Changing recents button to search on CM12 and CM13 - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy Note 3

I've stayed on CM11 because I dislike the virtual buttons of CM12 and CM13. I have "fat fingers" and the virtual buttons in CM11 make the bottom of the screen "wide" (tall?) enough that I don't hit two buttons and an app with my thumb.
CM12 and CM13 the button position that I use as "search," permanently remapped to "recent apps." I have no need of a dedicated recent apps button, as I use a long-press on the hardware home key for that.
Nothing I've been able to find online allows remapping that damned recents button back to "search." Trying to fuss with the inbuilt button manager only allows ADDING a search button, which adds clutter without functionality.
As I am able to homebuild CM11, I'm up-to-date with the security fixes, but within the next year or so, Google will be more or less forcing a move to Lollipop or Marshmallow by dropping support in the core "GApps" for 4.x base OS (i.e. JB and lower).
(I've managed to find workarounds for just about every other "issue" with 5.x and 6.x, but this one particular problem is stopping me in my tracks.)

Passionate Plea to All Developers - Menu Button Options

this is a Passionate Desperate Plea to all Developers. Please, Please, Please (in my culture the amount of times you say please infers the passion of the plea) include an option in the ROMS to remap and customize the way the menu function works in ICS.
after having used the Galaxy Nexus extensively i am fond of having my menu options on the action bar and am even willing to have my screen real estate reduced by the now infamous 3dots
all current mods move the menu button around the physical buttons but this still removes the action button on any ICS native apps, thereby defeating the purpose.
so my suggestion would be to have the following:
STOCK ICS with 3 Dots
Menu on Recent Apps
Menu on Hold Home
and have this as an option in all ROMS if possible including CM9, AOKP etc, for all ICS roms on all phones
Wrong section mate ...
please advise me on where i should put it
And also, no longer an issue, except maybe in AOSP-based ROMs because the new 4.0.4 Sense base has much better native functionality for reassignment of the 'Recent Apps' key with no affect on native apps.

Click to collapse
1. can be found in Cyanogen 9
2. the option is given by HTC on their newest base (2.05)
3. possible with older base and 3dotMOD...see in AROMA...with new base its on hold recent apps...
thanks ill check out a 2.0x ROM, downloading one as we speak. the thing is I saw it in the MIUI ROM as well. thought itw as native to ICS, let me see

[Q] Remap capacitive keys in AOSP ROMs?

Specifically, I want to change the recent apps key back to recent apps, instead of menu. I prefer the original layout over the Samsung/Legacy style pretty much every dev uses. It's too awkward for my liking, the recent apps button is being wasted as a rarely used menu key, and long pressing home for a feature I use more than pressing home is cumbersome. I don't really mind if I can't remap menu anywhere, as that'll be covered by the hidden PIE menu anyway.
And no, the solution for me isn't to switch to CM10. I have no plans to stop using Paranoid Android anytime soon.
Thanks for your help.
If you want to stick to PA I'm not sure how you can do that. But if you don't mind changing to ICJ, you can remap the capacitive keys. And you won't lose pie either as pie navigation is also included in ICJ.

Hardware Menu Button Remap CM10.2

So, I want my menu button to open up menus again, and not the "overflow" menu. What are my options? Do I have to re-install 10.2 and the 0813 gapps and prevent any of the google apps from updating by backing up their apks and resigning them with ZipSigner? Will the unofficially signed apps even work properly anymore? Is there any way to map the menu button to the "navigation drawer" / "hamburger button?" I've tried searching but haven't found any help.
The first time I tried to hit the button one handed was also the first time I really dropped my S3 (small hands). It finally put a crack in my bezel. I was so proud of that bezel! I know that I can swipe from the bezel to the right to open up the "navigation drawer," but I can only get this to work about a third of the time, and only in Google's own apps. Might as well be the charm bar in Win 8. None of the third party apps I use seem to incorporate this swiping feature either, which is why I'd rather enable the overflow three dot display, and remap the menu button. None of the options in the buttons menu in CM are anything I'd use. I just don't get it. They want to get rid of the menu button because devs hide everything there, but to facilitate it they hide everything off screen in a drawer that I have to use two hands to open?
I wish Google didn't dictate that the Action Bar and on-screen navigation controls are the way "things must be." Especially with no consideration to those of us on legacy devices. I rather like having buttons on the bottom of the phone that don't take up screen real estate. I'd like it even more if the buttons were physical like they were on my Evo 4G, and not capacitive. I even miss the old four button layout. I used all four of them all of the time. Why not have physical + per app customizable on screen buttons? Get the best of both worlds? "Because Matias Duarte has not deemed it so." Sounds like Jonathan Ive or Steven Sinofsky.... If I wanted to be told how to use my phone, I would have bought an iPhone or a Lumia....
On a side note, I am less than enthusiastic about the changes Google has been making with the apps. The fonts got bigger in everything, but especially annoyed me in the Play Store. Whitespace, WHITESPACE EVERYWHERE! So now I only see 5 apps at once, rather than the 8-9 that was in the ICS store. Why have a phone with a huge screen if we're going to make everything giant? And so many apps are following these "best practices." Then again, I detest mobile sites and set my useragent to desktop. I guess I just feel that if I'm carrying a computer in my pocket, it should feel like a computer.

Can I customize the capacitive buttons with root? How?

I know there is the "buttons" menu in settings and it gives some options for which button does what and button swap but I want more!
Like, long press the back button to kill an app (useful for closing the web browser, for instance, instead of hitting back a billion times or menu - close)
Or adding a menu button since many older apps don't always have a menu option on them anywhere and rely on that button.
I would love to swap the recents button with menu since I generally long press the home button for recents anyways but so far I can't seem to find an option to do so.
Can someone please help point me in the right direction? Thanks!
I just found this thread in search of the same solution. It seems like it's an Android level feature developers choose to include or not. My OnePlus one on 5.1 was the last time I've seen that menu, and I really want it back. It's so annoying to not be able to customize my buttons exactly how I like them, especially since that menu is something that's been in Android for so long. Feels like a step back.
Install All in one gestures app.
Don't be fooled by app's name, it does exactly what you ask and something more.

Hide or switch off Recent apps in LOS 18.1

I've installed Lineage OS 18.1 on Moto G7 after a year or so of experience of Resurrection Remix OS. Positively impressed with speed and smootheness of the LOS. But I'd really love to get reach to a couple more of settings and tweaks.
One of them is the list of recent apps appearing when the square bottom button is touched. The list quickly gets long and littered with all kinds of service apps you run once. Yes, there is a standard option at the end of the list 'Clear all'. But I'd prefer a cleaner experience without an obligation of a regular manual tidying up. Just a short list of really useful apps to call back: camera, dictionary, navigator, and some others on my choice. In RR OS there is a dedicated tab in the Settings where I could choose which apps are shown in the Recents and which are not. In LOS I just cannot find any way to arrange it. I could accept to sacrifice the Recents function as such. But everything I find in Settings -> Buttons is a long press on Recents, not even short press.
Could you please share the way to tweak the list of the apps to show in Recents, or an add-on which gives access to this option, or a simple environment variable to edit in some config file switching off Recents.
Thanks in advance
