I have a small problem with my XL which is nonetheless driving me slowly insane..
As an ex-Samsung girl for a very long time, some of the sounds are deeply embedded in my brain. So my SMS and WhatsApp notification has been the Samsung "Harmonics" sound. I found it (and others) posted by a kind XDA chap. I created a 'Notifications' folder and put Harmonics & Whistle in there.
Then I selected Harmonics without problem for my notification sound in SMS and WhatsApp. For the next couple of texts, it works. Then the Pixel always, but always, reverts back to a built-in tone (specifically "Strum", for some reason). I change it again ...it changes back.
I've tried sourcing Harmonics elsewhere, Exactly the same thing happens. In fact any tone I put in the Notifications folder works only briefly and then reverts to the built in sound.
Changing my ring tone has worked just fine. Ditto my alarm sound. It's only notifications that won't "stick".
Anyone got any ideas?
I personally don't use any sounds for notifications, so I can't speak to mine sticking or not. I can confirm that I am using an MP3 ringtone (a portion of a song) that transferred from my Nexus 6p (even though I thought the transfer tool said it wouldn't copy ringtones) and it works fine.
What format is the sound file in? MP3, OGG? WAV?
All the sounds I tried were mp3. They do usually work once or twice but then revert to the Strum sound (which puzzles me even more, because you would think it would choose the default sound).
Consider changing the name of your favorite to Strum?

Weirdly, it seems to have started working - mostly. Basically, I just gave up. I left the notification as Harmony and it was sounding 'Strum'. And then it just started using Harmony after a day or two, but with a very occasional Strum! So weird. Baffled. But not going to touch anything now!

So I had a TP2 (from Telus) for approximately 2 months with the stock ROM. I put some custom ringtones on it, and set it up to play a sound and vibrate on incoming calls, incoming SMS, incoming e-mail.
When I first start the device, everything works fine for a while, however, after some period of time (varies) the audible alerts for SMS and e-mail stop working...still works for incoming calls (so it's not muted or anything).
Randomly, the vibrate feature will stop "working" as well, it won't completely stop working, but instead of a long vibrate, I get ONE vibrate (like you get when you push a key on the soft keyboard).
I upgraded to an EnergyROM WinMo6.5 ROM last night, and this afternoon this problem surfaced AGAIN.
Any solutions / thoughts?
Thanks
convert your sounds into another format.

What format?
All three (including the phone ringer, which always works) of the sounds-in-question are MP3s.
Try using WMA
though I must say my TP2 works fine with MP3 media as well.
same thing happens mine too. mostly ok but sometimes no sound from my tp2 or different ring tones. I have original rom
Nope. This is most likely a hardware issue, unless you are running a non-ATT device. The format has nothing to do with it; the device can actually play movie files (audio portion) without a single problem, even when on the storage card. It sounds like a hardware problem about the vibrate thing. But, that notification thing sounds pretty much software. Try with the stock sounds and see if it makes a difference then put the custom ones on main memory and try again.
Sometimes when receive incoming call, phone won't ring, just vibrate. That's happening randomly, sometimes it's ok for 2 days and then start, sometimes on every couple of calls, for 2-3 calls it's not ringing and then start to ring normally again... Of course, I'm not in silent mode, volume is set to max, when enter settings and select ringtone, it plays fine...
This start when I upgrade to Lollipop, on stock rom and custom roms, tried 4-5 roms, all Sense. I run RUU for couple of times, for clean start of new rom, my firmware is up to date, but it happens every time, so I think it is Lollipop problem, not rom.
Is anyone experienced this problem too, or know some solution?
Thanks.
So no one have this problem? For everyone phone rings fine every time?
Try to restart the phone. It will solve the problem for you. My wife's phone had same problem and that's what I did.
Yes, I restart the phone and the problem re-apear shortly, so that is not the solution.
m8 problem
I have the same fcking problem for over 2-3 months now and I think it's lollipop problem, it's very annoying every day I got dozens of missed calls ...i don't know what to do, did you find anything ?? Thanks
Did you set some ringtone which came with Lollipop, or some of yours personal ringtones?
I always use my ringtone, simple mp3 file, but I select one of pre-installed ringtone about 3 weeks ago and have no problem since. Don't know why, but it seems that Lollipop have some problems with some mp3 files. Those files plays perfectly well in any music app on phone, but if you set it like ringtone, sometimes ringing and sometimes not.
I found some program that helps to "convert files to Android-playable" so I convert my mp3 ringtone with that program (still mp3, but larger size) and will see if that helps.
I have done it today so must pass week or two to be sure if it helps or not, will post here.
So, my converted ringtone didn't work. Then I tried to put the mp3 file in to /system/media/audio/ringtones where the other ringtones are, but that didn't work either. I noticed that most of stock ringtones are in .flac format, so I converted my ringtone to .flac and it worked! My phone rings normally for 2 weeks now.
So, if anyone have problem with their custom ringtones, just convert them to .flac format with any sound converter on PC and that will be fine.
Ok I will do it your way, just to inform you, I did a factory reset for nothing same as before everything is working like, notification sound, message sound, music player but still no incoming sound, this is a really fcked up thing, it's nothing to repair the software is fcked up I guess,I am so dissapointed
Just convert your ringtone to .flac format with any free converter (ask Google), and it will be fine. For me, it's working over the month now.
The ringtone sound is fine now(tried it your way), but now I have another problem with mic, when someone tries to call me they can't hear me only on speaker mode, really mad now X(.
It might look silly, but try to make G calibration (Settings>Display & gestures>G-sensor calibration)
Are all these phones quite or is it just mine? Alarms are quiet, can barely hear ringtones and notifications. Vibration is weak as well, which causes me to miss calls while in pocket. Don't get me wrong, I love this phone. But my HTC ,10 had loud ringtones and mortifications.

Might try that.
Agreed, the external speaker volume is dismal at best. I could not even hear the phone ear piece until I flashed Elemental X which allows for ear piece gain... However no gain for external speakers yet.
i have recently had this problem as well. get it replaced. theyll send you a new one overnight if you got one through verizon. mines would be loud initially but after a while it was quite.
My problem is that there is one volume slider for both the ringtone and notification sounds. This is quite limiting (I feel like this was not linked in earlier versions so either they are taking features away or are simplifying things).
Does anyone have any magic tools to un-link these volumes so I can make my ringtone max and notification volume at 50%?

No, that is how stock android is. Other devices, like a Samsung may seperate them. But google leaves them linked by default.
As far as changing that... I really don't know. I leave my phone on vibrate all the time because I have a smart watch that vibrates on my wrists and I can check messages without even taking phone out of pocket.

Yes. I had an issue where if you continuously press the home button it would start out as a decent volume and then decrease. But when any type of audio would play it was super low.

I found a solution to this problem... Volume Butler! It's great, and does exactly what I need it to do (without even buying the "pro" version).

My sounds were all too low for me, i downloaded some iPhone MSG / alarm sounds as well as a Air horn sound and all those sound that i downloaded are much much louder then the default sounds
for me it seems that its something with the software because the speaker is very loud but, for example i download a song, listen to it and it plays very loud but if i set it as ringtone its very low when my phone rings. i was searching in the settings if there is anything to disable but cant find anything
Vibration power on this phone sucks.
I've had the 32gb and 128gb and they were both the same.
I setup the Moto X Pure 2015 for a friend last week.
I used it a half-day to ensure all was working fine.
And realized how much I really miss a proper vibration out of a phone.
Can't stand missing calls in loud places because I didn't notice the phone vibrate in my pocket.
As for ringtones - there are louder ones out there.
I attached a couple of loud ones in the zip.
I setup a Tasker profile to change to one or the other when I'm at parties or other loud places.

Thank you for posting them. The standard Pixel XL ringtones wouldn't wake up a light sleeper on the loudest setting, and most are tunes are kind of dreamy and sleepy. Its been so annoying finding replacement sounds, I installed Alarmy just to get louder sounds and of course soon after my network log starts spiking like crazy, with Alarmy opening multiple connections to facebook/google/etc sending off my data. Out of the entire Pixel XL forum your post was the only one I could find with links to sounds to download that I can load into the standard clock.
Many many tanks, now can get rid of another 3rd party crapware that slurps data like crazy.
Txt tone (notification tone) gets cut off constantly while using Verizon's "Message+"
Anybody else having problems with text tones getting cut off? I have tried several different notification tones and it seems to get cut off nearly every time I get a text. Sometimes it'll play half of the tone then stop and other times it'll play maybe 75% of the tone and stop. Have no clue what is going on, the notification tones are not corrupt or anything if I play them in another audio app it plays the whole thing just fine. I use Message+, does this have something to do with it? I can try another messaging app I suppose but I really like Message+.
Anybody else having similar issues?
Yeah, it's happening to me too on Outlook email notifications. At first I thought it was my custom tones, but it's doing it with the stock tones as well.

One thing I have noticed on the 3 so far is, for many of my apps, the notification sound I set for it never plays. I always get the default phone notification sound for those apps.
When I go in the app to check or change it, its still on the the notification sound I picked in the first place.
Why are certain apps, which allow you to pick a different sound, only playing default sound, while others that I changed are playing that changed sound? For instance, Ive been using TweetCaster for over 5 years now. Always had the same notification tone set for it and it played perfectly on every phone before the P3XL. The file is still in the Audio file for Notifications as it should it. It plays the sound when I click it. But when an update for TC comes through, it just plays the default notification sound in the phone setting.
EDIT: After much searching, I finally found a thread on Reddit that explained how to do it. It's a way deeper dive than just the usual pool I was used to...
