camera.
Is there a chance that this is a software problem? Has anybody else had any issues like this? It is totally up to date, stock software. No root, no drops, cracks, nothing. Tablet could sell as brand new so I don't think it could be an issue from any sort of bending or impact.
Any help would be appreciated. I have searched all the normal forums and sites for camera issues but have found nothing. I also created a case with Samsung last week with absolutely no response.
Strange! Since you have never modified your device, first thing that comes to mind would be to clear data of camera app but since u already did a factory reset, try flashing stock firmware again. Could very well be a hardware problem, had a similar problem with my iphone. Take it to the samsung service centre if flashing doesn't work. Btw, has your camera worked well in the past? Gcb

Thank you. Yes, the camera worked perfectly fine before, just hardly ever used it.
