Very slow charging using portable powerbank - Google Pixel XL Questions & Answers

I have a zendure a2 which used to charge my exynos note 7 extreme quickly but is painfully slow on the pixel xl. (Over 3 hours). Any ideas how to speed this up?

Easy, get portable battery that supports USB-PD. The battery that you have doesn't even appear to support QC, much less USB-PD. I wouldn't expect that battery to charge a Pixel at anything above 5W ([email protected]), maybe even less. THe Pixel is designed for fast charging via USB-PD spec chargers. It's still undetermined how the Pixel will react to QC chargers, though it is arguably not designed for them.
Here's the list from Benson Leung and others that catalogs what chargers have been found to work and which ones haven't.

Charging Time

Greetings,
Trying to find the charging time for the pixel c. Does it ship with the 60W type C charger on the google store? Or the 15 or the 22.5?
Whether it ships with 60W, will it charge at 60W?
34.2 WHr battery would be topped off in a half hour or so at 60W, just looking for any details those with the devices have. Not specifically interested in the generic amazon charger discussion just yet
In germany it gets shipped with the 15W one (5V at 3A) and it takes ages...but as I wanted to get some more external stuff, no harm done.
pixel c can use a USB PD charger (like the chromebook pixel charger) to charge faster at 24W (12V @ 2A). The only other USB PD charger I know of is the MacBook charger (29W), but not sure if it will fast charge the Pixel C as it uses non-standard profiles and I haven't been able to determine if it will also support standard PD profiles. I'm pretty sure it will charge the Pixel, but maybe not at the 24W speed.
This is the one I was curious about https://store.google.com/product/universal_type_c_60w_charger
Of course it states a lot of compatibility, but I can't quite figure out where it is intended to be used. If only the Chromebook Pixel uses 60W or if any of the other stuff like the Pixel C can go higher. Thanks for any advice
Even 15W should get the job done in a couple hours
The Pixel C help forum says "Charge the battery on your Pixel C by plugging a power adapter into the USB Type-C port on the left side of the tablet. We recommend using the charger that came with your Pixel C."
As the device comes with the 15w charger, this takes about 3.5 hours
I can't find any information on which Power Delivery Profiles it supports, I asked Google support if it will use anything other than Profile 1.
Google engineer Benson Leung has stated that with the 60w charger the pixel c will negotiate to a 12v, 2a charging speed

That's odd, 15W for 3.5 hours should charge a 52.5 Whr battery, but the c battery is smaller. At least the 60W charger will go to 24W, which should get the job done in less than two hours

From my testing, I see the charge cycle current skipping around as low as 1.8A and no higher than 2.8A, averaging at 2.2A. it could be the application, but this falls in line with my observed charge times.
Compared to my Nexus 6P which shows more stable current draw at ~2.8A to 3A.
I'd be interested to find what others are seeing for comparison

If I always charge my Pixel XL with a 29w USB C OEM charger, what will happen?

If I always charge my Pixel XL with a 29w USB C OEM charger, what will happen? Will it fire?
Posted in wrong thread. This needs to be moved to the Q&A.
You'll always have a full battery..?
it appears to charge slower than the Pixel's charger

I have some more reading for you, so even if the charger happened to output only 29w, your phone will not pull more than 18w.
Quote from an article testing this with the nexus 5x: http://www.anandtech.com/show/9742/the-google-nexus-5x-review/5
I measured the charge time in three different circumstances with the Nexus 5X. The first was using the included 15W charger, the second was using the Chromebook Pixel's 60W charger, and the third was an ASUS 18W Quick Charge 2.0 charger with a Type-A to Type-C cable. Both the Pixel's and the included LG charger actually took the same amount of time, so it doesn't look like the phone will draw above the 5V 3A output of the included charger. As for the ASUS 18W charger, it also took about 1.33hrs. Even though the phone isn't explicitly advertised as supporting Qualcomm Quick Charge, it will draw above your standard 5W if your charger supports it. 1.33hrs is the best charge time I've seen so far as well, partially owing to the fact that the battery isn't as big as some other larger devices.

So the nexus 5x caps at 15w, the Pixel XL supports up to 18w, that's the only difference there.

Small USB-C Battery???

So, I'm getting the Pixel 2 XL...
I like to carry a battery in my pocket that can give me a nice boost in case I get stuck somewhere without having to carry a charger and cable.
I found this battery that has a built in cable and includes a Micro USB to USB-C adapter that could be easy to loose: https://smile.amazon.com/GMYLE-5000...coding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=CTWBCR614AGQNFHAH9AY
Does anyone know of any other small batteries that have an integrated USB-C cable?
Thanks!
Do some research on the phrase "Power Delivery" . That is the attribute you want the battery to have in order to utilize your phone's fast re-charging capability...

I'm not actually concerned about fast charging. Just trying to find a small pocket friendly battery with a built in USB-C cable.

You could just carry any USB battery then, along with a USB-A to USB-C cable, especially if you don't care about the charge speed

there's an anker compact 13000mAh that has a USB-C port. i would not worry about a built-in cable to the charger as that can severely impact on longevity.. get a nice battery and use your own cable.
i ordered this

That looks promising. Any idea about case compatibility? I'm concerned that the connector may not be long enough to clear a case.
I agree with someone's post about built-in cables. They can go bad and then you're screwed. I ordered this one.

Has anyone found one that will be compatible with fast charging for the Pixel 2 XL? I coach high school basketball and some of the schools we go to are spotty for coverage which kills my phone battery when it's searching constantly. I'd like something that I could charge it while I'm sitting on bus rides and it fast charges for an hour. Thanks!

Any battery packs that support Power Delivery (PD) will be compatible with the fast charging for the Pixel 2 XL. You can find several through Amazon in varying sizes.

I admit, I like the original poster, am having a hard time finding a small PD compatible battery. Most of what I see, I wouldn't consider pocket size.

Small ones are tough to find because PD is relatively new and right now is more prevalent in larger devices such as laptops that would require a bigger battery pack. But more options are on the way.

The Aukey I posted is 15w which isn't PD 18w but it should be close enough. I'll definitely compare it to the included charger.

I can vouch for that one. I got it during my trip to Japan recently. Worked great for my N6P!
The Amazon Basics unit has worked quite well for me.

So I FINALLY got to test my Aukey 10500 mAh Power Bank. Reason it took so long is that the battery life for the Pixel 2 XL has been so good I have never had to use the Power Bank on the go. LOL. I had to make an effort to use it at home instead of the stock charger.
Anyway here's my review:
Charging test times and percentages:
Start - 10%
30 minutes - 48% (Interestingly faster than I've gotten with OEM charger)
60 minutes - 79%
75 minutes - 87%
90 minutes - 92%
105 minutes - 95%
Pros:
- Charges my #Pixel2XL as fast as the stock charger.
- USB-C is output AND input so Power Bank itself can be fast charged.
- Pocketable yet can probably charge my phone 2.5 times.
- Includes a nice protector sleeve
Cons:
- Only comes with a 2 ft. USB-A to USB-C cable. I switched it with a spare USB-A to Micro USB if I have to charge non-C devices.
- Need your own USB-C to USB-C cable to get the most of it. Using my previous #Nexus5X cable which works but isn't very compact at 3ft. 3 inches.
- Not Power Delivery so you only get 5v/3a charging.
- At $29.99, it's pricey compared to comparable battery banks of the same capacity.
Conclusion:
Still worth it if you have a USB-C device. There aren't many quality USB-C battery banks that are both input/output AND compact If they are around 10k mAh, they're only input USB-C. If they're input/output, they're most like 20k mAh.
This is what I use. I can get 3 charges on my Pixel from it. Not to mention headphone charges too.

I've been using the same one from RavPower. I had gotten it a few months before getting the Pixel 2 XL. I fly frequently (typically out of town most weeks -- Mon to Thu routine), and I had found the 120v outlets on planes to be inconsistent, sometimes painful to find (as in down under the front of your seat and impossible to see once you're sitting), so I took to carrying a battery with me to provide extra power when flying.
This model turns out to be perfect for the Pixel 2 (and XL). The phone acknowledges immediately that it's "charging rapidly", and it in fact is doing so. I'll typically get on the plane after a full day of work, plug my P2XL into the battery's USB C connection (using an official Google USB-C to USB-C cable), fire up my bluetooth headphones, switch on airplane mode (and then reactivate bluetooth), listen to Google Play Music and do crossword puzzles (and/or sleep) for the next 2 or 3 hours on the plane. When I arrive, my phone is fully charged, and the battery only seems to be depleted about 20% to 25%.
At a hotel and sometimes at home, If I don't want to deal with two charging wall warts, I can plug the battery into the wall to charge using the QC 3.0 charging input and a QC 3.0 compatible wall wart (I've got a few left over from all the Droid Turbo 2's we had in the house until recently) so the battery charges at top speed, and simultaneously use a USB-C to USB-C straight into the P2XL. The battery and the phone both charge simultaneously. I haven't time this versus using separate wall warts, but all in all this has proven to be convenient -- and it works.
Excellent battery. Highly functional, and holds a pretty huge charge.
i recommend the 10000mah xiaomi type c one - really love it and it's aluminum design stands out as well

can i use samsung fast charger for google pixel 2xl

hey guy, I bought a pixel 2XL last 2 weeks and I didnot have fast charge adapter of google so i used adaptive fast charging of samsung. Is it OK? because when i took that phone, i checked it have 3200mAh and after two weeks, now it have 3150 mAh on battery. I want to know that pixel 2xl fast charging is possible with Samsung fast charger
If I recall correctly is not compatible, you may not charge at low speeds but I highly doubt it's using fast charge. The Pixel 2 XL uses USB C Power Delivery 2.0 for fast charging, most Samsung phones use propietary Qualcomm's Quick Charge technologies which are not compatible between them.
I've used a generic fast charge charging block with my 2XL and I get the "fastcharging" notification, so I'd presume it would work.
Don't ever use any other adapter that didn't support for Power Delivery. It will broke the charging port or some IC power, anything like that. Just saying. Better take 3rd party like anker or aukey that support PD.

Where to buy an extra OEM charger

I am looking to purchase an extra 18W charger, North American variant.
Is it available for purchase anywhere?
The only 18W charger I could find on Asus' store mentions being a notebook charger.
But it appears to be identical.
Having used OnePlus phones, I do miss how easy it was to purchase accessories on their website...
Thanks
Any QC3/QC4 charger will be ok.

Whats. The difference in quick charge 3 and 4 as far as speeds? The 5z had a 18w qc3 charger and the Zenfone 6 has a 18w qc4 charger..would the qc3 charge slower ?

I guess the original charger will be faster. Can you try and compare it?
I compared the two.
Note, that, presumably, because the OEM charger does not go up the maximum 20V of QC4 (only 9V) it is not actually a certified QC4 charger, despite using the standard.
Also, the power rating for QC4 isn't actually higher than QC3, it merely has finer voltage control, allowing for better efficiency.
Sidenote, funnily enough, my QC3 charger is two thirds the size of the ASUS downgraded QC4 charger...
I used ampere to measure current at 50% charge.
That said, I used a QC3 charger from my previous Mi Max 2, it definitely got picked up by the Zenfone 6, showing the two plusses in the battery icon. It reached a max current of 2.5A
The OEM charger reached a stable 3A.
A difference is certainly there, but my guess is it won't actually be THAT significant in the real world. Personally I always use two chargers, the OEM for fast topping up, when needed. And another really "crappy" (0.8A smartwatch charger) for overnight charging so that the majority of the charging I do stresses the battery as little as possible. No matter what Qualcomm likes to tell you, fast charging definitely shortens the lifespan of a battery, so while convenient, it's good to do it as little as possible.
If you REALLY want the fastest possible results, try and find a QC4 charger. Only a few actually exist to buy right now.
Otherwise you can get a QC3 charger, there are TONS of those, and you can actually get the pretty cheap too. You'll only lose 0.5A anyway.
You could probably also use a USB PD 3.0 charger, as QC4 is able to negotiate voltages with it as if it were a fully supported QC charger.
Edit. Tried charging with both from 55% to 71% (It just happened to be where I was at with one charger, then used a battery drainer to do the exact same charge).
The QC3 charger was one minute slower at 16 minutes, while the OEM did it in 15 minutes.
