I have had the HTC 10 pretty much since launched and rooted on day one.
I use the phone regularly but haven't really kept up with the goings one since then.
Just wanted to know if there are steps that need to be taken before or after the "software update available" notification comes along. I've been dismissing it for now because I didn't really have time to sit down and investigate what I would need to do.
Would someone be able to point me in the right direction if there are any steps I need to take or if it even really matters, if I can just install the update without worrying.
Thanks in advance.
If anyone needs any specifics I can see about providing that too.

To take the full OTA you need an unmodified system (i.e. no root or other mods) and stock recovery. Lots of guides on this, like here:

Go to point 7 in the above FAQ

No problem, the "tricky" part is to find a stock system image backup of your exact software, if you didn't do one yourself before rooting. Just search around the forum, it's probably posted somewhere.
HTC has a tool you can use that makes it super easy. Google Search "ruu HTC 10". It's model specific. They say you should lock your boot loader before running under Rom Update Utility (ruu). I've done it both ways and it worked beautifully. It really is just a few guided clicks and back to stock. Good luck. I love my 10!

Those are leaked files from HTC. It isn't granted that one has been leaked for his particular CID/MID. Thus this information would be needed, as well as his S-ON/S-OFF state and current firmware number. In addition the RUU has to be of the firmware number he's currently using, or above, as elsewise the mentioned RUU won't work at all. ALL leaked RUUs can be found here in XDA already, only question is if one would fit his needs. If no RUU has been leaked you'd have to do the restore with an untouched system as written above. So this answer might not help in this case.

Not all RUUs are leaks though and HTC does make certain of them easily accessible. For example, you can find the RUU for multiple devices, including the 10, and various carriers in the U.S here:

Give or take a few days, yes - so long as you've done the complete RUU conversion. If you've just flashed a custom GPe ROM then no
and have the stock recovery installed
Sorry, I'm kind of a noob at this... what exactly is the ruu and stock recovery?
Read, read, read !!!

If you're not sure what all that means, then you need to read a LOT more before trying anything on your phone. I've been lurking and reading on XDA for over 4 years and the most common problems occur when a new owner jumps in before truly studying the available information.
Go to the general Android forum and read all about the OS and the "strange" words you see in the posts.
Come back to the M8 forum and read until you really understand the difference between RUU, ROMs, Recovery, fastboot, ADB and all the other nuances of the M8.
If you don't know how to do it without a "kit" then I don't suggest you use a kit. It's a convenience but should not be the only process you know how to use.

I definitely will start reading more! Where does one find this kit? And is that all that I have left to do to get the updates? Flash the stock recovery, and the RUU?
Alright everyone, I did search for a similar topic before creating this thread, but I found none. If I missed it, please link me to it. Thanks!
So I'm about to trade my T-Mobile LG G3 for a T-Mobile HTC One M8. I'd like to convert it over to a GPE. Are there any specific things that I have to know about the device (software version etc.) before I make the trade?
For example, was there a recent software update that stopped us from being able to convert it into a GPE device?
Thanks in advance guys. I really appreciate it.

Not sure about a software update preventing it. So long as you can achieve S-Off, I believe it can be converted. I did mine some time ago, found that I missed Sense 6 a lot and my signal strength was pretty low. Radios from GPE are compatible with T-Mobile LTE but the GPE system doesn't work as well with T-mobile signal. Even tried changing radios, no luck. I'd suggest trying a GPE rom that you can flash over the standard rom to see if you like it. Its much easier to flash a sense rom back to the phone than it is to convert a GPE'd phone back to sense.

Got it. If memory serves, you can go to the HTC site and request the bootloader be unlocked, correct? So as far as rooting and unlocking the bootloader, it's a walk in the park, no matter the software version, right?

Yes you can unlock the bootloader through HTCDEV. When you go through the process make sure to choose "all other devices" instead of One (M8). I had trouble with my code until I chose all other devices. Might be fixed by now. I believe to root you have to have S-Off which is only possible through Sunshine unless something has changed. Sunshine will cost you $25. There may be a method of rooting which will allow you bypass S-Off now. Haven't looked into it for a while.

Just doing my part, and trying my best. Most of all, I refuse to answer a question with "OMG this has been answered eleventy-million times!!! USE GOOGLE!!!" Not saying your question was answered before, just having a vent.
In case you're interested, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2708589 is the thread I used to make my conversion and it worked exactly as they said it would. Just try a GPE rom first before you do the full conversion. I was sure I would like GPE much better than sense...and I was as wrong as I could be.
Hi,
terribly sorry to bother you guys!
I recently bought an M9 (Belgium, no carrier) and rooted it with the help of this youtube video /watch?v=rOHN8byHAzk
works fine, it's rooted.
The thing is: i did updates before doing the root, as i unlocked bootloader everything was lost/deleted, at the time (4a.m), with my brain half asleep i didn't think about doing the updates again before performing the actual root. Now i keep getting the "system update available" message and can't get rid of it.
It'll keep popping up every few hours, obviously i can't install them because i arrive back at twrp recovery.
Android version 5.0.2
Kernel version 3.10.49-g5c16a62
I turned software updates off in the "about" section in settings, to no avail. I keep getting the message that updates are available. Downloading them and then proceeding to remove the downloaded files don't solve it.
I'm a total noob at this, but (hopefully) not a complete idiot. If there are any steps i can take to get rid of this constantly popping up, please advise me:fingers-crossed:
There's more than one possibility to proceed. Could you provide the output of the "htc_fastboot getvar all" command, when M9 is in download mode (without IMEI and Serial no.). I'd like to point you into the right direction.
Send by the swarm intelligence of my coffee machine ?.
Thanks for taking the time!
It's in download mode, i've got my command prompt open but it says "htc_fastboot is not recognized as an internal or external command, program or batchfile"
In all honesty just pay for s-off and you can flash an unsigned zip and be done with it.
Otherwise you need to get back to official status to flash the update. Pita to be honest.

Honestly, i just rooted my last phone through good old towelroot without ever having to touch or change anything else. I should not have touched stuff i know nothing of to begin with.
I appreciate you guys taking the time to reply, i'm gonna find some sites to teach me more about this, if you have anything that could help me, feel free to share, because i literally know 0.

Basically, there is a safety feature in HTC otas now that prevents them from running unless your phone is 100% stock. So being rooted, it won't run. There are only two ways forward, find the RUU files for your carrier and install them, or get s-off and update manually. There are multiple threads on how to do all this in the General forum. Read there before doing anything else. HTC phones work differently from other handsets that have to be hacked to achieve root. There is an official path, but how you do it matters.

Just in case anyone has the same issue (i like to end on a positive note =D ) :
The easiest working solution i found for the issue is to go to the Apps management (Settings, apps), go to "All", select "Updater" and then clear data.
No pop ups so far.

Ok, same phone, AT&T HTC M9, now S-Off, TWRP 3.0.2.0, 3.38.502.41 firmware. Tried ARHD 20.0, had no service, flashed boot.img, got service but lost wifi. Tried Viperone M9 4.3, same issue. ICE, same issue. If I have Wifi, I have no service. If I flash boot.img, I get service, but lose Wifi. I'm pulling my hair out right now, as I've searched high and low and I've been looking at my PC and M9 for about 14 hours now. Anyone have any insight?
Does the rom match your firmware version?
Edit: just read your other thread and replied.
The firmware versions are off so I wouldn't trust it. Htc's are crap when it comes to recovery so be careful.
I have stayed on 6.0 with root and s-off, without xposed for a very good reason!.
If I were you, as I said in your other thread, would be going back to stock at this point and hoping for the best that the damage isn't permanent.
Its too risky to mess with htc devices. They don't have an app like odin or one even half as good.
You have a beast of a phone as is. You don't need to beef it up any more than it is.

It's a bit of a long story as to why I decided to root. It's not damaged by any means, if I flash the ROM posted here (https://forum.xda-developers.com/at...ficial-att-3-38-502-12-rom-7-01-2016-t3409354), Wifi and data both work flawlessly, despite it having a different firmware number. The whole ROM is actually decent, but lacks all the customization I want, and for some reason, headphones only work on one side. I hoped this fix would be simple, as so many people seem to run custom ROMs and I'm just over here yelling at my inanimate object

None of the things manlavi did, so far, was risky. The phone didn't take any damage. All he did was flashing a rom that is incompatible with his firmware like many did before him. The only difference is that HTC seems to have changed some more parts of the firmware with the latest AT&T update so that not only the boot image is incompatible. But that only makes it harder to make the rom compatible. The phone doesn't get damaged in any kind.
If he had flashed a firmware that is incompatible with his phone that would be a whole different story. However, before he opened this thread his phone wasn't S-OFF so he wouldn't have been able to do so even if he wanted.

The headphones might be broken. Did you check whether they work correctly with a different device?
As already said in the other thread you could convert your phone to another GSM variant of the M9. You would need to change your CID and your MID and then you could flash a RUU with a different SKU. However, you need to be aware that you'll lose every AT&T specific tweaks and functions by doing so. Instructions for converting for example to the US dev edition of the M9 are linked in the readme thread.
Alternatively you could try xposed and the sense tool box on a rooted stock rom. This way you could enable many customisations without having to change your firmware. If you choose this option you should get back to the correct stock rom for your firmware by flashing the RUU I linked in your other thread.

I tested the headphones on another rom and my computer, they had no issues with that. I'm working on converting it to the dev edition. I've changed my CID, but I'm a little afraid that this write-up is a bit out of date, so I'm currently searching for the right RUU.

It's linked in my thread, as well. Directly behind the link to the newer version of the conversion guide. However, it doesn't matter whether you use that old 3.x RUU or a newer one. You just need to install some OTAs while being on stock rom, afterwards, if you choose to use the old one. Be aware that most of the custom roms aren't compatible, yet, with the new 4.x firmware. So only update until your device suggests you to install the 4.x OTA.

You don't need an SD card with less than 32gb if you're on firmware 3.x (and that is what you currently are). With firmware 3.x and above HTC enabled the usage of exfat formatted SD cards for RUU flashing.
Used the SD method, my phone is now running developer edition. Speaking technically once again, I should be able to use ROMs and have them work now, I imagine. Wifi and cellular both work after flashing dev edition.j

Correct.
IT WORKS. IT WOOOOOORKS. Thank you so much.
Hi all,
I have an HTC 10 for which I have unlocked the bootloader and rooted, installing Magisk and I have TWRP recovery.
Is there any QUICK way to get rid of all this and return entirely to stock? I'd like to completely stock-ify to get the nougat update, and then root again if I so desire. The reason being that I've made what feels like a lot of changes and I never FULLY understood what I had on my phone. I find the scene is getting harder to follow (ok, I haven't been trying as much these days), and I swear information is getting harder to find on XDA. Unfortunately, any other site is too basic, or I don't feel like I can trust it.
Anyone help me?
Cheers
I would say just run a RUU? Correct me if I'm wrong.

Ok I've just looked that up and it sounds like it could do the job. Where can I find what I need?
Wrong section?
Sorry, posted in wrong place. Saw discussion and thought, that'll be it. My bad. I hate the XDA layout. Never seen another forum quite like it.
I used this ruu before updating (not my upload): https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=457095661767130225
I also wanted a clean start for the N update
As others have stated RUU is most foolproof way to get back to stock. I prefer to use RUU.exe versions via PC connection.
Ruu cannot downgrade unless you're S off.
