We received our Samsung Galaxy II phones a few days ago.
My wife had a Swiftkey and Swiftkey X keyboard apps in her Amazon appstore account. She installed Swiftkey X, and she was presented with an "update" that showed Swiftkey (not the X; apparently this is an issue with Amazon appstore based on Swiftkey site). Thinking that it was an update to the Swiftkey X, she apparently applied it, and immediately there were number of FC notices (she remembers seeing TWLauncher among them) and a spontaneous reboot of the phone. Then, she couldn't get online either through WiFi or 4G. At that point she gave the phone to me to fix it
Comparing her phone side by side with mine it is very clear that there's an issue with network connectivity. While mine flies through the pages, market downloads, etc. either on WiFi or 4G, hers get stock for 3-5 seconds before opening pages or sometimes just displays a "webpage cannot be found" or "connection error".
I went ahead and did a factory restore, but that seems to only delete user account, personal files, etc. if I understand it correctly. Moreover, the issue is still there after the restore. So, is there a way to restore the system files to stock as well? Can it be done without rooting, or does it require loading a fresh ROM?
Sorry for the lengthy message and thanks in advance!

Everything goes back to stock.
You need to either:
1. Root
2. Install CWM through ROM Manager
3. Flash this
Or:
1. ODIN flash CWM
2. Flash this

Dude. That's a half ass way, it doesn't take you to stock. First of all its deodexed.. Just a sec
This is the only proper way to go back to stock THIS IS IT RIGHT HERE

Thanks again for the replies. So, I'm going to have to root it and put a stock image back I gues... I was hoping that SII had a fail safe similar to Nook Color where you can easily go back to stock if something was not right.

Oh, sorry about that. I'm a newbie for the SII rooting/modding (did quite a bit with Nook Color), and I need to do some reading first.

Alright, I'm halfway through. The rooting process for the SII is little different than NC, but the principles are the same.
By the way, is it safe to assume that some conflict between SwiftKey and SwiftKey X caused the problem on her phone? The reason I ask is because I'd like to put SwiftKey X on my SII (it has multi-language support) and I dont want to deal with the same issue if it was the culprit.
I believe I did enough reading at this point
Since this doesn't involve rooting (now I understand it), I'd like to get an "OK" from the guru before proceeding with the following "as newbie as it gets" steps:
1. Install Odin (v1.85)
2. Install Kies for the recent GSII drivers
3. Make sure Windows recognizes the phone in ODIN (seeing <ID:0/004> Added!! in the message box)
4. Turn off the phone
5. Turn on the phone by holding both the Vol-up and Vol-down buttons and plug the USB cable in while still holding both buttons
6. Select volume up button to proceed to download mode
7. Start Odin
8. Check the PDA button in Odin and browse to “T989UVKID_HOME_SGH-T989user_CL594724_REV00.tar.md5” file
9. Click Start in Odin and let it flash
10. Once it completes and reboots…..
Is that it? At Step 10, it should boot into a 100% T-Mo stock, right? Just to be sure, I’ll perform a factory reset after that point and start all over with the user files, apps, etc.
Thanks in advance!
Sounds good. But if you look in the stickied threads top of this forum the drivers for our phone are posted. No need to install kies but that does work also

The "factory reset" you used IS the fail safe. The parts that "factory reset" doesn't remove is the part that won't be messed up unless you are rooted. So I don't even know how you touched /system etc without rooting...

Just finished flashing the stock image and everything worked as expected. This was also a good practice to learn how to restore it to stock in case something goes bad.

The issue was created after installing a 3rd party keyboard and -by accident- applying an update that was supposed to be for a slightly different version, which resulted in numerous force closes and random reboots immediately. I might be wrong here, but that indicates that more than just the user files were affected, since deleting just user files via factory reset didn't help the network problem. However, flashing the stock image -without rooting- took care of the problem.
Hello and happy new year ,
Οver three months I try to flash my mobile and always writes me the same error "unfortunately, samsung setupwizard has stopped" . Τhe device always hangs at the point where I choose system language on screen. To be able to work on my device should I have make it "flash" with version of android 2.3.6. Ι have tried to do "flash" with roms too, "pac-rom android 4.2.2" and "10.2 cyanogenmod", and always my device hangs at the point of the loading logo. I've done "flash" with these roms , as stated above, in my friend's phones ,same as mine, and has been correctly installed. The devices are not stuck like mine and working properly. Why my device is not working properly as the other? I am disappointed . I would like to help me :crying:

I have done what you say, my friend. When I "flash" the original version 4.1.2 and start my device by choosing the language system writes me the same message "unfortunately, samsung setupwizard has stopped" and hangs there
And something where I forgot to say, without knowing if this is an important point, is that the baseband version is xxxx , not as friend forbidden8 where he says i8160OXXMG2
Flash it with stock jb firmware and then go to Settings > Backup and reset > Factory data reset > scroll down and pick Format USB storage > then Reset device.
Format USB storage in case there's a malware in your phone.

I have an AT&T SM-N910A Note 4, currently on Lollipop 5.0.1. It is permanent unlocked via CODE and I'm using it outside the US with a foreign SIM with no problems.
Last April 14 ATT released a firmware update (OTA) to 5.0.1 with new:
Baseband Version: N910AUCU1COC4
Kernel Version: [email protected]#1
Build Number: LRX22C.N910AUCU1COC4
When i try to get that update via ">Settings>General>About Device> Software Updates"... it does NOTHING. Just display a text saying "No Firmware".
To me it seems I'm being ruled out from updates....
Does anyone knows why is this? Do I need to be a current AT&T customer to have updates?
IS THERE ANY PLACE TO FIND THE LATEST 5.0.1 FIRMWARE files to update from ODIN??
Thank you guys for your help!!

Happened to me too on the initial Lollipop update. Basically, the update was downloading, but would fail at install. Eventually, I got the "No Firmware" toast every time I tried to check for updates.
I had to go to Best Buy and they reflashed Kitkat (Because they didn't have the update yet). After that, the update check worked again and the update installed.
And as just stated, there is no 5.0.2 update. Only 2x 5.0.1 updates. First update was the Lollipop OS. The second was just a patch to correct some things.

It wasn't a factory reset. It was a reflash. I didn't lose any of my files, apps, or settings. It was like updating via OTA, except the Best Buy guy did it via USB and the update was the same exact firmware version that I already had.
I'm not even sure if Best Buy is an option for you, but using Odin to reflash the latest Kitkat firmware should do the same thing. I say this because I've done it on my Samsung tablet and I don't lose apps, settings or data. I do lose root though (easy to regain), but that won't matter with the n910a anyways.
Edit:
Using the firmware repair option in Kies may work too, but not 100% sure if it'll retain your data since I've never tried this before.

Just tried it but there is a warning about loosing all data if performing that.
Best Buy is not an option for me.
Unfortunately, flashing the update via Odin is your only option at this time. You will not be able to upgrade firmware via OTA, if not on an ATT network. There are apps that will allow you to backup and restore your call history and text messages without root. You can try copying your android data to your external storage card and copying the files back to the device after the firmware has been flashed.

Hey @thepinkpanter, just saw your post.
First, if you haven't already, remove the battery, boot into recovery mode and do a factory data reset, then reboot.
If you already tried that, then I would try flashing back to KK (NIE or NK3) both files can be found in the General Thread for the ATT N4. Use can use ODIN ver 3.0.7, 3.0.9 or 3.10.6, just follow the instructions for the specific ver you choose.
Let me know if you need further assistance..

You can flash NIE over OC4. I have done so a few times myself. Currently I'm using NK3.
It looks to me like your data partition is not being wiped. If I am remembering correctly, you do not get the android is updating screen on initial boot.

I would suggest selecting Nand Erase All, F. Reset Time, along with Auto Reboot in Odin on your next attempt. This will erase all of your partitions (system, data, etc) prior to flashing the ROM files. Unfortunately, this will erase all of the data on your internal storage card, but I believe this will fix the problem you're experiencing.
Do not select Re-Partition or EFS Clear, this will wipe your phones IMEl.

So.... About a month ago I got the first text message informing me of this battery downgrade... so I started investigating and came across a FB group who were using a version of Ez-Disabler to block updates. I successfully installed and blocked everything and then some... Fast forward to Thursday evening. While at work I needed to find something that was in my secured folder but my secured folder was disabled in the previous blocking session. So I decided to go into Ez-Disabler and enable the knox packages. I noticed there were some things enabled that I did not enable so upon trying to correct the issues I noticed they wouldn't disable. I wasn't sure what to do because my license wasn't being verified. So I removed Ez-Disabler and installed Package Disabler Pro. I was able to disable the things I needed but I think I might have accidentally disabled something I needed to have enabled to start up my phone because now it is stuck at the AT&T logo during start up and wont go past that when I try to turn it on. Then on top of it all... I can't turn it off after wards. I have to wait until the battery dies to try to put it in the hard reset menu.... I really don't want to lose whats on my phone. there are some things I need to save if possible..... Is there anything I can do?

This method creates the ability to debloat the Verizon GS7 (non-Edge Snapdragon) by modifying @jrkruse's method for the S7 edge posted here. Huge thanks to jrkruse for making the GS7 what it should be without massive bloat.
After my OP, he and @CVertigo1 evolved the method to fix the safetynet fail issues, so it now should work perfectly. I personally have not yet tried the updated method but will do so tomorrow. I'm copying instructions from the CVertigo1 thread here, but also keeping the old instructions below in post 1.
Knox counter is still 0x0, and I can confirm I have repeatedly used Samsung pay.
New CVertigo1 method:
CVertigo1 said:
Yet again, all thanks go to @jrkruse for this one. I have modified his zip to work on the Verizon S7 flat. The ROM is silky smooth since it uses the factory kernel. I'm going to tweak his instructions to work for the flat. I can confirm that SafetyNet passes using this method.
Download
ODIN v3.12.3.zip
Firmware bundle for the G930. Includes VZW and TMO firmware (G930VVRU4BQA2 and G930TUVU4BQB1) as well as engineering bootloader and stock boot_recovery.image
S7_SU_2_79_Root_Unroot_WO_Tweaks.zip
VZW_TMO_HYBRID_PLAYSTORE_BS_FREE_STOCK_V5_VZWS7FLAT.zip
Install Instructions From Any Build
Warning: This will wipe your device. Some of these instructions are redundant, but they will ensure that everything goes as planned. If you don't follow them to the T, don't complain.
1) Unzip Odin and the firmware bundle zips. Boot the phone into download mode and flash the G930T BL, AP, and CP files in Odin.
2) Don't bother logging into any accounts, as the phone will get wiped again. Copy the FlashFire.apk and VZW_TMO_HYBRID_PLAYSTORE_BS_FREE_STOCK_V5_VZWS7FLAT.zip to your SD card.
3) Shut off the phone and boot into download mode (volume down, home, and power). Flash the S7 Nougat root kernel in the AP slot in Odin. This file was in the firmware bundle.
4) When the phone reboots, unlock developer options and enable USB debugging. Unzip the S7_SU_2_79_Root_Unroot_WO_Tweaks.zip and run root.bat from your PC.
5) Now install FlashFire. Go into FlashFire settings and click option to allow flashing Bootloaders.
6) Now click flash firmware and chose AP_G930TUVU4BQB1_CL10376601_QB12449107_REV02_user_low_ship_MULTI_CERT_meta.tar.md5 SELECT ALL OF THE PARTIONS!!!
7) Now click install zip and choose VZW_TMO_HYBRID_PLAYSTORE_BS_FREE_STOCK_V5_VZWS7FLAT.zip Make sure to click mount system when FlashFire asks. View attachment 4073928
VERY IMPORTANT NOTE: MAKE SURE TO UNCHECK INJECT ROOT AFTER ADDING THE ZIP!!!!!!!- Thanks @dclutter1
8) The phone will restart and FlashFire will flash the firmware first(it will take a couple minutes to find and flash everything), then the Aroma installer will start.
9) In Aroma, select wipe data(DO NOT KEEP SU)
10) The phone will say custom status on first boot, but it goes away after setup and reboot.

Known issues:
Safety net check fails (so Venmo does not work)
Some sites are blocked. Turning on "data saver" in Chrome settings worked for me but not everyone
I found that I had to go into settings > applications > phone and explicitly choose the phone as my default application for calls before it would correctly create a notification when the phone rang.
Some slightly more varsity moves:
Keeping apps from your stock:
You can modify the .bat file to not remove any apps you want to keep.
For example, I wanted to keep the "always on" display, so I deleted these lines from the .bat file:
Code:
adb shell rm -r /system/priv-app/AODService_v20
You can also further delete apps. Essentially during steps 5 - 7 above, the phone is rooted. During that time you can remove other packages. (My advice would be to pull them to your computer so you can push them back if needed)
For instance, I wanted to remove Hangouts, the AOSP browser (I use Chrome) and VisualVoiceMail. So I repeated step 5, then did:
Code:
adb root
adb remount
adb pull /system/app/VisualVoicemail
adb shell rm -r /system/app/VisualVoicemail
adb reboot bootloader
Then repeat steps 9 - 11
Wipe CACHE, (NOT data)
Reboot
Cool, cant wait to walk a friend thru this.
Just got up and running on PlayStore, everything seems good except I can't get the call recording to work. Thanks for putting this together

Where is this .bat file?
Also, on jrkruse's thread, I only see a single ROM for download: VZW_TMO_HYBRID_PLAYSTORE_BS_FREE_STOCK_V2.zip. Am I missing something?
Edit: I found the Play Store ROM; it contains the .bat file. The new ROM in jrkruse's OP won't work with this method, I assume.

Yes It appears he updated his method to one that uses a different kind of temporary root as well as flashable files. I'll have to look at it and see if it's customizable the way the other one was, but it looks like you found the correct playstore ROM zip from before. Here is the other ROM. Sorry for the confusion.
Do we need to flash the Verizon modem? And if so would you have a flashable file? Thanks,
if i want to just put the tmobile firmware on my verizon phone and still use verizon service, do i just flash the tmobile firmware and then the verizon csc file and call it a day? not looking for the debloat and all that other stuff. just straight up tmobile firmware working on verizon.

I tried but the .zip kept failing so maybe I didn't create it right.... So ultimately I did not bother and my service seems just fine at the moment.

I think that would work (and wouldn't think you need to bother with the engineering bootloader steps either then) but to be honest it might be safer to ask jrkruse, because I don't deeply understand it - really just adapted his method for the S7 flat.
You speak of rebooting into recovery and wiping the cache. How exactly? All I seem to get is a dead robot on my screen.
Am I missing something?
Attempting this on a G930V, FWIW.

After which step?
At one point I did get a robot with a yellow triangle saying "no instructions" or something, but I waited a DL few minutes and pressed a few buttons and it booted into recovery.

Step 10.
Hmm, It seems that I wasn't holding the buttons down long enough.
If DL = Damn Long, then, yes, I agree.
OK, made it to step 15 and now I'm boned.
I had to install that ROM Control app manually as it didn't get pushed to the phone for some reason.
While attempting to follow along by clicking on IMS Settings, a toast message complains about no CSC binary or customer.xml
EDIT:
Hmm, I'll just wait a bit until you all get this sorted out I guess. In the meantime, it's back to stock for me.

If ROM control didn't install manually it's because the .bat file didn't execute correctly. Did you modify it? Did it successfully acquire root and execute all the commands all the way through to the "click to continue" prompt? OR did it give error messages along the way? (There will be a few during the remove steps because it's removing packages that only exist on the S7 edge, not flat.
I would try it again if you have the patience.
I didn't modify anything.
I only recall a few minor errors regarding removal of non-existent directories.
Yes, the script went through to the end.
Yes, the phone had root and the TMobile rom wouldn't let me forget it, lol.
It kept complaining the whole way through.

Basically this method temporarily roots the phone to modify the packages installed, removes a ton of them, and then reverts. So with this method, Knox counter is still 0x0, and I can confirm I have repeatedly used Samsung pay

Can you do me a huge favor and install 'Phone info *Samsung*' from the PlayStore and upload a screenshot of the firmware page. I replicated jrkruse method since he changed it, but swapped the boot.img for the S7 flat images. Everything works great, but I fail SafetyNet. I need to find out where I'm mixed up. If I can figure this out, then I believe I can make a simple zip to take care of everything else.

Yeah attached. I think I also have this problem as do those in the other thread, and that's why I get an error on device check with Venmo.
I thought you posted that Samsung Pay worked for you in the OP.

I followed the method in the OP, installed Play Store version. Samsung Pay is working for me.
