Question for those not on Verizon, who bought a Verizon device.
In Developer Options is "allow bootloader unlock" grayed out or available?

Not yet...I'm certain I'll get to tinkering in the near future but currently stock and locked. Also, never activated on VZW network, cash at BB then straight to Tmo SIM

Thank you very much. That's exactly the information I was looking for.
This is well known that Verizon variant is locked no matter the sim used.
Id unlock it now before they close the depixel8 unlock loophole

I got a Google pixel 2 xl from a friend of mine, and I'm trying to unlock the bootloader on the latest 8.1 Ota but no matter what I tried it does not work the option in dev is greyed out I also attempted commands from bootloader itself and still kept saying device already locked... Will I not be able to unlock the bootloader at all? I also factory reset afew times still nothing.
Is it a Verizon or Google device? If it's a Verizon device, then you may be out of luck. From what I've read, the bootloader cannot be unlocked on Verizon devices.

I have a dumb question. Do you have your SIM card in the phone and is it connected to the internet?

Enable developer options and check if you can turn on OEM unlocking. If you can, it's the Google edition. If you've already unlocked the bootloader using fastboot commands and you haven't installed Magisk, the toggle will be grayed out but it will be stuck in the on position.
AFAIK all Pixels bought outside of the Google online store, including devices bought in Google pop-up stores, are the Verizon version but YMMV

Target ones are Verizon hence locked bootloader
Wait!
I also had this problem, try a factory reset and without setting a passcode or a fingerprint! That solved it for me
I also disabled the Find my Phone thing from the security settings.

Good idea, since there was a bug mentioned in this article: https://www.androidpolice.com/2017/11/21/google-fixes-disabled-bootloader-unlock-pixel-2-phones/ about this.

Good info.
Does anyone know if the VZN Pixel (OG) would have Verizon apps installed? Is there no way to tell a Verizon Pixel from a Google store Pixel except for whether you can check OEM unlocking button?

The Google ones don't come with any installed Verizon apps. However, once you plug in a Verizon sim card, then you may get a couple after you reboot.

Appreciated.
Just to clarify, unless you install a Verizon SIM, then the Verizon apps are hidden?
I just got a notification to say operator lock has been removed, which is weird because EE policy is it not do it till after 6 months. Anyone else in the UK get this?
yes I can confirm same here strange
That's a SIM unlock, it shouldn't have anything to do with the bootloader.

Has everything to do with it, once the sim unlock is sent to the phone it allows the OEM Unlocking to be toggled, otherwise it is greyed out..

Interesting. It certainly doesn't work that way in the States with Verizon models.

I would toggle the OEM unlock and unlock the bootloader asap! You may just save yourself waiting 6 months and paying 10 quid.

I should but I cant be bothered to wipe the phone haha, Tbh I had my Pixel 2 XL stock for a year (even had it unlocked after 6 months) and just didnt feel the need to root/unlock it.
I have toggled it though so see what happens
Did you guys do a specific action which you think might have triggered the unlock? I am asking because I have a Pixel 3 XL locked to EE which I need to unlock but don't really want to wait 6 months. Thank you.
I did nothing but get a message from EE stating it was now unlocked

Same as above, I just got a notification saying it was unlocked
the only reasons I can think of is A) i did complain alot about delays B) my previous phones I have paid to have unlocked but never left the network so they assume I maybe travel alot which i dont lol C) its christmas and they love me
The unlock has just coincided with my contract with EE coming to a close....
Mine came from EE with the sim lock off ....
I could toggle the bootloader and I've had an O2 sim working in there
i got mine from Verizon and was already unlocked i am running it on T-Mobile network

Actually - carrier lock.
on non Verizon models (ie EE UK) Bootloader is locked DUE to the carrier (sim) lock
once the sim lock is gone, then the Bootloader lock is gone

Use the Google backup and it will restore everything you had setup your phone except for downloads

Third party "IMEI Unlocker", shouldn't be that expensive for Pixels.
Any chances I could unlock this phone? Is it impossible? I've seen some websites that claim to do it but most of them look like scams.
if you find a good service please let me know)
my motorola does not receive a message to enter the network unlock code(((
...i just wondering if it is rootable? ...any one unlocked bootloader?
Total wireless and tracfone variants are not bootloader unlockable. Never will be unless a exploit shows

Let's hope a root exploit that doesn't require an unlocked bootloader appears then, that sucks and I wish I had known before I purchased mine
I found a workaround that let me activate it on AT&T Prepaid (and presumably the rest of AT&T), I will also see if I can try to get it working on Verizon as they have the best coverage in my area

Hello friends! Does anyone know the ways to unlock this phone from T-mobile carrier? Maybe somebody works at T-mobile who can help? Would happily donate.

Thanks. Of course I know that. Although the device is not paid off and not 40 days on the network. Has to be a back door unlocking. Anyone?

I bought my phone from Verizon and OEM Unlock is grayed out. Is there a method to make this active? Do I need to switch carriers? Do I call Verizon and ask for something specific? Am I screwed? From what I've read, I feel like I'm screwed.

There's nothing that can be done if you purchased a Verizon model except return it if you can and get an unlocked/non-Verizon model.

Okay, thanks.
Huh, I hadn't thought of that, switching carriers and getting unlocked. I'm taking my family to T-Mobile this weekend. I just cannot afford Verizon anymore in this economy.
I had a phone unlocked previously (going from T-Mo to Verizon) and it required the device to be paid off and then a phone call to the carrier before the option was available. I'd recommend a quick call/chat with Verizon, I'm pretty sure there is no reason you can't unlock the device as long as it is paid off.
Verizon does not link their SIM unlocks to OEM unlocks. There is no conversation to have with them.

What @LLStarks said. Verizon devices simply cannot be bootloader unlocked.
