I don't use unlimited data anymore. Ever since I got a home wifi router, I use less than 200MB data a month.
I pay $75 a month for the cheapest, employer discounted plan with Sprint.
It seems like ATT would offer $40 (cheapest phone) + $20 (300MB data) - employer discount (I don't know how much). So, I'd be paying a much lower monthly charge with ATT.
Or so it seems. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
Plus, I'll be getting One X (s4) just after it was released, enjoying a new gen phone.
Your thoughts?

Sounds like the smarter move to just go with ATT. You'd save a few bucks, which add up over time. I'd do it if you don't need/use the unlimited data.
I think it makes sense for you to switch if your cancellation with Sprint isn't too painful. If there are multiple phones on the account, multiply the cancellation fees.
Im a data holic but if you really dont use a lot of data then its a no brainer

20 for 300mb of data? That's highway robbery. I hope you don't want to send or receive texts because that's another charge. ATT nickle and dime their customers to death. If you want cheap, and it's available, go with a prepay account or go with metropcs. From your explanation, it doesn't look like you're going to get insurance for your phone. You say you'll be getting a one x when you go there yet you don't want to use data on the network. What's the use of getting one of the top of the line phones with LTE when you want to only get the 300mb data per month option? To me, that doesn't make much sense. I'm assuming you have a e4gt now. Why don't you get a free basic phone from ATT and use your e4gt on wifi only? You can save another 20 bucks by not getting data on a free phone. I don't care what you do, that's your decision. Some people have left only to find out the grass isn't greener on the other side of the fence.
Also how is call service? My friend gets all data no phone. And even data is comparable to everyone else.

I was with att for 8 years and refuse to go back. Customer service is horrible and I always had dropped calls. Plus they nickel and dime you for everything they can.

Just remember the AT&T One X has a locked down bootloader. I worked for AT&T as a Field Technician for several years. I had to constantly use my personal phone because of AT&T's awful network.
Look into T-Mobile if you really need to change. They should save you some money.

Also, I currently have a BB through AT&T for work and the signal is so spotty I just use Exchange on my E4GT. My boss has an iPhone that constantly drops calls.
As far as T-mo goes, I had them for 8 years in KC and dropped 2 calls the whole time. Maybe look at an unlocked GNex for 399 and go with one of their pre-paid plans.

I firmly believe that the only reason Sprint's customer service was rated #1 is a 50/50 split between customer care lying to the customers and store reps guilt tripping customers into giving only perfect scores on surveys.
Seeing as Boost and Virgin will be picking up Sprint's WiMax network, I would see no reason to stay with Sprint were my service actually costing me anything. Funny that my phone is free yet I still catch myself thinking up ways to weasel out of my contract.

I've rarely done surveys. I block their phone number when they call too. I love when my gf is a smart ass towards them. Csr: Can you say I helped you resolve your issue today? Her: I don't know, I'll have to wait and see if it works now. I'll sometimes feel like being a troll and score them the lowest marks.
Sprint 3g in my area is some short not even 3g !

But seriously, if you aren't taking full advantage of the unlimited data and the competitors network in your area is better, I would definitely switch. Personally, my data speeds are so terrible I don't even bother using my phone off of Wifi. Yet my girlfriends AT&T SGS2 hauls ass pretty much everywhere she goes.

I said this all the time to my SAR, when he started being a **** about CSAT averages. It is easy to brag about it, when you are padding and stuffing the stats. It is such a snake oil salesman tactic, and I encouraged my customers to answer honestly. I will never beg for a five.

What is actually wrong with them doing this? You sign a contract for two years for unlimited data yea. Then after the two years are up they are not contractually obliged to let you keep it. They have so far as a gesture of good will. Obviously they are being greedy but they aren't doing anything wrong, unless they stop you having unlimited mid contract. If that's the case you would be able to cancel as they have not lived up to there end.

Signing the petition with your wallets at another carrier will do more harm than letting vzw know you don't like their business model. But the other carriers business models are the same. The big dent is made by dropping data on your service and letting sales reps and tech support know you won't get data back until the data portion of the business model changes.

It isn't a breach of contract, because right now it is just talk. The CFO is hardly a lawyer, so who knows what this shapes up as.
Then there is this little thing that data is a feature, not a contract plan. Its in writing that features are subject to change. You can change data plans any time and not affect your contract, but you cannot change voice plans because you are contractually obligated.
So it is a grey area, but I would say one of two things happens.
1. They wait until your contract is expired. You won't be able to activate any new phone without changing your data plan. This is the most likely course of action.
2. They let you opt-out without paying an ETF. I am not even sure they are required to do this.
Haha at signing the petition. Unlimited data is going away on all carriers. Verizon sees how the other carriers are raking in the profits from tiered data plans.
I wouldn't be that excited......sprint data speeds are HORRID! I'm lucky to break the 500k mark ANYWHERE in California. I've read in many places that the network is just as bad or worse in the rest of the country.
Well it had to come to an end at some point and time. Its sad our mobile internet cost as much or sometimes more than home internet. Tier plans are the wave of what carriers want you go over you pay more. Cash cow. Starbucks makes a killing off coffee sales but no one is signing a petition. I hate how they are acting but it is a free market system. If they chose to end something due to not making enough. As someone else said let your wallet do the talking. I went from att to T-Mobile and have not looked back. Cheaper plans by about 30 dollars a month adds up. That's revenue that the other guy is not getting anymore.

Verizon users are rightfully upset because they are being told they will pay the same, and get less with no choice of an alternative.
If Starbucks was the only drinkable coffee in town, and they told you they are going to charge venti prices for a tablespoon of coffee while being forced to pay for the tablespoon monthly...I would say that there would be a petition, along with some rioting
This petition is futile, but I understand why it is happening.
Carriers got you hooked on the good stuff for a good price. Now you get samples for full price. Either quit your addiction,find another bigtime supplier or the middle of the road solution, find a local supplier that meets your needs for the right price.
I am having to deal with this myself. The first step to quitting an addiction is admitting you have one. Lol. Petitioning your dealer that prices are too high just lets them know they got you hooked.

None of the wireless providers are getting rich. VZ's earnings grow at about 4% which is slightly above inflation. Some carriers are losing there a$$ by subsidizing excessively priced smartphones. Over time a few mergers will leave about 3 or so majors.
Curiosity mostly, but I plan on dumping verizon soon and getting on the prepaid train.
T-Mobile Prepaid.
My past experience with Pre-paid is the network signal is weaker, I use Cincinnati Bell wireless and they told me I had to get a contract plan to get better service. This was years ago, not sure how pre-paid is these days, would love to find out more anbout it.

That's a great post. I have a well paying job but even I can't justify 100+ bucks a month for verizon, much less the verizon gnex. I will probably be joining the GNex with straight talk. Even though I will miss verizon customer service, I think I can deal with paying half that.

Probably gonna drop the insurance. My contract is up in November and I am about to buy a GNex, so not sure what I'm gonna do.
T-Mobile: 2 lines, unlimited talk, text, and 5gb of data (before throttle) for both. Total after taxes comes to $124/month.

For large numbers of business phones (or large family plans), you're almost always better off with a shared/contract plan, unfortunately. When you need to manage multiple phones/upgrades/shared minutes, contract plans really help.
Has anyone had any experience with Pure Talk? I am out of luck with tmobile. AT&T is the only signal choice I get unfortunately.

i use straight talk at&t. i had t-mo postpaid & made the switch. in my area, (westchester, ny), straight talk at&t provides me with service in places t-mo didn't, however, data speeds are considerably slower for me. t-mo i consistently saw speeds averaging 10mbps/3mbps vs. straight talk at&t averaging around 3-5mbps/1-2mbps. the speeds are bearable & for $45/month (vs. $100 on t-mo), i really can't complain. good price, good service. have had no problems refilling on a month-to-month basis via their website.

There are a few reasons:
1) straight talk coverage isn't nearly as large as the coverage of AT&T
2) You don't want the AT&T network. There are plenty of areas where service X is better than AT&T.
I happen to live in an AT&T dead zone. And the international network basically only works on AT&T (unless you give up 3g for t-mobile)
3) Some people do do a lot of streaming and want LTE
4) AT&T doesn't give you a discount on plans if you are off contract,
So if you are going to be on AT&T anyway, you might as well have them help pay for the phone.
5) If you want repair/warranty work, it's much less hassle to buy it in a local store.
6) Local stores may let you try out a phone for 30 days, if you aren't sure.
7) Many people don't even know about straight talk
T-mobile has pay as you go plans which are cheaper than on-contract plans. Unfortunately the international note doesn't work on those plans.
If I didn't live in a dead zone, I would do simply mobile for sure. But I do, so I'm going to buy the t-mobile phone (in full),
and get the cheap monthly 4g plan. It's my cheapest option by far.

I'm waiting for the T-Mobile version because from what I've read it is in the international version. I guess we'll have more details once the phones are actually out there.
LOL, I alone pay $35 a month on AT&T under a family plan. Which only includes the stupid 2GB Data allowance and unlimited text. With very little shared minutes (I don't talk to much unless the recipient is on AT&T and or on a mobile phone. And weekends is free on voice.).

I am thinking of going to straight Talk myself. So I was going to buy a gsm phone and buy there sim card. I guess I am confused on which version of the note 2 I should get it know at&tt just opened new 4G in my area but I am sick of contracts and high prices. I am willing to pay 4-5 hundred usd and still save money over a two year period.
So does the note2 international version get released before the USA version?

I almost never go over the 100 minutes and I do keep an extra $10 on the account just in case I do go over and run into the 10 cents a minute after the 100 minutes are up but I've only had to dip into that a little bit once.
BTW the 'unlimited' data you will find in the fine print is the first 5GB is 4G, then thereafter you get throttled to slower speeds, but I still find 5GB is plenty enough for me.
Also, you can do wifi calling if you use a different app like Google Voice + GrooveIP. IIRC you do have to root also to keep it from deducting from your minutes though. I did it on my old phone but I haven't messed with it on the Note II yet because like I mentioned I just really don't talk that much.
Hotspot you can also do either with root and some finagling or if you don't mind a cord you can do cabled usb tether.
Sorry to disappoint you buddy, but a lot of people here including myself is been using this plan for a long time now. I've been using it myself for almost a year and half, so far I have used this plan with the galaxy s 2, Galaxy Note AT&T, Galaxy note T Mobile, and now Galaxy Note 2 T Mobile. It's a great plan for people that doesn't talk much on the phone hahahahaha.

For those who would rather not pay the full unsubsidized price upfront, couldn't they buy the Note2 for that T-Mobile in store price of $250 +$20/mo for 20 mo interest free (total $650 over ~20 months) with the no contract $49.99/mo plan (500 Whenever Minutes + unlimited data or $59.99/mo for no throttling if needed) & then just do this $30/mo plan thereafter if their use case supports it (or would the store let you immediately do it on that $250 +$20/mo for 20 mo interest free price)?
T-Mobile seems to offer more plan flexibility than the other carriers but they certainly did not mention any $30/mo plan to me when I was in their store..is it really only $30/mo total including taxes & fees?

The $250 down with $20/mo times 20 months=$650 for phone is only available thru the value plan which requires a 2 year contract. So you are locked into a contract and pay full price for the phone.
The $30 4g monthly plan unl data, text, and 100 min is a prepaid plan requiring no contract. You bring your own phone- any gsm will do. Better if it works on tmo 3g.
An there are no taxes or fees. If you buy thru calling mart, with the right discounts which are sent to you via email if you are on their customer list- you can get refils for $28.50/month!
Also this plan is only available online or thru walmart stores. T-mobile stores will not offer it to you. Strictly do it yourself online.

Why would I be disappointed?:victory: Don't you think more people would consider trying the Note 2 on T-Mobile if they knew this plan was available for the Note2?
If the coverage isn't acceptable, the Note 2 could still be returned for a full refund within 14 days right with no activation fee right?
Sounds like a low risk way to try T-Mobile..
Also can't users just move up to other T-Mobile off contract plans if this $30/mo total plan doesn't best support their use case?:good:

Thanks Ok she didn't mention that price required a 2 year contract (& was within a broader conversation of plans available outside of contracts).. well I guess if someone is unsure of how the Note2 on T-Mobile would work for them, they can could still get it for the above deal to test out for 14 days & return it for full refund to get out of that contract & then buy it online for full $650+tax if satisfied right?

Of course. It's a no-contract prepaid plan. Nothing keeping you from doing whatever you want. You could buy a Straight Talk sim and switch off between that and T-Mobile's $30 plan every month if you want.
BTW I'm on the $30 plan, bought the phone in store for $650. Best choice for me by far. The cost savings over 2 years will make the initial high price pay for itself several times over.
Also, don't completely discount T-Mobile stores. Some of them are greedy but mine had no problems activating the $30 plan. They even gave me the sim for free and had no problem adding insurance ($7) for me. My total in store was $649.99 + $30 + $7 + tax. Everything was set up in under 5 minutes. Maybe I just got lucky!

Wow that's fast thanks, just wanted to make sure there are no complications-fine print (the T-Mobile store didn't mention the $250+$20/mo for 20 months would involve contracts & seemed to rather laud that it was an interest free way to buy the Note2 unsubsidized in these days of low interest rates)
Do you think it would be best to call some local T-mobile stores to see if they'll do it before showing up or will they be more likely to do it impulsively (there is at least one T-Mobile close to a frequented shopping center locally here)?
I actually noticed the $7/mo insurance including theft, loss, accidental damage etc..anything we should be aware of besides the below (people have had good experiences with it?):

I'm not rooted on the Note II. I don't want to risk messing anything up for the LTE software update T-Mobile should hopefully push, eventually.
I was rooted on my last phone which was just a cheap Samsung Exhibit II that bought when I switched over from Virgin until I could get something better.

For what it's worth, I am running Solavei($49 unlimited everything including 4G) vs the $30 plan from T-Mobile (although I have the t-mobile sim, just in case). I am loving the coverage... and I am even more impressed with the download speeds. Attached a pic to show how good it is. (the 11mb speed is sitting in a dave and busters in columbia, MD, the slow 600k speed is sitting in the back corner of a pizza joint in columbia for lunch, with edge connectivity).
If you ask me, it's a better deal than the $30 plan.

It depends on your individual needs. I don't use much more than 100 min and if I need more, I have a little extra balance and just pay 10 cents per minute. 5gb of 4g data is good for me, then it switches to unl. at edge speeds. $20 savings for 12 months is $360- half the cost of the phone off contract! A much better deal for me than Solavei's $50/month

I just got done making a Loss claim with them about 2 weeks ago and they were VERY quick and the deductible was $130 and they shipped me a BRAND NEW Note 2 in it's original box w/all accessories included... Not too shabby.... Although seeing as the Note 2 just came out they def do not have any refurbs yet... I am sooooo glad I had it on my account cause I just paid almost $700 w/tax for the phone and I would much rather pay $130 rather then lose a brand new $700 phone! I woulda **** myself if I lost it with no recourse...
BTW: Their Monthly4g prepaid plans are through a different provider (insurance company) than their contract plans and I have heard of people having hassles with the other company but not through Assurance...
I use ensquared for my insurance. $58 a year. $75 deductible. 2 phones can be replaced. Covers loss, theft, accidents and the normal coverage. Hard to beat.

Is there a way to sign up for 2nd line under the $30 dollar plan and port my number to that 2nd line then cancel the 1st line?
I want to keep my same number.

I picked up A Note II Saturday off CL for a decent price. White too...all the stores had were the grey ones. I had preordered a sim activation kit from T-Mobile http://prepaid-phones.t-mobile.com/prepaid-phone/T-Mobile-Prepaid-SIM-Activation-Kit for .99 cents and then did the activation online when I got the phone. Smooth as silk and I am getting surprisingly good data speeds. 8-16MB

Good to read, so the deductible shouldn't be more than $130? I might not be as happy about getting a refurb in the future however. If it didn't cover theft, loss, accidental damage I wouldn't bother considering it but at $7/mo over T-Mobile competitive plans sounds like a more reasonable consideration to take some of the sting out of some unfortunate event.
I'm still somewhat debating the $30/mo prepaid for the Note2 which you point out uses a different insurer or some of their reasonable contract plans. I'm also considering a Nexus 4 as a second device which I'd likely do on this $30/mo prepaid plan likely without insurance considering its lower unit cost, are you planning on getting insurance for your Nexus 4?
Could you comment on your experiences with T-Mobile Vs your Verizon service? Thnx
