First overnight charge device very hot. - Google Pixel XL Questions & Answers

I reached over to check my phone a bit ago and quickly recoiled my hand as my device was crazy hot. Anyone else had anything like this right off the bat?

That's almost 120 degrees... Device has been at 100% for approximately 5 hrs.

Wow, yeah I just don't plug it in over night. Was it laying on the carpet?

I had a similar experience. When I stopped using it while it was plugged in, it cooled right down.

Maybe HTC is next

Have a bucket of water near by just in case...

I charged mine overnight and it was not warm/hot.
I didn't use the included charger. In my bedroom I have an old charger that is not a quick charger, so maybe that was the difference.

I left mine charging overnight with the charger it came with and it was fine.

That doesn't seem normal.
I leave mine plugged in all night with a case on (which traps heat) and mine was cool this morning.

That was just the battery temp. The outer shell was barely able to be handled. It was like touching a pot shortly after cooking. It quickly cooled down after unplugging it.

It probably wasn't the battery but the phone was on and an app was cranking up the CPU constantly making the device hot (which would have also raised the battery temperature), and as it was plugged in to mains the phone never went to sleep and the app just keep the CPU ramped all night long. It doesn't take much constant polling of the CPU to cause the temperature to raise when that goes on for hours.
Regards
Phil

Have you got the app list of what was running while it was on charge ? Had mine in my quick charger 3.0 unit and no heat and it was in a silicone case, have you tried another charger ?

Just curious, how much does/if the processor throttles when hot?

How hot does your phone get?

While being used it goes to 93 degrees. While pluged in 102 degrees without use and 113 with use. Is this normal? Just checking
Im on stock by the way.

I don't know, but, I am wondering how long most people can go with their screen brightness pegged before it turns it down to 'keep it from over heating', cuz honestly that's the only thing that I cannot stand about this phone.....it happens after only like a few minutes....it's infuriating. Do I have a bad phone?
So far as temp goes I'll keep an eye on it and report back...now you got me wondering.
That's about the same as mine so i would say normal. I didn't notice my screen dimming.

i manged to heat mine to the point where it stopped charging less than 3hrs after buying the phone... luckily my car has a bada$$ A/C so i just hung the phone on the rear-view mirror, using 3.5mm headphone aux cable i use for in-car audio, placing the device right in front of the a/c vent. went from scorching hot to ice cold in under 60 seconds

The hottest I've seen was 104-107 fahrenheit today (this is the second day i've had this phone) and that was when I was outside surfing on 3G while listening to music. I live in Texas btw..so the heat is legit. But when inside and just dickin around doing the same sht, it never hits 100 degrees. At the most it's 95-98.
Where are you finding the hotness number??

I just watched some what the flick youtube reviews for about an hour total, in full screen, at max brightness - trying to drain the battery for better calibration.
The battery temperature was stuck at 31C. Neither the back nor the front of the phone even felt warm.
hottest mine has gotten was 44C
I'm using Battery Indicator from the market (free version)
on standby, my phone is about 26C
light web browsing/texting its around 31C
when charging for an hour, it can get up to 40C
the highest i've seen it was around 46C when I was playing games, then took a call for 20 mins right after.

In all fairness, the cpu was not being loaded that much - maybe only 25%. Most of the video decoding seems to be done in gpu hardware.
I'm sure it would be much warmer if I was playing a 3d game.
The hottest my phone has ever gotten is 118°F and that is out in the sun using maverick pro gps. Normal usage ranges 98° to 105°

i wished everyone would have clarified if they were rooted and which kernal...it might help tie down the problem.
i only noticed crazy overheating on V3.. none so far while using the stock kernal while rooted.

6 hours screen on?

Sure sure it's with light use, but just the fact that it can hit 6+ hours screen time after more than a day and a half... sits pretty well with me.
No games, 30% screen brightness, 74 mins of calls, quite a bit of texting & whatsapp, 30 odd mins browsing, wifi 100%, sync on, only 1 widget.
aokp, lean kernel, undervolted, K6, extended battery.
Loving this phone!!!

Not bad at all! Especially considering 74min of phone calls.
NICE!!! Can't wait till my extended battery comes in.
Nice. I've had my extended battery for 2 days now and I am seriously impresses ed with it. It on my drive home I'm at 65% instead of 30%. I really think the extended battery should of come stock.
I got a similar 6 hour in airplane mode. I was watching a movie while roaming on vacation.
Verizon stock rom. stock battery.
Even stock SGN makes wonders with battery on Wi-Fi But still your stats are truly amazing

No, he didn't? Look closer on first screenshot. There is no sign of charging on those lines below the graph. Those places where graph line goes up are pretty normal and that doesn't mean device war charging.

Nah I didn't charge it at all, as the other guys pointed out. I remember my battery dropping to 4%, I then put down my phone and when I came back later on, it was reading 5%. I thought I was going crazy, but looking at the graph now I see it really did happen. It raised from 4% to 5% and stayed there for a bit before dropping to 4% again.
Anyway, I hope this wasn't a one off... it's not doing as well today with the same usage. We'll see...

Actually, the phone calls don't do much damage... You should be able to talk 11hours on this phone apparently...
I am very jealous. I am lucky to get 3-3.5 of web surfing.
With standard battery, you can get almost 11 hours screen on time (by doing nothing):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1366878&highlight=max+battery
So, that's the limit
My experience with extended battery, 2000 mAH, GSM, I could get 4 and a half screen on time with 61 hours stand by time. For sure, it can go down to 6 hours or more screen on time if I down the standby time. All with stock ROM, stok kernel, un-locked
It is not difficult to achieve that knowing the limit, all depends on how you set it up and how do you use your phone.

I managed to get mine up to 57C a couple of days ago. Running Copilot while on car charger on car dashboard on a hot sunny day. Didn't realise until I took it off dashboard and it was too hot to comfortably hold. Scary, but it survived fine. I shall be a bit more careful in future - don't really like the idea of it getting quite that hot.

Yes, I used to have a yellow spot on top of the screen when using the phone normally, but is now only really noticable when it gets hot.
Mine got to 50C today while playing Riptide GP.
Normally it gets to about 48C but I put the game on the highest resolution in the settings menu and it went to over 50C :-o
This is with the newest firmware 1.29.401.11.
Does anyone else experience this?

I think there's also the issue of ambient temperature. Right now in my office the temperature of my phone charging is 27ºC. I presume it's because my office stores dead bodies and so we don't get sick from the smell they leave the thermostat set to 'arctic'. At home where we haven't turned the AC on yet (and the inside temp hovers around 80ºF) my phone gets to 50ºC just web browsing.

I have had exactly the same happen to me with Copilot on a sunny day! Had to shut the phone down and position it by a aircon vent in the car. Don't know how hot it got, but too hot to handle comfortably.
I wonder if Copilot is the culprit here? Anyone had the same with Navigon, etc?

I suspect that any navigation app is going to hammer the phone. There's an awful lot of processing going on. Plus the screen will be on full brightness in the car which doesn't help much.

Aren't dead bodies supposed to be stored in mortuarys... Though theres a few in our office that could pass for dead sometimes.

I see there's an update to Copilot today that "fully supports the One X". It'll be interesting to see if it helps with the temperature problem.

Weird heat while charging

Hi,
i've been using the GNEX for almost 3 months, it had been rooted and used the AOKP ROM since i have bought my phone. And just last night, while i charge my phone as usual when i got home then i went to a bath, then when i came out and pick up the phone, the back left hand corner is producing a lot of heat!! then i unplug the usb cable immediately and turn off my phone, after around 3 mins, till the phone had cooled down and i thought it was just the cable's problem, so i switch the Nexus S' usb cable instead of the GNEX original one, and it happens again in just 3mins!! so i switched the battery again which both of them are original ones, charge it with my phone on. and it just happens again!!! so i switched off my phone and charge it, and it just charge normally without generating weird heat...! strange!! so do anyone know what's going on with my phone?? should i unroot it and take it back to samsung? please, needed help!! THX!!

You've had your phone for nearly 3 months and this is the first time it's getting hot? LOL anyway sounds like something is using the cpu...

Typical 9999 day warranty. I'd stay away. We all know these cheap Chinese electronics go bad on day 10,000.
instead of going for the cheapest go for the most vfm.anker external batteries.check em out on amazon.they tout the maximum capacity for a given price range.astro series;10000mah pack i am using currently.it comes with 18 months warranty.you may opt for the smaller ones too.
I have bad experiencing with those cheap battery packs. Usually they have a high capacity, but they still lose charge very quickly.
I had a 5500mAh battery pack for my Galaxy Nexus, which should be enough for charging it 3 times. The first 3 times it worked alright, but afterwards I was lucky to get one charge out of it. Still, one charge is of course always useful.
Can't be any more disappointing then my fluxmob bolt. Spend $60 and it'll charge about 30% of the battery.

Alright, gonna make this review based off one charge.
It arrived yesterday afternoon and I put it on the charger for 8 hours. It has three LEDs on the side that show how much remaining charge the unit has. I discharged my phone to 13% and rebooted then plugged this thing in. The phone thinks it's charging ac so the phone charged to 100% in about an hour and a half. The unit is blinking the final led now. So one full charge is expected.
I'm satisfied and if anyone has any questions let me know.

Nice review. Gonna pickup one myself now
Got pretty decent results with this. Getting around 100 charge. Also goes on AC mode which is good in getting the charge up quick
Yeah that's what I'm seeing. It's nice because normally about 6 hours into my shift I get down to around 14% then I plug into this bad boy and charge it back up before I head home and start the rest of my day.
Just leave the battery on the charger in my car then take it back into work the next day and start the whole thing over again
