Every few hours, my phone goes into a mode where the volume buttons control the media slider instead of the ringtone slider, even if no media app is running (in fact, even if I close all open apps). Only rebooting restores the volume buttons to their usual function, controlling the ringtone slider.
I wouldn't care about this oddity. But it always happens at the same time as the serious sound-feedback lag problem that's documented here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/note-7/help/sound-feedback-lag-replacement-note-7-t3467475
It seems likely then that whatever is causing the slider oddity is also causing the lag problem. Can anyone suggest how to figure out what app or service is making the phone think there's some media in use?
Again, this mode persists even with all apps closed. And it starts up at seemingly random times, anywhere from 1 to 30 hours after the last reboot, which makes it very hard to pin down a cause.

Sometimes I accidently turn ringer volume down low (not mute) and miss an important call.
I’ve found apps such as Ringer Volume (Android-Lab) to reset it at given times, however they all wants ‘full Internet access’ don’t know if I like that with an app that will be constantly running and with my limited data allowance?
Another option would be a taskbar icon showing my volume level; however I cannot find any such widget.
It’s not mute that give me the problem it’s when I decrease the Ring Volume sometimes by accident when holding my Desire HD, with CyanogenMod 7.
Anyone got any suggestions on this?
there's an app called Settings Profile that u can set rules to do stuff, so u can set a rule to keep invoking a certain profile at whatever interval you want. The Lite version can only set 1 rule so I am not sure if that's good enough for you or not.
Hi Lukesky, thanks for taking the time to help.

I think I had looked at Setting Profiles before but just had another look and my concern with it is that it takes Full Internet Access, perhaps I’m being paranoid but I only have 20Mb of data per day and then the price per Mb goes up dramatically, let alone when I’m roaming, OK I know I could turn Data off if I wanted. So do you think the Lite App will be using data via its internet access?
here u go buddy...its simple quick and fast.... i use it all the time and place as widget
Thanks Lalitehgal, I appreciate your help however unless I’m mistaken this widget has no option for an auto timed volume increase, and my problem is I sometimes do not realize I have decreased the volume while holding the phone.
@richardsoffice: in my opinion you should definitely not be required to adjust ringtone or notification volume manually. Because once - in office - you are satisfied, but then - on the street - you just don't hear anything. The phone should adjust the ringtone volume automatically based on ambient noise and phone position (pocket/out of pocket/table/...). Check out an app called IntelliRing.
Manually adjusting ringtone volume does not do any harm if your ringtone volume is managed by IntelliRing. So you can accidentally adjust volume as you want
After rooting my v.6.1 KF, manually updating to 6.2, and getting Gapps, Market, Go Launcher, WidgetLocker, etc., working my notification volume now goes to zero after setting it to > zero. Also, when choosing a notification sound, even with volume turned up, you get no notification sound. Other sound is fine (Pandora, for example).
Any thoughts? I have a 'mute' icon for volume in the upper right notification area (where WiFi is). Seems like this was not an issue last night and might have been mucked up by WidgetLocker. I'll be trying a workaround based on that theory later today but for now work calls :\
EDIT: Solved! See below.
There is an app called "Volume Control" that will let you set the various types of notifications individually. e.g. it separates notification from media from system. Very helpful.
Just had to deal with a similar problem.
As somebody else on this forum stated, the probable culprit is Widgetlocker.
I had it installed for a while, played with the settings and unintentionally changed the ringtone to mute (the right slider on the lockscreen). Had to re-install the app (had it uninstalled), changed the ringtone back to normal and voila - notification sounds are back.
Oh my God I can't believe that after all the relatively complex things I've done over the past two days that my answer to the one problem which kicked my butt hard enough to post about it was "you broke it yourself" lolol. The WidgetLocker volume slider was the problem. I had slid it to mute and never thought about it again. Everything's back to normal. Can't wait to get TWRP and CM7 running over the holidays!
Thanks for this! It made me look at the icon I thought meant "Mute" and really meant "Do Not Disturb". Turning that off brought the sound back. Thank God. Lol. I was also looking for complicated issues and blamed Amazon. Sorry!
Are there any apps out there that can replace the standard on screen volume slider? I don't want something visible all the time, but I want something that has some kind of a scale, whether that be 1-15 or 1-100 I don't much care, I just want to have a scale available so I can see what my volume is without having to randomly guess.
I have found plenty of widgets and apps, but I want something that will appear when changing volume, let me know if my volume is 20% or 50% etc. and then disappear once I am done changing the volume. So far nothing I have found will allow me to do that.
Thanks.
Hey,
Over the past few weeks I've been having some issues with my alert slider. When I slide it, it keeps my phone on silent mode and switching it will not change its mode. Sometimes restarting my phone will allow it to be loud again but not all the time.
Now my up volume won't work to change the ring volume when the bar at the top of the phone shows I can slide it to the right but then right before your eyes it slides back down again.
I've tried it on YouTube and the volume works as it should up and down with no issues.
I've tried multiple phones wipes, cache clearances and different ROMs and the problem is still there.
Is the problem with the alert slider flex it's self?
Thanks.
So out of no where my phone has just been lowering randomly every 5 to 10 mins and it's definitely not a faulty volume button it sets it to an exact level every single time. Also when connected to Bluetooth in my car instead of lowering volume it changes to only the left channel speakers working till I reset Bluetooth. So idk how to fix this
Some crazy app?

Ultimately, you'll have to find the app and deal with it (if I'm right that it is an app).
