A few weeks back I purchased the R800at model of the Xperia Play planning to root and overclock. I found out that it's very hard to root the phone with the firmware it was running, so I unlocked the bootloader and flashed a firmware for the R800i. Not ten minutes later I realized that the firmware I just flashed onto my device is also near impossible to be rooted. The build number for what I'm currently running is 4.0.2.A.0.62, and I can't find the previous firmware versions for the r800i anywhere. It almost seems that they've all been removed from the internet by Sony. If someone could please help me that would make my day.

Use eRoot to root .62+ firmwares.

Thank you so much that did the trick, I thought I had explored all the options for rooting!

TL;DR version available at the bottom of the post.
Hello, I have a Sony Xperia Play model R800at from AT&T that originally ran 2.3.3 out of the box, and I read that you can root a Sony Xperia Play by flashing the firmware to 2.3.2 then rooting it and afterwards upgrading back to 2.3.3.
So here's the kicker, I mistakenly downloaded the 2.3.2 firmware for the Sony Xperia Arc, and my phone refused to boot after flashing. Next, I downloaded 2.3.2 firmware for Sony Xperia Play from here, and after flashing that my phone was able to boot but "android.process.media" is force closing every few seconds.
I gave up on trying to root my phone and just wanted to make my phone normal again so I went in search of my phone's original firmware in order to flash that in hopes of bringing the phone back to normal and stopping "android.process.media" from crashing so much. So after searching up and down and high and low for my original R800at 2.3.3 firmware from AT&T, I couldn't find it anywhere! Does anybody have it or does anybody know how to fix my phone?
TL;DR: Stupidly flashed wrong firmware, can't find right firmware to flash. Firmware I'm looking for: USA Sony Xperia Play model R800at Android version 2.3.3 from AT&T.
Just flash the north American 2.3.3. Its way better then the att version.

Can you please tell me where I may get that firmware from?
EDIT: Will it come with the bloatware that came with my phone? Because I got different bloatware when I flashed the generic UK firmware and believe it or not I miss my old bloatware.
Not much bloat really. It's in the development section I think.

Apparently my phone was still under warranty, so I sent it in and got a new one for free so everything is all fine and dandy now. Of course, I didn't tell them that my phone was acting up because I flashed the firmware.

Were you able to access 4G with Generic 2.3.3? (Did the "H+" appeared?)
Hey all, I’m pretty new to this, have been reading throughout this forum and others for weeks. I got a few things I would REALLY appreciate some help with.
I have a SE ARC lt15A running 2.3.3 with 3.0.1.a.0.145 firmware. (I’m in Canada, phone is with Rogers) I bought it locked and unlocked it as I used it for a recent trip to europe no problem there.
It seems very slow like when I press the button for my contacts it takes about 5 seconds to open, so this brings me to where I am now, I’d like to put cyanogenmod on it and get rid of all the pre-loaded stuff.
Do I need to update the firmware before I put on cyanogenmod?
If so I can’t seem to get FastBoot to recognize phone.
But I can get Wotanserver to recognize my phone, there are different firmwares but none from Canada, can I use another region firmware on my phone and have it still work on with my carrier?
I don’t know if this matters but I was trying to flash firmware earlier and phone stopped working, was able to restore it with SEUS, can that lock my phone again?
Could be that i missed a thread that answers my questions, if so would appreciated being pointed in right direction.
Thanks again

mate i have the same issue. the thing is that once we (you) bought the phone locked the bootloader is locked and it cant acces fastboot - even if u got the unlocking code and even if uwill flash debranded firmware. there is no way to do so now. all u can do is root it and get rid of some bloatware. - yes root it without unlocking the bootloader. check out android dev section and DOOM'S version for windows! perfect and easy.
thats the only thing u can do so far - the same as me. just wait.
thanks
What's doom's version for windows? Can you point me to it? Is it better/easier to use than Gingerbreak?
Also can i update the firmware with a different region without screwing up my phone/provider? Is it possible to get 2.3.4 on a branded phone or do i have to wait for SE to release it for my region?

Make a backup of your ROM with PC Companion or Update Service then flash the latest firmware and root.
You can flash any arc firmware onto any arc.
If you still want fastboot enabled then contact me
i did...thanks god u r here..
Thanks guys i'm installing Doomlord.
For anyone else like me who dont know much of what their doing, i flashed 2.3.4 US on my phone with wotan but then had to add apn for rogers to get 3G back.
I am looking to return my Xperia Play which is rooted with the Generic North American R800a firmware at 2.3.3 with bootloader locked back to the Stock at&t firmware that came with as R800at. If anyone knows where i can get that so i can flash my phone back to stock and remove root in the process which is a Gingerbreak root kept by doing a OTA update from 2.3.2, i would be very very grateful. I will be returning my xperia play and forking over the money for a samsung galaxy s2 skyrocket on at&t since i am still within my 30 day return policy. Thanks again for any help with this matter.

The galaxy s2 isn't all that but I hope you enjoy it. Just do a factory reset and delete super user app, they won't even bother looking at your software version or kernel (they wouldn't even know if it's right or wrong anyways).

Someone with that model would need to make an ftf file for flashtool, as far as I'm aware.

Someone did make an at&t ftf he posted in the general section but you need to copy and paste the link into your browser

I am looking to return my xperia play and need to know where i can find the stock at&t R800at firmware that came with the phone originally. I have since purchasing it put the R800a firmware on it (Generic North American) and since i am within my 30 days i would like to return it but want to flash it back to stock so to prevent any lash back from an at&t rep.
If you have any info on this subject i would be very grateful. My at&t Xperia Play is running the generic N.A. 2.3.3 firmware which i have gingerbreaked but still have the bootloader locked.
Good luck! The R800AT users are the very minority in this place and no one seems interested or cares to make a ftf of the R800AT. Just look at a couple people requesting the ftf a week ago.
Well your wait is over. Here it is straight from SEUS. Working, tested on my own phone.

thanks - been looking for this for a while
I used this and for some reason either my phone didnt take the FW or it was wrong. The phone read that it was still R800a. It had nothing to do with AT&T FW??
I'll be trying it myself here soon.
Can that flash tool be used to flash a non-ATT firmware to an ATT phone without unlocking the bootloader? Or even a custom ROM for that matter?

after being a lurker for almost 2 years at xda-developers, I have finally reached a point where I need to ask a question. I've finally purchased an Xperia Play R800a, and I noticed that even though the custom ROMS always works with both R800i and mine, i sometimes see that they require a certain firmware to be installed, which are most of the times not found in R800a version (like the .62 one). I've read some reports of people installing R800i firmwares in R800at phones (AT&T) so I was wondering if I want to install a custom rom which install instructions ask me to install a R800i firmware (like .58 Enhanced or .62), can I simply flash the firmware it requires despite my phone being an R800a unit or should I find its closest correspondent but made for the R800a?
Thanks in advance guys.

I was like that too, i have the R800a too, let me help, its completely interchangeable! I Highly recomend the .58 enhanced v2 (v3 has a few bugs).
For instance just use flashtool to flash it, than install CWM to flash any GSM custom rom out there that is GB unless you want to unlock your bootloader which costs money to install ICS and JB roms. Hope it works out for you Dont forget to thank
