Htc Desire Shuts down at 40-50% battery

Hey guys,
Assuming you have read the title there is something weird about my phone.
It shuts down at 40-50% battery (before it shutsdown it says empty battery briefly and then the htc flash screen appears and shutsdown).
The weird thing is the following:
It shuts down at let's say 40% battery, but when it re boots the battery is litterly empty (even when i boot in recovery it says --%, and when i plug the charger it starts at 0% again).
I have tried:
Battery Calibrator
Empty full fill up with wall charger and also tried usb charger.
Screaming @ phone
wiping battery data in recovery (4ext recovery)
The thing i am most confused about is that it goes out at 40% and when i turn it on again it's 0%. This never happened as it happened for the first time 2 weeks ago, confused. I tried different roms and it still happens (even ICS roms).
I wouldn't really mind if my phone would shut down at say 20% when it says actually it's @ 20. But as i said before: It says it's 40 (batterij indicator htc sense half full) and then shutsdown realizing after reboot it's completely empty.
Any help is much appreciated!

Shutting down on let's say 15-20% is quite normal, but I never heard of one shutting down at 40%
Are you using the stock battery, that came with your device?

Any chance to try another battery? Seems really strange cause in most cases if you wipe battery stats you get your phone shutdown at 20%, not 50%.

Its most likely a bad battery that needs to be replaced specially if tue same thing happens when using a different rom.

Seems like the phone or the battery aren't in "sync" until it reboots to show it's empty.

I'd like to think of it similar to laptop batteries that have gone bad... you plug your laptop to it's power supply, it says fully charged but as soon as you pull it out from it's power supply it drops to 50% in minutes and then goes off. The battery cannot hold the charge anymore.

It can only mean that the battery's life is at an end. The only thing you can do is to change it. I suggest that you stick to original HTC battery as the "ChinaMade" ones will die a lot faster and you'll have to change it sooner than this one.

I know this thread is started since several months but I actually have the same problem : I have a HTC Desire and its shuts down at about 50% and when I reboot it, it says the battery is empty.
I tried several times to recalibrate the battery (and to do all the things MendelMusic said in his post actually) but nothing changed.
MendelMusic, did you finally manage to solve your problem?
Anybody have a solution or any ideas?

Probably your batteries are just weak now. I'd recommend you all to invest 5 bucks in a new battery. Actually that helped at my old desire. Greetings

@dschibril : I don't think my battery is weak because the problem occured as soon as I changed the ROM (CM10). The battery was perfectly ok before that.

Hello, I have the same problem with you. Did you manage to fix it and how? Have you tried a brand new battery so far?

It has to do with the Desire's poor battery age management system. Li-Ion batteries age, meaning that, as time passes, they're gonna be able to hold less and less milliamps. After almost two years, my Desire's battery can only hold 82% of the original ~1400 mA charge.
The only way around this is to use the Nexus One Battery Calibrator (Nexus One and our Desire share the same hardware underneath the hood). You'll need a compatible kernel and some patience. Instructions in this post.
My 2 cents: if your battery is only able to hold less than say 75%-80% of its original charge, then you should replace it. Li-Ion batteries age in such a way that they suddenly go dead, so it's not worth taking the risk.

Later Edit - If your Desire shuts down at say 40% - 50%, that means that your battery is 40% or 50% gone, so it's time for a replacement. I'd still try the battery calibration method i wrote about in the above post, just to determine if it's a freak software error or the battery's fault.
P.S. - Wiping battery stats does nothing to solve most issues (for the Desire, at least).

My phone turns off sometimes at 50%, sometimes at 80% of battery.
I have new battery now (original one) and it is the same. Phone turns off, only when it is connected to charger it does not.

Hey guys, I've had my phone for 4 or so months now and I always charge it while my phone is off and never had any charging/battery issues until today, I decided to charge my phone while it's on and it charged up to 25% and I restarted my phone without removing it from the charger and after it booted back it it's showing 50%, I restarted a few times, tried a cold boot, it's still 50%.
Is this a known issue with this phone? does anyone know what's causing this? I've never had this happen before.
EDIT: After this happened I ran my battery to 0% so I can attempt a battery calibration and when I poped it on the charger it showed my battery was actually 0% and showed a yellow hazard triangle thing (normally it only drops to 1% and there has never been a yellow triangle before)

Sometimes the Android system can incorrectly report a battery charged. I have had it happen to me on my Nexus by about 10%, but have not had it happen to me on my G3. I would not worry about it too much if it only happened to you once. If in continues you to jump around in battery percentage, then I would suggest getting a replacement battery. Keep in mind to try not to leave it charging for very long after reaching 100%, from my experience it can effect a battery's ability to hold a charge if that is done repeatedly. Which means do not leave it charging overnight while you are sleeping. Also I would not suggest running it until 0%, I would imagine a sudden shut down of the Android Operating system is not a healthy thing for it either. Just like it is not good to go up to a computer and just pull the power cord.

I never leave my phone on the charger while I sleep since it only drops 1% while I sleep. My phone actually only goes on the charger like 3 times a month
I know it's not good to fully drain the battery very much, I was just draining it to attempt a battery calibration in the os. And when I do this my phone usually only drops to 1% then dies, but all of a sudden it dropped to 0% this time and showed a big yellow triangle with a big exclamation mark in it
Anyways I reflashed my rom in hopes I can flush the problem out. In 4 months of owning this phone I've never seen this warning before.

This is almost exactly what happened with my old phone (Samsung Captivate Glide). If this continues to happen, it is one of the first signs of the battery failing. But if this is a one time thing, I wouldn't worry about it.
In my case, the battery was going bad. It started going from any % battery, down to 0 instantly, forcing a shutdown. After rebooting, It would show a decent charge (~60% most of the time), but would do the same thing within 5 minutes. At first it only acted up like this once a month, but it became more and more frequent that it happened every day, after using the phone for only 15 minutes. The only fix is to get a replacement battery.

tyvm, This is extremely helpful info to keep in mind. Now that you mention it I have seen the battery kinda swollen up a couple times when it got hot, only ever so slightly but I did notice it.
If my issue persists i'll defnitly try a new battery, thanks for the tip

Annoying Battery Issue

My Note 4 is 14mo old and for the last couple months it just shuts off on me even though I have plenty of power left.
I am a light user and usually have enough power for all day use. I rarely use my phone down past 10-15%. I always put my phone on the charger when I go to bed at night when I have somewhere around 20% charge left. If I notice that I might not have enough power to get me through the day I'll put it on the charger somewhere between 30 and 40%.
Lately, like tonight I got a low battery warning at 30% power while I was on the phone. Not even two minutes later it shuts off. When I turn it back on it starts to boot up but then shuts off again. When I put it on the charger it was completely dead. This only happens 3 or 4 times a month but it's annoying because often it happens at the most inconvenient time.
I've also had it shut off and then when I put it on the charger it starts charging at 28% power.
Please let me know what may be going on here and a solution...

I had the exact same issue. I had 2 different batteries shutting off at 20-30%!.... Replacing the battery to a brand new one simply fixed it!.... if you are going to order one online try to avoid unknown brands . Also, pay attention there are some fake Samsung batteries claiming to be authentic.
Also if you still have warranty, contact Samsung and they should send you a new one. That's what i also did.

So you think its the battery and not software related? I was thinking software issue because I don't abuse my battery by running it dead and it's an intermittent problem.
I know that the life cycle of Li-ion is greatly reduced by repeated draining to below 10% (my kid's phones suffer from that. Seems like they can't make a battery last more than 6mo) but I've never had a phone battery go bad on any of MY phones including my old Note 2 even after two years. Maybe I just have a bad battery?

Doesn't matter whether you abuse the battery or not. Some batteries just go bad faster than others. I also think it's your battery.
A factory reset without restoring apps will rule out a software issue though, but since we can't root, it likely isn't anything messing with your battery percent unless it's just an app draining your battery. But even if it were the latter, your battery wouldn't die then start charging at 28%.

Pretty sure this is an actual built in feature. Mines always died at ~20% (since the 5.1.1 update) and once plugged into a charger and rebooted all my running apps and clipboard info is still running as if the phone never died.
My battery is brand new (from warranty replacement) and it still does this so this is why I think it's a "feature" to keep you from losing data in the event of a low battery event. Just my opinion.

I once read to take out the battery, hold the power button for 30 seconds (while the battery is out), then put it back in and see if it helps. This supposedly gets rid of any residual power storage. I don't know if this is a placebo affect by after I did that, my battery now goes all the way to 0 before dieing.

Not exactly a placebo, but not sure if it truly helps. Doing this would clear all electricity stored in any capacitors in the phone. I'm just not sure how this helps.
And my battery goes all the way down to 0% too. It's not normal for the phone to due at any other % (except maybe 1%).

How I fixed my battery life [Calibration][NoRoot]

So I am on the WWE of Nougat, version 2.41.401.41. I was getting abysmal battery life, at about 2h30m screen on time, without doing anything special (just browsing, some social media, etc.).
Also, AccuBattery was showing the battery capacity at 2300 MhA, which I found quite impossible for a one year old device.
I suspected that my battery was badly calibrated. What I did is what is described in this thread, slightly modified:
Charge the phone while turned on up to 100%.
Remove the charger and reboot the phone. Upon reboot, the battery will have dropped at about 96-98%.
Reconnect the charger and charge again up to 100%.
Remove the charger again and reboot the phone. This time, the battery will have dropped again, but not as much as the first time.
Repeat steps 2 and 3 until after reboot your battery remains at 100% or at least 99% (depends on how freaky you want to get).
After doing the above I have been getting about 3h30m to 4h00m screen on time and AccuBattery is showing about 2700 MhA battery capacity.
Seems that HTC has really messed up the battery calibration on the 10. Hope this little "trick" helps you as much as it did help me.

A follow up to this, here is a reply I got from HTC support, regarding battery:
* For battery calibration :
please unplug the phone from charger - turn off the phone device - press on Volume up + Volume down - Power on button all at the same time till the phone started on , please check the battery indicator ,then follow as below :
1. Restart your device
2. Turn on Airplane Mode
3. Connect your device to the charger, and charge it fully
4. Set screen brightness to Max.
5. Set Screen Time out to never.
6. Dial *#*#3424#*#*, choose battery and Charging run down test, and follow the instructions.
If the device loses more than 40% of battery in an hour, then send your device to the repair center

Hey, so one month-ish on, how has the battery life been? Has it stayed at 3h30-4h00 screen time or has it dropped again like before?

Depends on the usage really. I have given up on measuring the SOT, I just plug in every day at night. But has been pretty stable, gets me through the day.

Fair enough, it's a bit pointless at this point to be honest. Does the phone reboot randomly below 50/60% or has calibration fixed that issue? That's the biggest gripe I have with the Nougat update at the moment. If calibration fixes it, I'm gonna do it now! If not, do you reckon another kernel fix it?

I have never had that issue, before or after "calibration". I am using stock ROM with ElementalX kernel (stock settings in Aroma).

Turns out it is a common issue:

i have 300 mah battery capacity on my htc 10 , happened overnight ...

A follow up to this, here is a reply I got from HTC support, regarding battery:
* For battery calibration :
please unplug the phone from charger - turn off the phone device - press on Volume up + Volume down - Power on button all at the same time till the phone started on , please check the battery indicator ,then follow as below :
1. Restart your device
2. Turn on Airplane Mode
3. Connect your device to the charger, and charge it fully
4. Set screen brightness to Max.
5. Set Screen Time out to never.
6. Dial *#*#3424#*#*, choose battery and Charging run down test, and follow the instructions.
If the device loses more than 40% of battery in an hour, then send your device to the repair center

Did that work for you?

For me the htc tool is showing like 6-7%discharge over the one hour...
But if I I use Spotify or any other online/local music app, this can't be true...
Seems to be a software problem, nothing to do with nougat or oreo, nor with firmware version.
Trying the "manual" calibration tomorrow.
About the 40% rule... I already had a support guy say it only needs to be 25%...
Still my battery is far far away from that... Sadly, would love to send it in to have a fresh battery...

so when you do the test it should only lose about 25% in one hr like the HTC rep said to you instead of the 40 quoted by the other forum user?

Right, I am in contact with the HTC support using their FB chat.
Last time I asked, still on HTC One m7, it was around 40% for me too.
This time they said it should not drop below 75%.
To be sure you should ask the support yourself, maybe it depends on the country as well?

Have you tried wiping the cache partition, my battery was 100% & went to 81% and held its charge for much longer, it's a short way of clearing your battery stats

Another trick
I found an alternate trick and it looks like it's a bit more effective (at least for me):
Basically following OP's instructions: charging it to 100% then turn the phone off. But instead of restarting, Turn OFF the phone then hold power+volume down until the backlight of the back and app switcher buttons flashes twice then let go. Then turn on the phone while holding volume up. I think this helps force a battery recalibration every time.
When I did it once I got to 78% then the second restart 55%. I'm currently charging for the 3rd restart to see if I can get better than that. Previously when I tried OP's method a few days earlier I got 78% on the first restart , 98% on the second, and 99% for every time I tried after that.

Did you unplug the phone before turning it off or did you keep it plugged in?

have you guys tried the Chargie app? It's coupled with a hardware device that limits charging to the phone at your desired level and saves the battery long term.

Unfortunately none of the above did the trick for me. Still, the phone randomly (once in a while) goes to loop when 15 to 20 percent of charge is remaining and won't stop before I plug in a charger. /sad face/

Well the test consumed around 50% of my battery. The issue that started around a month ago is that my phone shuts off around 30% battery , however it won't switch on again till I plug-in the charger and when it is on , the battery is at 1%. Seems that the phones is displaying a 1% as 30% before shutting down. What should I do ?

I had the exact same problem. I sent it to HTC and got the battery replaced.

battery draining when tablet is turned off

Ok guys,yeah it's 5 years old already.Few days ago I noticed then when I charge it to 95-100% and leave the tablet turned off,when I turn it on battery looses like 10 % over a day and so on,so battery is draining when the tablet is turned off.
What can I do,I mean I can take it to a friend of mine who is pc technician but what can he do?
Possible hardware failure or battery issue?

If the battery has lost much capacity it will still charge up to 100%, but discharge much quicker.
If screen-on time is still okay, some peripheral component may not switch off when powering down. Some custom rom had messed up an old phone of mine and even after flashing stock rom the battery drained by 50%/day after switching the phone off. I even ordered a new battery to no avail.
If the Note hangs up or freezes during power off, you'd need a hard reset to power it on again and the battery would be completely drained in less than a day.
Self-discharge on my Note is extremely low, about the same as if i would store the battery separately or with a hardware power switch.

Screen on time is terrible like 2h or so...which means battery is bad,right?

Bad battery or bad configuration. The latter if the Note is drawing more than 1000mA when idle with screen on.
My battery still lasts about 7 hours (screen-on) and is the original from 2k13.

Battery lasts for like 6 h,and it's draning power when is switched off...I'm not sure how much but maybe like 5 % per day...
And I also noticed time and date is fuc..d up...
Can this be resolved?

So now even new battery can not last more then 4 hours,today tablet turned off at 30 % battery,I got flashing blinks and it turned off.
When I charge tablet it doesn't charge like in the start for 8-9 hours,usually 4,5 at max and when I check on status I see 70 % and then in a second 100 %.So smth is pretty messed up..
Seems to me it's for garbage only...

The Android Coulometer could be ****ed up. Although that should be more of a database than a driver, you could repair it by flashing the Coulometer driver via ADB. Only for stock rom. And there was only a guide for my old Huawei Mediapad on how to perform this.
A complete factory recovery in Download Mode will have the same effect. Or it may just slowly get better with time again, as it did with said Mediapad.
I once experienced real drain in soft-off state of an old phone, about 50%/day. A new battery didn't help. And the phone did really switch off, otherwise you'd have had to press power for 10s instead of one, for a cold boot. And with even higher drain.
A custom rom may have flashed a wrong firmware into a peripheral chip's flash. In case of said phone i suspected the wifi/BT combo chip, which retained a custom rom's bug even after flashing stock rom in D/L mode.

I was told that this is hardware issue.
What is factory recovery and what will it do,and how do I do it?
2.I can't update to android 5.0 at all.
When I click update manually get msg: you have recent update smth like that...
