"Variant System Version" Error when Updating M8 - One (M8) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello Guys I bought an M8 from a friend and it seems pretty weird.
Firstly, it claims to be a test device. When I open the " Tell HTC and Error Reporting" in the About section, this text appears in the end:
Notwithstanding the above statement, this is a Test Device. Tell HTC is automatically enabled and cannot be disabled. By participating in the trial, you understand and agree that HTC will collect information from and about you and your device, including personally identifiable information, such as your name, phone number, precise location, email address, device ID and IMEI.
But when I try to update the device to a system update that is being offered, it fails to install and this problem appears:

"lightbox_new_window": "New window",

}
And Hence I can not update. Jbtw this phone does not have any root access, and also it is " S-OFF ".
Any one have any way to upgrade it from 5.0.1 to Marshmallow ? ( Without Bricking it Pretty please ...)
Thanks for helping.

This, along with "variant system" and s-off means the phone at some point has been modified (root, s-off, etc.).
Your best bet is to return to stock ROM (TWRP backup) for your version, stock recovery, then you should be able to OTA update.

I didn't figure out how to delete the old thread. People are answering up on that so this one is useless now. Do you know how to delete this one ?

How to re-install

Hey Guy/Gals,
I'm very new to this so bare with me.
I have an LG Optimus E971 from Rogers here in Canada. On the home screen the dock icons are unresponsive. However inside an app at the bottom of the screen the icons work. So I assume this is a software issue and wish to reinstall or re-inject the firmware into the phone. I'm looking a step by step how to on doing this, current version of is 4.1.2.
EXAMPLE:
-Dock icons (icons at very bottom of screen itself) are unresponsive.
-Landscape view works, as the icons move to the side of the screen
-Open app, Instagram, all buttons at bottom work (feed, explore, camera, news, profile).
Nothing? Just ads, huh
If you are not rooted and your bootlader is locked the best way to fix things in my opinion is to hard reset your device(to delete everything from inside that may couse the problem)install lg pc suite from lg and reinstall the phones firmware, this tool has an option to do this l've done it before. If you are rooted and your bootloader is unlocled just flash kdz and do a hard reset after.

Are you certain you're able to reinstall the firmware? All I see is that I can Backup/Restore and Update Firmware.
There's no where that says I can re-install the firmware. When I google it only picks up on firmware updates
Yes I am sure I did it my pc is down and I can't tell you exactly where is the option but I can tell you what I remember it's in the upper right corner next to help option or the other one probably and I think it says something about troubleshooting

If you still can't find it maybe you should update the program to the latest version

Sprint S3 stock without root will not take OTA

So, I was approached by someone asking me to take a stab at repairing their phone. They have a Sprint SGS3, and the owner is, well, less than versed in reading through XDA and determining exactly what steps they've taken to modify their phone.
Suffice it to say, I have a bit of a diagnostic challenge on my hands.
Their story is that they rooted and installed a custom ROM on their phone, and has apparently spent the last week or so fighting with their device to return to stock. I've been told that the ROM is stock, and the recovery is also stock. They apparently want to return to stock and take the KitKat OTA, and have nothing to do with rooting. Though, House says, "everybody lies". I'm assuming there's something else I should be looking at to check whether or not they're deliberately omitting a step they took, or perhaps something they didn't realize/forgot they did.
I have yet to get the device in my hands, but when I do, what should I be looking for, exactly? I haven't modified many Samsung phones in the past, mostly just HTC devices, so I'm not sure what I'm looking for. Poking around the forum, I see some mentions of a Flash Counter and ODIN and some other utilities, but I'm not sure what I should really be using to try to fix the phone. I'd also like to maintain the ability to root their ROM in the future if possible, just in case the owner goes back on their root-bashing.
Thanks for reading! If you guys ever need a hand with an HTC device, I'd be more than glad to give you a hand there.
If they're on a stock ROM, you could hook it up to Samsung Kies and do a "firmware upgrade and initialization" under the Tools menu. That should restore a completely wiped stock ROM w/ stock recovery, as well.

The bootloader will still read at modified status, and if your acquaintance's phone has Knox on it, I wouldn't try the flash counter reset.

Just run the ND8 tar in Odin-http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2738533. No OTAs, easy as pie.

Samsung Service update?

Got this notification on my wife's phone a couple days ago and was wondering if anyone else has too. I have been waiting for a root exploit and have not accepted build updates or security updates just in case. If anyone has any info they would like to share I would greatly appreciate it! I didn't see the question asked already and have never received this on any previous phones, thanks again!

I believe this is only the Samsung billing app update or the sign in app. I was getting this on the S5 I had and it didn't affect root. It can be reverted by flashing the stock tar so I wouldn't be worried about it.
Thanks for the responses, I'm gonna take it, if I get any ill effects I'll report back ☺
I took it, too. Pretty sure it's only for a Samsung app.

Yepp. It's just for the app. If you turn Samsung Account off, it makes you uninstall the update, and as soon as I turned it back on and tried to download a new camera mode, the notification to update came right back.

Getting 5.x Lollipop Update on Rooted HTC ON M8 International

Hi all
Apologies if this is answered elsewhere but I cannot find any information on this for the life of me and it's driving me mad.
I have a notification stating that my 5.0 OTA update is ready but I can't install it due to the Custom Recovery on my device.
I followed this guide (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2701376) and flashed the 'stock' (not actually Stock - every link it CWM or TWRP) recovery but it didn't work and the update still fails. I think I read somewhere that something is different about this particular update.. that you need to have an 'untouched'/never rooted device?
Plllleeeeeeeeeeeeeease can someone steer me in the right direction so I can get this update sorted?
Thanks in advance.
have you made any system modifications to your current rom?
Also need CID and firmware version number
ALSO needs to be in Q&A (asked the mods to move)
Thanks for that.

ok so you have clean 3.29.401.9 stock rom installed, if not restore the nand available in my thread via TWRP. (may be best to do this as a fresh start)
Next install the 3.28.401.9 stock recovery.img from the first post in my thread.
hoprfully then u should be able to tale OTA automatically

every link is CWM or TWRP are stock Nandroid backup, not recovery.img
Look under Stock Recovery Images for the stock recovery
Thanks for your help, that seems to have done it.
The first time I didn't pay enough attention to my correct Software number (in my case 3.28.401.9). When I matched up my CID (HTC_001) I just picked a random link on that list which is why it didn't work.
Got it going now and back on custom recovery so thanks again for your assistance

Rooting question N910v just purchased. Can I rooting?

I have read countless post and have been to a dozen websites and I guess I am just confused if I can root this device with the current status, software/updates and security patches.

Yes, you can.
It requires unlocking the boot loader and installing a custom recovery. There are a few threads about it which makes it somewhat confusing. What it boils down to is do you want to use LL or MM to unlock it and once that is done do you wish to use the stock TW LL/MM or a custom ROM (TW/AOSP based).
Easiest to follow instructions here, uses LL to root:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/no...asy-guide-how-to-root-verizon-galaxy-t3454593
The hybrid way (LL/MM software mix, will require working SIM/Data connection to complete rooting), once done will be full MM based:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/no...t/howto-bootloader-unlock-upgrade-to-t3398144
https://forum.xda-developers.com/note-4-verizon/general/shortcut-to-rooted-n910vvru2cqi2-t3763451
IF you want to run a custom rom, unlock the bootloader as outlined in the links above, install TWRP and then the ROM of your choice (TW/AOSP).
I just did both ways above not too long ago on a new to me 910v, then I ended up using the files from this post on the modified/hybrid way to root:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=76813374&postcount=16
Then I upgraded the partial firmware from here to CQL1:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/devdb/project/?id=15720#downloads
Yes, that means I wiped and rooted all 3 ways linked/described (BPA1, CPD1 & CQI2/CQL1) trying out the files/software. All 3 tries worked fine. I will say for me, Kingoroot worked and kingroot did not. YMMV
Andrew
Thx for all the info and the great news! I guess I thought that the phone might have been updated to far. I will give it a shot. Thanks again.

Hello, I just bought a N910V with same build number as yours. Did you have a chance to see if it can be rooted? (it seems all the instructions say cannot, just want to confirm. Thanks)

Yes I was able to follow the links and downgrade and unlock the bootloader and root and install a custom rom.
