So this is a relatively minor issue, but still one that's kind of puzzling.
Recently my Pixel XL's (Verizon model) network name in the top left of the lock screen has said 'Verizon Wireless' most of the time, except for when I was connected via Wi-Fi calling, where it indicated 'Verizon Wireless Wi-Fi Calling'.
However, now it seems to say 'VzW' as the network name most of the time, occasionally switching to 'Verizon Wireless', and when on wi-fi it still indicates 'Verizon Wireless Wi-Fi Calling'.
Is this strange phenomenon happening to anyone else?
It's based on the APN & PRL settings that display the network name based on the tower you're connected too. Maybe there is a new tower in your area, or Verizon is doing testing on a tower there. You could call them and ask what's up.

Mine is doing this alot lately too. Anything official on why it does this?

Mine is only on Verizon Wireless. Google store edition though if that makes a difference

I'm on Google store pixel xl as well on Verizon. The only way I can get it back to Verizon Wireless is if I toggle airplane mode or reboot. Otherwise it stays on VzW.

Question for you... What band are you normally on with Verizon? in mainly on 4. Also anyway you can post your son settings? and did you get a new Verizon sim activated with the pixel or were you on previous Verizon phone and just swapped your sim in? i was previous on nexus 6p and just swapped my sim in. Maybe I should get a new sim. Also..do you have any options for video calling?

Usually on band 4 or 13. I swapped my 6p SIM in and actually got a new sim from Verizon recently too. What options do you want to see?

Interesting... although I have traveled in a few different cities. Upstate NY, NYC, and South Florida and it has been VzW for all of these, only occasionally going back to Verizon Wireless. I think there may be a component where what is being displayed get stuck in a sense.
What are the general locations of everyone else who is experiencing this?

Let me preface by saying I love this phone except one single issue...my reception is just not as good as other phones.
I jump phones frequently looking for the perfect phone and I thought I had found it until recently. I noticed (t mobile) that my reception (while it says I have a signal) just seems to be spotty in areas I had a great signal on my nexus. the calls seem staticy and often end up dropping.
Anyone else getting this on tmobile as well? And for the record, t mobile's service gets great coverage where I am.
Nope, I'm on T-Mobile as well and my cell ? is actually better than what I was getting on my s7e. No static on Phone calls or anything. I'm using VoLTE

Getting the same. Unacceptable for me as I'm always on the road. Unfortunately, I have to dump this phone.
I'm on O2 Germany and my LTE reception is perfect. Compared to my Elephone P8000 I get 5 bars LTE in my apartment instead of 3-4.

i found turning off volte works a little better. i have only 1 bar of lte where i work for other phones. but oneplus 3 shows 2-3 i dont know why one plus did this. this is just a animation image they changed. so instead of 50% it would show 75% on signal maybe?

Signal meter bar readout will vary with every brand and is not a reliable indicator on reception quality.
Up/download speeds or band switching, perhaps even call dropouts are probably a better gauge.
Correct and while my signal sits here at -110, my phone shows 3 bars...Sorry that's not the truth. This phones reception in my area are far inferior to every other phone I have owned.
I'm having the same issue but when comparing my galaxy s6 and OnePlus 3 with LTE discovery the numbers and bands connected are about the same. It's just when I'm on the OnePlus 3 the calls drop or it breaks up but I don't have that issue on the GS6. They're both on T-Mobile and I have disabled volte on my op3 went into advance settings and selected LTE/GSM prl auto and made sure my apn is correct but the problem still persist.
I can to you that mine is excellent. My desk at work is terrible with AT&T and most phones (including all Samsung, from S7 down) will drop to no coverage. Best phones I've had for reception are the Nexus 5x, 6P, and OP3. Shouldn't say reception because most phones are very close on the signal level, about -120 but I can still make calls and receive MMS at this level with the OP3 when most others drop to no coverage. This is the main reason I'm keeping my OP3.
i pop the sim into sim tray 2 and still the same. going to VOLTE make no changes. did the first batch got hardware issue? the thing this i order mine on first day

I am having this issue too. I even went and got a new sim card hoping that would help, but still on hspa. I've talked to 4 different tech support people who tell me the imei says my phone can't use lte. After telling them repeatedly that it does, they tell me since it shows up as an unknown devixe in their systems, the imei needs to be provisioned kn their end and that it could take up to 2 weeks.
I am going to yet another store today to see if they have any sort of workaround for this. It is so frustrating. It worked when i put my sim in there the first time, but when i called to update my imei, now it's just hspa. So annoyed right now.

@lazzygregg and @coolhandz...To make a veeeerrrrryyyy long story short, you will have to activate a sim in another phone(iPhone is what I used), and once you have LTE and everything working, remove the sim from the other phone and put it in your Pixel. You will have LTE, I promise. Att will never give you att if you give them the imei for your Pixel, I tried for 3 days straight before giving up.

The problem with putting the sim in your wife's Pixel is, you will have to give att an imei from the first phone that you use to activate the new sim. Once they have the imei from a Pixel you will never get LTE. Surely you have another phone laying around.?

So i went to an AT&T store just now. Told rep my whole story and my plan to get a new sim that is unactivated to put into an iPhone first. He played with account settings first and nothing changed. Then he took a new sim and activated it in his own galaxy s6 edge. Same deal. Hspa+ only. I told him I'd just take a new sim to try what my friends here on XDA said to do. He then grabbed a new sim, stuck it in a floor model iPhone 6s plus, activated it, it had lte, then he put it into my Verizon Pixel XL.....voila! It worked! He was stunned to say the least. I said thank you very much, walked out, and now am enjoying my new Pixel XL with LTE on at&t.
Thank you everyone.

So i just got a phone call from AT&T network support. Talked with an awesome guy by the name of Dustin. Anyway, he said that the verizon pixel xl is now officially provisioned on the AT&T network.
So my question to anyone who had issues with LTE or Volte or anything like that who has a Verizon Pixel is whether or not you notice any differences now?

my understanding is that it would be baked into an update and then we would just need to select that option under network preferences. Not totally sure, but I would guess At&t will give Google the information to get it working on the device. I am no expert though.

The only thing i'm disappointed with is that Fido did not provision it for video calling. I spoke to the tech department and was told Google will be rolling out an update to fix that and RCS because the phone is not reading what features the plan has.
Then I was told that video calling over the network is not capable because the phone comes preloaded with DUO which it does not. So I don't know what to believe but I would like for them to provision it for the video calling so I don't have to use my data.
I unlocked and rooted mine on Telus.

Still doesn't make any sence, all they require is google pixel 3... No where does it say bell issued. So does Freedom.
Hi, would anyone have the Three UK firmware for a Pixel 2 XL? I have no wifi calling and Three state it is because i bought it from Sony unlocked and not from them. Therefore they can not allow WiFi calling. The only way is to buy a new phone from them!!
Thanks in advance.
I also have a Sony XZ1 with the same issue and i am posting in that forum aswwell, so whatever one i can get the firmware for is the one i will use until i get the new 4XL on a Black friday deal hopefully.

Hi,
No, not yet, but when i updated my Pixel 2 xL to A10 few weeks ago and noticed that I can no longer enable Wifi Calling. To verify I dialed "*#*#4636#*#*" and Wifi calling is not provisioned, neither is VolLTE (greyed out) same with the Sony XZ1.
Try a different sim. I think the issue is actually 3 or sim. Generally pixel phones don't come with a custom firmware. It's not customised by the phone provider unlike other brands.
Other thing I'd check is router settings

I'm having exactly the same issue. My Three UK Pixel 2 XL (running stock Android 10) can't access wi-fi calling, but I was able to activate it yesterday on my wife's Pixel 3a XL (also on Three UK) without issues. The Wifi calling option simply isn't there on my device.. Is there anything fundamentally different between the two devices which would prevent me from activating it?
