5x Wll Not Boot - Nexus 5X Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey All -
I awoke to find my 5x off.
Naturally, I though the battery was completely dead.
I charged it for a few hours and still could not get the phone to turn on.
I know the charge is fine because my wfe's 5x charges it no problem.
When connected to my Windows 10 box, Windows reports that it is an unrecognized USB device.
ADB does not find it.
It did boot to Fastboot ONCE, but I have not been able to do that again.
Any suggestions, or is this hard-bricked?
Thanks!

I called Google and they will be replacing the device.
However, I am concerned that I cannot wipe the phone.
Should I be concerned? Or is the data not retrievable?

No, the phone does nothing at all.
It does not turn on and a computer does not recognize it over USB.

You said you charged it for a few hours so does the screen with the white battery still show up or you had just left it plugged it hoping it's charging?

I saw the charging icon on the screen briefly once.
When I saw that, I left it alone, assuming that it was charging.
About two hours later, i tried to turn it on and it did not turn on.
So I tried to boot into fastboot. It did so.
Then, I selected to just start it up. It merely turned back off when I did that.
I booted it into fastboot once more and selected recovery.
It has not done anything since.

When my bootlooping 5X wouldn't let me do a factory reset via recovery mode, I let it cool and waited maybe 15 minutes. After that I was able to get in and cleared it up.

Mine is stone cold.
I am unsure if it is even charging.
The port is clean, so that is not the issue.

Bricked?! [UPDATED]

I tried searching, but I couldn't find anyone with the same problem as me and I don't know what to do.. I'm kind of freaking out. The last update I installed was darkside beta02, and I was really liking it minus a few connection and call issues. Anyways, I was in my car earlier today and picked out a song on play music. The phone instantly turned off, and it appeared that it was about to reboot so I didn't think much about it. Nope. When it starts to turn on it rarely makes it past the samsung screens that pops up right when you start the phone, but it has made it as far as the swirling samsung s splash screen thing. It just acts like it is rebooting from that part and it's like a never ending cycle until I remove the battery. I can get the phone into download mode by plugging it into the computer, but it only stays on for a few seconds and then goes back to it's never ending reboot. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated, I really can't afford to have bricked this phone
UPDATE: I managed to restore the phone to stock, and I proceeded to root and put darkside beta 7.1 on it. Everything was running fine... For a few hours. It began to do the same rebooting described above, but now instead of looking like it's going to boot normally it goes straight to a screen that says "Firmware encountered an issue. Please sleect recovery mode in Kies and try again." with the phone model, "Custom Binary Download: No" and "Current Binary: Samsung Official" up top. It only stays at this screen for a few seconds before it starts back into it endless half-reboot. Any suggestions? This is frustrating me A LOT.
uh, have you tried charging it? Honestly at first blush it sounds like a dead battery.

Yes I've charged it overnight... And it does the same thing when it's on the charger without the battery in.
Can you get into recovery? My wife's phone did something similar out of no where. I had to restore a nandroid.

He said he can't get into recovery.
Do you have insurance? Might want to take it to a store.

Oops sorry about that. I would reset your flash counts and try and take it back to the store if possible... seems like your only option if you can't get into recovery. Or reflash stock. Then root again then clear cache and then factory defaults
If you can get it to stay on long enough-- in Odin

The problem is that I can't do anything but watch the phone start up for about 10 seconds, or be in download mode for about 10 seconds. Not much time to do anything.
That is why you reset flash counts before you go in... Google is your friend and try to unroot somehow--

I had this exact thing happen to me today!! For the last week or so, I would get a random reboot up to four times a day. This started happening after I flashed Whitehawkx UVLDE zip. What I did was left the battery in the phone let the constant reboot run until the battery died. Then I would try to get into download mode, but then it would reboot before Odin recognized it. I left the usb plug in the phone and took the battery out, the phone would still do the rebooting vibration. I just stayed with trying to get the phone to stay on long enough to get recognized by Odin. Leave the drained battery out of the phone for a while (your choice of how long, I left it for about forty minutes) and replace it, hopefully it stays on long enough to get recognized. Finally it stayed on long enough and I re-flashed ULKL1. Now I'm back to running TDJ's DARKSIDE. EVOLUTION.2 [BETA 3] and I haven't had any reboots where as before it would reboot within fifteen minutes.

Thank you! And when you say replace the battery, do you mean get a whole new one or put in the dead one?
Just put the dead one in.
My advice is similar to his, but without killing the battery. Open odin on your computer, and input what your going to input into pda and have everything ready to go, so all you have to do is press start and its off. Now, start with the phone turned off, hold both volume buttons and plug in the usb cable from the computer quickly! Have your hand ready on the mouse and ready to click start. Soon as odin recognizes click that start button! Hopefully everything happened so quick, that the phone will take the flash. However, if it doesn't, then I'm afraid the only answer you would have left is to use a jig to reset the counter and take it in to be replaced.

[Q] Q: Anyone elses HOX powers up on its own while turned off and charging?

Since the first ROM I have a strange problem, everytime I turn my One X off, plugin the charger it keeps not only charging but will power up the device to normal mode eventually - i.e. no special charging mode etc. It sometimes takes several hours but in the end it will always be on which is really frustrating.
I've tried different ROMs with different Kernels, I'm now on CM10 nightly - still it powers up magically if I have turned if off before and plug in the charger.
Does anyone else have this problem??? Any suggestions?
Same here
I've got the same issue. Exactly as you described.
I don't have any idea why is it happening - is it a hardware or software issue.
:silly:
It's part of CWM. Flash stock recovery if you don't want this to happen then you'll lose root.

What is your cwm version? Try upgrading to 5.8.4.0.
Is this on One X only because I never had that on any other device?

Mine is 5.8.4.0.
Can you try reflaehing it? Earlier versions had that problem.
Also, you can try it with twrp to see if that helps.
EDIT. I may have misunderstood guys. Earlier cwms wouldnt let you stay powered down after shutting the phone down. It would turn on even without plugging in.
EDIT2 Turned mine off. Plugged it in. Remains off so far. Will see in the morning. It certainly sounds like cwm problem. Try twrp and see if that helps.
I do already have 5.8.4.0 :-\

You are not alone, all of us are facing this one, and i think it's pretty normal.
If you drain your battery to zero, and if you start to charge it, one hour after (that's what i've noticed) it'll boot up and it'll show up your lock screen.
This is normal for the HOX?
Im completely stock, un-rooted etc etc.
And when my HOX is off, when I plug the charger in it boots the phone. But then if you switch it off whilst the charger is on, it will not re-boot up.
It still happens, I have reflashed recovery and stuff and it still turns on itself.
I just tried it over night, started with a 41% charge left, turned it off, plugged in the charger and this morning it was turned on. :'(

Arc won't boot

Hello guys,
I hope you can help. I'm having issues with my Arc running cyanogenmod 7 (.2 I think). I've been using cm on the device for over a year and one morning it would not turn on. I thought it's out of battery so I charged it. Later I tried to turn it on but it still wouldn't start. I further noticed that when plugged in to charge the LED was not illuminated. I tried a different battery from another arc device, but didn't change anything. (Mine worked on the other device.)
A week later or so, I tried to charge it again and suddenly the LED lit up and I was able to turn it on. Unfortunately, this was only temporarily. I checked the phone later and it was off again.
So I thought, I try to send it back to Amazon where I bought it, and maybe they don't get that I modified the software. But they did...
Any thoughts on what I could do?
Cheers,
Diophantus
Can you get the phone into flash mode or fast boot mode or have it detected by any computer?

I tried flasboot (0.9 linux) and it did not work. I'll try to get a windows machine and test fast boot
Fastboot doesn't work either. Nothing pops up when connecting the device while holding the fastboot key.
Any other suggestions?
So the LED won't turn blue if you hold the menubutton and connect the USB?
And no green LED on flashmode?
Did you do something special with the phone before it happened?

Nope, it just happened over night. Didn't flash or anything. I had been using the Wifi a lot more than usual, but nothing else.
It is strange, that it turned on that one time.
Can they ask Sony if I unlocked the bootloader or how could they know this?

[Q] Sprint S3 Won't Turn On

So my phone was probably around 50% and I went to grab some food and when I check the phone wouldn't turn on,I rebooted only for it to be stuck on the samsung boot screen and I tried to reboot again except this time it didn't turn on at all.
I didn't do anything at all during the day and my phone was on stable CM10.3 for the past month with no problems.I went home and tried to charge it but no light showed up when charging with battery in and only a red light shows up when i take the battery out and charger in. I connected in to the pc and it showed a QHSUSB_DLOAD when installing drivers. does this mean my phone is bricked? If so how did it happen if CM10.3 was working fine before?

From my research i believe the problem is that the internal sd gets messed up and gets stuck in read only mode instead of read/write. Thats why it won't boot and you can't flash anything in odin. still working on a solution. I've tried booting into download mode with a jig but still no dice.

I've read through that thread but while it had some good info it is for getting a hardbricked phone into download mode which we can get into. I've tried a few things, reintalled drivers re-downloaded tars, etc. now I have the phone ---!---Computer screen when it boots up. I've google searched around since xda search is down an one thread said to keep trying in Odin.
Edit: aaaaaaaaaand now iim hardbricked......

It used to. I tried calling Sprint (no help) but now it wont boot. I'm trying the sd card method now

Phone wont boot, what is the problem?

Today I was surfing the web and the phone locked up and restarted itself. Kept getting to the android screen with the red yellow and blue symbols then restarting. Left the phone alone to get back to work then the phone restarted finally went to use the phone and after about 3 mins froze up again. Now the phone won't get past the Google boot screen and if I want to try and power the phone on the power button has to be pressed in about 30secs to a minute of two.
Also i can't get into recovery mode reliably since if I select recovery the phone again freezes at the Google screen on reboot and never gets to recovery 9 out of 10 times other times I can get to recovery and then phone will then crash while in recovery or will allow me to use recovery long enough to wipe the cache and factory reset which neither has worked.
While Plugged into a charger and just sits there nothing on screen just a black screen.
Phone is on latest android unrooted and locked.
i had this happen to my SO's stock/locked/unrooted Nexus 6P.
Plug it into a PC, wait a couple minutes, then press and hold the power button for like 1-2 minutes.

I don't have any issues. I was just curious. I've just never heard of a fix for any phone that requires a button press for more that like 30 seconds.
So what is the expected outcome? Does the phone just reboot and simply function correctly? Do you have a link to the forum post you read this in?

Here is where I read about plugging it into a PC and then pressing the power button:
https://support.google.com/nexus/troubleshooter/3337561?hl=en#ts=3337942,3339328

Update*** I hooked the thing to power and nothing. So I just sat here at my desk for several minutes holding down the power button and the damn thing finally came back on. But I had to hold it for a very very long time, not the normal 10-30 seconds like it should take to do a hard power off. I'm talking minutes.
