Totally wrong section, you should search and read before doing anything to your phone. Anyways, download chainfire's latest supersu from the internet, flash it in recovery, and you'll have root.

I did that and still get the same thing
Did that and still didn't work. Is it because I'm running 5.0?

That isn't the reason. Chainfire's SuperSU has supported Lollipop for some time now. What version did you try?

I go to recovery. I hit install that version..says installed and I restart my phone. It Still doesn't work. Could it be because I didn't delete other zip file from my phone?

Dude, there is your problem right there!
The advice was to flash the latest SuperSU. That would be 2.46 (or even the couple versions before that also work with LP). You are 44 versions behind!

Does OTA updating work while bootloader is unlocked? Or does it not work only when rooted/custom recovery?

Having an unlocked bootloader does not interfere with accepting an ota, root, exposed , TWRP recovery and any other alteration will cause the ota to fail.
Sent from my XT1635-02 using XDA-Developers Legacy app
Thank you sir

You have to reflash stock. Root and TWRP will cause OTA updates to fail.

Why would you take a chance and end up hard bricked? I gotta bang my head against the wall as you already have TWRP installed and you can flash my nougat stock 7.1.1 rom which has the July 1st security update.

It seems that the Nougat and Marshmallow are the same procedures. The reason why I have made this post is, why didn't anyone here say that it is no different than the Marshmallow procedure?!
So far, everything is working without any complain!
Network is fine. Did I forget something that I should check if it's working or not?
Why should it be mentioned it isn't changed. It's actually only important when things DO change ! No news......no change. Simple as that. And if you do a xda search there will very likely be a post which will mention there are no changes regarding unlocking the bootloader, even sunshine to S-Off the device is still working the same.
Don't expect to be spoonfed but do some good old fashioned research. Checking the HTC dev site and the procedures there to unlock the bootloader hasn't changed either. Even their whole website layout hasn't changed.
But if something hasn't changed in the future we will put a reminder up to tell you
:highfive:

Okay, I'm running 8.1 on December 5th security patch, with Magisk and stock kernel.
I want to update my phone (mostly because it's nagging me), and I also want to run Elemental X.
Can someone help a noobie out? What should I do in order/steps to update my phone without loosing my data/app arrangements?
Magisk is obviously preventing me from being able to do OTA, and when I tried to "Uninstall" Magisk, my phone wouldn't boot anymore and I had to restore from NANDroid.
TIA!

I unlocked my bootloader then installed TWRP and flashed magisk from TWRP and when I tried to update to the latest OOS version I get this error message saying "Installation Failed". I've tried uninstalling magisk then updating but I still get the same error. I don't know what else to do so if you could help me fix this it would be really appreciated. Thanks in advance!
