I have bricked my Motorola Defy.
I have tried flashing a new ROM using RSD Lite (following this guide). It says 'complete' but my phone will not turn on. Sometimes it will just show the Moto boot logo but never fully boot up. I can only open the boot menu.
The ROMs I have tried flashing can be found here (All UK 2.1 at the top of the page).
Background - I got into this mess by attempting to flash the Gingerbread UI ROM (here).
Does anyone have any ideas? I would really appreciated any suggestions.
Thank you.
Probably you have flashed a firmware which cannot be downgraded to eclair. Try to get again in the bootloader and flash a froyo build (the official french one, for instance).
Hope this helps

but supposedly it is still an éclair ROM so it shouldn't be the reason... best thing would be to flash an original 2.1 rom, I'm sure you can find one on the development section. Make sure to have a fully charged battery though - charge it on someone else's phone, for example.
It's most likely a problem with cache. Power your phone with Volume Down holded, when in recovery press Volume Up + Down, clear data/factory reset, clear cache.

Hi, thanks for the reply.
I have tried using the UK ROMs here: h**p:// and-developers. com/sbf:defy but none have worked. Any other suggestions?
Thank you.

Hey, unfortunately I cannot get into recovery, only the boot menu. Do you have any other suggestions?
Try flashing a JRDNEM_U3_2.59.0 sbf.

Hey.
I have just tried this using the Australian version from here:h**p://and-developers.com/sbf%3adefy
Unfortunately, it did not work. I still cannot boot the phone.
Thanks for your advice, do you have any other ideas?
Have you tried one of the 2.51 version roms?
like JRDNEM_U3_2.51.1 Blur or
JRDNEM_U3_2.51.0 deblur.

Hi, yes I have tried the UK JRDNEM_U3_2.51.1 from here. Is that the same as blur or deblur?
Thanks.
Just an update...
All ROMS I have tried have installed OK through RSD Lite. The result is always 'Finished' or 'PASS'. But then when I try to turn my phone on, it never boots up.
I really appreciate the replies so far. If anyone has any further ideas, I would love to hear them.
Thank you.
UPDATE
I have just flashed the latest froyo leaked ROM as suggested around the net. Slight progress, the phone now boots to the moto boot logo but no further?
Does anyone have any ideas from here?
Thank you.
you do know that after flashing an sbf it takes a very LONG time to boot the first time! I just hope you are not giving up after a a couple minutes of M logo and pulling the battery or something it literally takes like 5 minutes.
You said you are still able to enter bootmenu? That is not possible after flashing an sbf, as it wipes the bootmenu away! Are you talking about bootloader?
Pull the battery and immediately put it back in while holding vol down. If the phone does not turn on just by inserting the battery then continue to hold vol down and press the power button for about 3 seconds, do not let go of vol down. Continue holding vol down until stock recovery appears.
Once you're in stock recovery press vol up AND vol down at the SAME TIME. Now use the volume toggle to select wipe date/factory reset, use the power button to make your selection, then wipe cache partition. Reboot
Walk away for like 5-10 minutes and check back on it.. Theres no reason it shouldn't work

Hey,
I have just got back from dropping of the phone with T-Mobile - Damm!!!!!!!
Thanks for the detailed explanation. I must have talking about the bootloader. Not the menu. I will head back to the shop in the morning and collect it back off them. Hopefully as it is a Saturday they have not sent it off?
Sooooo frustrating!!!!!!!!
I will update you when I have got it back and tested the above.
Thanks again,
Chris.
LOL I know what you mean... I had instant heart failure the first time I was stuck in a bootloop!!! Thought I wasted $400
I just panicked and gave up.. damm! Loads of people have said that its almost impossible to brick a defy. Fingers crosses thats true!! Lol
First, sorry for my english.
I have a similar problem. I flashed the official french froyo.
First it runs good. But today, two days later, the defy reseted automaticaly.
Several times.
Then I did a wipe. At the end the defy reseted automaticaly and stopped at the motorola logo. I flashed again. At the end of the flash, when RSD boots the defy, it stopped at the logo again. After...it must have been 15 minutes I pulled the battery and tried to get into the bootloader for a wipe.
But I can't enter the bootloader (vol up + power). The motorola logo appears and nothing happens. The last time I waited over 30 minutes.
OK, I have my phone back from T-Mobile...here it goes!!! (fingers crossed).
EDIT
Battery is out - will re-charge with the USB cable trick..

Hey, I am still have issues...
I have charged it up but cannot access recovery. I have tried taking out the battery and putting it back in while holding vol down but no luck. I have also tried holding the power button as well like you said.
I am going to leave it charging even longer to see if that helps.
I have a rooted One M8 here with a custom ROM and recovery that I have been trying to boot into recovery however every time I try the phone seems to crash, turn of and then won't boot. After about 15, 20 minutes the phone boots up again by itself. Anyone else ran into this problem before or any advice on a solution? Thanks.
You can get to bootloader okay?
If so, go into fastbootmode (connected to computer) and fastboot erase cache, and try installing TWRP again.

So what exactly worked, and what didn't? The way you've typed it, I can't tell:
You can boot into bootloader?
You were able to flash recovery?
You are able to get into recovery?
The ROM flashed successfully?
But then it failed to boot?
Also, what ROM?
What version TWRP (version number)?
Try another ROM. Be sure to do the default TWRP wipe (data, cache, Dalvik) before flashing ROM.
I can boot into the bootloader and into the system it's self but it takes maybe 15 to 20 minutes everytime the phone is turned of to start back up again and begin booting.
I'm not sure what version TWRP is as it been months since I flashed it and I can't check because I'm waiting on the phone to boot again.

So do I have this right: The phone turns itself off, will stay off 15-20 min; during which time you can't do anything until it starts to reboot itself?
What happens if you hold power button, or power + vol up for a minute or more? Do either of these force it to start booting, or no response until it boot on its own (15-20 min).

It's been stuck at this loading screen for hours. Are there any ways out of this? I cant power off nor can I connect it to my PC. It always rebooted perfectly until I flashed the 5.0 version of ElementalX. Then this happened. Hope to hear some input asap as I'm trying my best not to panic. No other kernels are on here except for micro gapp and CM 13. I would remove the battery pack, but might as well get a new phone at that point. I would post a picture but I'm a new user so I'm restricted. Thanks!

No need to do a battery pull on this phone, as you know is not really feasible. HTC has already thought that out, and built-in a hardwired button combo that does the same thing. Hold power button+ vol up until the phone reboots (may take a minute or so in the current condition). The moment the screen goes dark to reboot, slide your finger from vol up, to vol down (no need to keep holding power button at this point) and don't let go until the bootloader screen appears. From there, you can boot recovery, connect fastboot, etc.
If the button sequence above fails, its virtually always due to getting the timing wrong, either not pressing vol down soon enough, or letting go too early. Either of which, will result in trying to boot normally (not bootloader) which in your case puts you back stuck on the loading screen. Just repeat until you get it right.
Although, at this point, your battery may have just run out. In which case, you should be able to charge, and just hold power+vol down to boot directly into bootloader.

Here was your mistake. ElementalX is only for Sense and GPE ROMs, it doesn't work on AOSP ROMs like CM13.
Once you get booted into recovery, you should be able to dirty flash CM13 to re-install the CM kernel, then reboot. Or at the worst, wipe, flash CM13 and gapps again.
I have a SM-G925T and it started boot loop today. I tried to get into recovery mode by holding Power+VOL UP+Home but that does nothing. When I tried to go into download mode by holding Power+VOL DOWN+Home, it works fine.
Symptom:
Phone boot loops displaying only the very first Samsung screen with Galaxy s6 edge (no samsung boot animation). Once this very first logo screen comes on, the screen goes black and loops again. Even if I plug the OEM Samsung USB charging cable, screen does not show the battery charging screen, just the same Samsung Galaxy s6 edge screen.
I have already tried the following:
1. Flash stock rom using ODIN, flashed successfully, still boot loop
2. Holding Power+Vol DOWN to reset, still boot loop
3. Flash stock rom using ODIN again, flashed successfully, still boot loop
4. Let battery drain, waited 3 hours for screen to boot loop and battery died, plugged back USB charging cable back, still boot loop
5. Flick the power button many times to loosen any dirt, still boot loop
6. Hold the power button for 1 minute, 2 minute, and 3 minute, still boot loop
Please help, any advice very appreciated!

Hold the button combo pwr, vol down and home as if you want to go into download mode, but try to time it that immediately before the download mode screen comes on, use the Vol up, home and pwr combo and keep holding it down, till it goes into recovery. You have to time it so that right begore the download screen lites up you shift to the recovery mode 3 button combo and hold it till it goes into recovery. This works for me and how I do it all the time whether using stock recovery or TWRP.

Thanks for your suggestion Docmjldds but that didn't work either. I think I timed it within 0.5 second of the download mode screen. I always tried cancelling out of download mode and quickly holding the combo vol up, home, and pwr immediately after it and it that did not work either.

I have the solution for you my friend. Flash TWRP using oding (in download mode), then from TWRP install or flash this rom(for this you need to download the rom, connect your phone to the pc and while you have TWRP open in your screen put the file of the rom in the phone)
Rom right here:

This works because this rom comes with its own bootloader and kernel.

Flashing TWRP WILL trip knox. So, if that's a concern to you, then not much more I can tell you about that. BUT.....3.12.3 is latest ODIN. I would use THAT. Then try flashing complete stock firmware from download mode. QC2 being the last. Here is latest ODIN I attached.

I can easily get into download mode but not recovery mode. I don't know of a way to power off, just reset by holding power button or (power button and vol down). I just realized how ridiculous this sounds but is there any way to actually power off the phone without loading android and holding power button, and selecting power off? As far as I know, there's only soft reset or hard reset.
I'm pretty sure my hardware buttons work fine since I need to hold power button, vol down, and home at the same time to enter download mode perfectly. Then I have to press volume up button to enter download mode. So all the buttons that's needed to enter recovery mode (power, volume down, and home) works.
Wonder if bad battery can be be the cause? I don't get any charging indicator (screen with battery animation) when I plug phone to USB charger. Seems to be able to hold a charge but not that long, no way for me to check battery percentage though.

I tried flashing all of the stock roms using ODIN and nothing would work but flashing that rom I linked you before worked and then I was able to go back to stock. Before doing all this, if you don't want to void your warranty.
1-Download the stock NOUGAT, flash it using odin and then if it lets you go in recovery mode, factory reset your phone then try to boot. Give it 5-10 minutes to make sure it doesn't actually boot. I know the first boot takes a while so you will be stuck at the t-mobile logo. If after 10 minutes doesn't go on then try number 2.
2-Having the phone in download mode use the software smart switch.
Follow the instructions in this video.

If none of that works, either use your warranty or

So I just flashed the latest nougat stock firmware with ODIN. Flashed passed/succeeded. No difference, still boot loop Still cannot get into recovery mode but can get into download mode fine like before.
My phone is out of warranty so I'm just gonna buy a replacement battery off ebay and see if that makes any difference. Hope someone has other ideas. I'll use TWRP as a last resort. Maybe that will work but I don't know how not being able to get into stock recovery would be fixed by installing TWRP custom recovery. I suspect I would not be able to get into TWRP recovery either.

Why are you so concerned about tripping knox, since you are out of warranty anyways. And BTW it's a myth that a rooted phone loses warranty. I have had plenty of my phones covered under warranty and they were ALL rooted. With TWRP installed, you can use the advanced wipe actions to basically factory reset and load either Nougat or MM stock. I am rooted using stock just released Android 7 for TMobile firmware. Odin Firmware. Odin TWRP. Then install anything you like. Yes...knox tripped. Yes, you will lose Samsung Pay. For me not a big deal. Otherwise just fine. The warranty comany has to prove that your act of rooting caused the issue the phone has. Samsung will tell people that phone warranty is voind if rooted. But it's ONLY a line they are told to state. Again, I have used Samsung warranty direct...NOT TMobile and obtained free warranty service and my phones were rooted.

Why are you so concerned about tripping knox, since you are out of warranty anyways. And BTW it's a myth that a rooted phone loses warranty. I have had plenty of my phones covered under warranty and they were ALL rooted. The biggest concern about tripping knox for me is that I lose Samsung Pay. It's actually the most useful thing I have on the phone. I can do pretty much every thing on my old phones that I need but it doesn't have samsung pay. I understand it's useless for most people, but for me it's the most important feature.
Do you think i would still have the same problem getting into recovery even if I flashed TWRP? Right now I can't even load stock recovery.

I really have no idea why you are having this issue. The one time my phone was so screwed up was I could ONLY fix by doing a complete factory reset including internal memory and that was via TWRP. Installing TWRP WILL kill Knox, therefore no more Samsung Pay...period. Have you tried smart switch out of curiosity?

I think my problem is worst than what you had before because I cannot even get into recovery mode not just a normal boot loop. This issue is boot loop and not being able to get into recovery mode.
I have not used smart switch yet. I was going to do an emergency software recovery but that would basically just wipe all internal memory and flash the stock rom. I thought I could save some of my data by just flashing stock rom with ODIN, which flashed perfectly every time but still boot loops.

The only thing I can think of is that your setup is so corrupted you basically have no choice here. It's kind of the old adage about knowing it's important to occasionally back up the internal data, but just never get to it. I'm kind of paranoid to every now and then make sure I have copies of stuff around. I know it's zero solace for you, but without getting into recovery mode, there is no way to get to the Internal stuff that I know of. I'm assuming you never used smartswitch to backup or just use a computer to copy paste Internal stuff to a folder for saving.

Try this stock Recovery. I found a post I made almost two years ago with a link to this file. Use the password to open the file and try ODIN again

I realize I'm kinda grasping at straws here short of a complete nuke of your setup....but sometimes you have to bite the bullet so to speak

Really appreciate your help. I'm starting to think more that it's a bad battery now. Hope that's just it instead of the main board.
I left phone on charge for a few hours (constantly boot looping the whole time). I'm able to power off the phone by holding Power button and Volume down for 10 seconds. Screen is completely off, no boot looping.
Step1: When try to simply turn phone on by holding power button for three seconds, the first samsung galaxy s6 edge logo screen pops up but then goes away and phone looks to be off. Like it's trying to get power from the battery but can't.
Step2: If I keep holding the power button, that first logo screen would turn on and off as if it's a boot loop. If I let go, then phone is off again.
Step3: If I go into download mode and select Cancel (restart phone), it goes into boot loop with only first logo screen again. It loops until I hard reset by holding power button and volume down again for 10 seconds. Then phone is off. Same thing repeats if I go back to Step1 again.
Good evening All, It's been a long time since I last posted but want to start at custom roms again and I'm hoping someone can help me as I am now considering giving up on this device.
My sister-in-law gave me her old Galaxy A50 after it stopped working, gives the circle with lightning icon but not the normal charge notification. If it boots I just get the Samsung A50 start screen but no boot and no boot animation.
I have cleared cache, factory reset and tried flashing stock roms via Odin as the bootloader is currently locked so no custom ROM's for me to play with yet. I have tried a couple of stock roms but no joy.
The questions I have are below:
1, could a faulty battery cause the phone to not boot?
2, Is there a way to unlock the bootloader via ADB or some other alternative?
3, is there anything I've missed that I could try to get it to boot thus allowing me to perform number 2 from within Android?
Thanks all in advance. :good:
Maybe
No
Try flashing through ordin and see if it gives an error or completes, failing that - try flashing TWRP and see if you can boot into that maybe formatting data or wiping the system somewhere else might help?
Have you tried more than one charger / plug? - same thing? maybe bad wire / plug
I had this issue today and last week. there's a bug w the latest firmwares. havent had this issue on april/may builds.
Anyway my solution is.....
Once plugged in (lightning circle shows up and nothing happens)
press volume down + power till it reboots
once it reboots, boot into recovery by quickly holding vol up + power then release it 2 sec after u see galaxy logo
once in recovery. let it charge for about an hour so it should have enough juice to power on
The thing I notice is the phone does not like to have it's battery drained it this happens most of the time, but this started happening on the last few updates only.
So I will rolllback or install the one ui rom with custom kernel to stop it from happening ever again. it's annoying
hope it helps. it works for my end with the similar locked BL and stuff as u have

Thanks for the reply, I have tried a few different images via Odin but non of them work and I get stuck at the same place. I can't flash TWRP because the bootloader is locked, unless you know a way I can do it with a locked bootloader?

Thanks for your reply, unfortunately it still wont boot. It has charge as unplugged and currently sot on the android recovery screen. If you can think of anything else I could try I would be very grateful
You could try again with recovery mode, as it charges with that mode. I had to repeat the steps I took for a couple of times for it to boot. Or use another cable perhaps? that's what I did too. It's really frustrating.
