Rid of T Mobile software - One (M9) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Not the savviest when it comes the cell tech so please bear with me. I got an extra T-MO M9 that just came back from repair (Not original owner, current T MO customer w/ another M9). Looking to use it for work, (GPS/Maps centric, in the U.S. and abroad). While I plan on using Wi-Fi as my sole source of data, Verizon seems to have coverage where work takes me (Sorry T Mobile) while in the States.
My problem: Tried to get my Sprint M7 unlocked to work on other networks to no avail (bootloader/TWRP/SU). Not confident on how I can remove T Mo software for a version that would be compatible with any carrier for data and for international data use.
Some of the walkthrough/guides lose me during some of the steps. If anyone would be willing, can you explain the steps to me Sesame Street style?

Unfortunately you will not be able to switch between T-Mobile and Verizon (or Sprint, for that matter). T-Mobile and AT&T are GSM-based, Verizon & Sprint are CDMA-based. The T-Mobile M9 will not fully function on Verizon (or Sprint).

Alltel-Verizon Merger Rom Question...

My wife and I both currently have HTC Vogues from Alltel running NFSFAN's v6.5 rom and I was curious if we should now, or if not now then when, flash to the Verizon version of a rom due to the Alltel-Verizon merger.
Thanks in advance for your responses...
Maybe wait till its the "new" Verizon?
But really, you should wait till someone more experienced comes by. After all, I am a Canadian user.
Stick with Alltel ROM's for now. They have not completely merged their PRL's and won't completely be integrated for another 6-12 months. Verizon had to sell off some of Alltel and they recently swapped some former Alltel territories with Att due to antitrust regulations so Alltel phones and Verizon phones continue to be slightly different. The only full integration they've done is their billing systems. Hope this helps
if you flash to verizon, you will get billed as if you have a pay as you go plan.
If you go in or call in and fully switch to verizon,
then you can go ahead and flash to verizon no problem.
But if you haven't switched to verizon,
which you personally have to call in and switch over,
which is basically resign a 2 year contract with them.
Not even sure if you can go into the store or not.
info on verizon alltel Merger
You should only switch to Verizon ROM until after your Market transitions into Verizon, Currently there are only a couple of Markets that have transitioned. Keep your Plan if you are happy with it. Remember that if you change to Verizon willingly they Can charge you for overages on DATA. Since you have a custom Rom already you don't have to worry about it anyway since that has already been " FIXED" but As a Alltel user myself I would recommend that you only change to a Verizon rom until the User name and password change to [email protected] as opposed to [email protected]. You have an open based rom and unlocked phone so its the same thing. You should look out for NEW prls out there, currently 40049 is the most current, there will be more coming out real soon that will allow better usage of the Verizon Network, full data coverage as opposed to voice and some data only. Hope this helps

[Q] G2 on AT&T?

Hey guys, new to Android and T-Mobile. I got a G2 last week, and I live and work in kind of a fringe area for T-Mo coverage. AT&T has good coverage out here, but the G2 doesn't roam over to ATT, I can't even register on their system when I select it in the mobile networks settings. My question is- how can I set the phone to roam onto their system when I lose T-Mo coverage? (I have heard that T-Mo can roam to ATT on EDGE). Thanks!
As far as I know, the only way to use AT&T on the G2 would be to SIM unlock the phone and use an AT&T SIM with an AT&T account. The TMO SIM won't just allow you to roam because they don't have a reciprocal billing agreement --- though I am no expert on this.
I believe, though I could be wrong, that the G2 does not have the ability for 3G (UMTS) data on AT&T. As you stated, if you could connect to the network, Edge should work.
One solution would be to switch to an AT&T SIM and use the Samsung Vibrant, which has the ability to connect to one of the two AT&T 3G bands. Of course, if you want to use AT&T regularly, getting an AT&T phone would be a better solution. So, for you, unless you want to switch to AT&T, wifi might be your only solution.
Ugh! That is exactly what I was hoping I wouldn't read lol. Well, I do really want to stick with tmo, just wish my phone would auto roam to att when I lose the tmo signal. Thanks for the reply!

I asked around at work a bit, and there are cases where you can roam on AT&T's network. These cases exist in areas where T-Mobile has not, cannot, or will not build out a network. In these cases, they contract with AT&T to provide their customers with network access. Some phones will show roaming, but I think the software, at this point, has made it a seamless experience, and you don't even know you are attached to AT&T's network. For billing, purposes, if you have a national plan, you are not roaming.
This doesn't help you, but I wanted to clarify my blanket statement above.
Check out the coverage map (Select NO for Are you a Rep, then go to the Data Coverage Map):
compass(DOT)t-mobile(DOT)com
Unfortunately in your area of CA, there is no roaming partner.
The only roaming in CA is in some parts of N. CA up Hwy 1 and 101, towards the Oregon border, and in the 395 corridor.
I'm thinking of upgrading from my HTC Rhodium on ATT to a Desire Z (also on ATT). Is there anything I should be looking for to make sure it will play nice with the 3G network?
Thanks

You'll need to buy the Canadian version of the DZ (from Bell Mobility).

Moving from T-Mobile US to AT&T

Recently moved to a T-Mobile dead zone forcing me to switch providers. As I would like to keep my Defy, I have decided to unlock it and move to AT&T.
Sometime today or tomorrow I will be making the transistion and would like to ask those who have gone before me for some advice...
Preferred ROM for making the switch? (For Example: I'm not sure I completely understand the Bands involved...for a UK ROM, I had to install a patch to get T-Mobile to work, but I don't know how/if it would affect AT&T)
AT&T Software? I can pretty much rip out T-Mobile the software, just not sure about how to get any AT&T specific software I might want/need.
De-branding? Retaining the T-Mobile branded market will just irritate me.
Anything else I should know or prepare for?
Thanks -
Presume you are in the US.
Where I live it's a dead zone as well (for both T-Mo & AT&T) but I use the wifi calling built into the Defy (my wife uses the similar UMA on her Blackberry). The calls are so perfect we could get rid of land lines. AT&T does NOT have wifi calling.
As far as I know there is no ROM that will allow you to run the Defy on AT&T 3G, but I could be wrong. T-Mo is 1700, AT&T 1900 -- both have 2100 for Europe etc. Again, if that's changed someone here will tell you.
I believe roaming -- including data roaming -- domestically is free. That's what I was told by a T-Mo rep, and you may want to double check. But if it is, and you cannot get your phone to work on AT&T's 3G, you may want to stay with T-Mo. Or get a different phone and move to AT&T.
AT&T uses 850 and 1900 and are moving to only 850 which this (US) phone has so it should work in most areas, but I would consider the wifi calling first too as AT&T is much more expensive than Tmo, has data caps and overages unlike Tmo.
Do what you have to do, just be aware of the pitfalls of AT&T.
Thanks for the info. Unfortunately, Alltel was the major roaming provider in the area for T-Mobile, but since Alltel was bought out/merged with Verizon, there is really no roaming in this area any longer.
Wifi is what I am using now, but is extremely limiting, as I am restricted to about 15-20 yards of my living room. There is little to no public WIFI in the area (country living...) and no outside data access though pretty much defeats the purpose of having a smart phone (no Google Maps, remote email, local movie show times, business look-ups, comparison shopping, etc.).
While going with an AT&T phone is an option, I really like the water resistance of the Defy. Since I do a lot of outdoor activities (e.g. hiking) and drive a doorless/topless CJ7 most of year, water resistance is a godsend.
AT&T, while not ideal, is currently my best option.
Does anyone know for sure that an unlocked Defy will work on the 3G 850 freak for AT&T? I recall that some protocols also need to be on a phone for it to register on a specific network.
Looks like this guy got it working on androidforums. Sorry, no links for me yet.

Will a Sprint SGS3 work on Verizon?

I've seen a lot of threads about different devices on other networks, but I haven't been able to find an answer on this question. I've seen pictures of the back of Sprint SGS3s compared to VZW, AT&T, T-mobile, etc and I know it doesn't have a SIM card slot - but I've only seen this in reference to global capability. I also know the Verizon is locked, but obviously that is only important from going Verizon to a different carrier. How does this apply when going from a different carrier to VZW?
I have a company phone on Sprint, and a personal cell phone on Verizon. I just got a new phone on Verizon, but it isn't working (the screen doesn't turn on 95% of the time) and didn't get insurance on it. I do, however, have an upgrade available through my company Sprint phone. Sprint's service is awful in Phoenix, though - so I'm hoping to be able to get an SIII through Sprint but use it on my Verizon plan. Is this possible?
Thanks!

Are Verizon phones unlocked? New SIM not recognized.

I have been under the impression for a long time that Verizon phones are unlocked, and had a tech tell me this - contracts stay in effect, but phones are free to come and go. So I took my N7 (for which I pd full retail, no contract) to a prepaid carrier and was able to use it with their SIM for a couple of weeks. It took help from a tech to configure the APN settings, but things worked fine. I did get a constant message in the status bar: not a Verizon SIM. Today the phone will not work, even though it shows many 4G bars, and says: No SIM or SIM not recognized. This message pops up every time I try to dial. I called the prepaid carrier and they said they are sure that Verizon has locked the phone and I should call them to unlock it. (Right!)
I don't know if it's a coincidence, but this happened right after I ordered a cell extender which requires the purchase of its own SIM. At first I thought there must be some confusion involved with this, but tech said he was sure it was a Verizon lock. Any ideas or information? Thanks!
Yes, the Verizon N7 is carrier unlocked; however, this isn't necessarily a prerequisite to using a pre-paid carrier's service if they're already using the same CDMA frequencies (in which case, their most likely just "leasing" their service from Verizon and reselling it as their own - these companies are called MVNO's (Mobile Virtual Network Operators) and there are plenty of them out there).
What I think is most likely happening is that Verizon is temporarily deactivating your SIM card, as if it were a Verizon SIM, due to the fact that you're still using the Verizon Note7 firmware. You have a couple options here:
If you have another phone, and another SIM card, you can do like the rest of us are doing and reactivate the other phone with the other SIM and then pop it into your N7. This will restore service to your Note7 and release the "hold" on the previous SIM, so that you can repeat the process with that card next time Verizon does one of their sweeps (appears to be a weekly event). A pain in the ass? Yes. But, after doing this a few times, I've gotten the process down to about 5 minutes. I just need to make sure I have my spare phone (a Verizon Note 4) nearby wherever I am.
Because the N7 is carrier unlocked and is capable of operating on either CDMA networks (Verizon & Sprint) or GSM networks (T-Mobile & AT&T), you can flash another carrier's firmware (like T-Mobile) and use their pre-paid service, or the pre-paid service of a MVNO that operates on GSM (like Simple Mobile). I use T-Mobile as an example because I know that they are not... yet... disabling SIM Cards (temporary or otherwise), but I can't say, with certainty, that the other two are not either. I do know that all of them have pushed firmware updates to permanently disable the ability to charge the Note7, so, if you go this route, you want to make sure you flash the firmware released circa mid-late October and then do whatever is necessary to block all subsequent updates.
Hope this helps,
Matt

Thanks. It does help and that makes sense. What was odd was that I was still able to access internet (not wi-fi, but network showing 4 bars 4G). I got a new SIM today and when I popped it in, same thing. Are you saying I would have to activate the SIM on a second phone (currently N5 still with Verizon while I prepare to leave them) before putting it back in the N7? Just keep switching SIMs back and forth?

It's kind of a crappy solution, and one that I doubt will continue to work forever (or, at least until the N8 is released)... but yeah. That seems to be the only work aground right now.

Yes, and it's a whole crappy situation. I can accept the recall, but not the hotlining by Verizon. I have learned from this I will never buy a phone from a carrier again. Should have bought non-carrier specific directly from Samsung.
