From what I've heard neither the Pixel nor Pixel XL support quickcharge or adaptive fast charging. They use something called USB POWER DELIVERY for fast charging, this is the technology that allows generic USB-C chargers to output 100W of power when charging USB-C compatible devices like the new macbook pros or the Chromebook Pixel. So unless u use another charger that support USB power delivery you shouldn't be able to fast charge your Pixel phone.
It has been hit or miss for me. If I use an adaptive fast charger that came with a note7/s7edge I will always get the charging rapidly indicator but charging can be dreadfully slow to somewhat quick.
I am assuming your device will show "charging rapidly" with the Samsung chargers?
To fast charge with the pixel or Nexus phones it has to be a USB c to USB c cable with the adapter being a USB c one. Not USB c to a.
I get rapid charging from my Nexus 6 charger and a USB A to USB C cable. I don't believe it's as fast as the Pixel charger, but it works well enough.

As others have stated, the Pixel uses USB TYPE C specification with Power Delivery. It does not and is not compatible with any other type of proprietary fast, quick, rapid charging methods.
You should be able to get 5v 2.4A using the Pixel's cable or any proper cable A to C cable with the proper 56k ohm resister

That's what I am using and can go from 0 to 100 in just a little over 2 hours. Same time with note 7 charger and cable.
Seems pretty fast for me
I wonder why the device reports "charging rapidly" when using a Samsung adaptive fast charger?

Umm... USB Type C will charge at 3A, no?
Shouldn't it be 5V/3A for the Pixel / Pixel XL also?

Absolutely, USB C is designed to negotiate with the charger how much juice is sent. the pixel works at 5V 3A (15W) and up to 9V 2A (18W), Basically if the plug fits it'll get some sort of charge. There are loads of USB C chargers with PD, the spec goes up to 100W and any charger will provide any device with the maximum it or the device can handle (So a 100W charger will give 18W to the pixel and the Pixels 18W charger will give 18W to a laptop for example)
If you have a true USB-C 5V/3A charger now, it will work fine, but as stated it is not the BEST option. 5V/3A = 15W.
If you buy a USB-PD (Power Delivery) type C charger, it has the capability to charge the Pixel at 9V/2A = 18W, so a 20% faster charge... in a perfect world, instead of 0-50% power in 30 minutes, you'd get 0-50% in 24 minutes. BUT, we don't know how long the phone will charge at 18W. Hopefully to 50%, but it has to cut down current eventually just like all QC chargers, or else it'd damage the battery.
The charger included in the box is USB-PD compliant.

Great info. Now I wonder if the Tronsmart W2PTE will charge at 9V/2A...
http://www.tronsmart.com/tronsmart-w2pte-type-c-quick-charger-3.0-dual-ports-rapid-wall-charger
USB C port output:3.6V-6.5V/3.0A,6.5V-9V/2.0A,9V-12V/1.5A(MAX)
USB A port outpout:5V/2.4A(MAX)
Technically it has the ability to, but I wonder if it can.

My guess is no because that is relying on a QuickCharge handshake to occur between the device and charger. Pixels will use USB Power Delivery which is an entirely different specification. It'd be great if it does, but I highly doubt it.
It seems even the ones on Amazon that are PD units all are either 15w (5x3) or have the 9x2 spec but don't actually show it as addressable in handshake.
I just want to give someone my money and I am getting upset that I don't have anyone to give it to...
@bigblueshock It seems Tronsmart W2PTE not a 9v/2a PD charger, I saw Choetech has a 29w USB C PD charger
https://www.amazon.com/Charger-CHOETECH-Power-Delivery-MacBook/dp/B01HZ61WWQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1475906398&sr=8-1&keywords=choetech+29W+PD+charger
Specification:
Input: 100V-240V AC 50/60Hz 0.7A
Output: 5V3A/9V2A/14.5V2A
I may try this one
Great Phone, I am thinking to buy it.
uhh, QC3 supports both 5v3a and 9v2a. I use my QC3 charger with my Pixel C and it rapid charges.
The same will most likely be true for the pixel phones
I think it still doesn't work because the difference is in the protocol for handshake, not a limitation in the ranges of current.

Wouldn't it be nice if the phone could say what it was receiving and how it had negotiated? I've accumulated quite a few mains chargers, power banks and cigarette lighter adapters.
A QC2.0 PSU makes my Pixel XL say charging rapidly, but it doesn't say how rapid. Another mains charger said charging slowly, which was odd (you'd expect that from an unpowered USB hub) and others just say Charging.
How are you supposed to know what's what? The supplied PSU says Charging Rapidly, but clearly it's more rapid.
Even just putting it as an option in the developer menu would be good enough. It would then enable me to check all my various adapters and establish what does what.
Wouldn't it have been nice to just have one standard?!

There are special USB adapters that you plug between phone and charger that will tell you what it's using and what the voltage and amps are.
I'm seeing unexplainable results, like faster charging from my old Motorola Nexus 6 Turbo Charger than with the included Pixel charger....

But that doesn't actually MEAN anything. I had a bad car charger that would overheat easily over time. My Nexus 6P would say "charging rapidly" and Ampere would show 100mAh, charge completion time was over 3 hours, etc.
Google designed the phone for USB-PD, nothing else. QC 3.0 does work with this phone. Unless someone uses a USB power meter and posts solid numbers like mentioned in a previous post, people need to stop posting this ****.

Hi,
I have several car chargers that use Quick Charge 3.0. Would it be safe to charge the new Pixel 2 XL with those chargers, and would it provide fast charge?
Thanks!
It will charge but not at the same rate as the stock charger 9v/2a. It will slow charger the pixel fine assuming your charger is good and you are using a good Usb-a to usb-c cable.
Quick charge is a qualcomm proprietary charging method that the pixel doesn't use. If you want fast charging I would suggest finding a usb-if certified usb-c charger that does 9v/2a. Obviously, the one on the Google store that comes with the pixel should work.
One word of caution. If you follow Benson Leung and Nathan K. on Google+, you will see there are a ton of out-of-spec usb c chargers and cables on the market. That is why I suggest that you buy one that is usb-if certified. That should offer you some level of safety (though not always, I'm looking at you belkin and your 27w car charger with power delivery)

Yup. It's my understanding anything that goes from USB-A to USB-C, regardless of what kind of charger it is, will always charge at 1A or less.
Also make sure if you "have" to charge USB-A to USB-C, you don't use a "bad" cable. (see Bensen reviews)

My understanding is that you are referring to a cable that is wired for both data and charge. I have several "charge only" A to C cables that are wired different from data / charge cables. These charge my XL quite rapidly.
I believe quick charge 4.0 all also supports power delivery. But, I haven't found a 4.0 charger.

Unlikely that you'll get fastcharge from a-c as the fast charge only comes from Power Delivery (this is not the same as Qualcom's Quick Charge which usually has a usb -a connection on the charger). The only chargers I've seen that implement it are usb c to usb c (no -a connections on the charger). If there are any Power Delivery chargers that have a usb -a connection at the charger, they are rare as all the ones I've seen are -c only.
That's annoying as I had no problem with my pixel 1
Annoying inconsistencies.

I have noticed that it only charges using a C - C cable. I have an Aukey USB C car charger and it charges rapidly on the USB C port on that charger, but not the USB A port on the same charger.
This charger is also a QC 3.0 charger, and nothing mentioned about Power Delivery: http://a.co/aG7adl6
My conclusion is that it HAS to be a type C charger for it to go anything above 1.5a.
Annoyingly it's worse specification that the device that it replaced.

You should be able to connect it with that cable. The end that plugs into the laptop/PC is the standard USB type; it's the end that plugs into the phone that's USB-C.
The others are incorrect. The phone comes with a usb-c to usb-c cable. What you need for your regular usb ports is usb-c to usb-a. Such as https://www.amazon.com/AmazonBasics...sb+a+cable&dpPl=1&dpID=41wgZRjwXYL&ref=plSrch

Correct, unless the aftermarket charger supports USB-C power delivery. Qualcomm quick charge is not sufficient in this case.

What you're doing wrong is not spending the extra funds to get a proper charger. USB ports on a PC are limited to 500mAh, thus charging will take an extremely long time. Some laptops do have a USB port designed to output a higher amperage, but they don't output the minimum of 2 amps used in smartphone chargers from the last five years.
If you don't have a proper charger, get one.

Research the Power Delivery (PD) specification. Then research PD power banks. There are many that output > 30W but it's doubtful you could charge both devices rapidly at the same time... but the PD power bank would charge either device rapidly. If you really need to charge both devices at the maximum rate simultaneously, you would be better off with a capable PD wall charger. There is also a P2XL "Accessories" section here where you will find more information on cables, chargers and power banks.

Then use a USB-A to USB-C cable and accept the slow charging rate. Your laptop's USB power output is the limiting factor here, not the cable. You will need a PD charger (or power bank) to charge rapidly.
With USB-C still not as common as MicroUSB, are there any power banks with Power Delivery?

Absolutely. If you are in the market be sure you confirm the powerbank allows USB-C both input & output so you can use your PD wall charger to top it off. The first generation power banks only allowed PD output, and you had to use the slower microUSB to charge. I've got my eye on THIS ONE. Just waiting for a price drop. :good:

What iPad model do you have? Some of them support USB-PD for fast charging via USB Type C, but not all of them do. If it does support USB-PD fast charging, find a powerbank that supports it and you should have no issues. (Pixel 2 XL can use USB-PD as well)
Hi all, I'm hoping that someone much smarter here can help me. **My phone is at 50% battery while conducting these tests. I've tried 4 different usb cables and 4 different vehicles and 4 different usb car plugs (1amp, 3amp 2.5amp 30w) my P6P only charges at 800ma but fluctuates wildly from 40ma to 400ma to 250ma to 800ma. I have turned off adaptive battery and the such. no joy. I don't recall this issue with A12. I'd really prefer to not have to factory reset...but......
PS I have no issues with same cables attached to my wall charge station, which charges 5 devices @1.5amp each. My P6P shows a steady 1500ma.

I just need to get the 1.5amps I was getting before with the same setup as I was getting on A12 This is the charger I just bought hoping it would fix the sub 1amp charge rate I'm getting, Without getting 1 amp rate, my phone looses power while driving and using maps and such apps. This was not an issue with A12
Amps don't matter when you're still stuck at 5V.
It should work though. No point in buying a charger with only USB-A.
I had this issue Android 13 until Sept update even with USBC PD PPS 65W charger, phone was draining using maps. now no.
Also I do not believe that Pixel phone supports QC for quick charge so you might be lucky to get 1amp charging from USB A
