I have a 64 gb micro sd card and i have a lot of stuff on my sd card to the point that it is almost full. I've been interested in the oneplus 3 for quite a while, mainly cuz of the community support and is more powerful than my phone that I'm currently using (Alcatel onetouch idol 3). I really want to get this phone soon but the only main gripe about this phone is that it doesn't have expandable storage. I was wondering if there is an alternative solution for the micro sd card for the oneplus 3? Ik that there is otg but it would be a hassle to carry it all the time so i would like to know if there is a better alternative? Thx for reading my post

Not sure what you mean, USB OTG and cloud storage are gonna be your only options besides using the internal storage.
I'd recommend putting most of your stuff on the internal storage and carrying a USB-C flash drive for the rest if need be

It's a bummer that the oneplus 3 doesn't have expandable storage but I'm still buying this phone for christmas ????????. Btw which cloud storage service do u recommend me that is free? It can have paying options but mostly free.
I've got an USB C microSD Card Adapter, it's really small and works flawless. Using a 128GB card with it to watch 3D films. And yes it's possible even with a 1080p Amoled screen

I wish they had given a hybrid slot. I dont use two sims and having the option to expand memory would have been so awesome.

There are some pretty decent options out there; there's a fairly new one I have yet to really try out called Degoo - 100GB free. https://degoo.com/g/f6Xw9M9

Mega - 50GB
hubiC - 25GB
Personally my main cloud goto is Dropbox - only cause it was my first and is easily accessible from any platform. Also, I have 55GB ( was able to get 50gb from some sort of promotion a while back) - if it was the standard 2GB or whatever it is, I would probably have moved on.
You could also look into getting something like a SanDisk Wireless Stick, while it would be something you would have to carry around, it could be a bit more convenient.

I agree with you, but it's 400 dollars with flashship specs so they had to cut corners somewhere. But then again the zte axon 7 is also 400 dollars with same specs (except the ram) and they have expandable storage. So idk why oneplus remove expandable storage in favor of dual sim. But i digress xD

Google Drive offers 15GB, Box offer 50GB.
I prefer to use more mainstream cloud storage solutions since less well-known ones with more storage tend to have worse performance and/or randomly go out of business (see Copy.com)
I've been using an OTG card reader and thumb drive and find it more convenient than having an internal sd card since you don't have to worry about removing the back cover or anything like that.

Yea, but the free option is most likely not large enough for the purpose you wish to use it for - so you will need to go with a paid option or find some promotion that'll get you more space.

I have 1TB of OneDrive with my Office subscription, so it's my go-to cloud option.
For OTG, I picked up an Aukey set of two microUSB to Type C adapters and an OTG adapter - no cable, just a solid little adapter - and I've had 64GB USB sticks on it with no issues, even the Logitech USB headset from my computer at work that we use for Skype connected to my OP3 just fine - even the inline volume controls worked! https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B01EWD939O/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1 is the link to the set I bought. I think i am going more towards a usb c to micro sd card adapter cuz it's less clutter and i don't have to move my files into another sd card, but your otg adapter might be useful as well.
I also have a very very tiny microSD/USB adapter that works very well. I'm all about having adapters for everything! But yeah, a dedicated Type C microSD reader would work well for what you want here.

just a heads up... did a search on this forum for "32GB" and didnt find anything. didnt bother searching "microsdhc" since so many people would have a different way of typing it out that it would be near impossible to find on a search.
anyways, Verizon Wireless seems to have the SanDisk 32GB microSDHC cards IN STOCK and is selling them for $99 online with free overnight shipping. most places havent had stock EVER since it was released a couple of months ago. original retail price on them began at $240 or something.
unfortunately, these are Class 2 only, but generally it's not the card that's the bottleneck when it comes to speed on your device. i popped mine in this morning when it arrived and have had no problems with reading at all; 350mb XviD avi rips of TV shows like Rescue Me and 550mb XviD avi rips of Top Gear all play back flawlessly on my Samsung Vibrant.
write speeds have a bit to be desired, but i cant complain due to faster cards being unavailable. compared to my Class 6 16GB card, it has no ill effects from what i have so far observed while in the device.
cliffs: $99 for a SanDisk 32GB microSDHC from verizonwireless.com with free overnight shipping. normal price from them is $150, but is on special for now... the original deal was $50 off with the purchase of a Droid X, but that seems to have changed for a limited time. cheapest i can find it anywhere else using Google Shopping is $140 before tax+shipping.

I think they meant to point out that unless you want to carry around a tiny breakable easy to lose 16gb card in ur pocket or bag and switch out when you need to, having 32gb in one card is more convenient which combined with how newly available the card is, it is quite cheap for the price. You only pay a bit more per GB in this case, normally you'd pay 2-3x more in the beginning for the new highest capacity in flash memory.

What would someone possibly need on a 32 gb that cant fit on a16 plus having access to any pc you plug your phone into plus another 15 approx gigs internal?

I know at least for me, there's never enough space. Unless they somehow manage to offer Terabyte microSD cards. Even the, I'm sure I'd find a sure for it.
Music, movies, games, ebooks, audiobooks, work files, space for pictures and videos, etc.
Do you NEED to have that much stuff on you? No, but it's nice to have access to everthing and worry less about space.
I know I have 14gb of music on my card and that's mostly just ONE genre of music. I have over 150gb of music. And yes, I do listen to all 14gb that I do have on there. It's good to have access to lots of music for parties and get togethers. Remote access is not always a perfect solution.
Again, I don't NEED all the space, but I sure as heck will use it when I have it.
If I had more space, I'd also partition space on my phone for portable apps. Having access to FireFox, GIMP, Openoffice, 7zip, etc wherever I go is a huge plus.

Do you need to be plugged into the PC to get the files off of it? I assume you do, but even if you didn't, think of all the battery power wasted to get the files when you want them. e.g. let's say I am on a bus or stuck waiting for something and want to watch a show or movie on my pc on my phone. I'd need to get on 3g, hope it can all stream fast enough, and the battery would run out super fast using 3g and playing a video all at once.
Also as for the 32gb 16gb argument. I might be able to work with limited storage, but I personally could fill about 5tb or more with anime and movies and tv shows that I'd like, and if I could carry all of that on my phone, and be able to select anything I want immediately and have it right there, that would be amazingly convenient. Therefore as far as I am concerned 16gb, 32gb, it's never really enough, people can always fill more space. However I will deal with having only a 16gb card on my Epic 4G when it comes out.

i can fit 20GB of movies, TV shows, and music on a single card without having to connect my phone to a computer to add more.
THAT wont fit on a 16GB card. i dont carry my laptop wherever i go, therefore i dont really have access to any data beyond the 16GB card. maybe you are always near your computer, but i'm not.

i set the removable card slot as the save point for the camcorder app and recorded nearly 7 minutes of video with lots of movement. no issues when recording.
i then played it back using both the built-in video player and eStrong File Explorer's built-in video player and experienced no dropped frames, freezing, or slowdowns, nor did the audio and video go out of sync.
i'm a hobbyist photographer so reliable, fast memory cards are something i'm always on the lookout for. because of this, i've sampled a lot of different brands in the past (i'm always testing different brands to try and find cheaper alternatives for my camera) and have found that SanDisk flash memory cards are consistently much faster than their rated spec. this result with the 32GB microSD is probably no different nor that unusual, based on my previous experience.
if i have some free time this morning and will do some read/write tests of the SanDisk 32GB Class 2 card alongside the original Samsung 2GB card that the Vibrant came with, a SanDisk 2GB Class 2 card, and a SanDisk 16GB Class 6 card i used in my HD2.

i really dont understand how anyone can manage to COMPLAIN about more data space, or that someone bothered to share a good deal they had found. either you people lead unhappy lives or you're lashing out because you're unable to afford one... because there's no logical explanation you can create to support an argument against a 32GB card except price.

the microSDHC spec allows for up to 32GB. it's just taken this long (released in the beginning of this year, or so) for a company to create a chip dense enough to reliably manufacture a 32GB microSD card.
the new spec, microSDXC, will cover sizes ranging from 32GB up to 2TB in the Secure Digital format. 64GB SDXC cards are already available from Panasonic and SanDisk.
Hi everyone, first post. I am a proud owner of the Archos 43 IT. So, I recently acquired the usb host cable from Deal Extreme.
Now, I only have two usb stick (8, and 16gb) neither of which work. My first intention was to put all of wikipedia on one flash drive (wikipedia is about 14.8 gb) so I could have everything on a portable screen. My second intention was to get an external hard drive (large capacity for movies on the HDTV), but there is a looot of misconception of what kind of drives work (NFTS, USB powered, etc) so I would love someone to spell out two things: What sixteen gigabyte usb drives are confirmed to work, and what sort of hard drive would the community recommend?

Does the drive matter, or is it more the format of the drive? I have a bunch of USB drives that are all formatted either FAT32 or NTFS and they all seem to work.

Well both of mine are fat32. I think its more an issue of powering the drives. From what I understand the Archos doesn't really give all that much juice to what's plugged in the host.

Ah, yes it works just fine. I'v been using a USB keyboard with a trackball via the adapter, and I just plugged in my brother's external hard drive with a wall adapter (I don't have an external hd), and it worked great. So its just the flash drives, I just want to know if anyone has a 16gb drive they own that works via usb host.

Well, it says its a Data Traveler 2.0 under the hardware IDs. I don't think they even sell this model anymore. I bought it from Microcenter.com at the time.
Have you tried a micro sd card reader dongle with a 16GB micro sd card?

Well according to your signature you have a 101 tablet, which has a full-size USB port that delivers more power to the device and has much wider drive compatibility. The smaller devices (43 and 70) provide less USB power and few devices work with them.
We need to get a list going of confirmed working peripherals with each device...

Everytime I see this I trip over the line that wikipedia is 14.8 gigs. I know this is totally off-topic, but wha!??! ("the compressed file enwiki-20100130-pages-meta-history.xml.bz2 is over 280.3 GB in size (in 7z format is over ~31 GB), and decompresses to several (>5) Terabytes of text.")

I've been thinking abit during christmas and searching ebay after the ultimate product for theese new devices that has micro USB with OTG capabilities.
I wish for a small OTG cable with built in micro SD card reader. Now I use an OTG cable and a small reader which ofcourse gets a bit lumpy.
With todays micro SD card readers integrated into a USB shell it shoud be easy to make it as a msall unit that goeas straight into the micro usb port, eiterh as a mall dongle with all integrated or as a coonnector with up to 2 inches of cable.
Or has someone already made this and I ca't find it ?
Thats the set up I'm using. There is no 'integrated' version I can think of but I'm trying to strip mine down and integrate them into a case.

A case with integrated microSD a great idea. Would be perfect for a GN, especially my GSM version haha.
Maybe Radio shack has some small case for projects and we can put the innards in a small form factor.
okay this isn't exactly what your looking for, but it's my setup and it works perfectly.
i'm using this cable. there are cheaper ones available but i wanted one that had comments saying it worked. (the cheaper one also goes the other direction.)

does work on widows 7 and does it support 32gb hc sd???
It's not too big of a deal for me since mine is an adapter vs a cord.

works perfect on windows 7. just shows up like a flash drive would. as far as 32GB. can't say since my max card i own is a 16.
*edit* ah just saw the other post lol. Good to know a 32gig works. i'll be picking one up eventually now.
Do you think your sdcard reader draws less energy from the phone than a USB stick?
It's not handy for me using my old big USB stick and your solution seems better.

i can pretty much guarantee you that the microsd reader and card use less power than a USB stick.
i've confirmed a 16GB card, and another user has confirmed a 32GB card.
But in my flash drive tests, NOTHING over 8GB would work. i tried 3 different brand 16Gb and 2 different brand 32Gb and none worked. Additionally no portable hard drives worked either.
pretty much confirms that the cards use a lot less power than the flash drives.

What about formatting? If I recall correctly, the phone won't read anything that is NTFS formatted, as its not in the kernel.

External hard drives require a startup power, that's why some of them have 2 USB connections. Even though they should only require one connection to work, depending on the computer you are connecting to, you may need to connect 2 USB ports to supply enough power for the hdd to spin up. After that it works fine.
I doubt the GN will ever supply the necessary power for an external HDD to work though. Best to stick to FAT32 flash drives and SD cards.
I have successfully connected a fat32 16Gb flash drive to my GN with a USB OTG adapter without any problems. Just make sure it's formatted as fat32 and not NTFS.
@esoomenona: i tried both fat32 and NTFS, on 16GB neither worked. my 32gb are all NTFS. did not know about the formatting kernel though. hope my kernel supports it since i plan on formatting my incoming 32gb microsd to ntfs.
@flakz0r: figured as much about the hard drives. my transformer can run it, so now it just needs to get ICS so it can play 720p videos without lag.

You can bug the kernel developers to try to add it for you?
This is a pretty neat idea, and is compatible with the new Droid line. For $12 you get a coin-sized micro SD adapter that attaches to your key chain. Supports up to 64Gb micro SD cards.

I got a pair of them, too. I use them mainly for movie storage for my Nexus 7. You can use a 64GB card, but you (usually) have to reformat it as FAT32. The 64GB cards come formatted with exFAT, which isn't widely supported by Android devices.

No idea. I haven't noticed much of a difference. What are you trying to do? The main reason to use an adapter like this seems to be to play videos stored on a microSD card. I would strongly expect that the screen and CPU/GPU would be dominating the power usage in that case.

Unfortunately, the 4.4 update removed USB-OTG support. You can't mount USB sticks anymore (unless you root and install StickMount). However, you could use a third party application like Total Commander with the USB Stick plugin. You still can't mount the card, but you can access files through the Total Commander app.

It's a flash drive with a USB 2.0 connector on one side, and a micro USB OTG connector on the other. It's awesome. I do TWRP backups to this drive and it works like a charm.
Also handy for storing tons of videos.
FYI. I got USB OTG support working on my Droid Maxx. I'm rooted, but otherwise haven't done anything out of the ordinary to the phone. I don't think you have to be rooted to get it to work, but I have no way to verify that myself.
Anyway, the instructions are over in the Moto-X forum, and they work fine for the Maxx.

The trick is to create a shortcut to the "Qualcomm Settings" app, run it, and enable USB OTG support there.

TWRP would not recognize the external SD. I had to offer use CWM.

The Newest version of twrp supports ext sd . helps out a ton when you want to back up your current setup just incase you do something stupid.

I saw it. You have to carry a USB adapter to connect meenova to PC, i'm not happy with it. That's why i prefer to have microusb+usb device.
And the SP drive is available at local store, while for meenova i have to wait for about 2-4 weeks or even more to be delivered.

I just recently got a PQI Connect 203 off Ebay because I was finding it annoying to carry around a USB adapter with my Meenova. This thing is amazing. IT is very small, works perfectly with cases on my Moto G and is much cheaper than the Meenova. It also uses microSD cards, which is what I was looking for.
How does the Kingston 32GB USB OTG (DT MicroDuo) fare in practice?
I might get one of those or SanDisk Ultra Dual USB Drive or Transcend JetFlash 380S. Are there any differences between them except perhaps the price and personal taste?

I'm using Sandisk Dual (16gb) drive right now, bought it because they use and manufacture their own flash chip. Plus the textured body and black and red color looks wicked. Tried using my friend's Transcend OTG drive which is larger by a small margin, and it's write speed is almost the same as the sandisk.
If you don't mind getting a bigger OTG drive, you might want to look at Corsair GO drive. It's usb 3.0 when plugged in a PC.

Performance is poor for long operations, when it gets hot, for reading and writing too. Everything else, fine...
Plus one vote for the Sandisk one.

Yes, win won't see it, I'm using linux, sorry.
On the other hand Moto g sees only 1st partition, so I created 30gb fat 32 public as 1st partition and the rest is 2nd partition ext4 encfs'd.

it's a headache. supposedly there is a flip removable/fixed bit (RMB), but not on every drive, or you can modify your win driver so it recognizes all removable media as fixed drives. i'll look for a simpler solution
