Android Pay not working with unlocked bootloader! - Google Pixel XL Questions & Answers

So, I'm on XDA what did you expect , I unlocked my bootloader and Android pay 'can't verify the software on my device'...
So I can't add my card.
No biggy, but has anyone else experienced the same?
Or am I just super unlucky? ????

Yes, same with the 6P. Bootloader unlock breaks Android Pay.

It must be based on Android version. My 6P has the same version of Pay as my XL but v the 6P still works and I can add cards to it.
It's a mixture of Bootloader and 7.1
Which sucks...

My 6P is unlocked but no root. Doesn't work. They definitely changed SafetyNet policies. It's not Android 7.1 the issue.

It's probably a change that's still not rolled out to everyone. Unfortunately even my bank app relies on SafetyNET and disables some features. I guess no more custom kernels for me on the Pixel

Truthfully, I think I'll just wait for everyone else on the internet to complain, have Google revert the change and then carry on as normal haha
I'm sure there's some security risk involved. But that's for me to deal with, I can't blame Google because I unlocked my bootloader, that's just wrong.

It's more of a bank requirement than a Google requirement. I don't see that one getting rolled back. If they want more banks on board they need to comply to their security measures and show that the device data can't be compromised. The dev community, while vocal, is small. They want the system available to the masses.

It's funny that you mention that???? because my android pay (version 1.8) is now WORKING with my unlocked bootloader on the Pixel XL.
However, the rest of the internet is having very mixed results. Many not working, only a handful are. And even then, it seems like it might be a temporary glitch

So I am going to have to lock my bootloader, subsequently wiping my phone to use android pay again? D:

I don't think locking your boot loader wipes your phone. Only unlocking.

anyone find any fix/round about this problem?

Try taking out your sim, I'm assuming its a GSM model, and if that works set everything up on wifi and put it back in. I've seen locked sim cards before. You might have to get another one from your provider

Do you have a DoCoMo branded nexus? There are some known issues with DoCoMo nexus devices reverting to a locked state when factory reset.

Plain old GSM model.
Did you try booting it without the SIM inserted as suggested?

Just download the toolkit and do an oem unlock, and reflash the stock image.

The device you bought was SIM-locked to a carrier. Where did you buy it from? If they said it was unlocked, then they need to provide you the code. Otherwise, you can get around it by using this or this.

Most Galaxy Nexus devices are sold SIM-unlocked. However, there are some, like yours, that are sold SIM-locked. If they are sold SIM-locked, you need a code to allow it to work on carriers OTHER than the one the device was locked to (which someone already entered in your phone before you bought it). Once the code is entered, it will work exactly like a SIM-unlocked device until such time when you either do a factory reset or flash a different ROM. When that happens, you will need to re-enter the code OR use one of the methods I linked to above.

You don't need root or anything for the toolkit. Also, if you don't ask it to root your phone, it won't. It's. Pretty straightforward process. Just pick the one that combines the download stock image from Google to flash it and whatnot.

The OP's issue is that he has a SIM lock, and he needs it unlocked. A toolkit is not going to help him with that. The links I posted will.
And I never recommend using toolkits for anything -- you may end up having issues.

[Q] Trying to convert to GPE (Help)

Hello,
I'm new to Android and yesterday I bought the HTC One M8 (UK, 3). I really do not like Sense 6 so I decided to find out how to convert it to the GPE with OTA updates. I came across this thread and I think it does what I want: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2706441
I know I should post my problem in the thread above but I haven't got enough posts to do so.
I'm a complete noob so would love some assistance please.
1. I downloaded the gpe3.zip to my phone's download folder
2. Turned off phone
3. Hold down volume rocker whilst turning phone on.
4. Click Recovery
5. This appears on my phone and then reboots after a few minutes back to sense:

For that you need a custom recovery, and afaik you need s-off first before you can convert and have ota updates.
Edit :
And no s-off is not available at this time !

what this guy said, + i thought I was borked too seeing this red triangle screen, but turned out for after smashing power and vol, it's just a pre screen to recovery? I don't know which combo did it, but I hit them a couple times and then got to stock recovery screen. But what this guy said, need s-off = no s-off => no GPE for now. Surprised you don't like sense, sense 6 is awesome.

I have questions for you.. Are you unlocked? if no, unlock via HTCDEV.. Do you have a custom recovery? If no, you need one. LOTS of prerequisites.
As a N00B, you have ALOT more reading and understanding to do BEFORE you flash ANYTHING...
Take this advice, and do more reading before you go and brick your phone..

First thing you need to unlock your bootloader and root at same time be quicker. Then install philz custom recovery and make a nand backup just in case all fails. Then download the required rom and flash as normal via recovery

Theres no need to use weaksauce. Flash supersu.zip via recovery from chainfire. Also philz posted instructions how to flash recovery via ADB
Since you are unlocked, flash recovery from fastboot. fastboot flash recovery "recoveryname.img" you dont need root since you'll be flashing a rooted ROM anyways.

S-off is not working 100 percent with every EU/Asia Based M8 you can try firewater but be aware it may not complete the S-Off process successfully if you have an EU/Asia based M8, if you want the GPE experience simply download a custom recovery (TWRP/Philz CWM) then flash GPE Rom only, do not attempt to use RUU GPE as that requires S-Off.

Roll back to 4.4.4 from 5.0.1 OTA!

You can successfully roll back to 4.4.4 via 5.0.2.

Hopefully we can get an AT&T Note 4 lollipop stock odin.tar to flash back to that too if necessary.
I'd love to see a L odin.tar for this. My phone fails update everytime so I'm either going to need to odin it or go to the Samsung experience shop.
So what happens when everybody updates to lollipop if that updates the bootloader even if you flashback to 4.4.4 if they come out with root for the 4.4.4 bootloader won't that mess up the newer bootloader for lolly pop?

But seriously know one knows, you know the risks when updating. If you're waiting for root and its that important to you then wait.

He never accused you of talking trash. He said you are trashing all these threads by copy/pasting the same post into like 5 or 6 different threads. In other words, you're making messes and getting annoying. Ask the question in one thread, and don't spam all Lollipop-related threads. So many threads are active right now anyways, so someone is bound to see your post.

I know alot of people are receiveing the update to 5.0.1 today, i wanted to confirm that i updated to 5.0.1 and i was successfully able to roll back to 4.4.4 VIA Odin. The Integer overflow our devs are working on to root our device is patched in 5.0.1 but we can successfully roll back to 4.4.4!!
This is good as far as rooting goes. we can successfully roll back to 4.4.4 when our Devs release a root exploit.
EDIT: Heres a link to the stock at&t firmware,

Upgrade to Latest Firmware help

Hey all,
First, let me apologize for being that guy. The one who asks a stupid question where the fitting response is "read the damn thread." That said, I'm having a hard time figuring this out. I've read a number of threads and don't fully understand how to get this done.Coming from a Nexus 5 where flashing was very straightforward, so please be gentle.
I'm currently running a stock, rooted, unlocked, and S-ON Htc 10. I would like to upgrade to the 1.80 firmware without losing my data and settings. Can someone help me out and point me in the right direction? Thanks for the help.

I agree, I'm on the T-Mobile version, still on the stock 1.21 but running a great ROM.
Was'nt hard to unlock and root this phone, and put a on ROM too. But this whole S-Off stuff and firmware updating seems so alien and strange to me.
I also coming from a Nexus and OnePlus before that, those phones easy as 1st grade to just flash a zip in Recovery for a new firmware or modem update. Why is HTC phones so difficult to do such an easy task, and the whole CID thing too, WTF ?

A cid basically determines your phones region/network and when/where to get updates.
S-off is turning the security off so you can do things, like update your firmware not specifically released for your cid. In order to do this your cid needs to be changed (super cid covers all bases) and sometimes your mid (model id)
@AliLaPointe depending on your firmware determines what you should do, but I'd highly recommend going s-off. Saves so much hassle.

Here's what I got going on. Unlocked HTC 10 direct from HTC. Just trying to find the path of least resistance to upgrade to 1.80. Can I run the RUU and restore my data partition to return to what i have now?

Shouldn't see that being a problem so long as you choose the 1.80.617 version.
Make sure you read up though, as I have only ever used s-off so I'm not 100% certain and if it doesn't go how you want, I don't want to be held responsible.

You definitely don't need to S-off to update.
There is a 1.80 ruu in the guide section. But you'll lose all data that way.
You say you're rooted, but do you get an error when you try to check for the ota update in settings? If so, there are ways to fix that without losing data.
Read the twrp FAQ (dev section) did help with restoring to stock in order to take an ota.
Sorry but I'm having trouble understand exactly what problem you're having. There's an abundance of information on here already about taking ota. So maybe if you tell me exactly what you're not understanding I can point you in the right direction.

There is no update for T-Mobile yet. Once there is, it will be very easy for you to update.

Hey Jolly,
Thanks for helping man. Really appreciate it. So what's going on is that I get an error when I try to update via the normal system option. That said, I'm wondering if I can simply run a zip to bring me up to 1.80. Just trying to understand my options.

just so you know. Anyone running on t-mobile HTC 10 that wants to flash the 1.80 firmware has to be S-OFF for it to work.

Current situation for S9 root and recovery for US users

I had pretty much written off Samsung as an option for a new phone due to the locked boot loader and lack of root for the US versions of the phones. The last time I checked only the Exynos versions were unlockable.
I was visiting this forum and saw this section with Snapdragon has been added. But it seems to be limited to the SM-G9650. The US version from T-Mobile is the SM-G965U.
What is the current situation? If I want to operate on T-Mobile, can I purchase the SM-G9650, install TWRP, install T-Mobile stock ROM, and then Magisk?

Correct.
You can use the snapdragon variant sm-g9650 on us carriers.
Myself and several others are already running it on vzwy and TMO right now.
But you can't install a stock TMO rom without some work. There will be custom roms coming very soon.

Thanks for the quick reply.
I'm not opposed to custom ROMs, but I have found that they are often missing Wi-Fi Calling, which I use extensively.
Thus I tend to stick with stock to make sure I have those features..
When you say "some work", what do you mean? Are there any guidelines? I searched this forum for T-Mobile and found this thread that said "you need a patched Odin". Is that all?

By some work I mean you can't just Odin US firmware to a chinese model. You stand the risk of hard bricking.
So you would need a custom rom for sure. As fast as WiFi calling not working? I don't know what rom you've been using but it works on @stang5litre custom rom [emoji41]

I wasn't aware that the SM-G9650 is a chinese version. I've also seen a model SM-G965U1 available on Amazon and elsewhere. They say "unlocked" but don't say whether that means SIM or Bootloader unlocked. If they were bootloader unlocked, then would they be able to use the TMO stock ROM directly?
I'll be watching for the @stang5litre custom rom when it gets posted. That might be the best option.

Yes but they're not unlocked in the sense of a bootloader unlock.
Anytime you see an advertisement that says Unlocked, it typically means carrier/sim unlocked.
Only the 0 model can be bootloader unlocked.

I'm still trying to make a decision on which way to go. I like the S9, but not happy about having to pay full retail price and not get a warranty. My track record for Samsung hardware is pretty bad. I'm on my fifth Note 4 - the first four had various hardware problems from power button failure to "black screen of death" failure, and were replaced under warranty.
I've been thinking about the OnePlus 6T. It's bootloader unlocked and has a more reasonable price, but I'm really turned off by the proprietary charging and lack of 3.5mm headphone.
One question I forgot to ask: Can anyone confirm Band 71 Support for the SM-G9650 and SM-G9600? As I research this question, I'm getting mixed results.

As far as I can tell, the SM-G9600 does not support Band 71.
I don't know which spec sources are authoritative, but I see it is not listed as supported at these sites: phonemore, gsmarena, bhphotovideo, and devicespecifications.com
I cannot find any authoritative source that says B71 is supported.
Summary of my research on the G9600 as the only known root-capable Samsung S9 phone:
Substantially more expensive (than S9 US versions, or OnePlus 6T) --- strike 1
No Warranty --- strike 2
No Band 71 (and many other bands missing) --- strike 3, you're out!
So I guess it's back to OnePlus and trying to hack a way around their fast charging issues....
