Used AT&T Galaxy Note 5 lag - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note5

Just purchased a used AT&T Note 5 from Swappa and the device is extremely laggy. I am coming from a Snapdragon Note 4 (and a Galaxy S5 before). My previous devices ran very smoothly and very rarely exhibited any lag. The lag is evident when typing, regardless of keyboard, browsing, regardless of browser, and really anywhere.
I was worried I purchased a fake but CPU-Z says it's the Exynos 7420. Also ran 3D Mark benchmark and it scored similarly to other Note 5's. I ended up factory resetting again but it didn't help. Cache cleared and also accessed Developer menu and removed all animations to no avail. On Android 6.0.1 and security update from August. Any help appreciated.

You could try booting in safe mode and see if the lag disappears and then try to narrow down what could be causing it ,if by some chance it disappears.

Thank you for the reply. It was definitely stuttering in safe mode, though there was a big improvement with just the keyboard. I'm returning the phone. Not sure what it is but something is wrong here. My wife has the Galaxy S6 Active with the exact same CPU and GPU and it runs quite smoothly.

Update: returned the malfunctioning Note 5 for another used one. This one is everything I was expecting from the 5 and more. Couldn't be happier.

Thinking I May Return My Tab 3 8"

I'm pretty disappointed with the Tab 3. Seems very slow/laggy. In addition, there is zero development on XDA for the tab 3. I know this just came out in the US, but it has been out for months worldwide. I've had this tablet for a couple weeks, so it's not just a first impression at this point.....
Currently, very unstable root and recovery. No custom roms. No way to install scripts/intd.
I've had a Galaxy 3 phone for about a year and love it. My phone runs circles around the Tab 3 in terms of responsiveness, processing......pretty much everything actually.
Am I getting a unique experience with my Tab or is everyone noticing the slow, dragging, instability of this tab? Size and screen are great, but do not outweigh the performance issues in my book.
Anyone else returned/exchanged their Tab 3? If so, what did you return it for? Thinking about going w/ the new Nexus 7, but there are a lot of options out there....please help!!!!!!
Weird. I had the nexus 7 2, the note 8, and now the tab 3 8. I don't think the tab is slow at all. Granted I don't play games, but overall I think its quite responsive and solid all around.
But I've seen a few complaints about how awful it is so it seems people have vastly different experiences.
Did it get slower over time? What are you doing when it lags? Did you install a ton of weird stuff?

Not at all. I don't play games on it or anything that requires heavy cpu usage. Just basic navigation is very slow. Is your tab rooted?

Yeah I wish I could return mine at this point the asus memo 7 hd seems like a much better choice for 50 less than this thing.

I owned a Nexus-7 2013.. Took it back on the 15th day.. (Walmart) They're a lot of issues going on with the N7.. GPS being the main one.. And there are some bad ones out in the field.. So be warned. I was lucky and got a good one, but it just did not justify the price (32 Gb) $294.00 out the door.. for the size of the Tablet for me.. I also own an iPad Mini.. and the 7" Screen of the N7 just was not cutting it for me after being exposed to the 8" 4:3 Screen of the iPad Mini for the last year or so.. The N7 just seem too small.. lots of development for it.. but for me they were the same ROMs I was running on my recently sold Galaxy Note.. so they were Quite Boring and offered nothing new. Then I spotted this Tablet and the Beautiful Saturated Colors and it's 8" Screen won me over on 1st sight.. You got a bad Tablet.. You should just do a Factory Reset Wipe everything and go back to how the Tablet was when it came out of the box. if it's still laggy.. Return it and try another Tab 3 8.0 or something else. Mine was fast out of the box .. is now rooted and still smokes.. have you tried a different launcher? have you gone into developer options and adjusted your animations for faster response...?

I think this is about the Tab 3 "8.0" but you are correct... the Asus would be a better choice when comparing to the Tab 3 7.0.. IMO..
Sell what you got for $150.00... Then buy the Asus.
You are still cutting someone a deal if your unit is still in "Like New" Condition..
Speed
Mine is rooted and still is quite responsive.
Speed wise it was not as fast as the Note 8.0 but it is only dual core!
Ran Antutu on Note 8.0 and tab 3 before buying tab 3 8.0
note was 16,000 and tab 12,000
Where as my mtk6569 Note 5.5' clone came in at 16,138.
my old mtk6575 was around 9,000 from memory. But it has gone to the gods RIP.

This is potentially misleading. It's the same clock rate processor. For many tasks the Tab 8 is just as fast as the Note 8. Exactly the same speed.
Where a quad core will shine over a dual core is when you're trying to do lots of stuff at once. The main area I noticed a difference is something like loading a huge web page and trying to scroll while it's still loading. Lots of stuff happening at the same time there so more processors makes a clear difference.
But for basic, one at a time tasks where there's not much parallelism to be found, there isn't much noticeable performance difference.
I don't know if the '8 is that much different, but my tab 3 10.1 is among the speediest i' ve ever used(tablets)

Thinking about the Note 4

Ever since the Note 4 was announced, even before then I was always interested in wanting to upgrade to it. especially since it would be a big step up from the Note 2 which I currently own. Spec wise and look wise the phone looks great but after going to the Verizon store and playing around with it I started leaning towards not getting for the sole purpose of how bad the phone was lagging. I am not willing to deal with lag for another 2 years especially with the lag on the note 2 (home button lag is annoying). Maybe the floor model was acting up but in all honesty after owning the phone for at least a week, do you notice some lag?
No lag it's most powerful phone on market atm.
I actually have run this one constantly with multi window open. I have have done that continuously with any of the previous 3 note versions I have had. The only lag I get is sheet a full day, and not closing out any of the apps that I have had open all day. Every now and then, yes, I may get a delay. But thats not very often at all. But, once I close all the tasks, it's good to go again. It really is a fast device.
I also hesitated to upgrade to the 3,but this version really is a major step forward for the series. I would even think twice based on the phones at the stores. I don't know what they do to those phones, but they always seem glitch ridden to me. But no lag at all here.
Sent from my SM-N910V using Tapatalk
There is lag on this device and if anyone says different they're full of it or they've become use to Crapwizz. Having said that the lag is minimal but definitely noticeable. I currently own Note 4 and Nexus 6. Nexus 6 hums compared to Note
Little to no lag at all only lag I notice is for some reason when u hit the recent aoos button other than that especially coming from a note 2,this thing flies. Touchwiz has actually improved a lot recently
buy first. think later
I'm not having any lag, it's fast as hell...remember on anything mass produced there is about 10 percent defective. Just saying...
In real world use there really is no lag that I can see...probably side by side with a Nexus 6, the N6 will be slightly faster but unless you are carrying both around all the time testing it, you won't notice the Note 4 being slow. It is much faster than my note 2 I can tell you that.

[Q] 2014 - is it really "sluggish?"

I am interested in upgrading from a 2012 to a 2014 edition.
Can some of you please comment on reviews that say there is "sluggish" performance with the 2014 (I would get a 600 wifi model).
Also - is there a performance difference between the 16GB and 32GB models.
I would use the expansion slot.
The only sluggish thing I've found with my wifi only 32g model is waking up. It takes a few seconds, maybe 2 or 3, to wake which is slower than my previous tablet. But once it wakes up, it's a great tablet. And if you use the S Pen feature, nothing comes close.
From what I understand, the sluggishness you've read about was from the version of Android the Note launched with, or perhaps a first update. I got mine after the first few updates and I've never experienced the stuttering the reviews talked about.
I've had mine for 7 or 8 months and I still love it!
I bought note 2014 around 8 months ago, i use it everyday, and it doesn't feel smooth but its powerful, its hard to explain for example:
My friends same year nexus feels smoother in menu ,but demanding games which lags in his device works good on mine, also note has really fancy long interface animations for example if you slide from one screen to another that sliding animation is long and it feels slow, but you can go to dev options (without rooting) and make it play twice faster.
Also if you don't plan to play with rooting and roms, don't forget Samsung forgets about their devices in 1year or two, device is now on android 4.2.2 i think , and it can be last official update.
all in all it doesnt feel perfect and maybe now where is better options for similar price i don't know but when i bought it friends said its slow and blah blah , and at the moment i can run every game i want and a lot off my friends with similar age devices sits where and enjoys their smooth screen unlocking animations.
edit:
pay attention that note WiFi is slower it has different cpu then lte version

Scrolling smoothness

Some phones exhibit choppy scrolling, especially when navigating long web pages when multiple apps are running in the background. Rate this thread to express how you smooth scrolling feels on the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 under such conditions. A higher rating indicates that scrolling is always buttery smooth, even when you're reading a 10,000 word article on "how to kiss a girl".
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
The Note 7 has the same amount of lag as every Samsung device. It'll never go away. We learn to deal with it, even though it still disappoints me year after year.

Agreed. Not nearly as smooth as my year old Nexus 6P.
You guys are complaining about the qualcomm version.
Over here with an SM-N930F (Exynos) and can't complain. Very smooth scrolling performance.
Deliberately opened a long thread from here on xda using Samsung browser (NOT CHROME) and it scrolls perfect even with music playing in the background while downloading a file.
souds diapointing
I can confirm the choppiness not only with the browser but also the transition when switching between apps. I swear my iphone5s feels better than this brand new flagship from Samsung. I've tried to turn off all the animations and to no avail.

I've got a Tmobile Note 7. Mine seems to often not detect that I've tapped on something, and takes another tap or two to finally register. Other times, it'll be sluggish with scrolling, pulling down the notification shade, opening recent apps, and general on screen animations. The Samsung keyboard is especially bad.
The phone goes through almost no battery when asleep, so it doesn't seem like it would be something keeping the CPU active. This feels like either some sort of over-aggressive governor or some kind of conflict with data transferred to the new phone over Samsung Smart Switch.
I've rebooted multiple times, cleared app cache partition, changed animation scale to 0.5, disabled numerous Samsung bloat apps, nothing has helped. The issue started about a minute after I left the store, so it wasn't caused by any of this troubleshooting. Add this to the heat-up issues and unimpressive battery life when in use, and I am one frustrated dude. My S6 edge+ was leaps and bounds ahead of this thing.

yikes dude, your phone seems to have other problems other than the standard Samsung bs! tbh I haven't noticed stuttering while I've been using mine. Only problems I've had were with my back key, it took some time getting used to the placement and the capacitive touch buttons since I was coming from a phone with on-screen buttons. The only time I feel my phone gets hot is when I'm watching 1080p or higher videos while the phone is charging. You should try backing up important stuff to Google and then doing a full software reset and not use the smart switch stuff. I'll agree that the Samsung keyboard is not great I went back to SwiftKey but the screen size is something I'm still getting used to. I love that you can adjust the long press time to make it shorter on SwiftKey lol. Also Samsung browser is my default now just to test it out and I'm loving the fingerprint sign in thing for accounts and the ad block extension. Only good stuff so far
Exynos Note 7 reporting in - It's plenty fast and smooth so far.

Said the same thing.
But one way to improve it -
disable as many bloat apps as possible.
Use a different launcher - sense launcher beta has made it much faster.
Use google chrome
My battery life has improved and things are marginally faster. But it is a crying shame that the nexus 6p, the htc 10, the moto z, and even samsung last devices (galaxy s6) are faster than the note 7 in the day to day.
It's ... unnerving

One UI 2 Beta Animation Stutter

Have others noticed random Animation jankiness (stutter) through the interface?? Such as going back to the home screen, opening up the recent apps, launching an app from the home screen, etc... . US note 10+ unlocked running the latest beta 3.
At some points it's as fluid as an iPhone but then randomly I will see frame drops when doing the same thing. Could be any app. If this is just a beta issue then I'm fine, but if it behaves the same way when the final comes out, I might just get another phone.
Isn't this a common thing with Samsung phones? I have this issue randomly on my Note 10+ as well, running Android Pie. Same on my S10+. I'm very sensitive to this type of stuff so I definitely notice it.
No, it is not common, I understand your concern, I see these stutters in some other devices, (old ones
that I keep as secondary o emergency ) but this typically happens due to low ram
yeah i still get some stutters, but its gotten better each beta release. oneui 2 is still leagues better than every other samsung phone in terms of animation smoothness though. Samsung lag is pretty much gone, but there has always been some stutter when going to recent apps or going home... but i think samsung is working hard on this, just so that the s11's 120hz screen won't have this issue.
I'm surprised you didn't get a new phone to begin with. samsung phones are known for the features/bloat. if you want smooth, get a pixel or oneplus or iphone.
I have the official Android 10 (One UI 2.0) on my S10+ and it is definitely not smooth as one would expect. Many instances of choppy animations, dropped frames, microstutter, and lag. I factory reset the phone as well to remove any variables and the same issues persist. My Note 10+ running Android Pie is noticeably more smooth than the S10+ on the newest firmware. Here is hoping the official release for the Note 10+ will be a bit better.
Yes that's the same for me,
Also, between LockScreen and Always On display, the animation it's just terrible, it lags very very often.
I've tried to install other launchers, and the opening and closing animation is MUCH more fluid instead of the default one.
I've tried with my Note10+, and the stable version of Android 10 for Note
This is a shame indeed, I was really hoping that Samsung would work hard to fix this issue ugh. Let's hope the final one UI 2 release fixes this issue. One ui , 1 or 2, was supposed to address the old touchwiz lag issues but apparently not. I did hey a chance to play with the new pixel devices and they were smooth as butter. I was so tempted to get them but the battery issues reported stopped me from doing that. I'm definitely getting the s11 plus so hopefully that will be a better device but we will see I guess.

lag hasn't really existed for years. animation stutter is a separate thing imo. But yeah if you want the smoothest of animations, get a pixel/oneplus or iphone. I can't imagine s11 being perfect even with 120hz screen... but maybe oneui 2.1 solves all the problems.
I had my Galaxy note 10+ updated to Android 10 with one ui 2.0 and the recent apps animation is really bad, has anyone found a solution, it's almost unbearable switching apps.
Thanks in advance,
try enabling performance mode. it sure helps a lot. by default the "optimised" option is on and it only runs with 70% of the cpu power. Also dark mode "hides the stutter" much better. . dark apps open and close with better transitions. Its not the best but it helps a lot in my opinion

Disable accessability services, that should help.
People tends to say the same thing every year, every update.
“Disable this, disable and solve the situations”.
I have a OnePlus 7 pro, no lag even with all enabled. Same for iPhone 11.
Disabling things won’t make animation or lags less frequent, will only improve ram and cpu usage a little.
I definitely see issues with the animation when returning to home screen, but it's not a performance issue per se. It's almost like there is a double animation, first the normal one, but then it snaps back to showing the current app before showing the home screen. It looks super fugly.

I got the official Android 10 update for my Note 10+ on Verizon a couple days ago and it's quite laggy. My OnePlus6T runs way smoother. This phone has been pretty laggy since I bought it last September. I hadn't tried a Samsung in 3 years until the Note 10+ but I guess they still haven't learned how to make a phone run smoothly (I should have known better than to believe flossy carter). I'm quite disappointed in this phone tbh. I had high hopes and talked myself into keeping it, but in hindsight, I should have returned it.
I might do a factory reset soon to see if that helps. Pretty sad a device that cost $1100 doesn't run any better than a midrange device. I've also noticed more battery drain. The battery was epic on Android 9, and though it's still ok on 10, it has noticeably got worse.

The only accessibility service I have turned in is dashlane. Everything else is off.
For me, up to 4-5 apps there's no stutter in the animations, but after starting having more than 5 apps in the recent apps menu the lag starts and it gets worst with the increase of apps in recent apps menu.
Only Samsung to have this kind of thing in a flagship.

Actually, the issue is exactly with Dashlane. After you stop it I guarantee you that the issue will be resolved.
Apps like Dashlane and Keepass, when enabled with accessibility option, are always working on the background and checking every screen for possible data breach. Once you disable it, you will be reborn and the phone will be smooth as butter.

If the 120hz screen is confirmed, then the stutters will be more noticeable. I don't really have them since i keep my phone pristine from bloat and take care of it as a baby, but I guess the random Samsung jaggyness can one day come back
