How do I stop Google assistant from using hotword detection even after I turn it off? - Google Pixel XL Questions & Answers

I still get assistant popping up (the get started screen ,voice training) Everytime I say "OK Google " when the screen is on . I would like to totally turn it off and just use assistant by holding down home screen button. Still listens after I go into Google settings and turn off hotword detection .

Skynet is always listening

Stop saying "OK Google"? It's not like you accidentally say that phrase

The point is that it's still always listening

Check out Google history. Not talking browser but the actual google history. Has all sorts of stuff I said in there :silly:

I had to reboot my phone for it to take effect. I saved more battery!

I just checked my history and it only lists what I said when long pressing for Google assistant, I thought you meant it was going to list every conversation I had while phone being next to me lol

You can turn it off

Because you're in Google! That feature can't be turned off.
The hot word detection is for when you're in a different app.

[Q] Okay Google conflicts with Watch. Turning off 'any time' does not solve

Hey everyone, I'm having an issue that I did not have previously on my Nexus 6.
When I say "Okay Google" to my watch, the Google Assistant on the phone pops up and both listen, or my watch cancels.
I've remedied the issue on the Nexus 6 by disabling the always listening feature.
On the Pixel/XL, if I disable the feature in Google Now > Settings > Voice > "Ok Google" detection > Say "Ok Google" anytime, then when I say "Okay Google" from the home screen, I am prompted to set up voice recognition to learn my voice, and the endless cycle continues. So this does not work.
I have hit the "later" button, press home, and try again. The prompt appears.
Is there no way to disable the always listening "Ok Google" detection feature when the screen is off anymore?
Thanks in advance!

I manually wake the watch and say "ok google". The problem is not with the watch, but with the phone.
(I have an LG Urbane as well)

Voice detection screen off (Google Now, Ok Google)

Hi,
I'm starting to use frequently this ok google command for reminders, weather and other things, but it's a pain to double tap on screen everytime I want to use.
According to phonearena LG G4 has the same snapdragon 808 as Nexus 5X but in Nexus this feature works. My question is, is there a way to enable OK google while device is locked and unplugged from charger?
Maybe installing Cyanogenmod will work ?

According to the official documentation this is not supported on any device regardless of ROM:
https://support.google.com/websearch/answer/6031948?co=GENIE.Platform=Android&hl=en
Open the Google app Google .
At the top left, tap Menu Menu and then Settings and then Voice and then "Ok Google" detection.
Check the box next to "From Google app."
For certain devices, you can also change some settings to turn on "Ok Google" detection outside the Google app:
Check the box next to "From any screen" or "Always on."
Follow the instructions to teach Google what your voice sounds like.
Note: "Always on" isn't supported in all languages. If you're unable to turn this feature on, your language may not be supported.
The documentation also states that if you enable the screen lock related setting in the Google app that's all you need to do is to turn on the screen you do not need to have a charger connected but the screen has to be on to make Google work
This option is not enabled even if i change leanguage to english us. The option is only to detect when plugged to charger. Different from nexus or note 4 for example.

see attachment.
I can set this and can even unlock my device with ok google.
My device is not plugged in ! I have to activate the screen first but then it works even when locked.
It also works fine when I use a Bluetooth headset when long pressing the function button there. Even when screen is off.
I use RR.
.
I'm on Imperium and OK Google works when screen on, regardless if it is locked or not. When is plugged to charger it also works with screen off. With a Bluetooth headset it works even with screen off if I press and hold the headset call button for a couple of seconds.

Google Assistant Listening in Full Screen

Can anyone tell me how to stop Google Assistant opening in full screen? It used to just pop up from the bottom on my note 8, but on my note 10+ it takes up the whole screen.

The screen that you are showing is not Google Assistant, instead this is Google Voice Search from the Google App. If you launch Assistant directly (using Home Button or Gestures), it will only pop up from the bottom.

Thank you. I actually factory reset and it's working now. I definitely Had an issue during install. Google was acting really strange. It would hang when I chose some of the options and things like that period I had installed google assistant but I don't think it ever fully installed which is why it was opening up Google Voice search.

Lenovo P2 : Make "Ok Google" work when screen is off ?

Unlike more recent phones (like say my Nokia 8) I am UNABLE to get my trusty daily driver, the P2, to wake up when the screen is off even though I have "Voice Match with Screen Off" activated in the Google Assistant settings. The screen HAS to be on (pressing home button, double tap, etc...) for the "OK Google" command to work and then it will correctly unlock the phone with my voice.
Has anyone found a workaround for this (forcing microphone to stay on somehow? or am I maybe missing an obvious setting on the P2 ? Thanks !

It can only be done with screen on however, you can activate google assistant in screen off when your phone is being charged.
ok I suppose that's a limitation of our older phone...Actually I think the "listen while charging" option was the old "Ok Google", the Google Assistant doesn't have that anymore as I can tell.

Older phone? Nah, keeping mic on all the time costs battery and and this is dependent on the manufacturer and chipset which decide the features set. Droid Maxx was even older phone but it had that feature because it had a separate low power core for listening to OK Google Now.
Right, it's just that now most (all ?) phones would have that enabled.
I couldn't find an app to force the MIC to stay on but with "WaveUp", you can wave your hand above the sensor to turn on the screen and then use "OK Google".

And this is perfect explanation.
Is anyone really willing to be monitored by Google all the time ?

Question Google Assistant not listening when screen is off on Xiaomi EU !

So, on the official rom 12.5.1. I was able to wake Google Assistant when the screen is off. But now that I'm on Xiaomi EU. That doesn't seem to work anymore.
Is there a way to make it work ?
PS: I'm on Xiaomi eu 12.5.4 (stable)
have you tried searching for 'assistant'? if it's available, choose Assistant settings/lock screen

I don't remember mentioning anything about Lock Screen!
I am talking about waking Google Assistant when THE SCREEN IS OFF.

You should enable "Unlock with Voice Match" in security setting. I'm not sure MIUI will allow this option.

"Unlock with Voice Match" applies to Lock Screen. I have no problem waking Google Assistant from Lock Screen.
I want to wake it when the Screen is off. Like when my phone is away and I just say "Ok Google" and it starts listening.
I have same problem too
I want to disable it instead! it bothers me that every time I talk to my google nest hub the phone also turns on and then gets stuck on the lock screen without going back to turning off and going to AOD ... how to do it?
