Yes a full wipe is needed when coming from another rom, in order to backup your apps you need to use titanium backup.

[Q] Rom backups and restore...

Hi folks... I'm fairly new to flashing ROM's (i know how to flash them and such) but I have a question about backups and restores of roms....I have searched and just dont see the exact wording im looking for.
Ok, So, I have clockwork, and rom manager and have done a backup of my rom.
Here is my question that isnt quite so clear to me.
When I flash a new rom, or say update one that I have where you have to wipe everything.... are these backups here to restore all of your programs and such to where you dont have to go back in and re-download everything when you have a new fresh rom installed.
Id love to try out a bunch of roms.. but I just hate having to go and re-download all of my programs each time I put a new one on... if that is how it has to be then so be it...
I just dont really know exactly what the backups im doing are for, or what they do.
Thanks for your help.

Somewhat. A nandroid backup is a COMPLETE backup of your entire phone at the point you make the backup. All your apps, calls, texts, etc will be exactly like you made the backup. That's the beauty of nandroid backups, you can make one, try a new rom, and if you dont like it, restore your backup and there is no hassle re-installing apps and changing settings.
However, when you install a new rom, you have to wipe everything. So when flashing a new rom, you will not have anything, you will have to re-install your programs.
There are backup programs that will allow you to backup before a wipe and flash when installing a new ROM. You can then restore the user apps and data. You can also restore SOME system data but you have to be careful and it may be a trial and error process when restoring.
I use Titanium Backup. Some people also use MyBackup Root. I found that when I restored some of my apps with MyBackup they would Force Close when I tried to run them after a restore. That has not been the case with Titanium.
I have Titanium set to restore the apps to the original location. That way my apps restore to internal (DATA) or the the SD Card depending on where they were originally installed.
My process when I flash a new ROM:
- Backup all user apps + Data and System Data with Titanium.
- Nandroid Backup using Amon_RA
- Wipe System, Data, Dalvik and Cache
- Flash the ROM
- Reboot
- Create google account, etc.
- Install Titanium from the market.
- Restore user apps + data using titanium
You can also restore some system data. Depending on the ROM (and how different it was from the original) that can cause problems. If that happens go back to wipe and reflash the ROM again without restoring the system data.
I have had no problems restoring things like my SMS Messages and Call Logs. You can get into problems when you start restoring things like system settings or HTC Sense settings, etc.
Thank you both for the replies. This is exactly what i needed to know. I hope this thread helps others with similar questions.
There is one thing. CWM and ROM Manager have a history of not being reliable with backups.
Your best bet is to get Amon Ra and use that to make Nandroids.
4 I always have on my phone are my Stock/Rooted, my last ROM I was on, fully setup, my Current ROM, basic, before I restore and programs or apps/data, and my current ROM all setup.
If I flash a new ROM, I can just delete my older complete setup.

[Q] Factory reset rooted DHD

Hello all.
I have had my DHD for over a year now and I rooted it as soon as I could. My reasons for rooting were to remove some of the stock installed apps (facebook, stocks etc). After a year though now my phone is jammed full of crap so i want to do a factory reset and wipe the phone clean and start from scratch. Am I able to do this having rooted?
Once I have cleaned the phone (by whatever means) i will be looking into the customs roms to try and change the look and feel of my phone for hopefully another happy year with my DHD.
Thanks in advance
Craig
Anyone able to help?
You have a lot of ways to do that...
one of them is to backup your apps and contacts and go to recovery, then wipe the phone and reinstall last rom or other roms...
my idea is to change your rom and try someone else...
and enjoy you phone...
so finally:
do a backup, go to recovery, do a wipe ( you can use android revelotion super wipe), reinstall rom or try another rom, and finally...enjoy...
Merry Christmas buddy...
A few things that I do.
Check out some rom screenshots and threads to see which roms interest you.
Backup your current APN to your sdcard with APN Backup & Restore so you can restore it with future roms. (So that you can make sure you are using the correct login/password etc. to connect to your carrier's data network.)
Make sure that APN Backup & Restore's apk is also on your sdcard so that you can install it from your card and not the Android Market.
Get Rom Manager on your phone so that you can easily reboot into recovery when you are ready to flash a new rom.
Make sure you have the new rom on your SD card waiting to be flashed.
Then when you are ready, reboot into recovery with Rom Manager.
Then once in ClockworkMod Recovery choose wipe data/factory reset and do that.
Then in advanced - wipe dalvik cache and then wipe battery stats.
(Then in mounts and storage - I also format system.)
Then install zip from sdcard - choose zip from sdcard - choose rom file and flash away.
Be patient as the first boot up from flashing a rom can take a long time.
Once it boots up - disable data. Install APN Backup & Restore from your sdcard. Then delete the APNs that come with the new rom. Restore your original carrier APN from the backup you made. Then you can connect to the net with the correct settings and not get charged for the wrong data connection regardless of your contract. (I admit I'm sensitive to this, as it cost me a $1000 in data fees a few years ago here in Japan with Windows Mobile and SoftBank when I flashed and used the wrong APN regardless of my unlimited packet contract.)
Anyway, these are things I do which you might consider.
I don't usually lose root doing the sequence above.
Of course read the rom thread main pages to see if anything special applies.
Good luck. There are a few rom screenshots in my sig. I currently use MIUIAndroid. (It's updated every week.)
Good luck.
ps. You might want to format your sdcard before you do any of the above too, just to really clean things up. Don't forget to backup your data to your PC or something if you do.
Sorry - I didn't see the post above this one..

Thanks for the info. I first formatted the SD, then backed up contacts, sms and apps. What do I press when I boot into recovery?
Once i have perforformed the wipe am I able to to the reload my stock ROM before i look into flashing a custom one?

I will make sure I back up my APN then also. Anything else worth backing up?
I have had a look at the screenshots shown on your site, that helped thanks, but as said before, am i able to reload the stock rom, basically return to where i am now, but with a blank canvas?
Thanks again
Any pointers?
I can't remember but I think a simple factory reset via your current original rom will give you the blank canvas you want, but I think you'll lose root.
Someone else please confirm this or not? Do we lose root by doing a simple factory reset?
If that's the case and you don't mind losing root (until you root again) and you want the original rom you currently have then just do a factory reset via phone settings. The other stuff in the other post is for if you are changing rom completely. If you are going to use the same original rom you use now which came with your phone, then the APN settings will be the same and will be there again after you reset.
No you will not lose root!

[Q] ROM Backup

Hi guys, quick question. I want to start flashing other roms but how to i make a backup of my current ROM?
Do i just enter CMW then do a backup from there?Does that backup mean the whole rom is backed up or just the apps and firmware? Is there somethign else i need to do?
Let me know, thanks in advance
That's what you do. It's a nandroid backup, so your complete system is backed up.
sinksterĀ©
Just make sure you :
- DONT wipe out data and
- DONT make a factory reset
before making a backup
Thanks guys =) cant wait to flash Roms now
All The Best
Doing a nandroid is essential as it's an image of your phone you can go back to at any time.
I also would recommend downloading a backup app so you can save just your data and apps, it makes changing ROMs easier as you can just restore these onto your new ROM.

Backup question

Hi guys,
So Im not happy with my current rom and want to change to a different one but I dont want to have to start again with a blank phone. So is this the correct way to backup?
- Run a full Titanium backup and copy the backup file to my laptop.
- Factory wipe my phone and flash the new rom.
- Restore from Titanium backup.
Will that put the phone back to how I had it last with all my apps but running on the new rom? Or am I asking too much?
Or will I need to reinstall everything but then restore the backup so I havent lost anything? I really want to avoid reinstalling all apps and loosing progress on my games etc.
Any help appreciated!
No need to do all that.
The SD isn't wiped during this process.
Just follow my guide linked in my sig.
Post 2 details flashing a rom.
Thanks for replying so quickly! I think I get the idea now from your guide. So the Nandroid is just for emergency, I dont need to restore that unless I get a dead phone etc?
so the factory wipe doesnt delete everything on the SD on the GNex? So the Titanium backup will still be sitting there even after a factory wipe? I just want to be sure!
Followed the guide and all worked ok, thanks Jubakuba!
I must say the AOKP rom is amazing, so fast ana many features.

[Q] Right & Best way to full clean install / Update ROM?

So I'm updating to the latest version of the @Danvdh AOSP GPE ROM, and I want to know / make sure this is the right / best way.
got the latest version of the ROM and flashing w TWRP,
so I made a Nandroid backup, and I backed up all my apps w TiBU (Titanium Backup),
Next I would do a full wipe (system & delvic), flash the new rom, then restore all my apps with TiBU right?
What about the system settings? is there a way to back them up so that I can just "restore" them.
If I make a full backup with TiBU and restore it would it attempt to restore the previous version of the ROM, or would because they are diff versions would it just fail? Or is it something I just have to reset everything. And obviously I have to redo my screens and stuff,
Is there any way to save my settings for gravity box and xposed framework?
and feel free to inform me of anything else I want to make sure to do, no matter how obvious it may seem.
This is my only device so I need to make sure I get it right the first time and as quickly as possible.
Thanks.

BTW I posted this in "general" on purpose hoping it would be useful for anyone else updating or clean flashing betw ROMs
For titanium backup, if your mods are in xposed and gravity box, backing up with titanium backup will retain all the settings in those apps, so once you restore them, everything will be back the way you want it. Same thing for the home screens, just back up the launcher app. I personally don't like restoring data on system apps since they tend to go awry, that's why I use a different launcher.
After you do a full wipe and clean install, you can also go back to TWRP and restore only the data from the Nandroid backup. I don't do that because, again, it might cuz unwanted bugs and more annoyance.
I dirty flashed 4.4.3 on top of my 4.4.2 rom since I was too lazy to set everything up again, and so far I haven't seen any bug. You might wanna consider that route.

Exactly the info I was looking for thanks so much.
And just to be clear, when you say "dirty" flash, you mean just thru TWRP like you would an update.zip, or Xposed or Gravity Box, correct? just put on SD and flash and go.
Yes. Basically flash it on top of the existing software. It's usually not recommended as data may be corrupted having been overridden, but 4.4.3 is just a small update over 4.4.2 so I guess it's okay.
