You should be able to root without wiping your data by using Sunshine to S-off your device (s-off locked option). Your bootloader will remain locked.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/htc-10/how-to/guide-root-optionally-s-off-radio-t3373025
But sunshine costs 25$, and if you just want root, you're able to unlock your bootloader and don't care about s-off, then just backup your data and use the free method which does wipe everything.

You need a writable system at boot or S-off

So if I flash the GPE ROM I will have a writable system? Certain ROM's only? I ask because my main M8 cannot achieve S-Off currently.
Thanks,
Thomas

I'd relock the bootloader personally, but I'm not sure. I just run customs and get the new stuff plus more before the OTAs hit. Canada is never first.

Bootloader does not need to be locked/relocked to OTA.
Re-rooted and unlocked bootloader after installing the latest update. Had to reinstall some apps including harmon kardon. Lowered the max/min cpu setting. Froze some bloatware and the phone is running like a champ. Currently at 62% battery life since 7am est. Been on Pandora normal IG & Facebook activity. I have no regrets from purchasing this phone. Cheers...

That is definitely not the case! You absolutely do not need s-off to root your device. All you need to successfully root is the proper files, custom recovery, as well as an unlocked bootloader.

S-off has absolutely nothing to do with root or unlocking, two completely different things. I never said anything about s off (other then saying you don't need it for root). I said unlock your bootloader, flash custom recovery and flash the su zip. You have a fundamental misunderstanding of what s off, unlocking and even root is it seems. BTW you can absolutely still s off if you want. It cost 25 bucks.

All you need to do is unlock your bootloader and throw in a custom recovery. You don't need s-off at all. Just go here to unlock your bootloader:
http://www.htcdev.com/
And then flash TWRP and SuperSU and you're good to go.
What they said. ???

Hello
So I tried running firewater on my One M8 but it failed. I got this 'remember the golden rule? Never take an OTA update? Apparently you don't. Device patched by HTC, you are out of luck.' Is there anything I can do? Btw I'm running CM11 if that matters.

As the many .... many threads on s-off already say :
Use a STOCK rom and a STOCK kernel and a STOCK recovery, then try firewater.....Does it fail ? Use SUNSHINE (Google it) when that fails you have to wait for SUNSHINE 3.0 (or whatever the next update will be called)
NO other way and NO other options are available !

Then i suggest to read up a bit more and learn the terms and all the things you need to know to get back to stock/how it all works/and what exactly certain things do. And most important why you need s-off and root.
Ask yourself these things first and then start modding a device.

Why would you want to unlock the bootloader? This phone is anyways open and can be easily rooted by pc or even within the phone.
